I'm not sure why this place is rated so low. Maybe it's the kitschy interior that probably hasn't been updated since the Nixon administration, but the food is great! Came here for a work event and one of the bigger footprint restaurants in the Chinatown area. There are 2 floors to this establishment but primarily located on the 3rd floor (elevator available). They have the old school push cart dim sum carriers if you want some nostalgic feel. The cooked menu dishes were a-ok. Don't compare these to the chic 905 establishments for new and different but the dishes served here are hearty and simplistic with good flavour. If I am in the area will definitely drop in for some old school dim sum fun. read more

My parents and I had their all day dim sum and overall it was good, but some dishes were better than others. So the day we went there were 2 big parties (I think weddings) at the restaurant. These parties were on the 3rd floor, which is where the main restaurant is. We were asked if we were ok with dining on the 2nd floor and we said that was ok. The 2nd floor is sort of the "spillover area." It has tables in a few separate areas and also some small private rooms, but it is not as nicely decorated as the 3rd floor. However, we were happy that it was much quieter and we were pleased that service was still attentive and we weren't forgotten. We were given the dim sum menu which is in duplicate on carbon paper. We marked off what we wanted and they take away the top copy and leave the carbon copy on your table. When they bring your items, they cross it off on your table copy. They also check it off on the tally sheet, which is used to add up the total of your bill. I like that it is very clear which items are "small, medium, large or xlarge" and what the corresponding prices are (Small $3.30, Medium $4.30, Large $5.30, XLarge $6.00). We ordered 10 items in total for the 3 of us and we were full afterwards. Steamed shrimp dumplings (Har Gow) "$5.30" (we got 2 orders of these). These were great. They were filled with shrimp and the wrapper was slightly chewy and not too thick. You get 4 per order. Steamed pork and shrimp dumplings (Siu Mai) "$4.30." These were ok. They were a bit too fatty/oily for my liking. However, they were flavourful and didn't have that old pork smell that some siu mai has at other restaurants. You get 4 per order. Fried turnip cakes "$3.30." I liked these. These had some pieces of Chinese sausage in them. They were a bit oily, but the flavours were good. You get 3 per order. Chicken feet in black bean sauce "$4.30." These freak me out, so I didn't eat any. My dad said they were too salty. You get 4 per order. Beef Tripe "$4.30." I have never tried tripe as they look like little pieces of face cloths to me, haha. My dad said they were a bit too hard and too chewy. Beef Tendons "$5.30." Another dish that I didn't try. My parents liked it and said the tendons were soft. Minced Beef Rice Rolls "$4.30." I found the rice rolls too thick and I wasn't crazy about the meat filling. You get 3 per order. Shrimp Rice Rolls "$5.30." (we got 2 orders of these). The rice rolls were too thick and not as soft and chewy as I like. I did enjoy the shrimp filling though. There were 2-3 whole shrimps in each roll. You get 3 per order. Despite the restaurant being very busy, staff were good at making sure we got our food in a timely fashion. We had several different people check our sheets to see what the outstanding items were. We were charged $3 for tea. I was a bit surprised by this because almost all of the Asian restaurants that I've been to offer complimentary tea. Anyway, it wasn't written anywhere on the menu, so I don't know if it's $3 a pot (since we didn't even finish 1 pot) or if it's $1 a person for unlimited tea or what. From the deserted entrance to the long, quiet flight up the stairs, where you might be pondering if you might get slaughtered when u enter. Inside was the typical Chinese Dim Sum loud and crowded atmosphere. This place has the "classic" look of a Dim Sum place. The common Dim Sum dishes were pretty good ( Har gow, Shrimp rice roll, chicken feet, Sui mai, etc). I don't suggest trying the less common items on their menu for they were tasteless or tasted like they were reheated or old (sticky rice with mung beans, curry squid, salty fish pork patty). The staff were friendly. However, the issue was with the food. Subpar at best. Turnip cake was gooey and greasy. The shrimp dumpling has a strange taste to it. The chicken feet seemed reheated to death and had no texture. The Chinese tamale had minimal filling of minced pork, mung bean and duck yolk. Pretty decent all-day dim sum for downtown Toronto (especially since I often go to the ones in Markham & Richmond Hill). I came with some friends at 6pm and their service was good. The food comes out within ~15min of ordering, hot, and our teapot is always refilled quickly. I also LOVED the complimentary dessert they gave which was a lycée goji berry jelly & fortune cookies. Most things tasted authentic and the baked/fried items were crisp and didn't taste like they were frozen before. Come here if you want an authentic dim sum experience. Seriously, I don't know of very many places that still do the dim sum carts and being here brings back a ton of childhood memories of going to dim sum with my family on a weekend. It was very busy on Sunday at noon and the wait time was approximately 20 minutes. Food ain't the best but portions were quite large. The service was pretty dang good and knowing the language is definitely a plus. Also want to add that it's actually quite pricey. Ordered some regular items and 'specials' and total for 7 dishes came to about $38 after taxes. Overall, 3.5 stars. Better than the overhyped Rol San. read more

