I've had a couple services done here, and am very happy with the work they have done on my car. Their oil changes are done quickly and at half the price of competitors(~$30)! I do wish they were open a bit later, but for the price and service they offer, I'm more than happy to accommodate! Their waiting room is comfortable and cool, perfect on a humid summer day. Discount Auto is located just next to Venables on Clark. An easy walk up to Commercial where you can pass a few hours watching soccer, having a meal or just taking in the sights! Great service, fast, and +$50 cheaper than the other guys! Maz took my call earlier in the day and gave me a quote for having a full break flush on my 2006 Honda CR-V ($89). I inquired about how long the service would take as I was going to be stranded in East Van. I was told for sure by 4PM it would be done, but they'd see if they could get me done sooner. I hung out in the lobby, mask on, and was out of there in just over an hour! To top it all off, I was tired as fuck when I left and I ended up forgetting my backpack. I called to double check, and they said it was there any they would place it behind the counter for me till I stopped by to get it. Highly recommend! Simply the best mechanic I've ever had. Picked up a used car a couple months back that had been sitting in a driveway for a decade. Which means I had to do ten years of maintenance right away. First trip here was a lose windsheild wiper that I didn't have a socket wrench that could reach it. Maz (the owner) came out, fixed it up without any sort of wait and refused to take any payment. I had a list of work I needed done, for the first while I called multiple places to get a quote, and Maz was always the cheapest. Oil change. The quick and the cheapest in town. Transmission Fluid change. Again, quick and cheap! New tires. I couldn't believe the price. Cheaper then all the chains by a long shot. He noticed what had been causing the grinding while I drive while doing this and took care of that as well, cheaper then anyone else. Spark Plugs. Still cheaper then anyone I could find, and he knew I needed the car for the weekend and managed to get it done right away. Timing Belt. Cheaper then anyone I could find. During all of this, he never once tried to push a repair I didn't need. I even gave him an blank cheque when I asked him to take a look and see if there's any other repairs he could think of doing. Without hesitation he told me "nope, save your money". I worked with some mechanics in town who used to show off how they could milk money out of people who said that. Not Maz! Friendly, easy going and just plain great. Took what I thought might have been a lemon and fixed everything up perfect. read more

Happy to finally find a mechanic I can trust! After so many bad experiences with other auto-services I was happy to come across the discount auto repair. Service is very friendly and fast (if you come early). They stand behind their work, so if you are not happy just come back and they are happy to make adjustments. I had my clutch adjusted after they done some repair work simply because I preferred it lower and they did it right away at no extra charge. I've been taking my car here for a regular maintenance for some time and I thought I'm finally due to write them a review. I was looking for a place to do an oil change for cheap and had bought synthetic motor oil for my Scion XB. They quoted me $20 so I went for it. When my car was ready they told me that I needed new brake pads all around. I told them that it is about a year old and that Scion is a division of Toyota so how could that be? They still insisted on this and on the invoice they billed me $25. I was really concerned and decided to take it to my regular Japanese mechanic to check the brakes. He informed me that all the brakes are above 70% and showed it to me. I have replaced my own brakes in the past and there was a lot of pad remaining. I was relieved but pissed off at the same time. Please do not take your car to Discount Auto Repair they are not honest. On my invoice the mechanic also said my transmission leaks but the the front desk person probably thought that was too far fetched to tell me verbally. read more

Please do not take your car here. I was looking for an quick LOF change, they gave me my car back within a few minutes. My car started to fume inside and outside through the hood. When I opened the hood, I found a grocery plastic bag burning on top of my engine. I was pissed. I took my car to another mechanic and he told me that they had filled too much of oil and it had caused the engine gasket to leak with the pressure. So I had to replace that for $300. Discount Auto asked me to being my car back to them - I would never risk that again! read more

