Top Secret spot for me and my family. Great food, great service and prices are very reasonable! I love it when the owner / cook comes out to check on how the meal was. There's also live music with Dan Marro. He's incredible! I would recommend the colossal crab or surf and turf sliders to start, awesome! I've been there on Cinco de Mayo and it looked like all the locals were there dressed up. It was fun. It's not a wild or innocent bar......just a great place to enjoy your meal with your friends. Went Thursday night for dinner. 5 adults and 2 children. We all loved our dinners. The service couldn't have been any better. Excellent experience. Went early 5:30 since all shore restaurants are busy. Will definitely be back. Stopped in for dinner on our way home from vacation. Don't understand negative reviews. I'm part of a large group that vacations in OC every summer. There are not many restaurants that accept reservations and it is challenging to find a nice sit-down location that can accommodate our party. The Doc's Place delivered. Excellent service and delicious food. The colossal crab meat appetizer was not only delicious, but a tremendous value given the quality and portion. The grilled prime rib of pork was exquisite! All in our party thoroughly enjoyed their meal. A single criticism: The kitchen timing was poor in one respect, our entrées came just as we were finishing our appetizers. This is an easy fix and I will be sure to request a bit more time between courses upon our next visit. read more

Update: recent visit, summer 2019 - - Still lousy. Was a reluctant guest. Original review: Over the years, I've been here a number of times. After tonight, I will NEVER come again. The food was tasteless (and I ordered an entrée that was recommended by the waitress for its tastiness). There were plenty of empty tables but the staff rushed us through our meals anyway. Some of our order was wrong but that was probably because the waitress could not hear us over the singing guitar player (we kept repeating ourselves). We could not hear each other over the music and spent the whole evening shouting at one another. The evening was such a disappointment. Nice spot on the water at marina. Came for super early dinner and qualified for early bird specials! Ha! First time ever. Price was very good for quality. The outdoor space was very hot (covered but very stuffy) and despite have 4 open tables they wouldn't move us to a spot with more air flow. Staff was very nice tho and we enjoyed crab cakes and stuffed flounder. Crab cakes had bell peppers tho-word to the wise. Didn't bother me but they substituted crab meat fir crab cake in flounder. I'm not sure I would give The Doc's Place such a high rating if it was located somewhere other than Somers Point where finding a good place to eat and drink is so difficult, especially during the "off season." I put off season in quotes because we were in Somers Point the weekend before Memorial Day and a couple of places we tried to go were either closed or not offering 100% of their experience. I was a bit surprised by such a strict adherence to the tourist season, since one would think people might be inclined to head toward the beach on a sunny and pleasant weekend in May even prior to the official start. Regardless, my friends and I were lucky that we headed to The Doc's Place after checking their website to make sure they were open. Frankly, we weren't sure if they were open even after checking their site because their hours page, as of this writing, consists of a five paragraph explanation of the conditions under which they are open. Closed during football games? Isn't that usually when people flock to bars? Anyway, I felt like I needed a flow chart. But we made our best guess and were successful. We sat at the bar for drinks and eats. They have a very small but someone unique draft selection. I had a Summer Blonde from River Horse Brewing Co. out of Lambertville, NJ, which I had never had before. My friend and I shared an order of the friend calamari, which was crisp and tasty but nothing exceptional. Their flank steak sandwich was rather good, featuring healthy slices of meat. I'm drawing a blank on what kind of cheese it had but I remember I liked it :-) I finished off with a Manhattan made with Booker's which was well-made, if, again, not exceptional. I had a FANTASTIC dinner at Doc's Place last night. Everything seemed to go perfectly. My party was promptly seated outside on the deck right by the railing with a great view of the marina. The temperature was perfect also; 85 degrees with a light breeze. I started with the New England clam chowder. This is a presentation in itself, as they purposefully overfill the bowl to give the dish a more rustic look. Very shortly after we were done the appetizer my penne with Kobe meat sauce came out, and it was delicious. Our waiter was very friendly and had great suggestions. Is it called Docs due to the Docks, or the Docs from the hospital who eat there on the way to golf? Either way, we had an interesting evening there. We ate there for our anniversary dinner while spending the week at OC. With no kids along, we were looking for a nice evening out to celebrate year #13. To Doc's credit, without reservations, we were able to be seated immediately on the deck, at the end, next to the pool. We were beyond the canopy's cover, but on this night, the sun was setting and wasn't an issue. We were treated to a basket of rolls and olive oil, which were decent. Orders were placed- fillet and crabcake, salmon special, and a salad to split as an appetizer. Nothing too difficult. While we waited for the salad, we were able to take in the surroundings, which consist of several rows of boats in a marina. Unfortunately, there is no view of the bay...which, with a name like Doc's, I would have assumed. Besides wondering who could afford some of the docked behemoths, the scenery grew stale. At the shore, I'd prefer to see ocean...or, at least, the bay. It was still more interesting that being inside, however... That wasn't the problem. The problem was the wait. Eventually our waitress showed up to see how we were, and my wife asked if the salad would come before the main courses. Our waitress seemed confused, and then said yes, and left...lost salad order, probably. We sat...for another while...until the salad came. We'd been seated probably 30 minutes before the salad arrived. It was, in fairness, good...just overdue. But then came the wait for the main courses. Another 20-25 minutes. A bus boy came to the rescue, hearing me mention "yelping", and quickly spun around to refill our water and get more bread... Kudos. Our waitress had said she would take care of that back with the salad revelation, but had forgotten. Eventually the food arrived, and it was a decent meal. Steak was flavorful, and the crabcake was good. No problem, in my opinion, with the food quality. Our waitress did make things right, apologizing for the service speed, explaining that the main course order had been lost. She picked up the tab for our dessert and coffee. Perhaps a necessary move, but appreciated, nonetheless. On most occasions, I would have been really annoyed. After nearly 2 hours, the kids would have been at war, I'd be annoyed, and someone would be crying. However, it was a great night out with my wife. We had a chance to sit and enjoy each other's company, and take in the surroundings. I suppose there are much worse places to be held up, with much worse food. On this evening, we hit a glitch, but it was a relaxing evening that ended well with good food, good atmosphere, and a good dessert...and, no kids! read more

