Do NOT come here for grooming. And, if you do, avoid Wxxxxxx. (Name intentionally redacted.) ------- I didn't want to write this review. I didn't want to write this review because Rosemary was so kind by taking my dog in for a next-day grooming appointment. It was clear she was happy to welcome a new customer, and I was grateful and in need. But the problem is Wxxxxxx. I'm angry at myself because I KNEW, two seconds after meeting the groomer -- with the I-just-got-out-of-bed hair, and horrible bedside manner -- I KNEW this groomer wasn't going to do a good job. Wxxxxxx had ZERO pleasantness about him when we met. No cordial greeting. No "Hi, little doggie!" He was like an emotionless teen flipping burgers unwillingly at a fast-food joint. As soon as I walked in the door, he grabbed my dog's leash like it was the next thing on the assembly line; I felt like he was just performing a task, not caring about giving a good experience. I tried to strike up a conversation and dive into expectations. He seemed like he could not care less. He had a vibe of "I know what to do, and I'm gonna do it like I do it." (Me: Don't you want to TALK to me to learn more about this picture of how I want her cut? No? I guess you know my type of dog, huh?) But, I internally scolded myself for judging a book by it's cover. I talked myself out of my gut feelings, knowing that pre-judging people is wrong. When I got my dog back, I realized I should have listened to my instincts. That man has no business doing anything with a dog other than petting them. (Because he clearly has not mastered the art of grooming to where he should be paid for it.) My poor sheepadoodle was returned severely uneven and misshapen. I've never groomed a dog before, but I'm willing to wager that on my first try I could have fared better. There were huge CHUNKS of uneven fur cut down to the skin (see rear leg pics and,) and other areas where it's clear that the groomer did not know how to cut evenly. (Look at the jawline and neck pics.) And, although I paid for a full groom, it didn't appear that they cut any hair from the ears, paws, or underbelly at ALL. Not only was I paying for a horrible cut, I was paying for an INCOMPLETE job. (Note that they make you pay before they bring your dog out, so you don't see the final result until after you pay.) When I was given a chance to inspect the cut, I restrained myelf, partly because both Wxxxxxx and Rosemary were presenting my dog to me and bracing for me to explode, and partly because I didn't want to cause a scene in front of Wxxxxxx. (What if Wxxxxxx has special needs or this was his first day and this represented his best work?) I initially opted to just let it go, and left. I was wrong for that. But as I was driving home, (and after my wife saw the huge chunks of exposed skin and uneven hairline,) I had to call back and ask Rosemary for a redo. To their credit, they gladly took my dog back and schedule me with a different groomer the next day. I brought my dog back the next day and a different groomer tried to fix the mess Wxxxxxx made. The day after THAT, I noticed the scars from blade scrapes on my dogs belly. (see pics.) That's when I realized I wouldn't return to Dirty Dog. I didn't want to write this review. Dirty Dog is a local business, and I prefer to support local businesses, especially those who seem to have kind owner/operators (like Rosemary) who are trying to be involved in their community and serve others through their work. And, I suppose I should have known better than to seek grooming at a place that is primarily known for offering self-washing services. Lesson learned on my part. But it's important that Dirty Dog knows (and comes to terms with the reality) that Wxxxxxx is not only bad for business, he is dangerously close to causing injury to an animal. I'm sure he's a good person overall, and probably does lots of things well -- But grooming dogs is not one of them. Dirty Dog would be well-served to find another way he can serve without being near animals with sharp objects. read more

Went in for walk in nail trim, I get that they have appointments but you shouldn't agree to cut and file when the receptionist came around the desk, made you hold your own dog while you only filed and didn't cut in the middle of the reception area where there were 6 other dogs being self washed. It was hot and humid, my dog was freaking out and the person (not sure if she was a groomer) came in with the filer and only pet my dog once while yanking his paw. We only did two feet before I stopped it. His normal groomer is done in less than five min. I was there longer and was scratched in the mean time. Does my dog love getting his nails done? No. But there is a level of professionalism and for 23 dollars to not even be moved from the spaced I walked in, let alone someone who doesn't seem to know dogs, I would not trust this place behind closed doors. read more

