District Saigon (4/5)
With a few rainy days in the past week, I began craving pho. What can I say? I'm from Seattle, the land of pho and rain; I've been classically conditioned to associate the two! District Saigon had amazing ratings, and it was close to my house, so naturally, I had dinner here.
The restaurant itself has a very warm ambiance, which I found quite alluring. We were seated quickly, and the food and drinks came out quickly. We ordered a lychee soda, chicken wing and taro fries, round steak and brisket pho (with tendon and tripe), and spicy eggplants.
Food (3.5/5)
Lychee soda (4/5): Lychee soda was good. I think they made it by adding lychee juice or lychee syrup with club soda, but I think this would have been so much better if they added lemon/lime juice or used Sprite instead of club soda.
Chicken wing and taro fries (4.5/5): The chicken wing and taro fries were SO good. The chicken wing had a sweet, fish sauce-y glaze on it which contrasted so pleasantly with the crispiness of the skin and the succulence of the chicken. Though there were only 4 pieces (2 drumsticks and 2 wings), this really is a dish that must be tried here. The taro fries, on the other hand, were very average. I'm personally not a big fan of taro unless they're in sweet pastries. The texture is similar to a potato except that it's just a little "doughier." They brought this dish out with sriracha.
Round steak and brisket pho (2.5/5): Much like ramen, pho can be judged, principally, by the broth. While the toppings were all fine (I would have preferred much more cilantro than the 2 leaves they gave me), the broth was lackluster. Lacking the clarity of a good bone soup, the pho broth sought to hide behind the cheapest seasoning of all: MSG. Personally, I'm not even confident that they make the pho broth in house because it tastes similar to the instant pho broth packs that you can buy at Asian supermarkets.
Spicy eggplants (3/5): This dish should be renamed to "Zucchini and eggplant." It wasn't spicy at all, and the zucchini probably outnumbered the eggplant. Without the sharpness or spice or any herbs, the flavors in the dish melded together in murkiness. It wasn't exactly bad, but it could definitely be better.
Service (5/5)
At the end of the day, what saved District Saigon from a 3/5 rating was their stellar service. Both the bartender and the waiter were very attentive to our needs, which I thoroughly appreciate. There was always water in my cup, but the best part was their timing. They quickly brought out our appetizer (the chicken), and once we were done, they removed the dishes and brought out our entrees without much delay. There was no awkward waiting or disgruntled feelings about the service.
Altogether, even though I may have no had the greatest experience with the food (but you still have to try the Chicken wing and taro fries), their service is so good that I want to go back and give their food a second chance! read more
