Every stay my dog has had with this business has been pleasant and he comes back happy and the staff sends text updates daily

We have trained 3 dogs with Top Dog and all trainers were outstanding. The training model they use works well and we felt the pricing was reasonable too. We have also boarded 2 of our dogs with Top Dog at their Tempe location and had great experiences. The staff send photos and give updates and the dogs are always happy during their stay. I took off one star because I am super disappointed that Top Dog no longer has a Gilbert location for training (this has been a very recent change) and it is unlikely we will continue using them for training because it is a 20-30 minute one way drive to Tempe whereas the Gilbert location was 5 minutes from our home. read more

Shawn is who trains our dog. He's very guid at it . I'm very impressed with the progress so far . Calming a very active Pitty. Didn't expect the response from "Finn" on his first lesson , that we got.. I left gobsmacked.. Finns lessons will absolutely continue there.. Finn is no piece of cake. An abandoned Pitty who did what he wanted , because no one was telling him what to do. He's like a train , I was bruised up , just from his greetings. I can't fight that kind of power. We moved from California to Arizona about 6 weeks ago. We have a 19 month old German Shepherd from a working line. We had done training with Lexi in California with a couple different trainers and training methods. We know she is adorable, exuberant, loving, has a bit of stranger danger but can be a beautiful handful!! We knew we needed to find the right person to train with but how to find someone... Enter Shawn....we were at the Arabian Horse Show and met Shawn and the Belgian Malinois, Jarvis, he's been training. How impressive were they????? Wowie! In between all the people stopping and chatting with them, I was able to learn a bit about Shawn's perspective on training. I liked him and everything he told me. I went back another day just because I wanted more!!! I knew after talking with him the second day, he was the one I wanted to train with. We scheduled an assessment and have just finished 3 one-on-one training sessions with Shawn. The day of our assessment and the first day of training Lexi barked at him, was very unsure and probably didn't want to be there. By yesterday, our third day, she was so excited when we got there, made herself absolutely 100% at home, was happy and excited to see Shawn and work. Shawn...I am learning "coping" vs "training" and was "coping" as she was exploring everything, relocating things, etc. I love watching how quickly she is progressing and enjoying her job training. I just hope I can keep up with her--lol!! Shawn is very respectful of Lexi and of us as well. One of the many things I like is that he explains the "why" not just the "how to" of ways we train. I can see that everything he teaches us has a purpose and makes perfect sense. I love the pyramids. We look forward to continuing all our training and making Lexi be the best that she can be! My 2 "aha" moments from yesterday... NO now has a real meaning Training isn't just a couple 15 minute sessions a day. Every interaction throughout the day with Lexi is an opportunity for training. We adopted a 10 week old puppy last fall. We quickly found out that he was quite fearful of loud noises. We enrolled in training and did a package of 5 sessions. The sessions were helpful and we made great progress in improving communication between us and the pup, but his fear outmatched our dog training skills. So, we enrolled him in three weeks of board & train. During these three weeks, his confidence was built up and he is now able to deal with the loud noises that sent him into a tail spin previously. At 9 months old, we still have work to do, but feel that we have the tools to help our dog thanks to Top Dog. Joe has been an amazing trainer. read more

Great training facility. We drove about an hour for training for a foster to adopt dog training. The facility was clean and our trainer was excellent. The dog was just too traumatized from the past. Unfortunately he did not work out for us. I can say I definitely would use them again. read more

A little background on my situation before I begin the review. I rescued a mini Labrador mix from Taiwan in July 2018. She was a beautiful baby girl, born in January of that same year. She had a very rough go at it the first few months of her life. When I finally adopted her, I probably made every single mistake you could make when getting a new puppy; I was overly affectionate, coddled her, let her do mostly whatever she wanted, and didn't instill proper training early on. Fast forward to October of this year. I moved out to Arizona from California and was determined to invest in some quality training for my pup. I did some research and checked into several places, and Top Dog seemed to be an effective choice. I've had a few private sessions so far with one of their trainers, Edgar, and things are going very well. They have a very structured approach to establishing fundamental behaviors before advancing to more complicated methods. My pup is noticeably improving every week. The results so far are truly more than I had originally hoped for. I will admit, I was just as much in need of training as my pup. This is also something they will help you identify and manage throughout the training process. I highly recommend Top Dog to anyone who is looking to establish or advance good behavior with their pup as well as help make their lives happier, safer, and more fulfilled. read more

After acquiring a "trained service dog" from Top Dog, I would warn others to be extremely cautious when purchasing a trained dog from this facility. The first red flag should have been when they were unable to provide any medical records, despite having a contract stating the dog would come with updated vaccines and a veterinary health certificate. He was also in pretty poor condition when I received him from Top Dog, he was very thin and had a deep laceration in his back foot and he also had happy tail which took several weeks to heal. I have had my dog since December of 2022 and since then, he has dealt with multiple health conditions, including dermatitis, chronic gastrointestinal conditions, and arthritis. He is now on a prescription diet and multiple medications for chronic gastrointestinal conditions and immunosuppressant medication for dermatitis. He has also dealt with several behavioral issues in the time I've had him. Shortly after bringing him home, he began having housebreaking issues which took about 6 months and the help of a different trainer to resolve. He also now requires medication for vet visits due to anxiety and it has been recommended by his veterinarian that he be put on Prozac for general anxiety/separation anxiety if we are unable to resolve these issues through the additional training he is now receiving through a different facility. Needless to say, he is NOT my service dog. I am his service human. Unless you are prepared to deal with receiving a very expensive pet with ongoing medical and behavioral issues, I would encourage looking elsewhere for assistance with acquiring a service dog. read more

