I no longer go to Dimassi's, because the food quality has gone way down, and the prices have gone way up! If you come in on a weekend, you'll actually pay even more! Last time I was in, the (canned?) dolmas tasted like medicine, the hummus was as thick as spackling paste from way too much tahini, and the tabouli was mostly parsley, with hardly any bulgur. The charred veggies were charred, yeah, but still raw. Terrible! I had a little rice and some salad. Only cost about $16! I will check this place out, again, if I'm in the area, in another six months. Sometimes, a change of staff will save a place. Until then, I'll cook the same dishes I got there, myself, and, at that, mine have always been better, but, occasionally it's nice to dine out, IF the food is actually good! read more

They even had some of the slightly toasted gyro meat I like. We got there early on a Sunday so the presentation was perfect and beautiful. Having fought my way through the food lines at the Golden Corral, this was such a welcome change. I started with the chicken kabob and stuffed grape leaves. I have nevr had better stuffed grape leaves. Though they used chick peas instead of lamb they were a cold savory delight that left nothing wanting . The Kabob was cooked to perfection nether dry nor under cooked. I had a peice of Baklava and a jam cookie with my coffee , augmenting my coffee with a spash of rose water. It was a transendent heaven.The grilled or roasted egg plant was surprisingly good and flavorfull as well and I was very happy I opted to taste both the lentil soup and the yellow curried vegitable soup. I am neither vegitatian or anti red meat but these selections were a marvel and I had to stop at some point for lack of room. Nothing was badly prepared and as it was self service I can attest that too was excellent. I am just sorry I never got to the tamarind beverage as I adore it but thought coffee with rose water would accompany my desert sellection better. This is a flavor pallet I adore but have yet to master at home so I thank the stars Dimassi's has not only mastered the cooking style of the Midle East but makes it available to me for Sunday Brunch or any other of the 6 days they are open. read more

i like going here. it is fast style buffet. good things: humus, yogart/cucumber sauce, great rice, really great gyro meat, salads, and great fountain soda. their coke zero is really great. bad things: dried out chicken fry and broiled. seems like they are days old. uninspired other cooked food. once in a while i try them against my better judgement. 99% of the time, spit it back out. life is too short for dried out chicken. go there to make great gyro/doner with good salad and sauce. stay away from the rest. read more

Buffet items you must try: Rice, Mustard Chicken, Falafel, Stuffed Squash, Lamb (when available) and most def the hummus. I want that recipe!! They have reopened! We drove by 7/4/11 and saw the "Grand Opening" sign. We walked in - sure enough they have the same setup. I'm not sure why so many people gave this place bad reviews. I've been going to this place for a long time - even their Houston locations. I've been to several Mediterranean places and it's a great place to eat. They have great fall-off-the-bone Lamb Shanks, Beef Kefta, Mustard Chicken Cubes (the proper name escapes me), Couscous, Cucumber Salad, Rice and all types of veggies - including Baba ghanoush. I was visiting some friends in Austin, they had never tried Middle Eastern food, so I thought that Dimassi's would give them a wide variety of choices. I've been to the Dimassi's in The Woodlands (pretty good) and in San Antonio (so-so) but his one topped them both. Now, I realize that buffets can vary day to day (some, hour to hour) so your experience depends on the luck of the draw. But I've heard that this restaurant remains pretty consistent. When it comes to Middle Eastern food, I'm a grazer--a little bit of this, a little bit of that on the first plate. Then eat, find the favorites, then head back for more of those. I tried literally every dish but some stood out. Hummus and Baba Ghanouge are among my favorites and these didn't disappoint. Many times, when made in the quantity that's available, the flavors are dull and the consistency either slimy or pasty. I'm happy to say, this was not the case. And what goes better with that than pita? It's fresh, baked in a proper brick deck oven; not wood-burning as in the East, but it does a great job nonetheless. The dolmas are very good, the rice was properly seasoned and not tough or slimy, as I've had it in some restaurants. Falafels--Lord, I love those little devils!!! These were great; as I was at the buffet, they came out, hot and fresh. I made a beeline for them and was rewarded with proper spicing and texture. As for the vegetables, the eggplant cooked with pomegranate molasses was excellent. As simple as it sounds, it's a difficult dish to pull off correctly but Dimassi's did an excellent job. Warning: it's somewhat of an acquired taste but be daring and at least try one piece. The grilled veggies were also above average; just tender enough without falling apart and for a buffet, that's quite a feat. And try the fried cauliflower, even if, like me, you don't care for it--this will change your mind. Among the meats, the shredded beef stood out--sort of like an old fashioned pot roast, juicy and succulent but with Middle Eastern spices. There was mustard chicken; a surprise, as the mustard flavor is very mild yet totally makes the dish. The kafta kabobs were spot on flavor-wise; however, they were a little dry but not so much as to affect the overall restaurant rating. But for me, the star of the show was the gyros. They were fresh from the kitchen; had they been sitting awhile they would have perhaps dried a bit. The amount I ate should make me hang my head in shame. But I ate 'em, I'm glad it did and I'd do it again--so there! Desserts and drinks range from the familiar to the somewhat exotic. And everything, including the drinks, is self-service. Busing the tables takes place at regular intervals, so your empty plates won't take of valuable eating room. I'll definitely come back and if my impression changes, I'll update my review. But for now, I'm stuffed and I'm happy--for this ol' boy, it doesn't get much better than that. read more

