I was in Dallas visiting a friend and stopped in at State & Allen on 9/20 around 3pm, party of six, Check #84. This was one of the more frustrating meals I've had, and not because of a single bad ticket. Food I ordered steak and eggs with scrambled eggs, no bacon in the potatoes, and my steak medium well. The wrong plate arrived first, over easy eggs meant for my friend. When it was corrected, my friend received the plate meant for me, so his potatoes came without bacon even though he'd ordered his with bacon. My corrected plate looked rushed, the steak wasn't warm, and the eggs and potatoes looked thrown together. Three of us ordered steak and eggs at three different temperatures, and all three arrived equally well done and dry, missing both the chimichurri and toast that the dish comes with according to the menu. Dietary error, and a pattern My friend ordered the breakfast tacos with no meat. The tacos were rolled and wrapped shut, and he bit into one without unwrapping it first, only to find it contained bacon. He's vegetarian and doesn't eat pork, so he had to spit it out. Our server said she needed to show the chef and disappeared for a long stretch. By the time she returned to say the tacos were being remade, the rest of us had already finished eating, leaving him without food at the table. His tacos arrived along with the check, and that was the only apology of the meal. This isn't an isolated incident either. I found a review from about two weeks ago & one from two months ago where in both a customer with a gluten intolerance/allergy was served a regular pizza instead of the gluten-free one they'd ordered. The owner's response at the time said the team took it seriously and had reinforced procedures for verifying dietary requests before food left the kitchen. Based on our visit, that clearly didn't stick. Mishandling dietary restrictions isn't just a service issue, it's a health and safety issue, and this location appears to have a recurring gap here. Service Our server rarely checked on our table and seemed focused mainly on the table next to us. I had to actively wave her down more than once, and she didn't stop moving when we did get her attention. We barely got a chance to ask for a to go box for my friend's remade tacos. Billing and drinks A coffee we never ordered was added to my check ($2.75). We paid via a handheld device with just a tap-and-tip screen, so we didn't see an itemized bill until after paying. I also asked for Coke Zero and was served and charged for Diet Coke without being told they don't carry it. Any one of these could be a bad day. Together, with a documented pattern of dietary mistakes and little real follow-up from staff, it left us with a poor impression. Extremely disappointing experience at State & Allen. My fiancé, cousin, and I stopped in after seeing how great the food looked and were excited to try it. Unfortunately, the service we received was some of the worst hospitality I've experienced. After waiting several minutes to be seated despite no one in front of us and no one being at the host stand, we were seated at the bar. My cousin had the remainder of a drink from a nearby establishment, and when asked to discard it, we immediately complied without issue. We then sat for nearly 20 minutes without anyone taking our order, offering water, or even acknowledging us after the drink was retrieved. When I finally flagged down the bartender, he approached with an unnecessarily hostile attitude and informed us that he could not serve us because an outside drink had been brought in. What made this even more confusing was that the drink had already been removed by management, and at no point were we told that we would not be served. We were there specifically to order food, not drinks, yet no one bothered to ask or communicate anything before making assumptions. Instead of addressing the situation professionally, the bartender became increasingly confrontational and ultimately told us to leave. Meanwhile, the manager explained that the issue was related to outside alcohol, but by then we had already spent nearly 20 minutes being ignored and denied basic service. The lack of communication, hospitality, and customer service was unacceptable. We left feeling stereotyped, prejudged, and unwelcome. If your staff is going to refuse service, at the very least communicate that respectfully and immediately rather than ignoring guests and then treating them with hostility when they ask simple questions. State & Allen has a lot of work to do when it comes to customer service and guest experience. I would definitely give this establishment zero stars if I could, but one is the minimum. read more

The walls are lined with TVs showing the game of the day, and the space is clean and well maintained. On my visit, it was filled with locals, many with their dogs, enjoying afternoon beers while chatting and watching the game. The food menu is standard bar fare: chicken strips, sandwiches, salads, pizzas and burgers. The bar offers a solid selection of domestic and craft beers on tap, along with a full bar and wine service. It's a good spot for nearby residents and friends to gather, but not a destination worth driving across town for. If you're in the neighborhood, it's worth stopping by. read more

I visited State & Allen tonight for the second time, and unfortunately, I left extremely disappointed by what I overheard. During my visit, I heard a manager, who I believe was named Jordan, and a bartender making several disparaging and inappropriate comments about guests at the bar. I do not recall the bartender's name, but the conversation was loud and clear enough for nearby guests to hear. It was incredibly unprofessional and honestly shocking to hear employees particularly someone in a management position speak so poorly about people who are patronizing your establishment. It left me wondering whether this is considered acceptable behavior at State & Allen and whether guests are routinely discussed this way by staff. Regardless of anyone's personal opinion of a guest, there is an expectation of basic professionalism and respect. I would strongly encourage your leadership team to address this, particularly with the manager involved. Guests should not have to wonder what is being said about them by employees after they sit down, and spend money at your establishment. Went for brunch on New Year's Day. Even though it was a week day, they offered the full brunch menu. We had a reservation but probably would have been seated right away anyway, but again it was a holiday and they got super busy before we left so I'm sure that was not typical. Our server was good but service was super slow and I had to remind them of things a couple of times. For larger groups they have one really large booth and several pub height tables. The only issue with those is the chairs are not comfortable, especially for short people and there is nowhere to put your feet to make it more comfortable. That's a thing for me...if you're short, you understand. Other than that, it's a large dining area with a rolling garage type door that opens up during good weather and a nice size patio area. Parking can be scarce in the neighborhood but if you don't mind walking a couple of blocks, you're good. I ordered the bagel sandwich and it did not disappoint! The chicken was perfectly fried. The seasoning and batter combined with the pickles on the bun reminded me of a certain competitor that is closed on Sundays. The egg was well done and the ham grilled with just a touch of char to it. It was a hearty sandwich that turned into two meals. The purple potato bacon'd hash is so good, and it looks like a small portion but it's very filling. We also got an order of the roasted apple pie pancakes to share (and still had leftovers!) and they were so fluffy and decadent. Not overly sweet, but sweet enough. The food is easily a 5 while the service on this visit was just a 3-4 but still good. Nothing that will keep us from going back, for sure. read more

The staff seemed completely disorganized and clueless, and our food took forever to arrive. Yes, it was a busy Sunday, but that's no excuse for service this bad. There weren't even basic condiments on the table. When we asked, our server looked at us like we were crazy, brought out a tiny cup of salt, and said he couldn't find any pepper. Seriously--how does a restaurant not know where the salt and pepper are? My one complaint is that when you're ordering online for take out orders they add $1.5 - $.50 for gluten free even if the meal doesn't require anything extra to be gluten free - not sure what this is about. My father in law had the steak and eggs, my mother in love and wife had the turkey burger and I had the steak sandwich. All courses served exceeded our expectations. The ambiance here is great- relaxing, inviting, spacious. The weather was nice so there was a lot of fresh air coming through. The calamari was good but the peppers were placed on top so some of the calamari was soggy. The sweet potato fries were cold so I sent them back and got elote. Theirs is my favorite take on non-traditional elote. It was also spicy, in a good way. The burgers were surprisingly flavorless, even after adding some salt and pepper, things weren't much better.
