I had been driving past this place for the past few months, always meaning to stop in. Last weekend, I finally did. Before going, we browsed the online menu, and what immediately caught my attention was the focus on the west coast of India, especially Goa, Mangalore, and Kerala. It was refreshing to see something beyond the usual North Indian or standard South Indian fare that most restaurants tend to offer. We were tempted to order widely, but in the end we chose two starters and one entrée. The mushroom and paneer starters were both excellent, yet very different from each other. The paneer was smooth and rich, almost comforting in its finish, while the mushroom dish had a gentle tang that brightened every bite. The contrast worked beautifully. For the entrée, we chose the Bunt Kori Gassi, a Mangalorean chicken dish. The flavors were delicate and well balanced, with spices that enhanced rather than overwhelmed. We paired it with Malabar parottas and aappams, which were perfect for soaking up the gravy. Even the complimentary rice stood out. It was not the usual basmati, but a more local variety, a small detail that showed the thoughtfulness behind the meal. The sol kadhi, made with kokum, brought back memories of home. It had that familiar cooling tang that is hard to replicate. We finished with mango kulfi, which was subtle, not overly sweet, and a gentle way to end the meal. The chef came out to greet us personally, which made the experience even more meaningful. He explained that they use mostly organic ingredients and avoid artificial colors. We shared our appreciation for both the food and the service and left hoping they continue to maintain these standards. The menu is already being expanded, including a section for more traditional Indian restaurant offerings. We are looking forward to returning and exploring more of what they have to offer. read more

I was very disappointed with my latest experience at Shallots, especially after having such a positive experience the first time. We arrived on a weekday evening for a quick dinner. There was one other patron in the restaurant, yet service was extremely slow and abysmal. We had to wait a full 20 minutes after asking for the check, and our server was distracted and uninterested the whole time. Food was also a let down. The mangalore chicken curry had a layer of oil floating on top. Dumping oil in the food just kills the flavor. Served with a tiny portion of rice, not nearly enough for two people to share. The food was excellent. We ordered Malabar Paratha and Chilli Garlic Naan alongside Malai Kofta. The breads were exceptional, and the Malai Kofta was delicious--I especially appreciated that it didn't contain artificial food coloring. The curry portion was good, though a slightly larger serving would have been welcome. What really stood out to me was the ambiance. The space is contemporary, clean, and thoughtfully designed. This is refreshing among Indian restaurants in Austin, where the food is often outstanding but the dining atmosphere can vary. In India, restaurants frequently combine excellent cuisine with sophisticated ambiance, and this place comes impressively close to capturing that same balance. The service was solid--our servers were friendly and attentive, and we appreciated the chef taking time to greet us at our table, which added a nice personal touch to the experience. read more

Located in Riata Trace Parkway, this unassuming Indian restaurant is serving some delicious regional Indian cuisine. Normally my husband and I love Sangam and Bay's Biriyani, but were feeling up to trying something different and try different Indian dishes outside of the typical tikka masala, dosa, etc that everyone knows. India is such a vast beautiful country with hundreds of different of states and we feel we haven't touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of cuisine. For appetizer we started with Pazham Pori Chaat, which consists of banana and fig fritters drizzled with chutney, covered in a payyoli mixture with spiced peanuts. I normally love samosa chaat, so wanted to try something similar to it and this was delicious. The fritters were nice and crispy without being too doughy/sweet and the mixture on top encompassed sweet/spicy/sour with a nice crispy crunch from the peanuts and payyoli mixture. It had just the right amount of spice though if you're sensitive to spice you might find it just a tad spicy. As I am a vegetarian (and thankful there were a lot of vegetarian choices for me), I asked recommendation from the chef who came up himself for a curry that I likely wouldn't be able to get at an Indian restaurant and he suggested Ennai Kathrikai, a non cream based curry. And oh man was it delicious! The curry was thick and rich even with no cream, a nice spice (to me not too spicy at all which shocked the chef haha), with silky soft eggplant. It came with a side of rice which is nice. I was so impressed - I normally love cream style curries and often find non cream curries lacking in flavor and spice but this one wasn't at all. My husband got the malavani mutton chukka which though descriptions says goat meat it's really lamb meat and he found it to be nice and tender and spicy - my husband can handle spice usually but with this dish he needed some yogurt haha. Parking is easy and free as it's in a strip mall. We came on a Wednesday night and it was pretty empty but likely due to the restaurant being newer. We enjoyed getting to meet the chef and hearing his vision for the restaurant - he said for example in future going to do breakfast buffet with each buffet showcasing a different region of India (Kerala, etc). This restaurant would be great for large groups as there were plenty of big tables available and set up. read more

