We went to the Rough Draught whiskey bar the night before a football game. This is a really cool place with an INCREDIBLE whiskey list. We had been drinking beer, so I stuck to beer except for an old fashioned (which was excellent and used Buffalo Trace). They also have an awesome selection of draft beers. I had a Live Oak Hefeweizen which was excellent. Service was excellent both at the restaurant and the attached pizza area. Since we had been drinking a while, we decided to have pizza at the shop attached to the bar. They have a nice pizza oven and this was excellent. I forget the name, but it has a nice thin crust with great cheese and topped with sausage and mushrooms. This place is just about perfect. Ambiance, awesome staff, good mix of seating - including patio - and LOTS AND LOTS OF WHISKEY. Whiskey is my hobby. Specifically American whiskey. I'm not often as impressed as I am by Rough Draught. Awesome, awesome selection. Good people who enjoy talking whiskey. The interior and decoration and walls - it all just GOES. It's perfect. Sadly they were out of a key ingredient or two to make pizza when we were there - during Thanksgiving week, so... not "normal" timing - so we sadly could not try their pizza. But we enjoyed multiple great pours, some good cocktails, great conversation, and exploring all of the details in the decor. Went here after a big football game and they were open and in a good location so we tried it out. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the pizza. They have a wood burning oven where they cook your personal pizza which is $15+ dollars. I had the margarita. Service is hard to rank because you go up to the counter to order, but I will say our table could have been cleaned before we got there. However, again, this was right after a night game and the restaurant was also a packed bar so I am impressed. It was my first time in there, but it was bigger than I thought and had a couple sections and an outdoor area so there's plenty of different but similarly comfortable areas. read more

ABSOLUTELY the worst cocktails. I rarely rate any establishment a one-star, but I just had what had to be the worst Old Fashion and Whiskey Sour imaginable. The Old Fashion was just flat-out not good, on top of that it was a very stingy pour and to top it all off they poured it into a FULL glass of small cubed ice, I have NO idea how you call yourself a "whiskey bar" and serve this drink on that type of ice. The best part was, there was no twist to the orange rind it was just tossed in the glass. The Whiskey Sour was almost undrinkable, it tasted like they took bottled sour mix put a dash of whiskey in the glass and said "good luck" Not typically, this is what I would expect in some dive bar or night club, but again to call yourself a "Whiskey Bar" ehhh just an absolute fail. read more

I absolutely love Rough Draught. I'm not even a big whiskey drinker but they still have a great selection when it comes to other drinks. It's definitely one of the more chill bars on Northgate which is nice if you want to go out in College Station but want to be a bit more low key. The atmosphere is very rustic, there's lots of seating, games to play, and they're about to open a pizza shop that will be next door as well. If you go, I suggest getting the berry Pimms cup, it's super refreshing. Also, don't forget to ask for the crackers! They're a little hidden gem that they keep behind the bar and they're to die for. The classiest bar in College Station, hands down, no competition. They call themselves a Whiskey bar and Whiskey is what they do. Their strong suit is bourbon, rye and texas whiskeys. Their selection of these is extremely impressive. They have more normal selections of scotch, gin and liqueurs with a few stars thrown in to give some dazzle. (Irish for example mostly features the entire Jameson's line - a solid choice but normal - and the Tullamore and Bushmill line. The exclamation points are Redbreast and Green Spot. Scotches are more like Glenlivet, Glenfiddich but they do carry the new awesome Suntorys. You can't get a lot of those bottles anywhere else in BCS except at Rough Draught. Bourbon and Rye however are the total star of the show here. I won't even try to make a list. It is just one fascinating selection after the next. College Station drinking is undergraduate drinking. Beer in plastic cups. Commercially flavored vodka and rum. Margaritas made by formula. Microbrews for professors and for undergraduates with better palates. In Lilliputia, a normal man stands like a giant ... and by College Station standards - Rough Draught is the Holy Tabernacle of small batch whiskeys and finely crafted single malts. For a whiskey bar the bar tenders do not know what they are talking about. I ordered the new fashioned which was terrible! They have absolutely no variety of bitters which is really disappointing for a whiskey bar. I asked a different bartender (she was very sweet) to put an extra sugar cube in my drink and she added two a muddled cherry and a TON of cherry juice. It was completely undrinkable. When she handed back my drink the first bartender said a snide comment under her breath about my request. I will not return. This is because of the quality and the attitude given to me. I would like to add the second bartender was trying very hard to help me and had a great attitude! read more

