When Doce is on, there are few better Mexican restaurants in Dallas. This latest visit was an "on" night. We went for dinner on a Friday to enjoy the gorgeous Dallas weather, sitting on the patio. Service was perfect as usual, seldom a problem with service. I had my usual La Carolina straight up while the wife tried something new, some kind of sweet drink with coconut milk and lime. I don't know the name but she loved it. The kid had Topochico ($6 for bottle, ouch!) The kid had the small guacamole and it is a generous portion with very good quality avocado and a slice on top. There is a small side of roasted poblano pepper that is quite spicy but delicious. I "stole" it from the kid and put on my tacos. Perfect. I had my favorite "Old Fashioned" tacos with flour tortillas and loved them. You two to an order for $17 plus red rice and Cole slaw. It's more than enough food. The ground beef is seasoned perfectly and I love it. I wish I knew what spices they put in that beef so I could make it at home. This place is pretty good! I always drive by it and decided to give it a try finally. Honestly doesn't really stand out compared to other places like Gloria's or Mi Cocina. Pretty standard Tex-Mex food for Dallas. Service here was great. Everyone was friendly and the food and drinks came out fast! I got the mole enchiladas and the classic frozen margarita. Everything was good. One thing I appreciated is that they're very generous with their guacamole appetizer. Sometimes you order guacamole somewhere for $8 and they bring you what looks like the amount in one avocado. I really liked the layout of the restaurant and the design. The most impressive thing about Doce Mesas is the ambiance. From the moment you pull up the place is impressive and as you walk in there is a crescendo of ambiance that culminated into an ultra-hip vibe. I sat inside, but quickly wished I had sat on the patio. You see, as elegant as the place is, it is also loud. Like really loud. Add to that we got seated in the "families with little kids" section and it was enough to put a cloud over the whole experience. I am not sure why a host would think we wanted to be in that section, but there we sat. The food was really good. We ordered Guacamole as an appetizer and Chicken Fajitas and Chicken Flautas as our main course. The Fajitas were topped with garlic butter, which while good, seemed to take some authenticity away from them. I got over that pretty quickly. Our server, Eric did a fine job. He was helpful and around just enough to keep us attended to without overwhelming us. Some of the best Mexican food we have had in a while. We sat on the back patio which has plenty of fans to keep everyone cool. Our waiter was very friendly and the service overall was outstanding. We started with queso which was absolutely delicious - thick with chunks of peppers. Their chips and salsa are also quite good. I would not call it fajitas, but the beef tenderloin dish is one of the best Mexican renditions I have ever had. The enchiladas are quite good but probably more like an 8.5 out of 10. Made a reservation at 8:15, and was seated at 8:10, the couple right next to us was seated at 8:15 and got served drinks and a champagne bottle while my husband and I haven't even been greeted....8:30 and still nothing. We left, told the host and she blinked and looked at me...and you can guess the couple was white & we are hispanic. My husband and I rack up a nice bill and always tip beautfully. These people have got to be joking. The place is soooooo noisy you have to scream to have a conversation. Watch your check very carefully. They add on things that they never told you they would be charging you for. They added an extra $15 to my check. They didn't get away with it but they tried. Very poor business sense/judgement. And, they charge $11.50 to valet park. Were the rates posted? NO They try to get over every where they can. And the food is nothing special. I will never go back there again and will negatively recommend it to my friends. So, I hope they are happy because this is what they accomplished. read more

Went to Doce Mesas for lunch today and was very disappointed. I ordered Combo #4 -- the brisket taco was cold and dry, honestly the worst taco I've ever had. Brisket should be warm and tender, not reheated and dry. The enchilada was only slightly warm and tasted like the chicken had been reheated. Overall, it felt like the food wasn't freshly cooked. The manager removed my $17 plate, which I appreciate, but we still spent over $70 for lunch for three. Dallas has much better Mexican food. I'd recommend Sueño Tex-Mex or Mesero instead. read more

A nearby restaurant that I intended to dine at was closed today so I quickly remembered Doce Mesas from a couple of favorable reviews by Yelpers about town, Stephen W. He was right. This is a great find in a convenient location but that's just to start. It checks all the boxes for my enjoyment. Pleasant atmosphere,good service, tolerable prices and of course good food. The food is more than acceptable,it's quite good. After examining the menu several times I took a chance on the Mole Chicken Enchiladas. Home run! The gamble paid off and this mole proved to strike that perfect balance between slight sweet edge and bitter undertones that results in the perfect bite. We also sampled the fish tacos,trying one fried and one grilled. Very good. The drinks are stout and authentically made. I would recommend this to anyone as I myself feel I've added another restaurant to my list of viable options. read more

We've been here many times and have always had amazing service but last night just really made me not ever want to go there again. We have always loved the service, food and drinks but last night we ordered a Barbie margarita, like we always do and it tasted terrible so we sent it back. It's basically a skinny margarita. When we mentioned that it didn't taste like it normally did, our waitress argued, "Well it's a skinny margarita so it's going to taste different" We mentioned that we were aware and that we've had it before and she acted somewhat disgruntled to have to replace it. We saw her and the bartender and another waiter convening at the bar behind us and the other waiter looked at us and shook his head and laughed at us. I also prefer my nachos cooked longer and sent them back and after that the service we received was pretty condescending until it was time to get our check. It was blatantly obvious that we were being made fun of. Just sad this as we always spend decent money there and tip 30% because we value the service industry but we won't be returning after feeling ganged up on. read more

