I had an amazing experience at SoLou! My family and I celebrated our grandfather's 84th birthday this past Saturday, and I must say this restaurant was an excellent choice. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with stellar customer service that set the tone for our entire experience. Our waiter, Justice, was truly delightful. It was an absolute pleasure being served by him. He was incredibly friendly, patient and attentive, especially with our party of 14, which included children. His attention to detail and welcoming demeanor stood out, and his positive energy elevated our experience. Justice went above and beyond, and his efforts did not go unnoticed! The entire staff working on Saturday, April 4 was top notch. Everyone we encountered was warm, helpful and professional. There was a steady stream of people coming in and the restaurant is packed. The garage doors at the other side of the restaurant were open so it was hell a hot!! In mid-august!!! We ordered drinks and only three of the four were delivered. The fourth was eventually delivered. We order food and it was at best a 3. The best plate was the boudin quesadilla. I thought it was going to be small but was filling. The po boy didn't have any condiments on it and when I asked for cocktail sauce I was told they didn't have any!!!! How can you serve a shrimp po boy sandwich and not have cocktail sauce?!?! The fries were ok. But one of our party ordered her friend extra crispy and they were the second best thing served. The ketchup is bbq sauce mixed with ketchup. Interesting but not what was wanted for fries. Sean was our waiter and he was as good as he could be. The waitress service and the food were both really good, and we appreciated how kind and attentive the staff was. We specifically found this restaurant because we searched online for gluten free restaurants, so we were excited to see that you offered a separate gluten free menu. However, there are some serious issues with the accuracy of that menu that need to be addressed. When we asked about the pork rinds brought to the table, we were told they are fried in the same oil as everything else. That in itself is your choice as a restaurant, and we understand cross contamination can happen. We were also told the french fries are cooked in beef tallow in a separate fryer, but they are not considered gluten free, which is why they are not listed on the gluten free menu. Again, that is completely understandable. What is not acceptable is having items listed on the gluten free menu that are not actually gluten free due to cross contamination. The pork rinds and cheddar filled tater tots were both listed on the gluten free menu despite being fried in shared oil with gluten containing foods. For someone with celiac disease, this is not a small mistake or a dietary preference issue. My husband has celiac disease, and if he had eaten the pork rinds based on trusting the gluten free menu, he could have become extremely ill and potentially needed hospital care. Our daughter has gluten sensitivity, and she would have been sick for the rest of the night as well. Many people still treat gluten free as if it is just a fad diet, but for people with celiac disease, it is a serious autoimmune condition that causes real physical harm. To the OWNER: please educate your staff and kitchen on what gluten free truly means, and update the menu so customers can trust it. People with celiac disease should not have to risk getting sick because menu items are mislabeled. read more

Food: it was all very good. I had lobster deviled eggs and an alligator hotdog. I didn't love the fries, there was nothing special about them, very run-of-the-mill. The deviled eggs were bomb, I have talked about them multiple times since going. Sevice: I went on a Friday evening (2 people) and the service was pretty bad. They were really busy, so I get it, just know if you go when they're packed you'll probably have a 2 to 3 hour dinner between waiting for a table, server, drinks, and meal. This place was very fun and an unexpected find in our quick visit to Baton Rouge. We arrived around 1 pm for brunch and though there were empathy seats it took about 15 minutes for us to be seated. The floor was a hazard. I almost slipped and hat to catch myself otherwise it would have been very bad. Not sure why but the floor was extremely wet and maybe even greasy that didn't make it safe to walk on. Once we arrived at our seats, our waitress was very attentive and pleasant. Our table ordered a variety of dishes. Each were very good and enjoyed by all of us. We set in doors but the outside seating looked enjoyable. My only complaint was it was a little tough finding vegetarian options since it's the south so everything had meat in it in some way. Stopped by SoLou and left very impressed. Sat on the patio with our two pups, so dog friendly was a plus! It was kind of chilly but no worries, they have heaters! Ordered the SoLou burger with two patties, cheddar, and bacon jam. The patties were moist and juicy, and the cheddar plus bacon jam combo hit perfectly. Smoky, savory, and balanced. The bun was nicely toasted and held everything together. It comes with crispy battered fries that were solid on their own and didn't feel like an afterthought. Also tried the crab and brie grilled cheese and this was a standout. The bread was perfectly buttery, not greasy. Plenty of real lump crab meat, not the artificial stuff, and the brie was melted just right without being overly cheesy or heavy. It's paired with a tomato soup that's meant for dipping, and it works. The soup wasn't thin or watery, more of a creamy, well seasoned consistency. We also ordered the cheddar cheese stuffed tater tots, and these are not your standard tots. They're oversized with a pillowy, potato forward inside and crispy on the outside, with cheesy goodness in the center. Pro tip: dip the tots in the tomato soup. Trust me. To top it off, at the end of the meal they brought out cotton candy. Since it's Christmas season, it was Grinch flavored cotton candy, which is basically sour apple. Amazing experience!! We called ahead to see it if they would have a table for 7 available on a Saturday afternoon. Well, they couldn't promise it. They told us if we came in right now they