We came here around 3 pm on Friday. The food times were there for awhile but flavor was good. Only issue we had was majority of stuffs were quite salty. We have been here several times before and just left after going for Sunday Buffet. Although the food was still fine, it wasn't as good as usual. Plus the buffet was much smaller than it used to be for the same price. No soup. No desserts. Some food had been sitting out for a long time and we arrived at 1230. We had to eat on paper plates from Costco and had plastic silverware. What in the world!? The atmosphere has gone way down hill. Bathrooms were disgusting and the garbage was overflowing in the dining area. They also didn't have lassi at the buffet which they have always had before. Very disappointing trip. read more

Update 4/28/24 So I purchased another Chicken Tikka Masala and I brought it home. I compared it to the first dish they gave me. The color was similar, probably because they used more yogurt and yellow curry and less tomatoes (British traditional) vs the Jndian traditional (significant red, tomatoes and acid). However I can definitely verify the first order had nuts in it, as I made my friend who is also Indian confirm. I am unsure of what the first dish they gave me was, but it wasn't what I ordered. The second version was better but still not what I am used to from India Gate. So another possibility is I just don't like their Chicken Tikka Masala anymore. It's not that red we're all used to. Y'all be the judge and comment. Does that look like traditional Chicken Tikka Masala? In addition, I don't care how many times people get sick of me saying this, but the restaurant could have handled this complaint better. Much better. It's very sad how people and patrons get treated, by the restaurants they are loyal to in times of dispute. To be clear I didn't want anything free, I just wanted what I ordered. Or even an apology. And in addition wanted me to go all the way home to bring the old chicken korma back to exchange for chicken tikka masala. I even asked to speak to the manager or owner whenever convenient. But since I have the actually food container I'm sure that says "CTM" which is obviously Korma that could medically hurt me, I may pursue legal counsel instead. Also the Smart- Ass ladies told me they "never wrote CTM" on their food. Accusing the food to not be theirs. So after I received the order I paid for again, I showed them that they yet again wrote the same "CTM" on their container. They said "sure." Lol I am writing this on here, for everyone in the community to know, that you should always try to do the right thing, and give privately owned business the chance to correct their mistakes even if fatal. But if they will not even let you speak to a manager or owner, sometimes you have to go the legal route. The level of dismissiveness by both employees was so bad I am actually taking the time to write this, for all of you to know. Oh sinister: I went by, the ladies wanted me to go all the way home and bring it back. So I asked my sister to bring it back. I went ahead and ordered the same chicken Tikka Masala and got a completely different item. So conveniently enough they also lost my receipts. And food order from the night before. It's all a little too convenient. Do not go here. You have many other options that will respect your claims (and I've gone here for years). You have better options that take American AA dining advantage. And you have better options that make rice that is not stale. The food here was fairly descent but the way they handles this, for a loyal customer , was so upsetting that we're just going to go elsewhere and pursuit legal action correctly. For all you foodies: don't tip unless you get good service. Don't keep going somewhere unless the food is amazing and they will work with you from time to time. Your money is far too valuable. We came in for a weekend lunch buffet and in summary, this place makes up in quantity what it packs in quality. What I mean is the buffet would be the only reason I return because sometimes you want to enjoy variety and a bite of this and that. If I was to order one item off the menu, I'm not sure I'd enjoy my meal. I do wish they refreshed some items in the buffet a bit more frequently, like the paneer tikka which is hard to enjoy once cold. If you have never had Indian food, I think this is a good place to start. They have weekend and weekday buffets so you can try a variety of food (weekend has less options). They also serve naan to your table as week. They change the food every time, so I recommend checking out their Facebook for a menu of the day. I've gone to pretty much every buffet in Austin. Heck the buffet here is better than some made to order Indian restaurant. This place made me distrust yelp actually because I couldn't believe how bad the reviews were. I don't know if they switched owners or what happened. Also the service is amazing and its kept very clean. Price for buffet is very reasonable probably about the same as a golden corral but instead of frozen food you're getting custom amazingly seasoned Indian food. They rotate the menu so theres always something new to find. I will say I've never had the made to order a la cart menu only buffet so my review is based on that. read more

I decided to have lunch here today because of a review I read online. I was seated promptly because the place was empty. It was noon so I was a bit worried about the lack of customers at peak lunch hour. I wanted to have the Veg Thali mentioned in the post I read but it wasn't on the menu. I asked the server and was able to order it. It was fantastic. The only thing that wasn't great was the rice. It was pretty flavorless compared to other basmati rice I've had. The naan was one of the best I've had, hot, thin and crisp on the edges. I didn't know what the price would be and was pleasantly surprised that it was only $11! This is quite a deal, I will definitely be returning. I think business would improve if the prices for the specials were clearly posted. We have eaten here twice now and loved both eating experiences. We had the special chicken biryani and it was a very healthy portion and full of flavor. One of Austin's best kept secrets. I first discovered this place when I was craving some Indian food. I found out they had a buffet and it's