We adopted a cute little terrier mix from a local rescue and, after having to toss out many shoes and experiencing several days of frustration, hired Mark to train us and our new pup. We were convinced that our new pup was the devil incarnate and we were being karmically punished for something horrible we'd done in a past life. I seriously wish I could give this review 10 stars. Working with Mark has been such an amazing experience both for our 2-year old pitbull, Broly, and my fiancé & I. We found Doggie Steps via Yelp in January, so of course I have to review here in case any of you reading this right now are not sure which trainer or training school to choose for your fuzzy family members. I also research everything to the extreme to make sure we have chosen the best person/company possible, and for the best price. We decided to do the in-house 5 week training because our home, at the time we reached out, was just unmanageable long term. Mark has changed our household for the better since I reached out to ask if he had room to take us on as home-visit clients! He's great and i'm sure his group sessions are just as effective. Background on our situation: About a month and a half ago we got a second Husky. Both dogs got along at first, but pack-order tests were soon an issue for us. On day #2 there was a scary fight in our living room over a bone. We saw a change after the very first session with Mark. Of course we did all the home-work during the week, but that was easy and only took a little bit of time out of our days - so well worth it. We decided to look into hiring a dog trainer when our 6 month old Goldendoodle puppy, Dude, surpassed the 60 pound mark- he is such a giant puppy it was getting hard to control him when people came to visit. The final straw was that we have 3 children under age 5 and Dude was knocking them over and unintentionally hurting them just because of his sheer size. We were keeping Dude separated from our kids with a baby gate way more than we liked and were frankly starting to have regrets that we brought him into our family. That's where Mark comes in. We chose to do the 5 week private in-home program. It was important to us that Mark was able to come to our home and see the environment that Dude was in. In my opinion, this ended up being an integral part of the training process because we had so many everyday behavior situations that we wanted to work on and having Mark in our house and seeing what challenges we wanted to address was so helpful. He really taught us how to use the tone of our voices and body language to communicate with Dude more effectively. I was skeptical that we would see a difference after just one session but I was so wrong! Using the tools and tips that Mark gave us, we saw a big difference in the way Dude acted with our kids and when company came over. Each week we would review the previous weeks lesson, go over any concerns and work on new skills with lots of opportunities to practice. That being said, a huge part of this process is follow through and being consistent. It is truly human training just as much as it is dog training! At the end of our 5 week session, we were incredibly happy with the progress Dude had made and knew that we had the tools to continue on our own. We found Mark through an internet search and decided to try his 5 week home training sessions for our 12 year old yappy and nervous miniature schnauzer Finnegan. Friends teased us about training for a 12 year old dog--what would be the point? Well the point is we have a different dog and we are different pet owners than we were when we began this course a short while ago.
