It's been a month since our 4-year-old rescue, Angus, completed his 3-week board and train--and we can confidently say we have a completely transformed dog. We recently sent our miniature schnauzer, Snowball, to Charlie Bar Dog Training while our family was on vacation, and it was truly the best decision we could have made! Snowball is a sweet, sensitive dog who's always been very attached to me ("mommy"), but she struggled with barking at people, barking at other dogs, and reactivity at home whenever someone came to the door. After three weeks of what I like to call "finishing school" at Charlie Bar, she's come home a completely transformed pup -- calm, confident, and so much more connected to us. The trainers not only worked wonders with Snowball, but they also spent time training our entire family on how to use the same methods consistently. That made such a difference. My sister rescued a Dutch Shepherd mix from a shelter the day before it was to be euthanized. The dog was pretty shelter-institutionalized, not aggressive, but way to much energy and non-compliant. We made the decision to put the dog through CharlieBar's 2 week boot camp. "Dutch" came out of it a new dog: Happy and responsive to commands. The folks at CharlieBar gave great feedback to my sister and sent photos and videos on the dog's progress during the training. We cannot recommend Charlie Bar enough. My dog JD was rescued by Mesa animal control for neglect and given a second chance by Arizona Animal Humane Society. I adopted him last August he dragged me out of the Humane society. He is 7 years old without any training never taught to walk on a lease, with food aggression, no boundaries or self control. Slowly he learned, but other dog owners avoided me and my ole sore back suffered from doggy damage. Last month, on recommendations I took JD to CharlieBar, normally they recommend 2 weeks of boarding and training but because of his history a extra week was recommended. When I picked him up he was a different dog, lease walking, feeding and boundaries were improved. The following week Ricardo came to visit and train me to use commands properly. Writing as the foster parents to Steele. These views only reflect our experience and are not to be considered those of the rescue. TL;DR: Ricardo bailed on us twice for in person training at the last minute and was unprofessional in his communication. During board and train (B&T), Steele was unnecessarily made to wear a muzzle 24/7 despite never needing that ever before. Because of the discomfort and anxiety, he continuously tried to get the muzzle off causing abrasions on his snout. While CharlieBar did mention these to us on the 4th day of B&T, the pictures they sent us initially seemed to try to hide the issue. Even with the injuries, they did not want us to pull him for medical attention and had no plan to prevent the injuries from getting worse. Do not recommend them due to unprofessional and shady behavior. May have once been a good company, but feel they are greedy and overcommitted now. As background, we sought training for Steele due to a bite while being taken in as a stray by county, and due to resource guarding of food, toys, and dog beds. He is very loving once he starts to trust, but you can tell there are some habits from being a stray that need to be worked on. At home and on walks in our neighborhood, he does not have to wear a muzzle and is completely fine with other dogs, our cat, and people as long as you are patient and do not touch the items that are normal concerns for dogs with resource guarding. After his time on the streets, you can tell he just wants companionship and often comes up to you tail wagging and nuzzling your hand or arm to be pet. While we have fostered him relatively easily without any additional training beyond our basic abilities ("no", sit, taking treats gently, going into his crate on his own) we wanted to work on the resource guarding to help his future adopters transition more easily. We had heard about CharlieBar due to many recommendations and watching the videos posted on Facebook showed some amazing transformations. We initially were signed up for in person training however Ricardo bailed on us at the last second two separate times after making appointments. The first time he simply slept in too late and would not move anything around in his schedule to make the session work. We had gone through a lot of efforts moving our other dogs to family and friends' houses for the day so that Steele could have a focused training environment which made the flakey reason for canceling especially frustrating. However, we rescheduled three days later and were okay with it being less than a week. The day before he sent an odd text asking if we were still on for the following day even though we had sent nothing to him first and not given any indication that the rescheduled appointment wouldn't work. While we won't know if he ever intended to keep the appointment, that text seems to suggest not and the next day we were first asked to delay 30 minutes because "sh*t going on at facility" and then were canceled on again. While the situation did prove to be something that needed to be addressed, this should have been the sign not to eventually do B&T, for both working with someone who would communicate the cancelations the way they did and for the unprofessional attitude towards their own staff. The situation being addressed was a bite at the B&T and while that is a good reason to cancel, the tone towards his staff was disparaging, simply saying "girl got bit", "she is crying and stuff. Newbs..." and proceeded to send us a picture of his associate's injury. At this point we were done moving our schedules around to accommodate someone who didn't have their situation together and did not reschedule. [continued in pictures. I've used Ricardo for training and boarding my very headstrong, stranger anxious Heeler - Cattle dog, Cooper. Cooper had an extreme phobia to wearing a collar and walking on a leash. Ricardo had him walking on a leash after one session. We have also done (2) two week board and train sessions. Cooper now knows sit, stay, lay, and to wait at the door until we release him. He's also has become much less anxious around strangers . Rick and his staff has been patient and wonderful with him. We are amazed at his transformation. These amazing humans trained our Bailey boy (rescue, pit mix) back in 2019. We just applause how far he's come with walking. He used to pull soooo badly! It was nearly impossible to walk him, at all! But now, with their awesome training, and our continuous practicing, my 8 yr old