Had to update my review, after coming here a few more times, and I have to say the steaks are delicious! The first time must have been an off day, because now I see what all the hype is about! We always split the 2 1/2 ribeye and order it medium so that it comes out medium rare. And it's glorious! The potato's are meh, and we will stick with fries. Our waitress was on the ball, polite, and got our food to us quickly all while juggling an 8 top + several other tables. Also the AC is better, I don't freeze anymore, so like I said, it must have been an off night the first time. I look forward to Doe nights now! :) read more

Mmmmm, where do I begin? The house salad dressing was good but it was only regular lettuce no spinach or romaine and the shrimp bisque was tasty. The only other minus I saw, was that the crackers for the soup were stale, soft. I guess no one goes to eat crackers so they have room for the steak. Then came the merlot, yummy. Then came the meal, superb. The bread rounds were delish, as was the 2 pound medium well done boneless rib eye with red potatoes and butter. The boiled shrimp were to die for. Last night was the first time I experienced this place, and it was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere was great, and our waitress was one of the best that I've had in this city. The food is great! We started off with the tamales first. My friend who is from California even placed her stamp of approval on them. They were so good that we ended up having to take an order to go. I got an 1 1/2 pound Porterhouse steak with grilled asparagus for my meal. The asparagus were seasoned and grilled to perfection. The steak was absolutely amazing. Okay, I liked the chili with the tamales and the fries were fresh cut potatoes. I should've stopped there...but I wanted to try what they're known for! the steak was too big! I felt like I was in an episode of the Flintstones. Asked for it cooked medium and the center wasn't even touched with heat. Sent it back 2 times and finally said, "I must want it medium well...". The medium look I expected finally came, but then it was too tough to chew because the steak was well done on the outside with a pink center. Not only that, but the flavor was not what I would call savory. You know, when you enjoy drinking the flavor with each bite? I couldn't believe the place was packed?? Maybe I should've ordered an item they don't take pride in? Next time, for the price of one steak and a small sampling of tamales at Doe's...I'd rather Texas de Brazil or just about any other steak house where the flavor of the steak tantalizes your taste buds! Maybe I just caught them on an "off plate" on an "off night"? I felt I got robbed...had to eat a snack when I got home. Holy Cow(pun intended) This restaurant is located on Government, somewhat close to Twine and Radio Bar. I haven't been to a Doe's since I lived in Lafayette and boy have I been missing out. Interior: It's an older house that was renovated and made into a restaurant. It really has a cozy and welcoming feel to it. The kitchen was a good size and pretty clean for being so busy. Service was IMPECCABLE - (You have to request Lacey). When a complete stranger makes you feel like you guys have been foodie BFFs, then you know they have an amazing personality. She answered all my questions about dinner and suggested some items I would have missed. FOOD - EVERYTHING was SOOO good. I had: tamales, tomato basil soup, beer cheese soup, NY Strip, Tiramisu, and an Bulleit Old Fashioned. Tamales: You HAVE to try them. An adjacent table mentioned them to me and I can totally see why. Soups: Ridiculously rich and flavorful Steak: Perfectly cooked, tender, and spiced Tiramisu: The leftovers did not make it home. ;) Old Fashioned: Bartender knows his stuff. I tried Doe's for dinner this past Friday and I was blown away! I just recently started eating steak and after Friday night, I'm wondering what have I been missing! The food and service is excellent! The menu is not extensive, but I like a restaurant that knows what they're good at and serving just that. On to the food... The steak dinner comes with a marinated salad, fries or boiled red potatoes, and drop biscuits. I ordered the Mac and cheese as an al a carte side as well. I started with the marinated salad that has a simple dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic. It was good, but I mixed in a little ranch and it was even better. The Mac and cheese was really good too. It was a simple cheese sauce and had melted cheese on top. It had a bite to it as well. I'm not sure if it was black pepper or maybe cayenne, but it was definitely amazing. The drop biscuits reminded me of donut holes but not sweet or anything. They were so light and fluffy. Perfect for sopping up the juice from the steak! Lol Now the steak...I ordered the 1.5 lb porterhouse cooked medium well. Like I said, I'm new to steak, so I'm not into steaks cooked to the bloody temperatures like most, but mine was perfect! The seasoning on it was so simple so I could taste the flavor of the meat which was divine! I'm going to stop right there because I could talk for days about how good that steak tasted! I got the fries on the side. They weren't "life-changing" like the waiter proclaimed, but I'm not a big fan of natural cut fries either. I have to say that they were still good and I did enjoy them. If you're