I took our bernedoodle male, "Roux" in for a shampoo and a complete trim. The technicians and manager were delightful and 3 hours later I came back to a totally transformed dog after a superlative shampoo and trim. The technician really accented the dogs face well , trimming the ears and merging slightly longer fur on the legs with a closer cut on the body. The tail feathers were trimmed back and the dog can see again after the facial trim. He looks really, really good. The service was about 25% less than his last service at Scent Hound on Wm Cannon and it was really worth it to take him over to South Lamar and Dirty Dog. I Do recommend this service. In the past, Ive done their do it yourself shampoo and cut and frankly, its very much worth it to get a professional to do the wash and cut. I went here because I wanted to get rid of my dog's blowout shedding. I booked an appointment with the groomers to get her deshedded, normal bathing stuff, and her nails done. After I picked her up, I brushed her fur with my hand and there was a large amount of shedding. I tried in a different place and even more. I asked the front if they even did the deshedding process and she said yes and when I showed her the hair, she wrote a note to have the groomer to call me the following morning. When I got my dog in the car, I noticed an awful smell and I realized it was whatever they put on her. It was so bad that later that evening, I had to give her another bath just to try to get rid of it. I never received a call back and when I tried to call them to discuss it, I was told I'd have to wait for a groomer. We LOVE Dirty Dog! The groomers here are excellent, I am so sad to see a few negative reviews here in a row, because that hasn't been my experience over the past 2 years since coming here. I have had different groomers each time, and everything worked out swell! We have very difficult and particular grooming needs for our large breed Bernese Mountain Dog and our Great Pyrenees - every time I take them in I communicate exactly what I want to have done/styled - and my dogs have are returned in show dog shape! Grooming our dogs are TOUGH - double undercoats, whitening needs, specific fur fade trimming needs around the haunches/chest/ears/tail, paws that need fur to land in Clydesdale splayed fashion, nails that are difficult to trim - especially with a Great Pyrenees' double dew claws. Every time, my dogs have come back in excellent shape with happy attitudes! My husband is always impressed with their grooming too, we love Dirty Dog. This place has no attitude or frills, but they know their grooming stuff. Very kind staff and excellent communication booking and coming into and out of appointments via text and email. read more

2 times now I've been turned down by this place. The first time I semi understand it was like 7 minutes to closing, place still has a few self grooming their dogs. Told me no too late. Umm takes all of 10 minutes to wash my dog. Second time was today, I had a boarding place fall through and asked about boarding, my dog is fully vaccinated, super awesome and has been boarded a few times. He's 4. Friendly as all hell, the girl said they needed to interview my dog because no one is there at night to be with them, There is at least 5 places on S, Lamar to board my dog including his animal hospital Bluebonnet. Horrible service. Sadly, I used to love this place! My original groomer is amazing, don't get me wrong, but due to circumstances I landed with a new groomer. To start; my original groomer had a family emergency so they had rescheduled me last minute (which is totally fine). I was forced to come in on a weekday, which can be difficult if you work during normal business hours. I informed the groomer I could not pick my dog up at the specific time she gave me - only before. I pick up my dog and go home to find out ALL of his nails were cut incredibly short, bleeding, and cracked. As a dog groomer, you should know the proper length... because I too cut my dogs nails. No one mentioned to me he was bleeding when I had picked up my dog. Alarmed, I call and I was told that my dog wasn't bleeding when he was there. I received no apology, just snide attitude and a chuckle. After demanding to have a manager call me, to sort this out... well, a manager never called. The groomer called and stated my dog chewed on his nails maybe (?) and she'd give him bath for free. O, you're too too kind. Not to mention she kept reminding me she did me a favor by not charging me express service. Keep in mind my appointment was changed last minute by the company, not myself. The point of the matter is we as dog owners put our fluffy loved ones in your hands to be treated with care, not mistreated. I am very disappointed with my experience with Dirty Dog on South Lamar. I went on a 4 day trip to visit family during Thanksgiving weekend. Before I left for my trip, I stopped into Dirty Dog to check out the facility, talk to staff, and take my dog for the evaluation. The evaluation went great and I was told that my dog was welcome to return any time. I made sure to let the staff know that my dog has some issues with anxiety and may not eat and was assured by the staff that they were completely capable of handling any issues that may arise. They told me that they would add chicken stock and/or other high value treats to her food to encourage her to eat and I felt like I was leaving my dog in good hands. Since my initial experience was really nice, I decided to board her there during my trip. Per their intake paperwork, I left contact information for not one, two, or three - but four emergency contacts who would readily have picked my dog up if anything was going awry. I signed the paperwork, of which I strongly encourage you to read the fine print, and departed for my trip. I assumed that everything was going just fine because none of my emergency contacts, nor myself received a phone call over the holiday weekend. I came back to Dirty Dog to be informed that my dog was no longer welcome at their establishment. When they brought her out to me she was noticeably thinner which is quite a big deal because she is naturally petit as she was the runt of the litter. They returned half of the food I had left for her, meaning that she was likely eating less than half of her daily meals. This is why I'm so upset...If things were so bad that she isn't allowed to return, why weren't they bad enough for the staff to call me so that I could ask one of my emergency contacts to go get her? At what point does Dirty Dog call owners? What constitutes an emergency in their practices? Their kennels are just 4 wooden walls with no windows which have the potential to be highly stressful for dogs. In my dog's case, it was an incredibly stressful situation and she scratched up the wood in an effort to escape. Why wouldn't they move her into a wire kennel where the danger of splinters or ingesting wood would be a non issue? The last thing that irritated me was that I picked her up after noon and was charged full-price for a half-day of daycare which was not made clear in the paperwork, is not listed on their website (believe me, I checked), and was not told to me before I left. I spoke to the manager and was informed that the half-day fee for late checkout is in the aforementioned fine print in their boarding paperwork. The fee was eventually waived after I complained, but it wasn't waived due to their negligence while caring for my dog, it was waived because I complained and they lost my paperwork. Even if my dog hadn't been banned, I would never take my dog back to Dirty Dog and I encourage you to avoid giving them your business. read more