This is possibly the BEST buffet in Austin. The fact that it is a Mediterranean buffet (specializing in Lebanese dishes) is truly unique too. I have been coming here for several years now and each time the food has been amazing! It's always so fresh and the sides and entrees are kept nice and hot, plus they continuously bake pita bread right out of a brick oven. Most times you can snag some while it's still steaming. The staff is very polite and always greet us upon entering, the décor and music is on point and the restaurant is kept clean. My favorite item on the menu has to be the VEGETABLE CURRY SOUP. It's amazing! Try it poured over some rice with vermicelli in a soup cup. Other delicious staples include: Greek salad, tabouli, avocado hummus, garlic sauce, falafel, chicken kebobs, gyro meat, Mediterranean rice with almond slivers, lamb shank, lentil soup and the creamy baklava for dessert. Drinks are included in this buffet as well. They offer the usual fountain sodas plus coffee, tea, rose water and a tamarind drink. I hope this places never closes, because it is one of a kind. Great service, friendly staff, good assortment of dishes and a good turn around of the food on the buffet line. Nothing seems to sit for too long before it is refreshed. Hummus and Baba Ghanouge are among our favorites. Fluffy, fresh pita with that brick oven charring! The grilled veggies were better than expected, cooked al dante, and lightly seasoned. We also have sampled eggplant and fried cauliflower, which were tasty, but not among our favorites. The Middle Eastern spiced pot roast, was a favorite, however; shredded, juicy and succulent, it ranks right up there with the fresh gyros and the kafta kabobs, which were pleasingly flavorful without being overpowering. The lettuce is literally brownish, tomatoes were not ripe as all, salad had no dressing on it or on the side. I had to throw ranch dressing on it. Wow - excellent and very authentic. Usually I am not a huge fan of buffets as I tend to overeat, but the meat here always leaves me wanting to go for more. The tabooli, hummus, kafta, falafel gyro meat is all done well and the only other place I can compare this to is when I actually had local cuisine in UAE. Not sure if the chef is local but the way its cooked is superb! Also the variety is excellent - you can go there and only try a few things and make it into a full meal because you really cant eat too much of everything thats on the table. Bland, Food, Lacks Lacks Depth of Flavor Middle Eastern food is something I have a lot of experience making. Tahini, Salt, garlic, lemon, and mint are Essential Ingredients. Use them in the correct proportion, and your food explodes with flavor. Other than tahini, the Essential Ingredients were missing from the food I ate at Dimmassi. The only flavor in the hummus was tahini. It lacked garlic and lemon. The baba was not bad. They grill fresh egg plant so it has a light smokey flavor, but it iacked garlic, lemon and salt. It would hav also been mproved if the egg plant had been cut, salted and allowed to drain before cooking to remove the acrid bitterness. The tomatoes in the taboli were "mushy", like they had been processed then refrigerated for too long. The salad (chopped cucumber, tomatoes, carrots) was made in too large a quantity, so it sat out too long and did not taste fresh. Also, there is a lot of potential to improve the salad dressing by adding fresh lemon and mint. The tomato sauce based hot items shared the same bland flavor profile, and I could taste the can metal. They lacked the essential garlic and mint. The chicken kabob (white meat chicken) was over cooked and dry. I am not a fan of the fresh baked bread, it has too much baking powder for my taste. I preferr the more traditional style of unleavened bread. It is a lot more work to make, but could be the best bread in Austin if it was fresh baked in their bread oven. read more