I don't know how this place has any bad reviews. I have been coming to Doc's since I can remember (in fact I just found out this was the first place my dad came after I was born for a celebratory beer). The family run establishment is warm and inviting. I have never had a bad dish here in the 30 years I've been going. I have celebrated every milestone from Sweet 16s to Graduations to the celebration of my grandmother's life. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. The atmosphere is welcoming and the perfect summer bay front experience. There is live acoustic guitar music. Not to mention the Bar Staff is TOP NOTCH! If there isn't a cocktail already on the menu, they will cater to what you want. Happy Hour Menu is amazing! If you are attending on a Friday or Saturday night in the prime summer season expect to need a reservation or to wait. Be patient and you'll have a great meal! We Love Doc's in our family! read more

My fiancée and I went here with her parents to celebrate her mom's birthday. The service overall was very good. The food, while pretty good, was grossly overpriced. But I guess with this being the shore and all, they can charge what they want. The wine list was pretty impressive if you're a wine connoisseur. The beer list left much to be desired. Being a craft beer fan, I was disappointed to find out that the only "craft beer" they had was Lagunitas IPA. We primarily came here for the food, but it would have been nice to have more craft beers on draft, or even in a bottle. If you're celebrating a special occasion or just want to have a nice dinner, I would certainly recommend Doc's. Their menu is pretty diverse to fit whatever you're in the mood to eat. read more

This used to be one of my favorite places to dine. It was classy and the food was very good. Last night the food was just ok , and the wait staff hovered and rushed us, ( a server was dripping sweat from his face and it just missed my plate as he handed it to me. Gross.)The veggies for the night were mushy sautéed grape tomatoes or applesauce. Diner choices at best. The place was packed and there was a decent musician singing and playing. The women got the duck and crabcakes.. both decent.. the men got the cobia and mako, both were horrible. Working in Somers Point next to the Docs Place has its advantages! We have sampled many items for lunch and have yet to find a loser in the bunch. From the start when you walk in check out the cork art all around the restaurant. One of the nicer outdoor seating areas as it looks out over Harbour Cove marina. Where to start with the food. The Tuna Melt by far is one of the best sandwiches you'll find. Plenty of fresh tuna salad on toasted rye, with cheese and a tomato. We have ordered the Kobe Taco Salad a ridiculous amount of times in the last two weeks. Made with spicy Kobe beef. Thousand Island dressing, beans, cheese and sour cream and salsa. Incredibly good. Dinner finds a great selection of pasta and seafood and other signature dishes. Great atmosphere and food, plenty of parking and dedicated owners. You won't be disappointed. read more