We can't recommend this company. My good friend and I had to board her dog because she was having major surgery. At the same time she thought her dog could use some training. We met with Edgar and went over what we wanted for her to learn. Mainly leash training and a little bit of obedience training. We had thought that Edgar, who we met with, was going to be her trainer, because he knew what we needed her to learn. When we came to take her home we noticed she was skin and bones and she seemed very edgy. The bag of dog food, that we brought, she would easily eat in 3 weeks, was only half gone. We were told she was eating well. When she came home she had no spirit and seemed traumatized. This isn't what we wanted. Her bowel movement had blood in it. I'm so angry with her training and feel like she was abused by the way she acts. We now have to figure out how to get her back to her non traumatized self and try to get her eating normally. Think twice before bringing your dog here. read more

I would like to give a shout out to Top Dog.  They have given me confidence in Scout and I could not be more thankful than I am.  All the trainers are wonderful and have shown me that a GSD is not out of my limits to train.  This is my first dog I have raised from a puppy and I realized that I needed more help as the internet videos were not working. Our dogs spent 3 weeks boarded and trained. The facility is very organized, the staff is very helpful and friendly. Eliza our trainer was amazing. She is defiantly a dog whisperer. She transformed our hyper, dogs into well obedient, focused dogs that obey cues and commands. We were sent home with the tools to help us transfer the dogs training back home! read more

I decided to go with the boarding and training. My dog was there for 5 weeks and while that was a long time without my little girl, I knew she was well taken care of and learned a lot. Joe was our trainer and he was the best! I was kept informed of her progress and got some really cute pics of her while she was there. When we would go for our transfer lessons, Kiya would get SO EXCITED to see Joe! I know it was money well spent and I know if I need anything, I can call and they'll get us scheduled. I don't even know where to start with this review. I should also add that I have never done a yelp review before however, my experience with Top Dog has compelled me to do so. If I could give them 100 stars, I would! I rescued my dog, Daria from a very bad neglectful/abusive situation through a dog rescue in Mesa. We instantly bonded. Daria was very skiddish of any other person and other animals. She progressively got worse to the point I couldn't have anyone over and our walks became awful (we had to walk for bathroom purposes as I live in a 2nd floor condo). She was now aggressive (never towards me). She bit my visiting dad and would literally lunge for other animals during walks. It was scary and embarrassing. If someone came into my house she would growl and show teeth. I didn't know what to do. It got to a point where my parents or anyone else didn't even want to come over. I felt like my life was at a standstill. I started looking for dog trainers through a google search and on thumbtack. Every dog trainer that I spoke with rubbed me the wrong way. Most pretty much told me that because of her past history, she is a lost cause. That all changed when I called Top Dog and spoke to Cheri. Cheri never once made me feel like my dog was a lost cause. We were on the phone for a while, she answered every one of my MANY questions, she was so warm and friendly, and she invited me in for a consultation. She gave me hope and such a positive attitude. She never made any promises but told me stories of past dogs they have trained. My consultation was with Kyle. Kyle evaluated Daria and spoke with me at length. His knowledge of dog training and "dog psychology" is immeasurable. He gave me so much information and I was able to start working with Daria that night. I signed up for 5 private sessions with Kyle. The facility is very clean and organized in a nice area in Gilbert. They ensure that everything is scheduled so that dogs aren't all over the place which was a concern of mine. Daria started making HUGE progress after our very first session. Kyle worked with Daria AND myself. He gave me the tools needed to practice at home. He never once made me feel bad if he had to show me things several times. Daria grew to absolutely love him. She looked forward to training each week. Throughout the 5 weeks, Daria became a different dog. She was still her loving self to me and at the same time she really opened up and began to trust people. Kyle gave me the tools and knowledge that would slowly get Daria to come around and build that trust and realize that not everyone was going to hurt her. My parents started coming over again, friends started to come over...Daria would come out of her shell and showed NO aggression. After the 5 weeks, we didn't get her to a point where she was good with other dogs so I called Cheri again to talk about boarding with training as I was going out of town. We booked and Daria stayed at top dog for 4 days. Kyle, Nicole and Alexis all worked with her and they are all just amazing. I was sent a video showing her playing with other dogs. I literally almost cried. They also were able to give her a bath and nail trim. These people are amazing!!! Every dog should go to Top Dog. Even though Daria is at a point where I am totally content with her progress...I decided to continue and book some group classes. I have learned that dog training is actually a costly investment and I am certainly not rich. Top dog was one of the best priced facilities and it is money very well spent! read more

I took my dog here a few months ago while on a long vacation,the facility is big and I was told he would be getting a lot of outside time,however they were in the process of building kennels and so therefore my 60 pound dog had to spend his vacation in a carrier they use on airlines.To be honest that did not bother me because I know dogs like small spaces to sleep. Unfortunately his second stay was a disaster. This time I sent him to Top Dog for a weekend getaway while I was out of town, like always I packed his meals in individual bags (1 for every night i was gone;so 3) and a blanket and toy.Upon picking him up the staff of 3 all came out of the "boarding room" in an uncomfortable fashion so that i could not see the small room in which all the dogs are in, but I was told he ate well and had fun.The process went smoothly , I picked him up but on the ride home my gut told me that something was not right with my family's best friend . As i was looking through the bag I found that my dog had only eaten ONCE in three days,his toy was missing, and his blanket was not covered with dirt or smelled like it had been laid on by a dog who was supposedly playing all day. A service they provide is a grooming before your pup goes home which i had declined, my dog came home smelling rather clean so either I had been given a free bath or more realistically the kennel forgot about him and he peed in his crate and they bathed him to hide it. Im very disappointed in what i thought was a paradise for my perfect pet. read more