We took our Shih tzu puppy for grooming. This was his second visit. When we picked him up after grooming, we saw scratches/wounds due to grooming trimmer on his belly. When asked about it they told us, he already had those scratches before grooming, which was totally false. My dog seems to be licking his wounds a lot. I originally started looking at Dirty Dog because Graham desperately needed a nail trim. John bathes Graham weekly at home, so we didn't really need to use the self-service bath stuff... but then John didn't give Graham a bath for a few weeks and Graham went on swimming and Yard Bar adventures and he turned into one super stinky dog. Like I could smell him across the living room stinky. Gross. Then, after a particularly dusty trip to Pedernales Falls, and the fact that he stunk to high heaven in the first place, we decided to take Graham here on a Sunday afternoon and bathe him and get his nails trimmed. They have steps you can use to get your dog into the tub, but my dog is a stubborn little butt and didn't want to use them, so we just picked him up and put him in the tub. They have leashes you use in the tub to keep your dog from jumping out. Graham promptly began pulling on the leash because he is a stubborn little butt and he doesn't particularly like bath time. Well, too bad, stinky dog. Dirty Dog has everything you could want to use to clean your dog - shampoo, ear wash, brushes, an easy to use hose for water, forced air dryer, and even doggy cologne! We scrubbed every inch of Graham's body, rinsed all the dirt, grime, and extra hair off, and then brushed him some more. (I have dog hair tumbleweeds in my house, no matter how much I vacuum. I need all the help I can get with tackling shedding dog hair.) After I felt he was sufficiently deshedded, we got his nails trimmed. The nice girl working the counter did that for us while we held Graham still. The bath and the nail trim set us back $32. (The bath was $16, the nail trim was $14.) They charge you for the self-service options by your dog's weight, but it's still pretty cheap, especially considering how much stuff there is for you to use on your dog. I felt it was worth it, given the stinkiness of our pup. (Added bonus - now I don't have to clean out the bathtub in the guest bathroom!) The doggy cologne even smells pretty good, and Graham still smells good today. (That dog really likes to get stinky, so I consider this a definite win.) Oh! For any of you grooming-savvy peeps out there, you can use Zoom Grooms here! (For those not in the know, they are only the best brushes ever.) I was really excited when I saw that and it makes all the difference when bathing and brushing out your dog. I still used a regular metal brush on Graham, but the Zoom Groom did a whole lot of work for me during bath time. This won't be an all the time service for us, since we do bathe Graham regularly at our own house, but for those times when he is particularly nasty, his stinky butt is going to Dirty Dog. read more

Never again will I waste good money here. I dropped off my dog at 9:30am & was told I would hear from them around 1pm. By 2pm, I called and was told they were really busy and she wouldn't be ready for a another few hours. I then get a text 25 minutes later saying to pick her up. Get there, pay (with a 25% tip) without seeing her & took her straight to the car bc frankly there was nowhere to actually inspect her. Got her home & her coat was completely choppy & uneven, she still had matted fur under her ear, she didn't even smell like she'd been bathed, and she was acting really lethargic. I called to discuss everything & inquire why she would be acting so off but got VM & nobody bothered to return my calls. Why would they? They got their $ for a crummy job. My guess is that in the 25 minutes between my call & their text, someone rushed with clippers & didn't bother with the full grooming I paid for. Groomer friends of mine from another state were appalled at the photos I posted online. Guess I'm going to have to wait for it to grow out some & then shell out more $ to have it fixed. We are visiting and we spent a lot of time outside and I was dreading going home and giving my dog a bath in the tub. I booked a grooming appt for 8:30 and due to traffic I was 12 min late. GPS can prove that. Yet they refused to take my dog because I was late. Their policy, clearly written on the wall and pointed out to me was 15 min grace period. May have seemed I was later than 12 min since I had to ring the bell for service multiple times and finally hunt them down in the back to tell them I was here. That has happened to me multiple times at this location because they can't hear who comes in even with a bell. I'm done and will not return due to the schedule nightmare this caused me today. They shouldn't over book themselves if a ten minute delay throws off their entire day. They threw off my entire day also. Poor customer service if you ask me. read more