I was feeling crappy after a crappy day at work. So my friend tried to cheer me up by taking me to this dim sum place. It's located on the 3rd floor of this pretty run down building in china town, so I was expecting it to be plastic table cloth. But stepping in it's like a hidden gem with nice table clothes and chair covers. Clean. The shrimp and chives dumpling was good. The wrapping was not too thick or moist. The har gwa was not bad. I've also ordered the stuffed shrimp paste in egg plant. It was piping hot! Usually I don't eat bbq pork buns, my friend wanted so I ate one, that way she won't be stuck with eating 4 bbq pork buns. This place is sooooo good!!!! The portions are big, and they don't cheap out on the meat! I love it! There are huge selections to choose from, something as exotic as Oysters all the way to the traditional hargow and siu mai. I also love how they are one of the few restaurants left to bring dim sum around the tables in push carts. I really am all about preserving tradition! The restaurant is pretty big, and both times I have been here I didn't have to wait in line. The servers are pretty busy so you have to flag them down. But once you do, they are quick to comply to your requests. I definitely will come here again for dim sum. read more

The high ratings for this restaurant are perplexing to say the least. The place was packed to the brim on a Sunday. They do have cart service for dim sum which is getting rare however the quality of food and service lead me the conclusion that I am better of at a food court! The few items I tried were deviod of taste and the texture was even off for a shrimp dish. The yardstick for dim sum har gow was no where to be found even though we specifically asked for it. Now for the service clumsy to alarming IMO we witnessed food being spilled on the clothes of patrons next to us without a hint of remorse. Dirty dishes being put on the cart that are also carrying foods that is being offered for sale. Servers that would ignore even after you have made an obvious contact. My friend and I came here from a recommendation from a local that grew up here. She's Cantonese and said this was her favorite dim sum place. This place is pretty good but I can't say its better than any of the places I've had in NYC. Their ordering system is a bit confusing. We came here at 930am and ordered with a sheet. My husband and I drove to Toronto for Labor Day weekend, and we decided to come check out the Chinatown area. We both love dim sum and ate brunch here after seeing their ratings. The food and atmosphere was nostalgic and made me feel like a home away from home. My only issue here is the lack of communication and transparency between the staff and us. We ordered the seafood dumpling in soup (we waited for almost 2 hours for them to serve us -- I spoke in Cantonese to several servers who saw what we were missing and instead of saying they're either sold out or it was too complicated to make, they just walk by or push a cart over and try to upsell me on other items while I watch other people who came after us finish eating and leave). The food was delicious, but finally the male server with a string attached to his glasses told me that it's better that I cancel that item because it takes forever to make, and I'm just like why didn't anyone say anything? We'd be cool with switching to something else, then when I decided I'll get the turnip cake and tofu dessert instead -- our seafood dumpling in soup arrived. We were happy with it, but just bothered by the fact of being at a restaurant for 2+ hours. I waited for 45 minutes for my order which are shanghai dumpling, steamed chicken with mushroom on rice and steamed soft egg custard and nothing has arrived so far! This is such a waste of my time. The kitchen does not make the food people order but instead cooks random dim sums and asks customers if they will take them. IMO they should've just cook what people order. Growing up uptown, I got was lucky to have many dimsum options in the Scarborough and Markham area. This is actually my first downtown dimsum experience. Due to covid, my friend and I ordered dimsum on a delivery app. We decided to try Dim Sum King as they seem to have more variety and many of the classic dimsum items. To be honest, the food isn't bag and the food arrived hot. Nothing required reheating. The radish cake would be nice if there's more radish in there. The salted egg yolk bun is always a favourite of mine at any dimsum place. It was fine, but when I reheated one of them later that day, the yolk got really clumpy and part of it crystalized... I had to reheat it as we can't finish 3 buns between 2 people in one sitting with other dishes. The hargow was actually pretty good and my favourite of all the dishes we ordered. There's a generous amount of shrimp in there and the wrapping wasn't very thick. If I were to order dimsum downtown again, I'd consider them! read more

Located a couple blocks east of Spadina and Dundas. Came here on a Friday for a dim sum lunch. Restaurant was about 80% full around noon. Restaurant is spacious and took little time to get a table for 6 people. Decor is better than most dim sum restaurants in downtown Chinatown. What's great about Dim Sum King is they still offer push cart service which not many new dim sum restaurants offer. Being able to see and smell all the wonderful dim sum passing by our table really adds to the experience and helps in deciding which items to order. Their weekday lunch special is $2.80 for small/medium/large. They also have extra large dim sum which costs more. I enjoyed all the items we ordered especially the squid tentacles and beef ribs. Will definitely come back again for some more dim sum. Price is good and quality is better than most places. read more

