Food and services were amazing. Big D burger and beet salad with crab cakes awesome.

Lovely little spot in Hope. It has a covered outdoor space with heated fire pits. The menu has a variety of options, with fish, burgers, and salad. I had the crab cakes and they were amazing and packed with crab meat. The side salad was fresh and delicious. I appreciated the beer options, including non-alcoholic beers. Family-owned establishment with a lovely family taking care of patrons--excellent service.

We didn't know where to go for dinner tonight, but had been scouting camping locations. Hope came up in the discussion, and i said "Only if they have good eats" Well Dirty Skillet has 5 stars and it doesn't come better than that. We decided not to camp after all, but i still had my heart set on Dirty Skillet, so we drove down from Anchorage for dinner. Yes, i know it's 2 hours. It's still not as long as driving to Glenallen for 3 hours, to have Tok Thai for dinner, but I've done that too. And i have to admit, i am absolutely charmed by the Dirty Skillet. The sign at the roadside doesn't give much away, but you drive down into the parking lot of a widely spread out Lodge, and cabins, with the Dirty Skillet located across from the little pond. It's a beautiful location. The views when you sit outside are excellent, you can see the newly built log cabin store where espresso, gifts and ice cream can be bought, and the restrooms are also there. The outside seating is a good choice, as the large tables have tabletop firepits, which is very cosy. The tables can seat 8, and so sometimes, when there's a smaller party (like us 2) you may be sharing your table with someone else. Imagine having to converse with strangers? Well i am very much a fan of that. There were 2 Danish ladies on the table to the left of us, and we chatted with them, and later, a couple from Phoenix joined our table, we had some laughs with them, what a delight they were! I love when tourists come up here, and we can recommend places for them to go. There are also smaller tables without the firepits, and patio heaters for cooler weather. This is such a lovely place, very rustic and casual. Anyway, our server was prompt, and attentive, he brought water in a fancy carafe, and metal glasses, and took our orders. I got the Crab Cakes appetizer with rosemary fries, Blake got the Basic B Burger, with rosemary fries. We notices a corgi wandering around the tables, giving everyone the sad eyes. Please note, she doesn't like fries. The food came out pretty quickly, considering how busy the place was. My Crab Cakes were delicious, well packed with a lot of sweet crab and accompanied by a startlingly coloured gray sauce, which tasted divine. Blake was happy with his burger too. I was delighted with this place, and would have no hesitation coming back, even if it's a 2 hour drive, and the carb coma tends to hit you on the drive home. The whole package, view + service + food + ambience = a restaurant that's made it to my top 5. Thank you!

Ambiance, food, service, atmosphere, quality everything. We went in the middle of September and are still talking about it now two months later.

Everything was amazing. I'm so glad I made it a priority to visit Hope, especially to experience Dirty Skillet. One waitress took care of everybody. She was very welcoming, kind, and efficient. She checked on us just enough always keeping our drinks coming. I loved Dirty Skillets fire tables coupled with their string lights. Fucking vibes. I made sure to strategically come when live music started at 6pm. We had a front row seat. The Brewhouse Raspberry's were hittin' and everything we ordered was fire. We started with Dirty Skillets famous rice balls. They are not to be missed! After that came the Skillet Caesar salad with the literal best crab cakes. Yum! We looked up and seen 2 members of Anchorage's most popular news-station walk-in for dinner also. They were trying to be incognito but I am just too observant. I wasn't surprised to see them together bc I always point out to my husband how much they flirt on air. ANYWAY --- Our son wasn't feeling the best, and luckily we were staying in a cabin onsite. We ordered a few of the kids menu chicken strip meals to-go, and got them to him, before our dinner order was even up. We love convenience. For dinner entrees we ordered their yellow curry, kettle bottom steak, and Mac and cheese. Perfect perfect perfect. That's the review. Later on, after a visit to The Hope Hangout, we circled back for more beer and dessert! Same waitress, same amazing customer service, same live band. Smores pie? Perfect. Turnagain Mud homemade icecream? Wow. Mexican Chocolate homemade icecream? I can't. We tipped the live band (and waitress) of course, during both visits, bc they were awesome, and so are we :) Highly recommend.

Every single time we have out of state visitors we take them to Dirty Skillet and for an overnighter at the lodge. Absolutely perfect ever.single.time! We had my brother's wedding there as well and it was idyllic. You cannot go wrong with a stop at the Dirty Skillet!

I was so happy to find this place. It's not often you drive 32 miles out of your way just to grab dinner. I had wanted to check out Hope, AK and it happen to coincide with my hunger pains so it worked out great. With limited options in a small town, it's rare to find a place that ticks all the boxes: cool/kind staff, reasonable prices, good food and rad vibe. This hit them all. The burger was off the charts flavorful and the side of rosemary fries were a perfect combination of potato and rosemary. Loved the local beer selections too. If I was still hungry; I would had orders pie. I guess I'll have to come back! Thanks for a great experience.

