That is actually still the case at this location in Manhattan, KS, but it's still an above average Hy-Vee, and I'll get to that soon. The first thing you'll notice at this Hy-Vee is that it's large, it appears to be fairly new, or at least very well maintained, but it looks like any old Hy-Vee from the outside. We stopped here as my mother in law lives in Manhattan and we were on the hunt for a veggie tray to take to our family Christmas. We walked in and despite living near a big modern Hy-Vee in Overland Park, this one really puts ours to shame in terms of feeling updated and fresh. We found the veggie trays and they were all beautifully put together and fresh. The thing that was terribly upsetting? They were also $25. With no other options we purchased it at that price. I was wondering if veggie trays are just this expensive now, and for the record, I went grocery shopping at Costco and Whole Foods in the KC metro the next week and found veggie trays at Costco to be around $10 and believe it or not veggie trays at WHOLE FOODS to be around $12 - so less than half their counterpart at a central Kansas Hy-Vee. Honestly stunning. Aside from the prices this is an excellent grocery store. If I lived here I'd likely return as they had way more prepared foods than ours does, and it seemed well stocked with fresh produce. They also still had self checkout which I love.

Just as I got done, one of the paid "watchers" came up to me and told me that register was "Cash Only". I asked "Where is the sign at" and was told it was indicated on the screen. Her and another paid "watcher" tried to get the computer to recognize I was paying by card, but it was not working. They told me I would have to go to another register and start over. I told them politely that THEY were going to scan my items if that was the case, since I already did once. The young lady took me up to register 4, scanned my items and then I could pay with my card. If certain registers are "Cash Only" or "Card Only" then the sign indicating that needs to be up by the register number, in plain damn sight, not on the screen only!! Damn ridiculous!!

We walked in and the new owner told us he opened Saturday and still was getting in products including more produce. There was a pretty reasonable amount of produce though - daikon, greens, lots of types of mushrooms, mammoth ginger root (see my pic), and other goods. There is a lot of space and most of the shelves seemed sparsely stocked, but there were tons of boxes in the back. I think it was cool of him to open before fully stocked, because this is a little more accessible than the other markets, though Yi's is technically walkable from campus. Aggieville is just much closer. There were drinks, snacks, pocky and other sweets, noodles, spices, sauces, rice, and even cookware like bamboo steamers. I bet this will be well received once it is fully functioning. I am thrilled that we have three markets in our small city with ingredients that I use on a regular basis, so this is a welcome addition to town!

Aldi goes through instacart, and it has been very easy to use on my computer and the app. Once my order is placed and time slot for delivery chosen, I can add to, edit, and update my order until the shopping begins. I am able to choose specific substitutes and list notes for the shopper. The delivery fee is only $3.99, whereas the other stores charge $9.99. Both times my stuff was delivered, the way everything was packaged and placed by my door was flawless! I never was much of a fan of Aldi produce but lately what I have received is great quality. I would recommend Aldi delivery for local groceries right now if people are not comfortable going to stores, though the other grocery stores are now offering free pick-up (when some previously charged for this option).