It's tough to find good dim sum. I've had them from Philadelphia (Dim Sum Garden btw, is your go to), abysmal Atlanta options (there's no good ones, I've tried them all), ok Miami ones (hiding in Pembroke Pines), NYC (hiding in Flushing), and others scattered around the East Coast. However, if you want to have some dim sum that is untainted by Americanized cheapness sacrificing authenticity, larger portions, old school red stage, push cart, and larger establishment hiding in Chinatown Toronto, then I recommend this place. Upstairs in one of the shop houses. Large place across the street from a Shaolin kung fu kind of place. I was impressed most by the beef tendon- what part of the cow did they use to yield such large chunks and maintain the texture/integrity of the pieces?? Dumplings- what I use as my determination of how good a dumpling is for dim sum is how chewy the skin is... sometimes if they've been sitting in the cart too long, they get soggy and the skin breaks and there's no chew. Sometimes the shrimp is all soggy and sandy tasting or there's just not enough salt/flavoring in there. These dumplings were lusciously big and chewy with large shrimps and chives in them. I was very impressed by their quality, size, integrity of the skin. Fried tofu with shrimp- if you love tofu, especially the kind that's crispy outside and silken inside, you want this dish. It's hard to do this right- most places just braise the outside to keep the moisture inside. It's very hard to make it that dry outside but that silken inside. A delicate balance. Other places do the outside super dry but when you bite, the inside is equally as dry to where you'er eating tofu crisps. I was also impressed with this dish. Pork ribs were good if you're a fan of chewing around bones and artfully picking off the meat. It's fun. Congee definitely a comfort food on a cold day if you're visiting in the colder months. Service, not the best- your typical Cantonese loud shouting staff that will snatch your bill and scribble codes, the sheet getting stained more and more with grease and pencil marks as the hour goes. The tea is slammed on your table down as they run off to busily take care of other staff. Your dishes may come in a strange order b/c of how busy they are so don't be weirded out if your egg tarts happen to finish before your steamed dumplings! your food will overall come out eventually, but just don't expect patient waiters slowly explaining and checking on you every 30 mins. read more

The place can pack up quite suddenly as tour buses of people from China show up and fill the tables rather quickly. Service is decent, but you have to be assertive. You are provided with a card of dim sum options allowing you to mark off what you'd like to have. Chicken Feet in Oyster Sauce - these were great! Some places undercook chicken feet, and they can be too chewy. But here the feet are nice and tender. Pig Feet with Ginger in Sweet Vinegar - they pig feet were okay, but the sauce was amazing, with loads of ginger. Braised Beef Tendon - Excellent texture, but something in the selection of spicing had a scent that didn't' appeal to us. Rice Noodle with BBQ Pork - The rice noodle was decent in a good sauce, but the pork seemed quite dry. Chicken and Mushroom in Fish Maw - Tender and juicy chicken, with a delicious mushroom (but only one, unfortunately) and then a piece of fish maw (the bladder of large fish) in a lovely rich sauce. If you like things like tendon and chicken feet, the fish maw should appeal. read more

Not awful, but I have had better from the grocery. We had 10 dishes mostly probably 6 small, 2 Medium, 1 or 2 large, and it came out to $82. I've ordered delivery 3 separate times. Two of the deliveries contained good that wasn't not fresh and even rancid. The first time had an order of Deep Fried Taro with Meat. It arrived stone cold, soggy, and had a texture that it was stored in the fridge from the previous day. The third time, an order of Baked BBQ Pork Puff pastry arrived with a rancid taste and smell. It was awful. Be careful ordering delivery from here because it seems like they are sending "left overs" from the previous day or two to customers. read more

Went here with some locals and they said this was the best dim sum spot in the area. Place was packed on a Sunday afternoon. Our party of 15 got seated in minutes. Food came out really quickly. Everything was really hot in temperature, dishes were seasoned well and the staff was very accommodating. They serve the typical dim sum dishes. We did notice the pepper steak, chicken feet and shrimp balls were very large in portion. Shumai and har gow tasted really fresh unlike the frozen dim sum spots you find elsewhere. They have a really good system going with the rotation of dishes coming around so you don't see the same dish multiple times. Staff is very attentive in re filling your drinks and cleaning your table. The older waitress we had was great in taking care of us and allowing our group to order a la carte. If you're craving some dim sum in the area this is the spot. Location is very clean, staff is great and dim sum here is really good. There is plenty of street parking.