Been here 3 times since it opened and I liked it. They had my favorite beer (Lone Pint IPA-Yellow Rose). It has a nice atmosphere down to the details. Bartenders already appear fairly proficient. 2/3 times they were playing good music. AND it's dog friendly! I really like how they whole front of the bar opens up on nice days. I could see sitting there not so pleasant if there are many smokers on the porch though... Also-wish they had a better happy hour. However, I was disappointed when I arrived on Saturday evening and they didn't have any peach left for drinks nor did they have any limes for mojitos. My husband and I walked in, only 5 customers present, two workers behind the bar and one sitting at the bar. We sat right in front of Randy the bartender and she didn't make any effort to welcome us or even say hello. After sitting for a couple minutes Randy finally looks at my husband and states very rudely "there's no smoking in here, you have to go out side" both of us look at her and state "the cigar is not lit" her response "o....well I just saw it" and is silent. My husband then states "is that your way of asking us what we want?" She immediately got an attitude and a face that made it very apparent she was not willing to help us. Thomas the other bartender jumps in and immediately shows his knowledge of the bar. My husband begins asking for different specialty whiskers, which they do t have most. So I settle on a mojito, just have have a drink. And of course they're out of Bacardi or any other quality rum. He offered the house rum at a different price, by this time I just wanted to leave but settled on the house rum. While we were finishing our drink a customer comes in and asks Randy how to make a Vegas bomb, which she is incorrect about, and everyone else in the bar agrees. She immediately gets attitude with the other customer and says, "well that how I make them so....ya." My suggestion, better staff, that is knowledgeable about their products, or any bar knowledge, and has customer service skills. We understand being out of some liquors as it was a Sunday. Perfectly serviceable place, and one of only a few Northgate establishments adults might be interested in. There are two rooms, and the one farthest to the right as you enter is the more intimate and inviting of the two. The layout is classy, lots of wood and subdued light. A large illuminated menu of Texas beer is on the wall, and its a decent selection. While I love Texas beer, far too much skews toward the IPA and over-hopped varieties, so mixing it a bit more here would be nice. They have a large and enticing spirits collection, though nowhere near what The Republic has in stock. I have found their cocktails to be very hit and miss here, and my happy hour friends have as well. Sometimes they come out right, and other times you are left scratching your head. There is no food, which is a major bummer. I like something to snack on while I drink. Adding bar snacks would be a nice touch. read more

Im in my 30s and think this place was great until my last visit. I was told they weren't serving out of their locked cabinet. So as I understand it, the 20 to 25 dollar a pour cabinet was off limits that evening but its a business that sells whiskey and wants to make money. I have a pretty nice whiskey collection myself and if it were not for a few bottles they have under lock and key I wouldn't have much of a need to go there. Seeing as I took my friend there , I bought 2 glasses of Macallan at 18 to 20 a glass tipped 20 dollars and then I was offered their eagle rare 17 because it was " the last of the bottle," jeez, thanks. I met the owner before , he is awesome and was extremely welcoming, professional and gracious, so I'll go back, but the tool in a bartender's outfit and Chuck Taylor all stars who was anything but a welcoming professional bartender gets no business from me . If you don't want to sell the whiskey you have in a whiskey bar, then leave it at home . This is hands down my Favorite bar in College Station! It is not only beautiful but has so much soul. It has the feel of an old school speakeasy and hands down the nicest bathrooms on Northgate!. Everything in this bar has a story from the old chicago bricks, the vintage whiskey boxes, and the wood taken from a 100 yr old building, old recycled church piano. They have the best staff and make incredible drinks with fresh fruit, mint, and of course the largest selection of whiskey around.
