My wife and I stopped here last night for dinner, after attending a Funeral in Quitman, Texas, and heading back home to Sealy, Texas. Both hungry and wanted a nice dinner, let me say, this was a wonderful find, chicken, and steak we ordered was delicious. The service too was amazing. Ambiance, we love these old buildings in our Texas towns, beautiful restaurants with some historical charm of the past. Made reservations here for Mother's Day. Was a bit nervous bc last year did the same at a place a few doors down and it was terrible. Pleasantly pleased with the service and the food. Decided to take a little drive about 45 mins north of Houston to the place we heard about on social media, Rail & Rye in Navasota, Texas. This little town definitely has a historic vibe, including this establishment. Rustic, but modern. We entered and were met by Chef James. The service was phenomenal from the start. My husband ordered a Maple Syrup & Blueberry Old fashioned. Now he is a self professed Old fashioned snob, and he gave it 5 stars! We ordered the burger & chicken fried chicken both were delicious. We swung by R&R while visiting Navasota, and were pleasantly surprised by the place. The restaurant is very sleek, modern, but relaxed as far as build out is concerned. They offer indoor dining on their first floor, as well as a rooftop bar area that we didn't check out due to high cold winds when we were there. They're also attached to a next door gift shop if you walk past the bathrooms in the back of the restaurant, in case you want to pick up some scented candles or tea towels. The menu offers a pretty well rounded assortment of choices. We ate there for lunch, so I've only got that for reference, but it seems like you can find something you like based on the options. They have weekly specials depending on the day you're dining, there's salads, sandwiches, burgers, shrimp & grits, blackened redfish, tacos, soups, and a 7 or so appetizers ranging from chicken wings to lamb lollipops. I had a big bowl of tomato basil soup and a grilled cheese, which was perfect for the cold windy day. Everything we ordered came out quick, was well portioned, and tasted great. Service was fine enough, not perfect, but definitely not anything to complain about, especially for a classy casual restaurant in Navasota, TX. If you find yourself hungry in Navasota, I'd highly recommend checking out Rail & Rye. I'm hopeful they stick around and similar offerings start popping up around it. I'm really disappointed we booked this restaurant for Valentine's Day and nowhere did they tell us it was going to be a preset menu. But what they did do was email us multiple times asking if we would like to spend $150 on roses... still don't understand how a florist got my email and pressed me about buying flowers. But the day of Valentine's Day we get there and it's $75 per person or $150 total for a split appetizer and 2 entrée and a split dessert. I'm very disappointed again because they did not tell us it was going to be a preset menu and it was going to be that expensive. Nor did the wait staff because we got conflicting answers both times when we asked the wait staff if it was per person or per couple. read more

Went here for valentines and was expecting the full menu based on what was seen online. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. There was a price fixed menu of two app options, four entrees, and two desserts.... $75 a person but the app and dessert were one per couple. The waitstaff provided conflicting information on whether the price was per couple or per person. Later they changed the verbiage to $75 per entree. Only one of those was truly worth (maybe) the $75- an 8oz filet with shrimp.... If you wanted lobster then it was $20 more. Overall I feel like we got extremely taken advantage of. I'm disappointed by the lack of communication by the restaurant. I'm disappointed in the service we received for what we paid. And I'm disappointed in the quality compared to what we paid. For the money.... Not worth it. Probably won't be back. read more

