I'd be in paradise if I could marry J. Alexander's building to a Barnes and Nobles with a studio apartment and four car garage. The food is delicious. My usual are the Carolina Crab Cakes. Although I'm a creature of habit and rarely deviate from the norm, I've also tried the Filet Mignon with Bearnaise. I was pleasantly surprised. My waitress suggested I try the carrot cake and it's become a nice addition to my meal ever since. read more

9-2-2024 We all had another late night heading back home and always to our surprise, MOST places are closed by 9! This place stays open til 10! Thank God! It was 5 of us, got there around 9:20pm. Our waitress was Maddie. What a beautiful and pleasant young lady!! Very attentive too! I will request her next time we stop by! We ALL love the atmosphere at this restaurant! The food??? wow! Exceptional!! Everything is just superb! Even though we got there late, close to closing, we are never pressured to eat and leave so they can close! That means a lot! J Alexander's was exactly what I needed today! My server, Jamie was heaven sent and the absolute best. I always enjoy the welcoming atmosphere. But tonight it was truly the service and food that made our day. My hubby ordered the prime rib. I didn't even have to chew it and it was so flavorful. This is coming from someone who likes their steak "cooked." I ordered the Steak Maui and the taste was impeccable. It was perfectly prepared. I can't forget the horseradish cream sauce. My family and I came on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated immediately. Our waiter was super friendly but kept forgetting our drinks. We ordered the Mac and Cheese but the waiter brought fries. When we addressed this, he brought us the Mac and cheese but still charged us for the fries. The prime rib is always good- I've been here a few times. It's very soft and tender and is good on its own. No sauce or salt is needed. The crab dip was very rich, cheesy and had huge chucks on crab meat! There's plenty of parking. As soon as Ii walked in, I loved it. The smell of the firewood they use fills the entire restaurant. Speaking of which, it's upscale contemporary.... Like what you would expect to find at a nice steak focused restaurant. It's a bit dark and I suggest you wear something nice but they will accept your money no matter what you have on. The prices are on par with food of this quality but I don't think it's over-priced. I enjoyed one of the specials: Montreal ribeye. Dry aged with Montreal seasoning (whatever that is) and a side of loaded mashed potatoes. Excellent. I also managed to sample the same cut off the regular menu which is marinated. It was very good as well. I'm not sure which I liked better. Either way... You can't lose. Oh. And the wait staff was excellent as well. I'll definitely be back. read more

Another great meal here! I ordered the Mr. Jack's Chicken Fingers from the starter menu and it was the perfect portion for a meal. The chicken was fried to perfection and seasoned just right. The fries were fantastic as they always are here. I love that they're shoe-string style. Both the mustard and BBQ dipping sauces for the chicken tenders were excellent. Great atmosphere, low lit & busy without being overly loud. We started with the spinach queso and chips which was delicious. We also tried the soup of the day- creamy chicken noodle. It was very flavorful, full of veggies and LOADED with mushrooms. My husband ordered the Maui Ribeye with mashed red potatoes. He really liked the steak, which has a sweet pineapple flavor, but the steak itself had no seasoning. He added some and said it was much better. We both agreed that the mashed potatoes weren't great. Pretty tasteless. I ordered the Palermo Chicken. It's pan fried with goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes in a lemon butter cream sauce. Overall, it was very lemony and overpowering with the goat cheese. My broccoli was undercooked and cold as was my couscous. We had to ask for bread and butter. It is not offered. They brought 4 or 5 small pieces of very hard bread with some butter. Our server was ok, but not great. Not bad, just not great. Overall, glad we tried it, but we don't foresee returning. read more