Peanut Butter & Chocolate Pie and Turnagain Mud Ice Cream
    Michael D.

Starting with dessert because that was the best part... the Peanut Butter & Chocolate Pie and Turnagain Mud Ice Cream were phenomenal. The peanut butter pie was savory and had the consistency of Cool Whip so it was not too heavy and the chocolate crust and topping provided perfect sweetness. The Turnagain Mud Ice Cream was incredible. I still have no clue what the flavor notes were (maybe vanilla and a subtle cinnamon or caradmon?!?!) but it was just so, so good! I was tempted to order another scoop. The curried hummus was very smooth and creamy and full of flavor; it was thankfully not spicy. The salmon curry veggie and rice bowl was great as well and loaded with bamboo shoots (my husband loved them; I am less of a fan). Again, the curry is not spicy but provides a great punch of flavor. The lentil veggie soup was good, if a little thin and could have used more spices. The restaurant itself is super cute and feels like a real everyone is family dining experience with multiple parties seated at the same large outdoor tables. The service was friendly and efficient. Great spot!

The food was amazing! They have a fun style and a relaxed vibe. I liked the seasoning on the fries. The burger was awesome too. But I must say my favorite may have been the turnagain mud icecream !! Our servers were super sweet

WHAT A GEM THIS PLACE IS! This is the kind of spot you hope to just stumble upon on vacation. We had a long drive back to Anchorage and just wanted a snack. We got the fried rice balls, the caesar salad (minor quibble that I thought it was over-dressed), the skinny, skinny rosemary fries, and a few local AK beers. I wish I had enough room to try one of the burgers and/or the pie. They have a great ourdoor covered porch with fire features. Just fantastic. THE place to eat in Hope.

Everyone the table finished their entire meals before my son's cheeseburger was served and he finished his meal before my extra patty was served. My young children were getting impatient and my wife took them outside to play. At this point the first patty was cold and I was left to eat my overcooked burger by myself. My father-in-law came back inside as I was finishing up my uninspired meal and asked our server if he could get a separate bill for he and his wife. The chow fun noodles were undercooked. More like al dente pasta which does not work for a Chinese dish. The burgers came with fries that were cold and hard. They did fix that quickly and brought fresh fries which were much better. The wagyu burger was the biggest disappointment. The meat tasted very gamey. That is not what you expect from wagyu which should be rich and buttery. I ended up trying to cover the taste with toppings just to eat it. Not enjoyable. Our child did enjoy her grass fed beef burger and had no complaints. The atmosphere is great. Live music adds a nice touch. We also liked the shop next door and the outdoor wood fire. However this was my birthday dinner so I was particularly disappointed. I reserved a table for three in the whisky bar area. We arrived about five minutes early and were told by one of the hostesses that the party at the table just paid and should be leaving soon. About 20 minutes passed before another said the party still had not left even though one of them talked to the server. Eventually I agreed to have us seated in the main dining room. Almost immediately afterward I saw two parties leave the whisky bar so I asked to be moved there, which according to one of the hostesses is where we originally supposed to be. It was over 30 minutes later when we finally got the table I reserved. This left a sour taste in my mouth and I considered leaving at one point, but I was really looking forward to this dinner. For dinner I ordered the Komorebi Old Fashioned and the Dark Horse as I often do, We also shared the whisky pork buns and everything was delicious. Dessert was not as enjoyable. I ordered their espresso martini, the Electric Stolt, which was decent enough. Lacking on the coffee flavor in my opinion. I also ordered the chocolate birthday cake which, aside from the cherries in the cake, tasted like any generic cake you would get from a grocery store. Their other desserts, like the matcha panna cotta and goma silk bar, are much more flavorable. Service overall was fine, but we got the check before my boyfriend could order another drink so we felt somewhat rushed out. Considering this is the only time I've had issues with being seated for reservations, I would go back, but this was my least pleasant dining experience here, unfortunately.

