Great casual diner with a classy Chicago tavern-like feel to it. Our server was great- super friendly and had a lot to share about the menu! We all got the spicy rigatoni which had an excellent red chili sauce that paired nicely with the unique stracciatella. I'd say it had a tasteful spice but the spicy food fiends out there might be left unsatisfied. The brownie!!!! was also just as good as it looks! Magically it wasn't too sweet even with the cherry filling and ice cream on top. Sweet treats are my biggest weakness so I might be a little biased, but my friends also had positive reviews so you can take their word for it too. I keep giving rigatoni a try. I'm going to have to accept that it just isn't my pasta. I got the Chicken Parmesan that came with rigatoni. The chicken parm was really good. Want to win me over? Put lots of cheese. The rigatoni? Not bad, just not my preferred pasta. It didn't help that while the chicken was hot, the pasta wasn't. I got the famous chicken tenders to go (tomorrow's lunch). They tasted really good, but I was not aware that the breading would be soft instead of crispy. That could have made them perfect. She let me know that the strips came with coleslaw and suggested fries instead. I said yes, because why not. Be warned that there's an up charge for the fries, not a substitute. In addition , the fries are just placed in a sack, not a closed container, but a sack. I also ordered a Bellini. It was way too strong. I asked if I could get one with less alcohol and was told they're premade. No offer to take it back. I think one reviewer said theirs had very little alcohol. I guess it depends on who's on Bellini patrol. read more

We tried this place for lunch recently and had a good experience. We were sat in a booth on the side of the bar and it was comfortable and quiet. We tried the deviled eggs and the fries to start with. Both had great flavor. The tuna melt was tasty. The sauce on it should be an option for the fries. The white truffle gnocchi was delicious. Delicious food and decent service. The ambiance is very similar to Hudson House and the food is tasty. It is a little on the pricier side but the ambiance makes up for that. We came for lunch on a weekend and it was not super packed which was nice. They have a patio that is heated and enclosed during the winter which makes for plenty of more searing options. The food itself was tasty and the portions are plenty big. The burger was delicious and their shoestring fries are not to be missed. Cracker crust pizza and huge chicken parm as well! I'd definitely recommend this spot for a great meal! The only miss for us was our server was a but slow in checking on us but was not the end of the world. read more

This is an INSPIRED Chicago restaurant. Not very close to Chicago. Staring off with their beers... you can't try even being a Chicago tavern when you don't have old style. We got the chicken tenders and as they were good, they were Japanese style not Chicago. Fantastic dining option from the Vandelay group. The ambiance is super warm in here and can be great for many occasions including date night or getting together with friends. We enjoyed a regular martini and espresso martini which were part of a great happy hour. We then split a salad and pizza (Bill Murray Special) which were also amazing. I really like DL Mack's! I've been to both locations and they are equally great places to enjoy. I'm from Chicago and miss the food so it's right up my alley. Staff at both are great seem to be trained well and attentive. And the ambiance is nice they have created a great experience. I'm torn every time I go but I think I figured it out. They have created a fine dining experience with a limited menu and a lot of pub food. It's like a pub wanting to be more than a pub. I love the attire of the staff and appreciate the attempt. Even the food is not disappointing but it's pricy for what you get. It's enjoyable but I'm always thinking as I'm sitting there, I'm missing something and I think it's the connection between fine dining and pub. It doesn't quite connect. I wish I took pictures but totally forgot. A friend and I met up here for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty empty. I did have my baby in a car seat and felt like the booths were a little tight. Other than that, it was a good dining experience. I ordered the tuna melt which was so delicious and a beauty. The salad it came with was also very good. Our group recently ate dinner at the Hillcrest location of DL Macks. We enjoyed most of our experience. I ordered a non-alcoholic beverage, labeled as such on the menu. Unfortunately, the server brought me the drink with alcohol in it. I noticed the taste of alcohol but before I got the opportunity to mention this to our server, the manager came to our table to let us know about the error. They apologized and I accepted it as an honest mistake. For other people, however, this kind of mistake cannot happen. While it does not negatively impact my review, others need to know about the situation because of its potential liability. I think some confusion might occur because they placed "non-alcoholic" in parentheses on the menu. Everyone, from the bartenders and servers to the customers, needs to align on what that means by default. Other than this, our group really enjoyed our time at the restaurant. We felt its "old Chicago" design offered a casual and fun atmosphere for you to dress up or down depending on the occasion. We found that the food, especially the pizza, tasted fantastic! And, despite the initial issue with the non-alcoholic beverage, we experienced good service. Overall, I recommend DL Macks. Make reservations because they get busy! Also, they do not offer a valet service. You might find it difficult to park in the lot. But, you can park on one side of the neighborhood street or in the nearby garage with its public parking entrance on the other side. read more

We met some friends here and it was a lot of fun! The food was very good! We all got some drinks which were tasty. The food was incredible. We got two of the same pizza plus my chicken entree and our friend got a burger. The pizza and my chicken were very good! I didn't want to give any of my entree to my girlfriend because it was so good. However our friends burger he said was not very good :(. We found D.L. Mack's while running errands in Dallas and it as an unexpected delight! It was a weekday afternoon and not busy at all for a lunch crowd. Had an old school charm with the dark wood, lighting and tiling; loved the classic look of it all! Our server was nice but a little slow when it came to refilling waters or checking on us. Kitchen was rather slow as well even for our salads to come out took quiet a while. While service was slow, food was great! We both ordered a Caesar salad each and split a Bill Murray Special pizza. The crust had the perfect balance of crispiness and chewiness, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. Our accidental discovery of D.L. Mack's turned out to be a delightful surprise. One positive is they brought out a hamburger after we pointed out the inedible chicken strips. Many other neighboring restaurants that are highly rated. Avoid THIS one! read more

I'm an smu student, and this has been my go-to spot for 3 years. I've always loved the atmosphere, but their new menu is very controversial for a lot of DL Mack's regulars. They took away so many solid menu items (rip Tuna Melt) and added 3 new burgers which just feels unnecessary. I was also surprised that they didn't take this opportunity to add more gluten free options. I still love DL Mack's but it's just not the same! read more

The wife and I returned here for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. This is a cute little place across from SMU that attracts students and the University Park/Highland Park crowd. The ambience is traditional and appealing. I like the inside because it feels homey and a place you would want to hang out. We started with a couple of beers. Unfortunately, they do not have any draft beers which is rather odd given the prominence of the bar to the rest of the restaurant. Bottles only. I dinged the restaurant for not have anything on tap. We ordered deviled eggs and they were very good. I would definitely get them again. Very tasty. The small mixed salad (enough for one, not to share) was also very good and we both really liked it. The main reason for 3 stars instead of 4 is that our pizza was not very good. We got the Chicagoan which the waiter said was his favorite. The pizza we received did not have crispy crust. Their paper thin crust is, for me, the main attraction, but the crust was not crispy in the least. Maybe they did not cook it long enough? Maybe the dough was too watery? I don't know, but it just was not good crust. It was not doughy inside which would suggest it was raw, but it just lacked the crisp that one would expect with extremely thin dough. The second thing wrong was that the pizza was unbelievably salty. Almost inedible. I am not sure what was going on with that pizza, but I would not get order it again. Our server, Nate, was friendly and efficient. No complaints about the service. But they really need to work on getting the pizza crust right. read more