This is a great Resturant for a very special occasion dinner. It's decorated beautifully and very serene atmosphere. We had flounder served with lemon butter sauce and whole green beans with butter and slivered almonds. It was cooked perfectly and it was very enjoyable meal. If you are planning on eating steak be sure you are prepared to pay well for it though. Least expensive steak was $40. So we opted for the fish which was around $24. Not sure why it's taken me this long to review J Alex. This is easily one of my fav restaurants in BR. Very nice atmosphere and always with great, FAST service. Hardly ever have a wait except maybe on Sundays after church. The Mac and cheese is top notch and different from anywhere else. If the smoked salmon dip is on the menu you can't not order it. Pro tip is to get it with tortilla chips instead of toast points (they are too hard). Hawaiian ribeye is amazing. Also the grilled trout is great!! And when hungry enough... finish your meal with the carrot cake. It's sheet cake style topped with a large helping of cream cheese icing they melt all over it and serve hot. Sooo good. When the family is in town, we eat here 9 times out of 10 and are never disappointed. Last time I went I took a friend who had never been. The waitress overheard me telling him all about the carrot cake but we didn't order it. She decided to give us one on the house. It was so sweet... made him like the place even more! read more

My friend and I always love the food at JA but Wednesday we were seated way in the back and then 5 men perhaps 20 to 30 years old were seated next to our both. They were so noisy we could not talk and hear our answers. Since I am handicap we chose not to ask to be moved, we ate our meal and left. Food is always good! In fact, their chicken salad is my favorite salad of anywhere I've ever tasted. As much as I love their ribs and Mac and cheese, the salad is my go-to, I literally have cravings for it! The servers are generally pretty good and quick, but it is really busy most of the time so any minor issues are totally understandable! It's a very busy and popular restaurant! There's always a wait! A couple times we have seen the hostesses be rude to customers (never to me, but I didn't think the customer was in the wrong or deserved to be spoken to how they were) which makes me not want to come back, but I can't go too long without that salad! read more

The first time the steak was pretty good but this past time it was overcooked and the char on the outside was bordering on burnt. During our most recent visit I started with the wedge and my Wife the sensation salad. My wedge was good but not in the top 3 best I have ever had. My Wife was not pleased with the sensation salad at all. The sensation was very small and not enough dressing. We also ordered the Mac & Cheese and Potatoes Au Gratin. The Mac & Cheese was very good. It taste and looked a lot better than most of the pictures posted on Yelp. The potatoes were okay, not great but not horrible. The complimentary bread was good however, not close to even being top 10. We finished our meal with the New York Cheesecake. I have lived in BR for 6 years now. Many departments at LSU take guests there and in that time, Building 5 has done nothing to improve its parking lot. The restaurant sits underneath an overpass and the parking is pothole marked unpaved gravel. This means that there is no room for wheelchairs or accommodations for anyone who is differently-abled to get into the restaurant. The whole restaurant makes no room for handicapped persons. On the occasion I did get food, the food is slightly overpriced. All meats were cooked adequately but the food was lukewarm probably owing to sitting in the kitchen under the heat lamp than being delivered promptly. When I have gone, I regularly have to ask for refills on soda as I am the designated driver often for department functions. Servers pay you no heed if you do not buy alcohol. Because I go here because of academic reasons, I would barely go here myself. I've been here many times and found it wanting. It's an ableist place in its infrastructure. It's fine I'm atmosphere as a cocktail bar but would little recommend it to people I call friend.

She came across as short, unfriendly, and overall not very pleasant. I first ordered a Banana Foster's Martini, but she came back and said they didn't have the ingredients. No problem--I asked for an Espresso Martini instead. A few minutes later, after bringing everyone else's drinks, she returned and simply said they couldn't make that either and asked if I wanted something else. At that point, I just declined. When it was time to order, our table had nine people. She took my husband's order, then went around the table taking everyone else's order. By the time she got back to me, she said, "Okay, is that it?" I had to remind her that she hadn't taken my order yet. I ordered the crab and corn bisque, a salad, and the stuffed catfish with creamed spinach. The salad came out quickly and was very good. Then everyone else at the table received their meals while I only received my bisque. After waiting, I was told my stuffed catfish "didn't come out right" and had to be remade. At that point, I honestly wondered if it was a joke. It wasn't. By the time my entrée arrived, everyone else was nearly finished eating. To the restaurant's credit, they did remove the stuffed catfish from my bill, and I appreciated that. However, the entire experience left me feeling overlooked from start to finish. My biggest suggestion would be for our waitress to work on her customer service. A smile goes a long way. Saying things like "Give me that plate," slamming cups onto the table, and appearing annoyed throughout the meal doesn't create a welcoming dining experience. Hospitality is just as important as the food, and I hope this feedback is taken constructively.