To be completely honest, I am a lazy Yelper. I rarely feel compelled to write a review for anything other than restaurants, but will gladly share my experience in this situation. I have a Portuguese Water Dog/Mini Poodle mix, meaning my little guy's hair likes to get pretty matted. Although I love his dirty/shaggy look, there comes a point when you have to clean it up a bit and take some weight off for the summer. I came in with a very specific look in mind and they knew exactly what I was going for. They are extremely patient and flexible, even switching around groomers when my pup decided to have an irrational fear of the original groomer's beard (Yes. Weird, I know). They were able to leave the hair just over an inch and a half long (as requested) and didn't even charge extra to brush out a particularly matted spot. They were also able to remove most of the tear and food stains from his face, which every dog owner knows is not an easy task. This is hands down the best 'do he's ever had! My ex-boyfriend and I used to stop in here all the time on our way home from the dog park! There was always a tub free and we got right in on Sunday afternoons/early evenings! The reception girl is always very friendly on the way in and out and they give you everything you need to thoroughly clean your dog. There is always plenty of towels for you to use and each station is always stocked nicely! I love the self wash because you can always maintenance in between professional grooming or after a day of your dog rolling in the mud at the dog park! Pricing wise I thought it was a little expensive and they base it on your dogs weight! I would never take my 120 pound yellow lab there because it would probably be a fortune but, his dog was only like 35 pounds. I tried the Mesa location about 4 years ago. The groomer definitely had no training. Worst cut of all time. Four years forward to now when I thought I would try them again. I was told the cut would be $65, but when I went to pick up my dog, price was now $82. They said my dog weighed more than 25 pounds. I had just been to the vet who weighed her at 24 pounds. When I challenged them, they then said the $65 was an estimate by someone who answers the phone and didn't know the real prices. I told them, "that's not my concern." In short, I compromised and split the difference. The cut was mediocre. I would NOT recommend this company until they get their team in line and understand quotes are quotes. read more

Mark does a wonderful job on my doodles. He takes the time to brush them out when I want their hair shaggy. This photo shows the summer cut he just did on my blonde- not at all scalped and left the head shaggy per my request. I've used Mark the past 4 groomings and have been so pleased every time. The second photo shows the crazy hair he takes the time to brush through- still doing a hygiene cut and cleaning ears. We were in town for a birthday trip and we brought our Australian Cattle Dog with us. We had a great time at "Barking Springs" but our dog was dirty from the mud and other dogs so we decided to see if we could bathe her before getting back to our hotel. It was around 5:30 and every place was either closed or they said they closed at 6 and it was too late. Not at Dirty Dog! They welcomed us, never rushed us and we were so grateful! The wash was very clean and smelled great! None of the odors you'd expect. They provide a step ladder for the dog to easily access the tub, along with a collar so the dog doesn't jump out. There's towels, shampoo, ear wash, a scrubber, and cologne. We were in and done in 20 min and total cost was $10! They are located downtown and if there isn't street parking available you can park in the garage connected to the shops. You can access the dogwash back entrance from the parking area. read more

From reviews seemed they had a hard time getting new location up to speed but it's working great now. always friendly on the phone, organized, they treat my Jasper very well. He's had two great haircuts there (not naming stylist as she'll get too busy, sorry) plus stayed for boarding during the day. You NEVER know what you're going to get. Sometimes, upon picking my dog up, he's well groomed. Sometimes they've shaved his entire body, including the top of his head, which looks quite odd on a furry dog, and most importantly, do not let a guy named Jackie groom your dog. Twice, he shaved my dog so close she had to be taken to the Veterinarian for skin burn meds. I spent $96 on grooming and $204 for a Veterinarian visit and meds to apply for two weeks. If you aren't picky and just want your dog bathed, nails trimmed, and clipped, any of the female groomers are capable of getting your dog back to you in better condition than when you left them.
