Met up with a friend for happy hour. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by the bartender, Kyle. He told me about the happy hour specials and also informed me that it was free pool night (on Mondays). I'm not a huge fan of whiskey, but I've found that whiskey bars tend to have amazing craft cocktails. I browsed the HH menu and noticed a Whiskey Sour. I actually like a Clarified Whiskey Sour and was curious to see how it compared. The Whiskey Sour wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as the Clarified Sour that I've had at Reserve 101 in Houston. Kyle told me they're working on some clarified cocktails. I also ordered a Boulevardier (which isn't on the HH menu). Kyle admitted that he had never made one. He quickly looked up the ingredients and made one for me and it wasn't bad! I've only had this cocktail one other time before so I didn't have much to compare it to, but I did enjoy it. They have a small cigar menu. Cigars can be smoked outside on the patio (which is shared with Las Perlas and Caña Rum Bar). I liked the laid back feel between the pool tables and the rustic decor (it felt like I was in a lodge). If you are a whiskey drinker, you will find a fine collection of bottles here. Or rather - you will find a very very fine collection of scotches here. There are some highly interesting bourbons as well. The selection of ryes is thin. If you read Whiskey Advocate (which I have been known to do), the rye curating will give you no thrills. The selection of Irish is thin as well - but no blame on that point. The population of upscale Irishes is just not that large, once you pass some over-rated cliches like Redbreast. * * * Seven Grand however is not an abstract name. That is how much you will pay in order to drink here. The prices for two ounces of many of those beverages will make the eyes pop out of your head sideways and go running out the front door. In more than a few cases, two drinks here will cost you close to what you would pay for a full bottle purchased at a liquor store. Now to be sure - bar drinking is expensive. That kind of percentage markup is not unheard of in the industry. But when you move up the price range for the raw material, The absolute amount of money you are overpaying to have that drink goes up astronomically. I will pay big for a peak experience I will remember for the rest of my life. (See my review of Craft Omakase.) I will not pay big for a random experiment with a bottle that could be wonderful and could be overrated. It is more economical to just buy the bottle. If the experiment works, I get a free month of legendary drinking. To my mind, bottle testing at Seven Grand just doesn't make sense. read more

Impressive spirit wall in the main bar. Features lots of bourbon, whiskey, and scotch. The interior is stunning and feels very peaceful compared to the activity in the Red River entertainment district. If you are going for dram or measure expect to pay accordingly for the quality and age. They also have cocktails and a happy hour too. I also on another occasion went to the back bar near the outdoor patio area and they have a good selection of rums and tequilas too; some hard to find like Mauritian rum. There is even a dj that plays out in the patio area and there's an entrance to Las Perlas next door from the patio. Stunning downtown views from the patio. We were in Austin and I found a cool whiskey bar downtown called Seven Grand. Well, it turns out that it's a chain (should have known) but their happy hour is reasonable. Where else can I get my favorite drink, a Gold Rush, for $7? Our bartender was blasting loud music when we walked in but quickly lowered the volume when he realized he had customers. My husband ordered a shot and a beer off of the HH menu and we enjoyed a very empty bar during HH. A few people dropped in to order from next door but they made their way back to the tequila bar. If you like whiskey or bourbon, this place is for you. The HH menu has some decent items on it and I enjoyed my drink. The restrooms were also clean which was nice too. I really enjoyed my experience at Seven Grand. The two male bartenders I interacted with were very knowledgeable and helpful. One was super friendly and told a story about every whiskey he recommended. All of his suggestions were spot on! The ambiance was enhanced for me by the pride flag hanging in the window. My boss and I decided to take a stroll through downtown Austin on a Wednesday evening. Not a bad choice if you're looking for quick service since the night is young and its a Wednesday of course. Whiskeys from around the world are displayed floor to ceiling and surrounded by old hunting cabin decor, complete with a pool table and casual patio. The patio is cigar friendly, btw. The bartenders get slammed crafting cocktails for the crowd, but they'll get to you shortly and help you select the perfect libation to carry you through the night. Tip: there is (usually) a bar open out back. Live music plays most nights and a jukebox fills in the open timeslots. We love this whiskey bar! The bartenders are so sweet and nice. And the selection is great. We love to smoke cigars so they have a nice patio outside where you can smoke and enjoy your whiskey. They didn't have many cigars there so I recommend bringing your own cigars. Unfortunately, we were in the middle of a winter freeze when we were there so we didn't get to enjoy smoking cigars outside but will definitely be back to try it. They also have another bar connected to the patio which is really cool. There was live music on a Thursday evening, indoor and outdoor seating, and pool tables that seemed to be open to all patrons. Went with a group of friends during an Austin weekend getaway around April 2021. My friend is really into Mezcales and some of us were really into whiskeys so Seven Grand was the perfect place to check out! The bar staff is very knowledgeable on their products and can even provide input based on what flavor profiles you're looking to taste and experience. We had a whiskey flight with Japanese options and boy was it amazing! Some were so rare that the business had a lengthy process in order to source some of the bottles. We also ordered some apps since we were having some serious drinks and they were fresh made, tasty and generously portioned (hello Texas!) I love Austin! From the entrance to the back patio, this is one amazing spot! The entrance is setup whereas on the left is Seven Grand on the right is Las Perlas (a mezcal bar). After having our ID, we headed to the left to see what Seven Grand had to offer. To my surprise, upon entering we encountered one of the longest bars I have ever seen. As for the bar, while they have other things, it was primarily stocked with whiskey. On the opposite side of the bar was seating (tables/chairs), a few pool tables along with an area where a small band was playing. We quickly found a spot at the bar where we placed our drink order before making our way to the seating area. In addition to the seating area, there are plenty of seats at the bar which seemed to be a very popular place to hang out. The bartenders were very knowledgeable and attentive; one friend was unsure what to order so they suggested a beverage, crafted and served it to her. She was super happy with the drink and ordered it a second time. After being inside for a while, a few of us made our way to the back patio which is very spacious. While we did not order anything, there is food available on the patio. The patio is shared with the Las Perlas (the mezcal bar) that is connected so we walked into it for a few minutes to check out the scene before returning to Seven Grand. Overall, Seven Grand is an interesting but fun spot. Based on appearance, it seems like it wants to be more of speakeasy as the lighting is low which goes well with all the dark wood throughout the space. The fact that it has pool tables gives it more of a bar feel. Either way, I am a fan as I had a great time and enjoyed several tasty adult beverages.