We have had many many lunches here and one early-bird dinner over the last year, and Doc's is still high on our list. My only complaint at this point is that they have no daily specials for the lunch menu. It's like a blessing and a curse -- Greg and Dave know us and always have a drink waiting as soon as we sit down, and their service is impeccable. It's nice to get that "Cheers" feeling that we're recognized and called by name. But the flip side is we're starting to get tired of the menu. How about some seasonal changes, or daily specials, so there is something new to try? The soups-of-the-day change by day of the week, but if it's Friday, you know it's going to be tomato-something. Even the music is the same, over and over and over and over and over again. Makes you want to hate Paul Desmond. It looks like they have lots of regulars like us, lots of grey-hairs that make it a point to meet here, so there are lots of repeat customers. It must get boring even for the chefs/cooks. So how about it guys, freshen up your menu? P.S. -- the chocolate peanut-butter pie is worth every calorie! read more

My wife, two friends and I spent the weekend in Somers Point and drove past the Doc's Place on our first day there and thought it looked nice, and it does. We were immediately seated outside with phenomenal view of the private docks for the large pleasure boats. It was beautiful. I get the impression that this is where a lot of locals and semi-locals come to eat and look at their boats. That is where the good part ends. The well intentioned waitress, a very nice girl who was apparently hired 5 minutes before we got there, had no idea about the beer or wine list, even though both were pretty small. We ordered some basic stuff; I had cappelini with shrimp and chorizo, my wife had cappellini and clams, and our friends had fish and kobe sliders. My pasta had apparently been cooked before my table mates' because when it arrived, the pasta had dried into a glommy mass. My wife's clams came with 2 - 3 actual fresh clams and the rest was canned, chopped clams. Our friends' dinners were no better. Here is where it gets fun. When it was time for our check, we asked the waitress to split the check down the middle to accomodate both parties. She said that this was an unusual request and said that she would have to check with the manager. We all looked at each other and then back at her and one of us, not sure who, said, "really? Never had a problem with that anywhere else?", which is true. She checked with the manager, (?), and came back to us telling us that if she had to do that, we should have told her that we were going to prior to ordering, to which we responded, "how would we have known that?". I feel bad for her, she obviously didn't know the policy, but why should we have been penalized for that? We ended up putting it all on one bill and settling for cash after the fact. Have frequented this restaurant for several years but admit have not been here for approximately a year. An old friend was back in town and wanted to return their for dinner. Most upsetting experience. We arrived shortly before 6 pm and was seated in their outside porch area. We ordered a favorite drink that we call a "Peach Bubbly" made with peach vodka, cranberry juice, and topped with champagne. My friend and I shared 3 each of these drinks between the time we arrived until the time we had finished appetizers, the entire bread basket (good bye diet), and a dinner.....approximately now 9 pm. The owner approached us and asked us if we were alright to drive? we were both a taken by this but said "yes". Then he returned after we had deserts and had ordered after dinner drinks he insisted we get an Uber. We cancelled our after dinner drinks; and asked for the check. The waiter tried to reconcile the situation but it was not his fault and/or responsibility. We were happy to leave and never return. However, on the way out my friend walked out briskly but as I was leaving the owner again asked about the Uber in which I responded "there is no Uber, we are fine" and then he said the most unbelievable thing in a loud voice at his bar "She" (meaning my friend) "drank five martinis in one hour" WHAT? I could see that this man was behaving in an irrational manner and I told him he was mistaken and we were leaving......at which point he continued to follow me out the door and yell at me. ??? I considered calling the police because his behavior was aggressive and bizarre. He was shouting something about his family and protecting them HOLY SHIT!!! not going back. If this owner thought that we were there to "tie one on" and that we were "being over served" that is was his responsibility to speak a lot sooner.....we were there for 3 hours!! It was his bar making the drinks!!! Further, if he was so worried about his "risk" then why didn't he order a taxi? Seems to me in retrospect his goal was more about making a scene for me and my friend. To make matters worse, I got sick from what I believe to be the seafood appetizer I had....the shrimp was a little old.