would have it available. We walked in and the hostesses Tiara and Sarah greeted us so warmly. I mentioned our call ahead and they had the table ready and waiting for us. Because it was a high top, the bartenders Benton and Willow, where our servers. Despite a busy Saturday full of groups and birthday parties, they were so attentive the whole time. We were impressed by how they were so friendly, encouraging, accommodating for the kids, and tons of fun. We brought guests from out of town and they were amazed at both the atmosphere and kindness of the people in Baton Rouge. What I didn't like: acoustics--very loud and hard to hear others at my table, crawfish beignets. Service was okay--not overly friendly. It was way overpriced for what you get in my honest opinion. Sadly, there were also a lot of empty seats on a Friday night, which may either be a sign of the restaurant going downhill, or maybe the economy. Thank you so much to Solou for being so accommodating to my friends and I. We made a reservation for at least 15 people and were all comfortably seated in a booth area. Our waiter went above and beyond to help us celebrate our newly engaged friends which we were super grateful for. I was about to go on a road trip with dinner plans later that day, so chose to keep my brunch a little light. I started with the blueberry margarita, which was nice and sweet. I do wish it were a little sourer, but if you're a sweet drink girl, this is the way to go! My meal was the fried cauliflower in sweet and sour sauce. A bunch of my friends side-eyed me for that one, but quickly took It back once they tasted it. Delicious. My only nitpick would be that maybe there was too much sauce, especially as I got to the bottom. Maybe putting a little less on the cauliflower, and having more on the side so that the customer can control that themselves? I called them saying we were running a few mins late and was told that was fine and we would get seated once we got there. We arrived and waited almost 45 minutes before being seated! Anyways we were seated right away for a table of 6 around 8 pm on a Wednesday evening. Our server, Olivia was simply amazing. She was very courteous and came at all of the right times and answered all of my questions. We ordered grilled cheese for the kids, but they don't use cheddar which is typically what my son likes. It's more like fancy grilled cheese. They have fried pork skin for complimentary appetizers. We split the shrimp corn dogs. While the presentation was cute. The consistency on size wasn't the same for all pieces. It's exactly as it sounds, it's shrimp in a corn dog batter, which wasn't as impressive as I'd hope. My husband had the shrimp poboy which was pretty good. My mom's gumbo was kind of salty, but still flavorful. My cousin finished all of her Brie grilled cheese and tomato soup quickly. I'm pretty picky with my shrimp and grits, but boy was I impressed. All of the flavor was there!! The shrimp could have been bigger, but cooked just perfectly. I could eat the sauce all day because the sauce makes the dish. This was my favorite meal here. At the end we had cotton candy, which was such a delight and cute finish to the meal. Soooo we came here for graduation lunch and it was cool. I had ribs with a side salad. The ribs were warm not hot and very saucy. The salad was good. My husband had the shrimp corn dog and French fries. He enjoyed his meal more than I did. The Sunday afternoon I went was at the end of their busy time but service was slow, even at the bar. The doors to the outdoor seating were open, and inside was warm and very humid everywhere in the restaurant. There are Slippery Floor signs everywhere including what looks like old signs on the bathrooms. The concrete is greasy feeling. We had to wait outside in 100+ degree heat for 20 minutes before we could find a spot inside in their small waiting area for another 10 minutes. So after waiting now a total of 30 minutes we were then told it would be another hour wait. At this point likely would have missed the cut off for Brunch so we left feeling rather mis-treated with the poor management of their schedule. I've visited SoLou numerous times since it first opened, and while my experiences have been mixed, it is usually at least an enjoyable time. The atmosphere is very airy and crisp with cool colors, a nice outdoor seating area, comfortable bar stools, and a good enough layout. Staff has almost always been very welcoming (one major exception, but I will let that slide as I have never seen him there again). The appetizers (each and everyone one of them) are great for a meal or for sharing. I'm not crazy about the rest of their menu, and it has been hit or miss, but everyone has a different flavor pallet, so I encourage everyone to get what they think they will like. They have a great happy hour if you just want to visit at the bar. (It is a short window, though, only M-F 4-6.) So far, my favorite items have been the shrimp corn dogs and zydeco cauliflower. I could make a couple of means with just those two items. I've also had a couple of brunch items that were delish, I just can't remember what I had! Every bartender I have encountered has made delicious drinks or recommended tasty wines. SoLou remains a choice on our list when trying to think of a solid place to head out to, and all my guests, young and old, have appreciated the experience. read more

You want brunch? This might be the spot you need. My family and I decided on SoLou for a celebration of Love brunch. My mom and step dad had their 21 year wedding anniversary...beautiful...just like our service. Portia made our time here very pleasant. From helping concoct drinks for us on top of our Mimosa bar, to being patient with my little person and our Autistic Uncle. She was even nice enough to bring a cup of fruit to my baby who wanted to steal ours for the mimosas lol. Between the whole family, we got the sweet potato pancakes, chicken and waffles, burgers, shrimp and grits...okay I'm realizing I don't need to name everything, you get the pik. We ordered a lot of food! LOL Everything tasted great, except, my mom didn't particularly care for the shrimp and grits, I think the tasso kind of over powered the sauce (I think her standards are pretty high for this dish).