It is always difficult to find someone to trust your vehicle to and, despite one bad review here on Yelp, I was willing to give these guys a shot as their website was simple with easy-to-read service deals. I also appreciated their mission statement. (Of course anybody can write some words and not follow them up!). I also did a check on the Better Business Bureau website. There was 3 complaints there but 2 of them were addressed and the third was deemed to be addressed by Discount as far as possible by the BBB even though the customer was still not satisfied. For a business that has been around 15 years I was more assured that this would be a worthwhile bet. I made an appointment 2 days in advance with no problem. With so many service bays, they are able to take on work last minute but, as anyone would, they would appreciate booking an appointment in advance. I scheduled to have their "Super Service" package done. When I showed ip there for my 11am appointment they were friendly and let me know my car would be ready between 2 & 3pm. They asked me if I had any specific concerns with my car. I let them know the front brakes may need to be done but that I would be unable to afford it that day. I also let them know my headlights may need to be re-aligned (basically they had an easy opportunity to upsell me whether I needed these things or not). I came back to the shop at 2:15pm and just before 2:30pm the gentleman I'd been dealing with came out to go over the work that had been done as I braced myself for the bad news of what additional work that my car needed. The brakes and headlights were fine and my car would be ready to go in about 5 minutes. No bad news! I've been driving the car for a few days now with no issues. If this changes I will be sure to update this review but, as if now, I will be going back to Discount and even feel comfortable referring them to others. read more

Freaking love this place! In addition to their amazing knowledge and customer service there's Maz, the manager (and owner too I think), who's a super straight-up kind of person. He'll tell me when I'm wasting my money and when I'm investing it, etc. Everything is very fairly priced, quotes are bang-on (excludes tax), and they usually cut me deals wherever they can. They're great too if you're in a bind and they're booked up- they can often take your car in the morning-of or night before and find a spot to squeeze you in at some point in a day. Caveat Emptor! I have used this garage for a few repairs and oil changes without incident. This time I went for a simple oil change before going to air care the car. After the oil change I went straight to air care and passed. Next day, started the car and proceeded to fill the street with thick black smoke WTF???? We were heading out on a road trip so we thought maybe the car was just clearing something, but each time we cold started it, the same massive plume of black smoke. I checked the gauge and noticed that they had over-filled the car by 1.5 liters. We found a garage on the trip and had to pay $10.00 to have the excess oil siphoned out. We were told by this garage that the overfill could do serious damage to the car. I returned to Discount Auto to explain what happened and to see what they would do. They didn't apologize at all and only reluctantly offered to refund the $10 we paid to fix the problem at the other garage. When I asked for a full refund on the oil change they refused and sarcastically offered to put back the dirty oil and filter as their concession. You must kidding right??? This is the owner speaking now. When I explained that this was an absolutely terrible customer service exchange, and that they would loose a customer FOREVER over a $25.00 oil change, they just shrugged and refused to acknowledge that they put the whole car at risk and maintained their position that nothing would have happened to the car. A subsequent call to the Hyundai service department confirmed that it was indeed very harmful for the car and could blow out the whole engine seal and cause leaks at every hose junction due to excess pressure...which obviously, is very serious and would be very costly. Do you think Discount would have covered that damage? Me thinks not. A horrible experience all around. You might get an oil change here for a few bucks less than at your dealer, but you risk serious damage in the process. They take your money and smile nicely when all is fine but as soon as there is a problem they refuse to rectify it in a courteous manner. (They also missed a huge screw in one of the tires while the car was up on the hoist. You get what you pay for here that is for certain.) Not sure how they keep going with the attitudes they have. I went there for years because it is close to where I live and the oil change is the cheapest i've seen. Well, once you break my trust, I don't care if you give free oil changes, I won't leave my baby (my car) with you. Sadly, that is the case with Discount Auto. They told me I needed new brake pads. Upon inspection, the pads had 60% left on them! I had some clunk sounds coming from the side of the car also. So I left it there for them to inspect. An hour later after my oil change and so-called inspection, they told me that i needed new shocks ($1200). When I asked what happened, he said he's not sure and they didn't have time to fully inspect, but that's what I needed. WTF? It turned out that I just needed a stabilizer bar that was damaged ($200) - which I of course had repaired elsewhere! I foolishly allowed them to replace my balding tires. They told me that the super cheap Chinese made tires were "just as good" as top end tires. My frugal mind allowed them to convince me of this. 2 days later, i had the garbage tires removed and replaced by decent ones (Bridgestone). I understand that there is a market for cheap tires, but to tell your customer they are "just as good" is just downright irresponsible. It ended up being a complete waste of time on money for me. I should have known better, but they are supposed to be knowledgable, yeah right. As tempting as a cheap oil change is, I won't let my car near there again. It's just not worth it when you can't rely on them to have you and your car's best interest at heart. I would recommend spending a bit more at a trustworthy and competent repair shop. read more