looking for a great steak, this is THE place! It is a little pricey because the steaks are served by the pound, but it's worth every penny! Doe's has an old-fashioned country home feel to it. No need to get all dressed up and make a reservation. And I really liked the fact that it's very casual. I decided to check out the Baton Rouge location during restaurant week. The place was packed, we had not made reservations and a table was made ready for us within 10 minutes. The server was very kind, not hovering but never too far away either. Every few minutes I saw servers moving bout with huge slabs of sizzling meat that looked amazing. I was impressed with everything I saw and genuinely looked forward to my meal, thinking I had made a great suggestion for dinner... The food proved me wrong. I ordered the Strip, Medium Well. I think the server may have misheard me because it came out medium rare. Actually, I'm not sure what medium rare looks like, but I am confident that a steak prepared medium well has a cool pink center. This meat sizzled and mooed on my plate. Bloody. They corrected the error pretty quickly and also comped me a shrimp appetizer for my troubles. A kind gesture. I really can't say enough about the attention to detail in the service. When the steak came back out, it was a bit more charred on the outside but otherwise prepared to my liking. It was flavorless. I was curious if there was any salt involved in its preparation. The same can be said of the 'garlic' mashed potatoes. There was no flavor anywhere to be found, except the shrimp and the flavor there was a bit overpowering. My wife agreed with me, we packed it in and decided to try it as leftovers. I felt like a bad guest, getting all this good service and finding the food terrible. I'm a fan of good service and theirs was exceptional. I'm hoping that the food and flavors I experienced were the results of a busy night. I'm going to try them at least once more. I was so excited to finally go eat at Doe's Eat Place. My thought when I left was, it was okay. Nothing spectacular, don't get the hype. Now, I will say that the tamales were very good. The salad not good at all, the potatoes were okay. I don't get the point of selling those huge steaks. I would rather go somewhere I can get my own small steak and get it cooked just how i want. I chose this place because when I googled "best steak in Baton Rouge" and read Yelp reviews I decided, what the hell. It was about 10 minutes away from my hotel by cab. It was easy to get an open table reservation. This is not a typical steak place. Red and white gingham table cloths and wooden floors, mounted animals all over the walls. It's super casual. A bit more casual than would be my preference, but I'm here for the steak and can drop the prima Donna act for a good food adventure. At first the service was slow, but there were several large parties. I ordered a dirty martini- no complaints on that. They switched my server (no request on my part, and were pretty apologetic about the initially slow service). At this point it's cool, I'm playing Candy Crush and feel better bc I was starting to wonder what was taking so long. I ordered the 20 oz bone-in ribeye rare, sautéed mushrooms and a salad. My server was sweet and very accommodating of my dietary no carb substitution requests. My steak is massive and beautifully grilled. Very tender and juicy, but not bloody- a talent for a rare steak. I did need a bit salt and pepper, but that is not a big deal. The mushrooms are fantastically flavored. Very simple, not fancy, and a damn fine steak. Is it the best steak in the state? Good question, I thought I had the best in NOLA about a week ago (see my review). However, the more pieces I eat the more this steak is impressing me. It is certainly the best in Baton Rouge. The rating is tough...if judging only the steak I'd give it a solid 4. If you don't want anything fancy, but you want a bass ass steak, then this is your place. If you are a foodie and want a good steak, this is your place. If you are more of a suit and tie, white table clothe, hovering service affair, you may be disappointed by the trappings, but the steak is worth throwing on a pair of jeans and letting go of the frippery and finery for just one meal. read more

Such a shame because the first time we went, we had a lovely meal. Tonight my boyfriend ordered us the 2 1/2 ribeye medium rare. It came out bloody and seared, definitely rare. The creamed spinach was too salty, and the new potatoes were obviously cooked in crab boil. My boyfriend enjoyed the potatoes, although this was unappealing and distasteful in my opinion. This is our favorite steakhouse anywhere. Louisiana, Alabama etc. We have never had bad food of any sort there and and it is always fresh and very special. I would not think of going somewhere else and ordering a steak. Their tamales are fantastic and I always get some to bring home. The service is by far superior to many other restaurants in Baton Rouge. When they created this place they did it right. We eat out a good bit and if I compare this to other places steak wise it is Number 1. You get your money's worth. The staff is friendly and always finds time to help you make just the right choice. For 2 years I have been hearing about the food here. Maybe it was a mistake to try this place during Restraunt week, but I thought it was as good a