Spectacular scenery is everywhere, so don't expect the view alone to justify the cost. Our dinner was one of the biggest disappointments of our entire trip. We were celebrating our friends' 30th wedding anniversary, making the evening especially meaningful. Our bill was over $1,700 for our group, and not one person at our table said they even liked their meal. Several dishes were barely edible. My scallop soup contained one scallop that was not fully cooked and a tiny piece of cracker. The gazpacho was overwhelmingly spicy. The beet salad was served over scattered drops of horseradish that weren't even applied consistently from one plate to another, making the dish feel careless and unbalanced. The main courses were average at best. Some people didn't even finish their filet mignon, which should be one of the easiest dishes for a restaurant of this caliber to get right. The desserts were just as disappointing. No one finished theirs, and no one had anything positive to say about them. The service was equally unacceptable. Before dinner even began, one of our friends quietly asked the waiter if he could please bring a candle with the anniversary dessert to help celebrate the couple's 30th wedding anniversary. It was the very first request made after we were seated, yet it was completely overlooked. The desserts arrived with no candle, no acknowledgment of the occasion, and no apology. It may seem like a small detail, but it reflected the lack of attentiveness we experienced throughout the evening. Our waiter repeatedly reached across guests instead of serving properly, refused to clear plates himself because he wanted the bus staff to do it, and the overall service felt slow, awkward, and very unprofessional. Even though the restaurant wasn't busy, every part of the meal seemed to take far longer than it should have. What really confirmed that it wasn't just us was talking to the family seated next to us--a group of 14--who felt exactly the same way about both the food and the service. I consider myself a true foodie. I love trying new restaurants and cuisines, and I'm far from being a picky eater. I almost never write negative reviews, but this experience was simply unacceptable. I had heard this restaurant was a "must-do" while visiting the area, which made the experience even more disappointing. In my opinion, it's simply not worth the money. I wouldn't even recommend paying to ride the tram just to dine here, because you'll find breathtaking scenery all over Alaska without spending hundreds of dollars on a meal that falls far short of expectations. I sincerely hope this review helps other travelers avoid making the same very expensive mistake we did.

Brown Bear Saloon and Hotel is a rustic and cozy wooden lodge situated right off Seward Highway. It specifically sits 25 miles south of downtown Anchorage and 100 miles north of the town of Seward. In fact, the address for Brown Bear states that it's situated in the town of Indian, Alaska. I've never heard of Indian, AK...but basically if you need a place to stay in and around Seward Highway, this Brown Bear Lodge is accommodative. What was even more terrific about staying here was that the location felt far away from the hustle and bustle of Anchorage. The hotel views look out upon the scenic Turnagain Arm waters with the snow-capped Kenai mountains standing tall in the distance. Even though Brown Bear is located right off a very busy section of Seward Highway, I genuinely felt like I was staying in the heart of nature. And btw...when I did visit and spend the night here, unfortunately there was a lot of construction going on beside the highway. So here it is, Brown Bear Saloon and Lodge...a prime spot for those getting ready to start and or continue their Seward Highway journeys. Well, one thing...when I woke up in the morning, I actually had to backtrack a little up north on Seward Highway for about 15 miles. Yeah so, I take that back, the lodge isn't really the start of Seward Highway. But I traveled back north for 15 miles to the Potter Marsh Boardwalk where I explored for a little before returning back on Seward Highway for the 115-mile trek south. Basically...this Brown Bear Lodge and Saloon was much better than grabbing some random hotel in downtown Anchorage. It had personality and charm. What was surprisingly amazing about my stay was the price! Throughout my 3-week voyage around Alaska, Brown Bear had the cheapest rate by far! It was $67 (with taxes and fees included) for a room I had on the 2nd floor just above the restaurant. I mean, $67...can it get any cheaper for a place to stay right along iconic Seward Highway at the start of summer travel season? Lol, I don't think so. Although my room would be standard for most tourists...for me it really stood out with a lot of great amenities. It had a walk-in glass door shower (not just a tub with a curtain), very comfortable towels to dry off afterwards. And here me...I don't think I'd ever recall thinking about towels making a difference during my stay, but they really were fluffy and comfortable. Lol, maybe they were brand new? The room also had a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee pot, good sink area and a giant mirror with good lighting. Btw...I checked-in, inside the restaurant. Then I was given a key and shown the stairway to the 2nd floor. Too bad I had already eaten in Anchorage prior to arriving here because the restaurant looked very interesting...like a casual blue-collar spot to grab a good old-fashioned burger and fries...or simply just your typical all-American type of fair. Point is...the restaurant appeared accommodating for those spending the night as you can just have a hearty meal and then return to your room. Some extras about the restaurant...it resembled a bar/pub with a colorfully fun atmosphere. They had high top tables and chairs...a huge selections of beers on-tap. I believe I saw a billiards table to play and plenty of televisions to watch sports. I'd recommend eating here if you didn't catch a bite back in Anchorage. Overall, I'm happy I discovered Brown Bear Saloon and Hotel. I found it on Priceline. I couldn't have asked for a better one-night stay after all the traveling I had done prior to arriving here. This place is definitely emblematic of your off the beaten path motel/lodge sitting right in the cross section for traveling to all parts of southern Alaska.

Well we stopped by after being told the burgers were a hit. To my surprise my double cheeseburger…read moreshowed up completely burned to char absolute death. The worst burger I have had in years. Maybe this was a one off and I would happily concede that maybe just an off order but seriously giving someone a burger order so burned is ridiculous. Do better!
