Located in Riata Trace Parkway, this unassuming Indian restaurant is serving some delicious regional Indian cuisine. Normally my husband and I love Sangam and Bay's Biriyani, but were feeling up to trying something different and try different Indian dishes outside of the typical tikka masala, dosa, etc that everyone knows. India is such a vast beautiful country with hundreds of different of states and we feel we haven't touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of cuisine. For appetizer we started with Pazham Pori Chaat, which consists of banana and fig fritters drizzled with chutney, covered in a payyoli mixture with spiced peanuts. I normally love samosa chaat, so wanted to try something similar to it and this was delicious. The fritters were nice and crispy without being too doughy/sweet and the mixture on top encompassed sweet/spicy/sour with a nice crispy crunch from the peanuts and payyoli mixture. It had just the right amount of spice though if you're sensitive to spice you might find it just a tad spicy. As I am a vegetarian (and thankful there were a lot of vegetarian choices for me), I asked recommendation from the chef who came up himself for a curry that I likely wouldn't be able to get at an Indian restaurant and he suggested Ennai Kathrikai, a non cream based curry. And oh man was it delicious! The curry was thick and rich even with no cream, a nice spice (to me not too spicy at all which shocked the chef haha), with silky soft eggplant. It came with a side of rice which is nice. I was so impressed - I normally love cream style curries and often find non cream curries lacking in flavor and spice but this one wasn't at all. My husband got the malavani mutton chukka which though descriptions says goat meat it's really lamb meat and he found it to be nice and tender and spicy - my husband can handle spice usually but with this dish he needed some yogurt haha. Parking is easy and free as it's in a strip mall. We came on a Wednesday night and it was pretty empty but likely due to the restaurant being newer. We enjoyed getting to meet the chef and hearing his vision for the restaurant - he said for example in future going to do breakfast buffet with each buffet showcasing a different region of India (Kerala, etc). This restaurant would be great for large groups as there were plenty of big tables available and set up.

Pazham Pori Chaat Appetizer. Order it!

The house salad with honey bacon is a must, the oysters are consistently fresh and incredible, and the Pappadeaux platter never disappoints. Unfortunately, this visit was a rare miss on service , slow all around, no refills, and they were out of several staples. It was frustrating because the service here is usually just as good as the food. We're not giving up on this place, one off night won't undo years of great experiences, but hopefully just a fluke. Can't wait to be back when they're firing on all cylinders!

About 5-7 minutes go by and nothing. We started eating the crackers at the table because we were hungry. A male waiter nearby noticed we had not been helped so he brought us menus and said Ashley was our waitress and he would see where she was. Another 10 minutes go by and nothing. We noticed an Ashley nearby waiting on the 3 tables surrounding us and she never acknowledged us. She showed 1 table some dessert options, she assisted another table with to go containers, and checked on the other after they received their food. All while walking right passed our table multiple times. I kept looking around and we were about to walk out when Mark, another waiter, stopped to check in on us. He apologized about the wait. He said Ashley was our waitress but he would get our drink order started. I thanked him and told him we were actually ready to order. He then asked what we would like. We placed our drink order and food order. Mark was very friendly and professional. He said his tables were elsewhere but he would be taking over our table too. I was glad to hear. I'm not sure if this was a miscommunication issue or what but it seemed that everyone nearby knew we were at Ashley's table but Ashley herself. Interestingly enough, after the 3 tables near us cleared out, so did Ashley. We didn't see her again. Kudos to Mark!! He was observant and noticed we hadn't been helped and jumped right in. If it wasn't for Mark we were going to walk out and dine elsewhere. A manager even stopped by to apologize. He heard what happened and offered us a free dessert. He checked in against later to see how things were. Mark and the manager are a 10/10. The food was just okay. A bit over priced for the quality and portion. The bread was dry. 7/10 The Ceasar salad was so good! 10/10

Turns out there's one in Fort Worth, so not quite the discovery we thought it was, but no complaints there. The vibe is exactly what you'd expect - nautical without being cheesy, casual enough to walk into after a long evening without feeling out of place. Our server was bubbly and genuinely great, which set a nice tone from the start. We started with two appetizers. The Wonton Tuna Tacos were solid - we did the cilantro and pineapple salsa on the side, which probably cost us something since it's clearly built into the dish, but they still held up. The real standout was the Crispy Rice Cakes with spicy tuna. The crunch, the fish, the spicy mayo - I could have eaten a full plate of those without blinking. The Strawberry Surfer cocktail was also expertly made, and the name alone earns points. For our main we shared the fish and chips, and unfortunately it missed. The fish came out rubbery and the fries needed salt. At a seafood restaurant that's the one dish that should be automatic, so that one stings a little. We'd come back for drinks and apps without hesitation. Just maybe leave the fish and chips alone next time.

But I also saw a family with four kids get seated at a big, round table, and the waiters wasted no time getting drinks in foam cups with lids and straws to the kiddos, and for them to be attentive to all kinds of customers like that is worth calling out. As for the food, I ordered an appetizer and the orange roughy with shrimp with a glass of wine, and my wife ordered salmon the way she likes it (not on the menu) and the waiter didn't blink and it came perfectly done. My roughy came on a bed of risotto and very large asparagus I feared would be tough. Not to worry, they were great, though I would have enjoyed three shrimp instead of two. The crab cake is extraordinary, and I urge you to compare it with other bready monsters you get elsewhere. Delicately crusted with a lightly spicy remoulade, it's a terrific starter. The mousse cake is a touch heavy but the crème brûlée is just right. We ate ourselves silly.

I got to speak with Chef Manny and and Carina, the general manager to gain some insights about the business. Mexican Cocina is based on the cooking method and seasonings. The foods can be cooked over fire, oven or in the stove. Their unique value proposition is that you can choose your seafood from the case and the restaurant staff prepares the food to your liking. The restaurant is very large with different size rooms for rental. For large party rentals the spend minimum is $1000 and during the week it is $800. The bartender was very friendly and attentive to us but the food was very disappointing. We started with the ceviche tropical, which is consists of shrimp and fruit/veggies. It was very underseasoned and did not seem to be well marinated. Moreover, the dish had a fishiness to it that was a turnoff. The chips served with the ceviche had oil collecting on them (see photo). I've had good ceviche in the U.S. and Mexico and this was not it. The main entree was the Tacos Nayarit (fish tacos). The portions of fish were microscopic and also lacked flavor. The Spanish rice served on the side was the worst I've had in a restaurant. It was wet, old and gummy (see photo). The black beans didn't taste bad but they were superheated as if they were warmed in a microwave. Overall, the food was pretty horrible. So very sad as I was hoping to find a good Mexican seafood option in Austin. I was told that this restaurant is owned by the same folks that operate Casa Chapala, where I have had great experiences. Hopefully this place will improve over time.

It's crawfish season (my favorite season), so it was time to revisit The Boat. I'll let the crawfish slide since it's early in the season, but the redfish? Overcooked, dry, and honestly should never have been served. The most flavorful thing on the table was the green beans that came with it. And the price? $26 for that sad little piece of fish. $26.00. I'm guessing the Domain-adjacent location is why the pricing is so outrageous, because the quality sure doesn't match it. Service was basically nonexistent -- having to go to the bar to grab my own beer is a real turn-off when I'm sitting in a dining room paying sit-down prices. This restaurant is understaffed, overly full of itself, and I've had my last meal here.