The food has home-cooked feel to it. It's not like your typical buffet where did your slap a lot of plates. Fresh pita bread comes out of the oven right in front of your eyes. The salad bar and the fixings are really fresh. Everything from the lamb shank to the baklava to the chicken and the gyro meat are fantastic and freshly cooked. read more

Went here this past weekend using a Groupon and I have to say, as much as I dislike the drive from SA, this is one place I will be sure to come back! I am a fan of Mediterranean food, but I have a bad habit of picking the same dishes over and over again because I know what I like. When I saw this place on Groupon, I had to get the deal so I could allow myself to explore more mediterranean food. And I'm quite glad I did! For starters, there isn't much staff here- just a guy at the door/register who says to seat yourself, and another who clears your table occasionally. The rest of the staff are obviously in the back cooking away, I assume. Just a heads up that the drinks and plain pita bread (both crisp and baked) are along the back wall behind the buffet to serve yourself- I totally didn't notice this and went half my meal wondering when we would get water. My bad! Okay, so straight up, I stuffed my face. Let me tell you how. Hummus and baba ghanouj- both tasty, though I prefer the latter to be warm. The hummus had a plain white-ish color to it, which I am not used to, but the taste was not a problem. In addition to the pita mentioned above, there were also two trays of pita slices at the buffet- one topped with melted feta, which I could easily have eaten endlessly if I had been allowed to; and another with spices and seasonings that was also quite tasty. The rice and rice-pasta dishes were flavorful and moist, and I topped them with the chicken kabob which was also moist and well-seasoned: I probably ate way too much of that. There was a chicken pasta dish that seemed overcooked, but that may just have been because it had been sitting out. It just wasn't really my thing, though. I prefer my dolmas warmed, but here they were served cold. They were still okay though, as were the falafel- had way too many of those, too. I tried a few other odds and ends across the buffet, but those were the main noteworthy ones. Now for drinks and desserts- I am not a drinks or desserts person, let me start off by saying. I tend to drink water 99% of my life, but something made me want to try the rose drink- and good lord, I could drown myself in that stuff. It was heavenly. I don't know if it was a tea, or just a drink made with rose water, or steeped petals, or what. I have no clue what it was aside from delicious and sweet. Between this stuff and the honey cake (ode to follow), I could practically feel myself getting diabetes. The honey cake was amazing- it's not something I normally would have even tried, but for whatever reason, I selected a piece when I picked up my baklava (which was pretty generic), and it was like a mouth gasm. Sweet and moist, but somehow dense and light at the same time. I immediately made a mental note to start seeking out bakeries in San Antonio that might have it. I really wanted to eat more than one piece, as I know I won't beback here any time soon and it was so good,but I simply didn't have the room in my belly. I was quite satisfied with the items I did eat, and there are a few others I would like to try in the future- the tilapia and lamb, to be specific. Definitely worth a visit! read more