daughter is able to walk him safely down the sidewalk, by herself. He still gets a little anxious with other dogs, but his reaction is much less intense than it used to be, and much more controllable. We took our dog Sam to Rick shortly after adopting him. He needed help walking on a leash without pulling me and help containing his excitement when greeting other dogs. Our big fear was that he would get in a fight because his energy level was too high for the other dogs. Within 5 minutes of the first session, Sam was walking amazing on a leash and continues to do better with every practice session we do with him! I actually enjoy walking with him now. Our second session was even better. Sam was learning to not lunge at the passing dogs and that greetings are done calmly and are short lived. We are very much looking forward to our next session where we talked about finally getting him inside the dog park successfully with contained energy levels. We hired CharlieBar to board and train our 3 dogs. We have 2 female Rottweilers and a female Bullmastiff. Ricardo agreed to take our dogs for 8 days of board and train knowing full well that there was no way he could accomplish anything we were hoping for. He even went on record after that 8 days is not enough time to accomplish anything. (Why did you take our money?) When we asked the trainer at pickup what was accomplished over the 8 days, his response was also nothing. We asked Ricardo to refund us for the training portion due to the fact that no progress of any kind was made and he has refused. He did go on the record that he has changed his policy now to not do this to anyone else. He did offer to bring them back for a week to train them again, but we are not comfortable leaving our animals in his care for the following reasons. We dropped off 3 clean, freshly bathed and healthy dogs only to receive them back, filthy and carrying ticks. Ricardo will surely claim that there are no ticks there and no dog has ever had tics there. Well, that's simply untrue for the simple fact that our dogs had ticks at his facility on the day that they were picked up. For the record, our dogs never had a single tick on them until they spent time at CharleBar. The other issue we had was our Bullmastiff had jagged plastic shards passing in her stool. We came to find out that the staff had left a 14 month old puppy in a kennel with a cheap plastic bowl. They even sent us pictures of it. The final issue was our Bullmastiff came home with some type of injury to her lower jaw. When we got them home they were literally too filthy to let in the house, so we decided to bathe them. When we were bathing our Bullmastiff we noticed that her lower jaw was a bloody mess. It had been all scabbed over and was infected. We ended up having to take her to the Vet to be treated for a staph infection. We inquired with Ricardo and he no answers for us. Due to the experience we had and the expenses we had after the fact, we thought we were being extremely fair in only asking for a refund for the training portion. We'll see if the courts feel differently. read more

My original review that I wrote 8/7/17 on Charliebar' Facebook page: We just picked up our 8 month old German Shepherd puppy, Tula, from Ricardo 2 days ago. She was there for a board and train for approximately 4 weeks - and after spending just 2 days with her, I would recommend CharlieBar Board and Train to ANYONE! Before her time with Ricardo, we had nick-named her 'Tula the Terror.' While my boyfriend and I worked with her every single day, we just weren't able to communicate effectively with her; she's super smart, but was super stubborn. She was starting to run our lives and I was starting to feel pretty helpless - she was getting to be reactive on leash, would pull like crazy, would jump on and mouth anyone and anything, and was starting to show signs of resource guarding. We could never get her to just relax and turn off. She had to always follow us around the house and needed pretty much non-stop supervision and attention to make sure she wasn't getting in trouble. In the past 2 days, we have seen how much her mindset has changed. Per our request, Ricardo taught us how to properly use an e-collar with her, and taught us how to continue her balanced training. For the first time, we opened all of the bedroom doors in our house, and Tula did not take advantage of this privilege. She listens to nearly EVERYTHING we have asked her to do with no corrections - we have even taken her to the park and had her off leash to play and train. When she can't find anything better to do in the house, she goes and lays on her bed or in her crate in the living room and RELAXES!! Her leash reactivity is pretty much non-existent and meeting new people and dogs has been a breeze. We are so much more confident in our Tula, and I can feel she is more confident in us and our leadership too. Our bond is already growing stronger. We've also started working some new commands with her, and she is picking them up SO quickly thanks to the fundamentals we have to work with. I know we still have a lot of work to do to make sure she continues to be a good dog, but I know Ricardo will be there for us whenever we hit a roadblock. I am truly amazed by how much Tula has grown and learned from her time with Ricardo, Tyler, and Bryan (and of course Christine, Mikey, and all of the Paredes pups!). THANK YOU, CharlieBar team for making 'Tula the Terror' into our wonderful, obedient, relaxed, and balanced Tula!!! Update 7/22/18: We still absolutely love Charlie Bar, Ricardo, Bryan, and the rest of the team. We have worked with Ricardo and Bryan on agility, luring, and continued training for our dog Tula. Tula always boards with them whenever we are out of town and I know she is being sooo well take care of. Tula loves Ricardo and Bryan (and Ricardo's family!) and I know they love her too. I do not trust anyone else with my dog at all. Every time I pick her up, she is happy and healthy. The facility continues to be very clean and well kept - I have been there nearly a dozen times now. Ricardo and Bryan continue to support us to this day with Tula's training and are always there when I need them whether it's over Facebook messaging or in person. I know they will always be there for us and I don't know what we would do without them. Tula is an amazing dog that we now know how to properly train, bond with, and trust - and I know this is due to Charlie Bar. I also have to give the team a huge shout out because they helped teach Tula how to swim and enjoy the pool very recently and that was such a huge obstacle for us! Thank you, guys!