time as any. A time when places put their best foot forward. However, I was very underwhelmed. First off, Iade a reservation, but we we're still seated in the very loud bar. We did the Restraunt week sampler. The beer and cheesele soup was tasty but really salty. Tomato basil soup tasted like marinara sauce (I kinda though we needed a side of pasta to go with it. Nothing wrong (or special)about the house salad. The ribeye steaks were huge, and that was honestly the saving grace of the whole dinner. However my medium rare steak was a lot more well done. The dessert was such a disappointment. When I hear "deconstructed eclair" I think light, flavorful, and delicate. Have you ever had cheap Mississippi Mud Pie? That's what this dessert was. Layer soggy gravm. Crackers with a heavy whipped cream topping covered in a thick fudge. My friend got a cocktail which tasted like church wine mixed with grape juice, so I opted for a glass of wine, which wasn't bad. They have an above average wine list. I wanted a Gin fizz, but they were too busy to make it. I was really let down by this place. I honestly don't want to come back, but I heard the tamales are good so we may give it a second shot. The ribeye here is probably among the best I have ever tasted in my life, and I have eaten A LOT of steaks A LOT of different ways. They use a pretty tried and true method of broiling, which makes for a juicy steak; And, according to George the chef, they catch the drippings from the steak and pour them over the incredibly large marbleized cut of meat. This really allows for the meat to become very tender and leaves the steak with this perfectly salty finish. I was truly impressed with the quality of the steak here. Very good. George competed at the DIG Bartender competition last year so I had to ask for some cocktails to accompany the phenomenal steak I had just been defeated by. First he introduced me to an "electric current" designed to coat the stomach and provide a buffer for the alcohol I intended to consume. This "electric current" is an egg yolk on top of half a lemon with balsamic vinaigrette and salt and pepper. It sounds a bit strange but it was actually very tasty. Next up was a technical spin on a Ramos Gin Fizz. Using a whip cream charger, he deposited lemon and lime juice with a top shelf Gin and the egg whites from the egg into my glass in the form of a beautiful white foam. The concoction not only looked awesome but tasted fantastic. Definitely have him create you one if you have the chance. And finally, he created a very tasty Sazerac using cognac (not rye whiskey) that finished wonderfully on the heels of the previous creamy cocktail. All in all it was a very good experience. The 2# porterhouse was very well cooked and was super juicy. I also had the cup of mushrooms that complimented it very well! Things to know before you go: 1. This place is pretty much only steaks! They have a few side items and a few salads! They also have 2 or three fish options 2. All the steaks come in 2 pound or 2.5 pound Porterhouse Sirloin Ribeye T-bone (You CANT get there cuts any smaller) However, they have a 6, 8, 11oz fillet mignon 3. The Mac and cheese is a down south grandma type Mac n cheese. (Very good) Everything was great. Definitely makes most of the other steakhouses in Baton Rouge seem over-priced and not worth the hype The side salad, however, could've used major upgrades. We tried this place for the first time. Had heard great things about the steaks here. I was even more excited when we arrived and the menu said they hand cut their steaks every day! I love a good ribeye and was anxious to try one. Then the waitress informs us that they only offer 2 and 2.5 pound ribeyes, 1.75" thick! My wife doesn't eat ribeyes, she likes filets (4-6oz). They only choices of filets were something like 8oz and 11 oz. So, we decided to split a $76 ribeye. While the ribeye was OK, I was not impressed and nothing to write home about, certainly not for $76. IMO, it's WAY too thick for a ribeye steak and too big of a steak for one person to eat, which makes it not a good choice for a couple to eat, since they have to agree upon and share whatever they order. Also, for a top of the market priced steakhouse, the décor is more like all American frat house, complete with paper towel rolls on the table. I got a ribeye that was bigger than a small child cooked to perfection and a cup of some of the best tomato basil soup I have ever experienced. The delightful aroma of tamales met us as we walked through the door. Wonderful childhood memories of going to Muffaletta's Hot Tamales on North Blvd. raced through my mind. We were seated and ordered cocktails which were perfectly executed. After enjoying a plate of tamales between the table we were served our salads, then medium rare filets with fries and a side of mac and cheese. The gentleman with us ordered a 2.5 T-Bone with fries. I don't know what they do to their fries, but they are not your typical french fried potato, they are better. The steaks were seasoned and cooked to perfection. Two of us split an 8 oz. filet, fries and the mac & cheese, and were more than satisfied with the amount of food, so if you prefer to eat a little lighter, they have no problem with you sharing. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful with suggestions, and the owner stopped by our table for a little conversation.