The ambiance of this restaurant is so cute! Went here for a late afternoon lunch and the service started off strong but slowly went down hill from there. The first drink came out within 5 minutes from the bar, we did not see the other 3 drinks for another 45 minutes... After that we ordered food a salad, burger, chicken sandwich and pasta and it took 1 HOUR for it to come out. The tables were not full and the food was NOT hot when we received it. Went for lunch today and had an amazing time. The atmosphere at Rail and Rye is really cool, fun and relaxing. The food was top notch. We had panko crusted goat cheese covered in a honey glaze which were out of this world and the BFG burger which was amazing. Chef Jimmy shared some fries covered in shredded parmesan, garlic, basil and olive oil and they were amazing. Suggested he needed to put on appetizer menu. We'd talked about driving from BCS to Rail and Rye in Navasota for some time. Meeting family from Houston for Father's Day dinner was the perfect occasion. Our only regret was not going sooner. The restaurant was fairly busy and there was a steady stream of folks going up to the rooftop bar. Still, Chef James found time to introduce himself and welcome us with a complementary dessert. The Shrimp and Grits were the best I've ever had. The flavor was amazing and there was not the puddle of grease that many others have. I sampled the Redfish and Chicken Fried Chicken. Both are on my shortlist for our next visit. The atmosphere was definitely on par with the delicious food. Take the 20 minute drive from BCS and don't leave without tasting Chef James's Bread Pudding. From the Redfish Pontchartrain to the Shrimp & Grits to his Bread Pudding, you'd think you're in New Orleans. What a gem. We'll be back soon. read more

Dropped by for an early dinner and it was the perfect time. Beautiful space includes and an upstairs and downstairs dining area. I sat indoors and enjoyed the Greek Salad with Grilled Salmon as my protein. To be honest, I was surprised at the portion and happy it was large and plenty to eat. The salad was colorful with freshly chopped bell peppers, olives, feta, and tomatoes. It was delightful! We had been wanting to visit R&R for quite a while, and a deferred birthday celebration proved to be the sufficient excuse. While the indoor dining room looked fine, we were wanting a meal at the rooftop bar, and early on a Friday night there were seats available. It's a great spot when the weather cooperates, and this night we also had a live guitarist/singer, who was excellent. As for the bar -- half of our party had the watermelon mojitos, which were excellent. The beer selection was surprisingly pedestrian given the vibe of R&R -- I would have expected at least one beer more local than Houston. As for the food -- I'd say it's a work in progress. R&R is definitely aspiring to be a level above in many areas, including the food. That said, with our meal, the presentation delivered, but the general response to the taste was -- OK. For example, my chicken fried chicken, described in some reviews as very crispy, was not at all crispy. Again, not bad -- just not quite what I would have expected. Garlicky mashed potatoes side met the mark. Service was friendly and good, and we love the overall work being done here -- just a cool spot. We'd come back, hoping the food takes a little step forward. And that rooftop bar is a great spot for drinks on a nice night. read more

Had a really good time here tonight for dinner. Kaeli was our waitress and she was super sweet and helped my fiancé find something that worked with his diet. The food was really good, my fiancé had the redfish and I had the seafood pasta. The chocolate cake was also worth the wait, so good! Cool vibe in the restaurant too. We were coming from visiting my grandma in Waco and passing through Navasota when we decided to try and grab a bite going back to Houston and saw this place pop up on google. This is such an unexpected place to find! The food is delicious, and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is very cool and chic in an industrial bar sort of way. Inside is nice, love that the old building structure was retained. Service was weird. Our waitress seemed in a massive hurry and frazzled, to the point where we were barely finishing ordering before she was running away. It was like 4:00 and they were not busy. For example, we had picked an appetizer that they didn't have, which was fine, and we were between two appetizers trying to make a decision and she sort of up and picked one for us while we were quickly trying to make a choice, and was off walking before we realized what happened. I can't convey in words the oddness of it all, we were served in a timely manner, but I wouldn't consider it good service - maybe an off day? Idk. There were also other servers just mulling about looking like they were pretending to be busy, which was also odd. All in all it was just okay. Nothing really exceptional, nothing fully terrible. Our group of 4 had appetizers and a drink at the bar. Lamb chops and goat cheese balls were very good. Service was A+ as well. Then we went to a table for dinner. Two of us ordered dinner salads with salmon. and we would give those an A+ as well. Two of us ordered gumbo with soft shell crab with a side grilled cheese. They were out of the crab, so we just had the gumbo. It was very good! Grilled cheese was good. Only negative was gumbo was served just luke warm and had to be sent back for a reheat. The wait staff did that pronto. Waitresses get a 5 star. They were polite and knowledgeable. We will definitely return. read more
