It is best to have a guide your first time here, but hopefully this review will serve as some support if you don't. If you want a proper cheeseburger, go in the back door, not the front (saloon) doors. If it's gameday, go an hour or two before the game. Order your food at the counter, then proceed out of that room to the back bar. Order a shiner bock to accompany your cheeseburger. Proceed to the back by the pool tables and say hi to the rattlesnake in the far back. Around that time, someone will be calling your name for food. If you've got time to hang out and play pool with some friends, or before a game, grab a pitcher and find a table. This place still has its pre-game Northgate charm! I took a buddy of mine to The Chicken before Argentina played Honduras at Kyle Field and it was quite the experience. We entered from the campus side and I was embarrassed as to not knowing how to get to the ordering counter (lol) but we eventually made it. My chicken fried chicken sandwhich was decent but it needed some onion or pickle or extra mayo. The onion rings were spectacular! The price point was meh but it now is absolutely paying for the experience. There were ample sports matches on and it was cool to watch USA play Germany in soccer. Incredible staff/service! We were in town for a Texas A&M game and stopped by the Dixie Chicken a couple of times, once on a Saturday after the game and again on a Sunday. They were very different experiences. On game day, it is extremely busy with fans. The food lines are huge (so long we were not able to get food) and Is packed. We were very lucky to find a picnic table in front of a TV. There is also if atmosphere--at one end are a couple of rattlers. The place is really run down with graffiti everywhere, but comfortable. They serve the typical bar food which people seem to love. As noted above, there is a long line to order and then you wait for you name to be called. They have a nice selection of draft beers. I had a Yuengling Lager and a Blue Moon. The staff is very busy, but friendly. Do not expect table service, you need to get your drinks at the bar and they carefully work your way through the crowd. Sunday was a different experience. Even though there were NFL games on, we had a whole big room just about to ourselves. I get the feeling this Northgate area thrives on game day, but not so busy on other days. read more

First the positive, the place had character. The exterior had an old west saloon look. Inside it looked like a dive bar. It had a fun atmosphere. The man who took the order was friendly. After ordering, you seat yourself. They call your name. Now the problems. I ordered the chicken fried steak sandwich. My husband and daughter ordered the 2 chicken strips meal. My son ordered the cheese burger. My husband and daughter both said their chicken strips were ok. My husband liked his fries while my daughter didn't like it. She said it was soggy and unevenly seasoned. My son said his burger was very mid. I didn't like my sandwich at all. It wasn't what I expected. I thought it would be like an actual thin cut of meat but it's like someone whipped hamburger till it was a paste then battered and fried it. We came to College Station for the ND-Texas A&M game (GO IRISH!) and were looking for a cool place to hangout the day before. We heard the Dixie Chicken was just like our favorite ND bar the Backer and they were right. They have a large space with multiple bars service drinks constantly. Yes, it's a local institution, but I was really let down by the food. It's walk up counter style ordering and then they call your name to come pick up your food. Food came out quick and staff were friendly, no problems with either of those. The chicken fried chicken on toasted bread was just meh, ok. Chicken was juicy and not too greasy, but it just didn't have a lot of flavor to it. It was bland. Added a small order (which was actually a decent portion) of the Tijuana Fries. With a name like Tijuana Fries, I was expecting something with some heat. All it consisted of was fries smothered in Monterrey Jack and cheddar cheese. The picture on their website looks like it might have jalapenos and bacon on it, but mine didn't. These two items and a Bud Light was $17.75 - OUCH! The burger was pitiful looking and was $5 with no fries. Whataburger has MUCH better burgers than this one was. Positives: Plenty of seating 8 pool tables or so. This is the kind of place that gloriously epitomizes all that defines what a dive bar should be. Even the name is from a rock and roll song by the band Little Feat. Personally, I think the 1973 Little Feat song "Dixie Chicken" is a great song and reminds me of what a song should be like playing in a dive bar. The song is filled with attitude and got a killer groove. This bar has been here forever, ok, maybe not forever, but a long time. Generations of college kids and locals have had a beer or three here. For food, I guess they are best known for their burgers. While they ate nothing incredible, I have to say that this place is more about the divey atmosphere. I guess the Freddy burger, named after the cook,is the way to go. Again, it's just a half pound cheeseburger. If you find yourself in the area, seeing on by. It's a dive bar for the students, offering drink specials most weeknights. I came in for Whiskey Wednesday, and Whooop! They pour heavy handed shots. Yeehaw! Beers are cheap, and they have a wide selection of cheap beers. Be sure to carve your name somewhere for prosperity sake. The tables are all carved to hell, and the bathroom seems to be a fine place to carve your own name in case you forget it. The staff is nice, and they seem to have seen it all. They offer merch! The playlist here is totally epic. All Texas bands, or ones who sing about Texas. The food here is rather mediocre, nothing to write home about. It's bar food. Plain and simple. There's always so many people there just having a good time, drink prices are unmatched, and you get to carve your name on the tables. What more could you want?