Dishonest and bad service. Talked me into replacing my car's engine, which was quite costly, but it turned out that the problem had been the radiator (which I only found out because I got a second opinion from a different place). They did not manage to fix my car properly. They also kept changing their story when I asked about the origin of the replaced engine, etc. I will never ever go back to Discount Auto again. I took my car to Discount Auto about a month ago and I have to say they did a fabulous job, the guy phoned me and told me that my bill was going to be about $395.00 for everything. When I arrived to pick up my car he said the bill is less we actually found the parts for cheaper and your bill is now $326.00...wow this has never happened ever before if anything it is more than they quote. I had great experience with these folks. They repaired my Lexus 350 and saved me a couple hundred dollars over what the dealership quoted me. My car sounds and drives great, and I saved enough money to take my wife and her parents out for dinner ,Maz and his team were great, they balanced the air in my tires with out extra charges, and they did a safety inspection but found nothing to upsell me on ,! a nice surprise ! Beware this auto repair shop will rip you off. I had problems with my clutch, and brought my car there to get fix. After I picked up my car ,they said that they had change my transmision and everything is good. So after I got the car and paid, the problem was still there. I had to bring the car back to the shop and they said that they had to change another part and charge me again . There was nothing wrong with my transmision gear.They change the wrong on part. And they made it look like there was something wrong with it. Also the have cut off the wiring on my alarm the second time I pick up my car. So I did not go back there to get it fix. They do more damage to my car than fix it. The people they were rude. Only nice at first. I would rate this zero. read more

They wanted to charge $110 per strut for install(it requires removing 3 bolts in total) the usual quote from other shops was $60. The cheepest was $50. This place was the only one I found willing to rip people off this much. On top of that when he got a slight hint of a rusted/seized bolt,rather then heat it up and spray liquid wrench or PB blaster on it to loosen it up he's going to tell you that you also need to buy whatever part that bolt is connected to because he's too lazy or doesn't know how which translates to a higher price for you. In London there are many quality mechanics. This is not one of them. read more

Went there a couple of time for their cheap oil change. When I got my car back on the second time, the guy at the desk told me that I had a transmission fluid leak and that it was urgent. I found that weird since I never had an issue with the transmission and didn't spot any leak under the car. Brought for inspection to my trusted mechanic, nothing wrong with it. One week after, I drove to Banff from Vancouver and back. Two weeks after, to Tofino and back. Still going strong. Not very nice to try and get unnecessary work done to cash in... Took my car in to get winter tires put on -- while installing the mechanic phoned me to offer to replace the break pads as they were apparently 'worn down to nothing'. I have been going to Discount Auto for years and would recommend them to anyone. The service is great and the work is excellent. After paying the bill one time I asked them if they could change a tail light. I thought it would take a minute but it was all rusted out and it took the mechanic about a half an hour to fix it. They didn't charge for the extra work. You can't beat the price and I don't know how many times I've gone in expecting big problems with the car and they've informed me it was just small stuff. read more

I have gone to these guys for oil changes and putting winter tires on because they were cheap and local. I also work at a major manufactures auto retailer. I had two issues that I saw them for. I had them replace an alternator because I broke down close by. When putting on my winter tires they told me I needed brake pads struts and other work and that it wasn't safe to drive my car. Said they could give me a really good deal RIGHT NOW (with my car on the hoist with the wheels off) I phoned my mechanics and they told me to bring it in. They replaced the rotors for 100$ nothing else was wrong. When my alternator died after less than a year, they reluctantly replaced it under warranty, but wanted to charge me for idler pully and serpentine belt. They said if I didn't do the work I would void the warranty. I again had my mechanics check it out and they told me they were just trying to make some money. It happens ALL THE TIME in the car repair business, getting charged for work that is not needed or even getting charged for work that is not even done. My experience with Discount Auto Repair was entirely positive. The ABS warning light in our Mazda had come on, and other repair places had quoted my wife as much as $200 just to run the diagnostics. Discount Auto's quote was much lower, so I took it in on a Saturday morning. There was a bit of a wait, but the staff were incredibly polite and every explanation I heard them give to people during my time there was clear and commonsense. The repair for our car required a part to be ordered in, and I heard the guy at the desk call a few places to get the best price. The part was in by Monday, the repair itself took half an hour, and the total cost including diagnostics, parts and labour was less than $200.
