Extremely disappointing experience at State & Allen. My fiancé, cousin, and I stopped in after seeing how great the food looked and were excited to try it. Unfortunately, the service we received was some of the worst hospitality I've experienced. After waiting several minutes to be seated despite no one in front of us and no one being at the host stand, we were seated at the bar. My cousin had the remainder of a drink from a nearby establishment, and when asked to discard it, we immediately complied without issue. We then sat for nearly 20 minutes without anyone taking our order, offering water, or even acknowledging us after the drink was retrieved. When I finally flagged down the bartender, he approached with an unnecessarily hostile attitude and informed us that he could not serve us because an outside drink had been brought in. What made this even more confusing was that the drink had already been removed by management, and at no point were we told that we would not be served. We were there specifically to order food, not drinks, yet no one bothered to ask or communicate anything before making assumptions. Instead of addressing the situation professionally, the bartender became increasingly confrontational and ultimately told us to leave. Meanwhile, the manager explained that the issue was related to outside alcohol, but by then we had already spent nearly 20 minutes being ignored and denied basic service. The lack of communication, hospitality, and customer service was unacceptable. We left feeling stereotyped, prejudged, and unwelcome. If your staff is going to refuse service, at the very least communicate that respectfully and immediately rather than ignoring guests and then treating them with hostility when they ask simple questions. State & Allen has a lot of work to do when it comes to customer service and guest experience. I would definitely give this establishment zero stars if I could, but one is the minimum. read more

This place absolutely deserves five stars. The service was outstanding from start to finish--friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The patio was spotless and made for a really relaxing atmosphere. You can tell they take pride in the details. The food was just as impressive. Everything tasted fresh, and the pulled pork chili was a standout--rich, flavorful, and easily one of the best I've had. If you're on the fence about trying it, don't be. The walls are lined with TVs showing the game of the day, and the space is clean and well maintained. On my visit, it was filled with locals, many with their dogs, enjoying afternoon beers while chatting and watching the game. The food menu is standard bar fare: chicken strips, sandwiches, salads, pizzas and burgers. The bar offers a solid selection of domestic and craft beers on tap, along with a full bar and wine service. It's a good spot for nearby residents and friends to gather, but not a destination worth driving across town for. If you're in the neighborhood, it's worth stopping by. read more

Went for brunch on New Year's Day. Even though it was a week day, they offered the full brunch menu. We had a reservation but probably would have been seated right away anyway, but again it was a holiday and they got super busy before we left so I'm sure that was not typical. Our server was good but service was super slow and I had to remind them of things a couple of times. For larger groups they have one really large booth and several pub height tables. The only issue with those is the chairs are not comfortable, especially for short people and there is nowhere to put your feet to make it more comfortable. That's a thing for me...if you're short, you understand. Other than that, it's a large dining area with a rolling garage type door that opens up during good weather and a nice size patio area. Parking can be scarce in the neighborhood but if you don't mind walking a couple of blocks, you're good. I ordered the bagel sandwich and it did not disappoint! The chicken was perfectly fried. The seasoning and batter combined with the pickles on the bun reminded me of a certain competitor that is closed on Sundays. The egg was well done and the ham grilled with just a touch of char to it. It was a hearty sandwich that turned into two meals. The purple potato bacon'd hash is so good, and it looks like a small portion but it's very filling. We also got an order of the roasted apple pie pancakes to share (and still had leftovers!) and they were so fluffy and decadent. Not overly sweet, but sweet enough. The food is easily a 5 while the service on this visit was just a 3-4 but still good. Nothing that will keep us from going back, for sure. read more

The staff seemed completely disorganized and clueless, and our food took forever to arrive. Yes, it was a busy Sunday, but that's no excuse for service this bad. There weren't even basic condiments on the table. When we asked, our server looked at us like we were crazy, brought out a tiny cup of salt, and said he couldn't find any pepper. Seriously--how does a restaurant not know where the salt and pepper are? We sat in the back room and watched people who came in at least 25 minutes after us get appetizers before we even saw our meals. My salad came with olives after I specifically asked for none. The restaurant has a fantastic patio and boasts a large interior with plenty of seating. The surrounding area is a beautiful neighborhood, which adds the overall appealing nature of the space. It's the kind of dining space where you want to hang out and enjoy a leisurely meal. Unfortunately, the service and food didn't live up to the setting. Our server clearly didn't want to be there and very rarely checked in on us, which made us feel unwelcome and neglected. I have been here several times and have had a lot of great experiences. So many gluten free options! Just ask your server for gluten free because it's not on the menu. My one complaint is that when you're ordering online for take out orders they add $1.5 - $.50 for gluten free even if the meal doesn't require anything extra to be gluten free - not sure what this is about. My father in law had the steak and eggs, my mother in love and wife had the turkey burger and I had the steak sandwich. All courses served exceeded our expectations. Additionally my partner had the strawberry mango salad and the lettuce was wilted and the avocado (which was an additional 2.5 dollars) was brown. So you know that one friend? The one you love hanging out with, but they're always flaking on you? Yet you still continue to get excited every time you make plans, only to be left disappointed? That's basically how I feel about State & Allen. After a hard week of being poors, my boyfriend and I decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner. Order out from a good place, grab a bottle of gas station wine and chill out on the couch. We decided on S&A because I had a craving for their crab dip. Since my boyfriend and I are both hermits, we always order out. Our last time ordering from S&A was months ago, and was a mess. I'm pretty sure they put the wrong ticket on the bag because our order was completely wrong. Nonetheless, the food here is actually good so we decided to let bygones be bygones and used our hunger to decide to order at S&A. I might have understated my boyfriends hunger because he treated to an extra salad so I didn't have to make lunch for tomorrow (I'm a lucky girl, I know) as well as the brownie dessert as a special surprise. When I went in to pick up the order, I wasn't aware of the additional food. So when the gentlemen who helped me handed me one bag, i accepted it and walked out. It wasn't until we got back that we realized half the order was missing. So we left the first bag, got back in the car and headed back. I want to clarify I'm not blaming the server who helped me - these things happen. He made an honest mistake, the same one I did, of only grabbing one bag. He was very pleasant and helpful. The BIGGER problem is my boyfriends sandwich had bacon on it, when the instructions said to put it on the side. For personal / religious reasons, my boyfriend doesn't eat bacon. He has no desire to eat anything that's been touched by it. I'm a pescatarian so I couldn't eat it. We got it on the side because, as aforementioned, we're poors who wanted our moneys worth and planned to treat my dog. We were already home again by the time I had the thought to check the order when I realized, so we just called it quits on S&A. Only by the time we got back the second time, my dog had gotten into the first bag and ate three containers of honey mustard. Which is toxic to dogs. A couple of hours and hundreds of unexpected bucks later, our food was cold but dog was safe. I'm not blaming S&A for the events of our evening, but for the butterfly effect to occur there needs to be that initial flap of the wings. I wish they were diligent and checked the ticket to make sure we got the full order. I wish S&A could figure out their organization, because it's a consistent experience of something being wrong when you go there. I wish I didn't love their crab dip, because it's time I end my food love affair with this place. read more
