I'm a little surprised to find myself giving a Hy-Vee a four star rating in 2025 to be honest. Over the years my opinion on Hy-Vee in general has gone somewhat downhill for a variety of reasons, but my biggest quip is that it's just super expensive for no reason. That is actually still the case at this location in Manhattan, KS, but it's still an above average Hy-Vee, and I'll get to that soon. The first thing you'll notice at this Hy-Vee is that it's large, it appears to be fairly new, or at least very well maintained, but it looks like any old Hy-Vee from the outside. We stopped here as my mother in law lives in Manhattan and we were on the hunt for a veggie tray to take to our family Christmas. We walked in and despite living near a big modern Hy-Vee in Overland Park, this one really puts ours to shame in terms of feeling updated and fresh. We found the veggie trays and they were all beautifully put together and fresh. The thing that was terribly upsetting? They were also $25. With no other options we purchased it at that price. I was wondering if veggie trays are just this expensive now, and for the record, I went grocery shopping at Costco and Whole Foods in the KC metro the next week and found veggie trays at Costco to be around $10 and believe it or not veggie trays at WHOLE FOODS to be around $12 - so less than half their counterpart at a central Kansas Hy-Vee. Honestly stunning. Aside from the prices this is an excellent grocery store. If I lived here I'd likely return as they had way more prepared foods than ours does, and it seemed well stocked with fresh produce. They also still had self checkout which I love. read more

I was there in the store today. I got some allergy medicine from here because it works and I'm completely confident that I will be able to manage my allergies because of this medicine. But I don't like coming here because I don't have a car. I took the bus. Because I really needed the medicine. To make a long story short I dropped my wallet in the store. I called customer service and let them know that I lost it and if someone turned it in please call me. They did me one better. They bought me the wallet!!! I always have a pleasant time wherever I do come to the store. They have outstanding customer service. But what I'm even more impressed with is the type of people they have working for them. At first I was afraid, I was petrified, thinking I could ever eat at a cafe inside...a grocery store. Hyvee Market Cafe is actually quite nice, in its own space inside the store. It has a full bar with drink specials, a regular menu, and then special nights. I have been to the AYCE sushi night 3 times. The first 2 times it cost $10.99 per person but last night I noticed a jump to $12.99. This is still cheap but I made a comment about it to the host and she did not even realize the price went up. There were a lot more sushi options than before so I would say the extra $2 is fine. Wednesday nights are forever "cheap sushi night" but honestly this is not supreme quality sushi and the rice is not remotely good (and sushi is all about rice). It is more for the novelty of it. Eric R. and I met newbies to town Jessica H. and Tyler L. for this experience (all 3 of them were first-timers to "cheap sushi night"). There were up to 12 different rolls available plus 2 chafing dishes with fried rice, crab rangoons, spring rolls and donuts. There is a bucket full of sauces for the sushi as well. The variety of rolls included salmon-mango, California, tuna-avocado, eel-cucumber, salmon-avocado, spicy tuna, tempura sweet potato, spicy krab, wasabi and black tobiko coated California rolls. I have been there in the past and saw salmon-asparagus too. The rice on some of the rolls was hard. They are all inside-out rolls meaning the rice is on the outside and nori is on the inside. This used to be a great Sunday morning breakfast spot but has been remodeled into an afterthought. Instead of servers, you now order at the deli counter and pick up your utensils at the door. My egg white omelette was $9 and smaller than the spread of my hand. The orange juice came out in plastic cups and is obviously concentrate with extra water. The Good Morning was not any better for $8. The best part was the toast from their in house bakery. There is a $9 buffet that looks less appealing than chow hall food. I love Hy-Vee! I had never seen or heard of it before moving to Manhattan in 2013 but it was love at first sight and it reminded me of Whole Foods which I also love. After I had my baby in 2015, I couldn't find glass bottles anywhere and was so happy when I found them here! I currently have a gt's watermelon kombucha addiction and after checking many stores, this was the first place I was able to find it which was a major relief since I was thinking I would have to buy a dozen every time I went to Trader Joe's in K.C. (It's also at Walmart if anyone's looking) I love how they have complimentary bananas and Mandarin oranges for kids to snack on in the store. It's always a nice distraction for my three year old. They have a nice loose leaf tea section, local coffee and kombucha, and I always find something new that I want to try. I could browse all day! It's also nice having a coffee "shop" that isn't Starbucks. As much as I love Starbucks, I enjoy variety and I can already drink that while shopping at Dillons and Target. read more