We went to Doce Mesas for a late lunch. The decor is tres moderne. All white interior and lovely. The service is excellent and very friendly but professional. We had the Doce Mesas queso as an appetizer. I had the Chin Chin salad; my husband had the cheese enchiladas. The queso was mild with freshly roasted poblanos, but for a little kick it came with two roasted serranos and grilled onions on the side. So yummy! The Chin Chin salad was delicious- a wonderful little Asian fusion going on with the ginger-soy dressing. My husband is a cheese enchilada aficionado and loved the enchiladas. We found Doce Mesas when searching for a nearby Mexican restaurant. I ordered the shrimp tacos with rice and coleslaw. The taco flavor was great, and the coleslaw was light and refreshing. Even though it came with rice, I don't think it's needed because tacos usually don't come with rice. For dessert, we had their famous Tres Leches Cake, which was delicious and light. The restaurant has plenty of seating inside, and they also have an outdoor area with tables and chairs in front of a stage. The manager mentioned they'll soon start hosting music nights. Dined here for an early Mothers Day last night. Was so disappointed in this previously liked restaurant. Went early and there was plenty of tables yet it felt like they were doing us a favor to get one. Food lacked flavor and the usual pretty presentation. Service was attentive but we ordered two kids meal burgers and fries without seeing the kids menu. $18 each! Really!?! Can't help but wonder if we weren't intentionally shown the kids menu. Went a weekday night and it is such a sleek and nice place with futuristic and comfy chairs to fun art akin to Basquiat's "Red Kings" . Our server was FANTASTIC, took care of us and asked us for our input on the different salsas. They have a special one I got to sample with a sweet kick to it and it is a unique flavor I have not had before. The other ones are fairly mild so its not spicy at all. I got the #4 special with a brisket taco and green enchilada with chicken. Food looks pretty! Slaw was great to me. Beans and rice were just skippable. Brisket Taco ( one of my favorite type of foods) was quite dry, and needed a spice kick to it somehow. Green enchilada was just fair. This was my first time here. The ambiance is chill. It's a place where you can grab a drink after work, or meet up for dinner. The drinks are strong. I had the queso doce for an appetizer and it was the thing that I didn't know I wanted, until I tried it. The food, however wasn't as good as the drinks and queso. I liked the rice, but the carnitas on the taco was a little too slim for my liking, and the chicken enchilada just didn't hit like I thought it would. The service was decent. I have eaten here 3-4 times in the last couple months ... anytime anyone who has not been here asks me for my preference, I like to introduce them to Doce Mesas. The atmosphere is very trendy and comfortable, and the waitstaff is attentive but also laid back so we never felt like we were being hurried out. Drinks are good and food is so delicious! This place is very chic and the environment is so "Dallas" but the food is mediocre at best. My husband had actually booked a reserved table via open table for this place. When we got there, the hostess said they didn't take reservations. That's fine - they had a table available. But we let her know that open table was allowing reservations to be made for their restaurant and there may be some type of error. She told us we need to "look into that". We thought that was kind of rude considering we weren't upset, we were just letting her know there was a disconnect. The Blanca enchiladas - so bland. No seasoning on the chicken and the queso wasn't hot so it was slowly hardening (you know when you let queso sit? Yeah...). It was gross, I didn't finish it. The #5 - Blanca enchilada was gross. OMG!!! I give this place high marks! Everything about it was amazing! The server was amazing and attentive! She never let the glass go bare, she honored every request, and her attention to our table was stellar! The ambiance was immaculate and quaint. The restrooms were in tip top shape and smelled great. It looked like an upscale restaurant with a laid back vibe. And now the food...the unique take on Mexican food and/or Tex-Mex was refreshing and creative. It was delicious and hot off the press!!! Came here for the first time on a Monday afternoon on Labor Day around 4 PM. Parker in the lot - no valet, but lot is right outside restaurant. Place was pretty empty, but it was late afternoon. No happy hour offered. Chips are made in-house & very crunchy; on the thicker side. Salsa has good flavor - more blended texture instead of chunky. I'm not a fan of mole, so I can't comment on that. El Benito - Fruity, fresh, & sweet. Not bubbly. Kind of like a raspberry grapefruit lemonade. Strong - I got a buzz after 1/3 drink (on an empty stomach). La Carolina - Pretty Good. My husband is very particular on margaritas & he said this one is pretty good. Strong. Doce Queso - Very creamy & good flavor. Pairs well with the chips. Spinach is chopped adequately & not too big. Evident artichoke pieces. Stayed relatively fluid even at the end of the meal. Gulf shrimp tacos - Large tortillas. Shrimp is charred & Smokey. A touch overcooked. White rice is nice & fluffy. Coleslaw - not mayonnaise based; light. More veggie taste. Norteñas - I completely forgot to ask for flour tortillas since I typically don't like corn tortillas, but the corn tortillas were surprisingly ok. Corn tortillas have a surprising amount of spring to it - not mushy like most corn tortillas after they get wet. Spanish rice - Full flavor. Savory & very flavorful. Probably a lot of butter & fat, but delicious. Chili con carne - Reminds me more of regular Texas chili - more beans than meat. Refried beans - average. Overall, this place was pretty good. Service was good - our waitress was very nice & respectful. All the food had good flavor. Price is reasonable - one appetizer, two alcoholic drinks, & two entrees came out to be ~$75.