been one of our go to spots on the weekends ever since. There is a variety of delicious food with some traditional favorites. Everything is home-cooked and fresh. I personally love to go to the 11 o'clock buffet on Sundays. Staff is friendly and keep the tables clear as you eat. It's affordable and delicious. Another thing I mention is that I never walk out with a stomachache, even though I eat quite a lot. They really do a great job with the quality of food. Only thing I'll mention that isn't up to par is the bathrooms, occasionally they will be out of toilet paper, at least for the women's restroom. I had the Thalia dish with meat (chicken) for $11.99. The selection was awesome. There was a soup there was plain yogurt. There were three different kinds of chicken fix three different kinds of ways flavored rice, white rice, dal and a very simple dessert with a type of squash and cashews. So filling I had to take some home the service was great and I highly recommend it. I have friends that go there at least once sometimes twice a week and sometimes I join them. India Gate did an incredible job catering our wedding! It was the first they had ever done and they absolutely crushed it with food that was the talk of the night! Seriously, people were saying it was some of the best food they had ever had at a wedding! They came incredible prepared with their servers and more than enough food to feed everyone at the event. They were kind enough to pack up the food at the end of the night so we could bring it back home with us. We had a large menu of items including samosa, paneer tikka and pakoras at cocktail hour, and then paneer, malai kofta, aloo gobi, mixed veg, pulao, naan, gulab jamun at the reception. Go here for a weekend lunch buffet. We went to India gate on a Saturday for a lunch buffet. The place wasn't crowded at all around noon. There were plenty of dishes in the buffet. Even more if you are a non vegetarian. The samosa chaat was the highlight of the buffet for me. They serve naan at the table. The naans are good and the curries are tasty. The place is cleaner than an average Indian restaurant. We paid around $15 per person for the buffet. They also have chai included in the buffet. Taking a star off as when I visited, a few customers complained that the chicken biryani. Even I noticed the weird smell of the bad biryani. They replaced it immediately. This place has great, authentic Indian food. The customers are mostly Indian and that always tells you that you're in the right place. The ambiance is not good though and they have greatly reduced their service expectations. If you get the buffet, they don't even serve you water anymore, you just get a bottle of water from the buffet and don't even have a glass. The women's bathroom is clean but in severe need of repair, one of the faucets has a large hole in it. Why four stars? The food is excellent! But some dishes like bhindi fry and pakoda were too oily and desserts (double ka meetha, fruit custard -too thick with apples only) were sub par. I would have given a higher rating but service at this place was abysmal. They constantly ran out of food and cutlery that led to people waiting in long lines. There was no naan included in the buffet so you had to order it separately and it took forever to get 2 pieces of naan for the table. When we asked for naan again, they made us wait for more than 20 minutes by which time the curries were cold and we left without finishing our meal. Could have been better. It was bland. Informed them and they said they would improvise it. Mirchi Bajji- 4/5. They have actually slit the mirchi bajji and stuffed it with onions and peanuts. But they had chilli seeds in the bajji which made it spicy. They have accommodated us with it. Samosa chat - 3.5/5 - it was ok not that great. Tea - 4.75/5. Almost close to perfect. It was nice and tasty. They have gave us a masala vada which we are not a fan of. It tasted ok. Keep up the good work and try to work with the customers as you are currently doing by taking their feedback will improve your joint more. Also the lady who packed our order needs to understand that a small box of chutney would not be sufficient for 4 mysore bonda. The owner was telling her while packing to put 2 boxes of chutney for one order. She did not even care about his words and did a foolish job. Gone out for lunch with my Indian coworker and he picked this place with lunch buffet, for $16 a person (expensive) Nobody was at the reception and that's fine, we could seat ourselves, and one of the workers just waved at us to come in. You grabbed your bottled water, plate (many were chipped), and off you go to the line. The food looked good though. There was also a corner table for snacks and tea but the tea station was not looking too clean. After getting food and seated ourselves down, we ate and it was pretty good. There was a person giving us a basket of fresh, warm naan. The naan was not bad, but then I noticed a baby roach crawling on my bowl of butter chicken. Then, I found another on the edge of my plate. Next, another was crawling on our table. We changed table after that - no more roaches this time, but I always felt that there was something small crawling on my foot. We finished and tried to pay. The cashier did not greet us and kept trying to fix the paper roll in the receipt printer though we were going to pay with credit and didn't need a receipt. There was no "thank you" or "goodbye". India Gate's biryani 4/5 was really good and the medium spice hit the spot. It was quite bare in what it entitled and was simply chicken and rice, which was odd for me. Their raita was more liquid than I have ever had but served its purpose. Garlic naan 5/5 was superb. Butter chicken 3.5/5 it was good but not as savory as it is supposed to be. We went to a weekend buffet. The food was below average. We tasted vegetable biryani and it was like eating plain rice. The chicken biryani was like eating masala rice with boiled chicken pieces mixed in later. The non-vegetarian curries were okay. But vegetarian curries we tried like panner korma were bland and lack any taste. The curd rice was very tick and it was mostly rice with very little yogurt in it. The doors were open but they were just starting to put the food out, they did not finish putting all the food out until almost 11:30.