Absolutely the worst and most ethically questionable experience I have ever experienced at any type of business. The bakery incorrectly made the cake I ordered and made a more expensive cake than what was actually ordered. Instead of just price adjusting the extra $40 price different due to their mistake, Mary in the bakery said it was just too much of difference between the quality of the cake she made versus the cake I ordered. I spoke with the bakery manager Robert, who essentially said the same thing. I will note that Mary said she could "whip up the cake I wanted really quick." I was supposed to pick the cake up in 30 minutes and I would prefer a cake that wasn't rushed. I then spoke with Kyle the manager, who is the first one who actually acknowledged the inconvenience and said he would fix the issue and adjust the price to correct the issue. Once the cake was picked up it was very obvious that they either misrepresented how much more expensive and bigger the $85 cake they made was, or they gave me a cake that was "whipped up really quickly" as Mary described and passed it off as an $85 cake while misleading me to believe they were doing a price adjustment to correct their mistake. I called back to make sure this is the cake that's as referenced and quoted as $85 and they confirmed this is the cake that we spoke about being $85. Ethically this is just really unprofessional and morally questionable at best. If this is what this location wants to have represent their product as an $85 cake then so be it. I don't think trying to mislead customers into thinking you are doing them essentially a favor and fixing an issue to placate them and then doing the opposite and insulting their intelligence by thinking someone wouldn't notice is at all how a business should allow their employees to conduct themselves. read more

Pros: Friendly, helpful staff and clean organized store. It's become my regular grocery. OF the items they do carry, they're usually in stock. Military 5% discount is nice. Prices are better than the on-post army Commisary. Cons: The reason why I was compelled to login to Yelp to review Hy-Vee was the fact that I've had one too many items that weren't fresh. Due to the limited shopping options in my little Kansas town, I'll keep going to Hy-Vee, but I've gotten in the habit of looking at the freshness dates very closely. I'm not sure what is the problem with their inventory cycle, but one shouldn't come home with a new gallon of milk and find that it expires in 2 days. I just realized that a pack of frozen biscuits I bought a week ago is already past the due date - frozen food that had only days left while still in the store; that's unexcusable. At all the deli counters I've been to in Chicago, you request what you want and they slice it for you. At Hy-Vee, they have pounds and pounds of pre-cut meat and cheese spread out in the case for display. It's fanned out in such a way as to expose the maximum surface area to the air. It may look fancy but the meat dries out quicky. Before it's even put in the package for you, the edges are all dry. I've solved this by requesting my items sliced fresh, but on more than one occasion, I was told they were out, they actually pre-sliced their entire inventory (which also eliminates the option of requesting a certain thickness in your slices). Yesterday, without solicitation, the woman serving me actually said, "I just sliced the meat that's out there a few hours ago." If their concept of "just sliced" is a few hours of sittiing out unwrapped, even in a cooler, I can only imagine that on slow days that meat sits out all day. I recommended getting there in the mornings. Of course I doubt they just throw away anything at the end of the day. Now I just dig as far back into the coolers as I can to find a reasonable expiration date. Maybe I'm spoiled from the big city (Chicago) where inventory turn-over is higher, but I expect a half-gallon of orange juice to last more than a week in my fridge after bringing it home. There are many major brands they don't carry. I'm a major coupon user and I usually end up bringing home half or more of my coupons because Hy-Vee just doesn't carry some very standard fare. read more

Hy-Vee has an extensive selection of natural and organic foods, a bulk aisle, and terrific meats. The cheese selection is very good. Hy-Vee also contributes to schools and many community programs...so while their prices are often slightly higher than Dillon's or Aldi, they give back in ways that benefit Manhattan. Greetings-- This is not something I usually do, but I felt it necessary and important to share an experience I recently had with my local Hyvee store. After a long day of work, I came home to a fantastic surprise of a canvas tote bag with the Hyvee logo and my name embroidered on the side, full of food and a nice note from the store manager. This surprise made my day and helped solidify my Hyvee loyalty. The kind of care for customers shown through this act is rare-- and very appreciated. It might be easy to write this off as "I got something free, it made me happy", but my appreciation for Hyvee is much deeper than that. More than this instance, I have loved how Hyvee has worked to support our local community, since their opening here. From their involvement with the local food bank (where food is donated), to the community garden (where Hyvee built our shed), to student clubs I work with at our university campus that consistently get donations from Hyvee, to friends bringing kids to visit Santa, or hunt for eggs at the store, events and specials at the restaurant/bar, healthy food classes, the list goes on and on. Thank you, Hyvee for being more than a place that sells stuff. A grocery has such power in a community to be so important-- it really can be a hub of activity for the people who live here. This was my first time at the Hy-vee! Not only did it feel like I was back in Washington but they had everything I missed from back home. All of the staff were happy, upbeat and possitive. I was very pleased when this place opened. It's 24 hours and was only a couple of blocks from my old apartment, so i used to walk there all the time. The deli food is awesome and everybody is helpful and nice. I've never had a bad experience here. The Chinese is so-so. I wasn't real impressed with the noodles, but the peppered duck was really good. They have a large area for seating, so it's actually a nice place to eat. On the downside, they aren't always real good about checking the expiration dates in the cooler of the health food section, so beware of that. But the selection is decent and they offer bulk items, which is nice. They've gotten better about checking the organic yogurt and will often put a discount sticker on the ones that only have a few days left, which is nice if you love Siggis as much as I do. My only other complaint is that the lunch meat in their deli is pre-sliced. This makes it all dry and nasty. But they're usually happy to slice something fresh for you if you ask and if they didn't pre-slice everything they had left in inventory. read more

I had the Thia peanut chicken wrap, when it finally arrived it didn't look good or taste good. The chicken was tough and rubbery and the wrap was sloppily put together.
