Met up with a friend for happy hour. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by the bartender, Kyle. He told me about the happy hour specials and also informed me that it was free pool night (on Mondays). I'm not a huge fan of whiskey, but I've found that whiskey bars tend to have amazing craft cocktails. I browsed the HH menu and noticed a Whiskey Sour. I actually like a Clarified Whiskey Sour and was curious to see how it compared. The Whiskey Sour wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as the Clarified Sour that I've had at Reserve 101 in Houston. Kyle told me they're working on some clarified cocktails. I also ordered a Boulevardier (which isn't on the HH menu). Kyle admitted that he had never made one. He quickly looked up the ingredients and made one for me and it wasn't bad! I've only had this cocktail one other time before so I didn't have much to compare it to, but I did enjoy it. They have a small cigar menu. Cigars can be smoked outside on the patio (which is shared with Las Perlas and Caña Rum Bar). I liked the laid back feel between the pool tables and the rustic decor (it felt like I was in a lodge). Though I'm not a big whiskey drinker, I did enjoy the cocktails as well as the ambiance. read more

If you are a whiskey drinker, you will find a fine collection of bottles here. Or rather - you will find a very very fine collection of scotches here. There are some highly interesting bourbons as well. The selection of ryes is thin. If you read Whiskey Advocate (which I have been known to do), the rye curating will give you no thrills. The selection of Irish is thin as well - but no blame on that point. The population of upscale Irishes is just not that large, once you pass some over-rated cliches like Redbreast. * * * Seven Grand however is not an abstract name. That is how much you will pay in order to drink here. The prices for two ounces of many of those beverages will make the eyes pop out of your head sideways and go running out the front door. In more than a few cases, two drinks here will cost you close to what you would pay for a full bottle purchased at a liquor store. Now to be sure - bar drinking is expensive. That kind of percentage markup is not unheard of in the industry. But when you move up the price range for the raw material, The absolute amount of money you are overpaying to have that drink goes up astronomically. I will pay big for a peak experience I will remember for the rest of my life. (See my review of Craft Omakase.) I will not pay big for a random experiment with a bottle that could be wonderful and could be overrated. It is more economical to just buy the bottle. If the experiment works, I get a free month of legendary drinking. To my mind, bottle testing at Seven Grand just doesn't make sense. read more

If you like whiskey and you haven't been here yet, are you really even a fan of the spirit? This is the place to go for the widest selection of bottles around, with knowledgeable bartenders that can discuss their finer points at length, as long as it's not busy. Happy hour is an absolute steal with full-strength cocktails that don't disappoint. They can make all the classics, including an excellent Sazerac that would make Louisianans proud. Quiet and calm, it's a great place to go solo to cool down, or go with friends and play a round of pool. Top notch experience all around. read more

Impressive spirit wall in the main bar. Features lots of bourbon, whiskey, and scotch. The interior is stunning and feels very peaceful compared to the activity in the Red River entertainment district. If you are going for dram or measure expect to pay accordingly for the quality and age. They also have cocktails and a happy hour too. I also on another occasion went to the back bar near the outdoor patio area and they have a good selection of rums and tequilas too; some hard to find like Mauritian rum. There is even a dj that plays out in the patio area and there's an entrance to Las Perlas next door from the patio. Stunning downtown views from the patio. The only issue was that the band was really loud that we were all yelling and it got old after a while that I left. There weren't enough people for how loud the band was playing. We were in Austin and I found a cool whiskey bar downtown called Seven Grand. Well, it turns out that it's a chain (should have known) but their happy hour is reasonable. Where else can I get my favorite drink, a Gold Rush, for $7? Our bartender was blasting loud music when we walked in but quickly lowered the volume when he realized he had customers. My husband ordered a shot and a beer off of the HH menu and we enjoyed a very empty bar during HH. A few people dropped in to order from next door but they made their way back to the tequila bar. If you like whiskey or bourbon, this place is for you. The HH menu has some decent items on it and I enjoyed my drink. The restrooms were also clean which was nice too. I really enjoyed my experience at Seven Grand. The two male bartenders I interacted with were very knowledgeable and helpful. One was super friendly and told a story about every whiskey he recommended. All of his suggestions were spot on! The ambiance was enhanced for me by the pride flag hanging in the window. The taxidermy was funny to me, but very thematic. I didn't explore the bar so much as the whiskey selection. Definitely more of an experience than just a bar. read more

As you walk in, you instantly feel a speakeasy vibe with a classic wall of whiskey and bourbon. Hans was ready for any order you may have in mind, whether it be a choice neat or on the rocks, a happy hour favorite (HH 5-8 PM), or spirit cocktail. That's not it, folks. While one may think this is just a whiskey speakeasy, you walk down the shotgun bar to the back patio and to the left you will find yourself upon a Tiki Bar. Yes, you will feel the heat, but you will also feel like you stepped out of Texas and the Painkiller made by Oscar is perfect to match the need for a refresher. Still not it! My boss and I decided to take a stroll through downtown Austin on a Wednesday evening. Not a bad choice if you're looking for quick service since the night is young and its a Wednesday of course. We stumbled up Seven Grand on our way back to our hotel. This is bar is also attached to a tequila bar and they wrap around so its pretty cool if you have time to make your way through this bar setup. The inside looks like a man cave, dark and mysterious and relaxing. The bar is really long with plenty of barstool seating. There are pool tables as well. Our bartender was quick on her feet, attending to all the thirsty customers. I ordered an old fashioned and it was made just how I like it, growing hair on my chest and all. Strong yet sippable. First and foremost: this place is lowkey cool af if you want the vibes. Came in mid afternoon on a Sunday right after opening. Bartender was super chill, friendly and gave great service. Stumbled upon this place while visiting. Super cool find. This is the first whiskey bar I've been to, I loved the ambiance--felt very retro but still modern. Whiskeys from around the world are displayed floor to ceiling and surrounded by old hunting cabin decor, complete with a pool table and casual patio. The patio is cigar friendly, btw. The bartenders get slammed crafting cocktails for the crowd, but they'll get to you shortly and help you select the perfect libation to carry you through the night. Tip: there is (usually) a bar open out back. Live music plays most nights and a jukebox fills in the open timeslots. I came here on a friday night for a friend's birthday. I was surprised to see such a classy spot on the corner of dirty 6! A hidden gem for sure. There were pool tables and some seating. We love this whiskey bar! The bartenders are so sweet and nice. And the selection is great. We love to smoke cigars so they have a nice patio outside where you can smoke and enjoy your whiskey. They didn't have many cigars there so I recommend bringing your own cigars. Unfortunately, we were in the middle of a winter freeze when we were there so we didn't get to enjoy smoking cigars outside but will definitely be back to try it. They also have another bar connected to the patio which is really cool. There was live music on a Thursday evening, indoor and outdoor seating, and pool tables that seemed to be open to all patrons. Although with live music the tables surrounding the stage and even the bar were rather loud, there were still quiet tables around the edges and then of course outdoors.