We are here almost every weekend and I don't have any photos because the food gets eaten so quickly. We mostly do take out since it is so close to home but despite that the food always remains hot and fresh once we get home which is a sign of the quality in my eyes. Every single time I've been there the people at the check out counter greet you with a smile and with courtesy, it is nice to have kind interpersonal interactions with strangers regularly. It is a very modernized place with a ton of seating and space. The menu is delightful and we will continue to keep coming here and supporting one of our favorite local places. read more

We visited Shallots for the first time today. Honestly, when we walked in, we weren't sure if driving this far was the right call--but we had heard so many great things and decided to give it a try. We're so glad we did! Our server, Chaitanya, took wonderful care of us and recommended the Chicken Tikka and the Kerala-style Chicken Curry. We also ordered naan and the Mysore Masala Dosa. Every single dish was delicious! The curry tasted truly authentic--not the usual creamy tomato-based version you find at most Indian restaurants. Chef Raghu and Chef Rajesh personally came by our table and greeted us warmly. They even offered complimentary appam, which paired perfectly with the curry, and a sample of their biryani, which was outstanding. My friends and I went to Shallots on December 2, 2025, for a late afternoon lunch. The restaurant is easy to find, just off the 183 North frontage road on Riata Trace Parkway. There is plenty of parking available. The interior of the restaurant is lovely, with very comfortable seating. The wallpaper is delightful. Not long after we were greeted, the Chef came out to inquire what we were looking for. He simply asked for our desired spice level (medium) and what protein the three of us might like. When we said chicken and lamb, he suggested shrimp for the third dish. He pointed to the menu and said he would bring Bunt Kori Gassi with chicken (made with a masala paste of dry roasted spices and coconut), Malavani Mutton Chukka with goat (marinated overnight in a paste of toasted coconut and spices, then pressure cooked) and Nellore Roayyala Vepudu (brined shrimp cooked down and "blended with the most intense spices of the Indian sub-continent.") I had seen a glowing review of an appetizer called Pazham Pori Chaat, so I requested that to start. I love how he immediately said he would portion the appetizer in three equal servings. I have to say, the entire meal was an experience I will not soon forget. My friends and I love Indian food, and this restaurant is outstanding. Having the appetizer portioned out was perfect. The dried banana and fig fritters at the bottom of the bowl were drizzled with a date and tamarind chutney, then covered in a payyoli mixture (a crispy, spicy snack originating in Southern India) with spiced peanuts and pomegranate seeds. It was incredible! Then our entrees arrived and we were impressed with each dish. The Chef chose the Idiyappam (steamed rice noodles) to go underneath the curries, which was perfect, and the Malabar Paratha (a layered, flaky flatbread from Southern India). I always order Raita (a cooling yogurt-based sauce to balance the heat). All of it was delicious, and so good together. What a treat. We lingered in the restaurant long after we finished eating. It was just so wonderful we weren't in a hurry to leave. I highly recommend Shallots for a wonderful dining experience. It is my new favorite Indian restaurant in Austin. Cheers! read more

We went in on a Saturday night during a short stay in town. Ordered the daal curry which was ok, the gallouti kabab which says 4 pieces on the menu received only 3 and the Rogan josh which did not taste like a Rogan Josh at all. The chef while we were seated at the restaurant seemed to personally visit all the tables to brag about how he has recipes sourced from all over India and everything is freshly made however the food just did not seem to capture the essence of the Indian dishes he is trying to replicate here and seems to have taken liberties on adding his own spin to the dishes that fall short of the mark. read more

Had a strange experience here the other day. My husband and I came here for dinner. From the moment we sat down, the servers assisting us (two young females) only attended to my husband. They gave him the menus and explained them to him only, not even looking at me or providing me with a menu. Then when they came to take our order, once again only looked to him to place our order. It was though I didn't exist. Then once the food was served, again the two servers came to our table, one after the other, to ask him only how the food was and if he could leave a review since he liked it. It was such a strange experience. My husband noticed as well and we had a few laughs about, it but I do think it spoiled the experience. While the food was decent, we won't be returning. If you want to improve the service/experience, please be attentive to all guests, not just male guests. Thanks. read more
