4.3 and rounded up!
Was looking for dinner on more traditional Viennese side, ended up here which was more of a mix of old and new, and enjoyed it!
Came here on a Wednesday evening around 6:30pm a party of two without reservations and they seated us right away. The evening was clear and warm so my friend and I sat outside, the ambiance in the adjacent small square was great, several other restaurants with diners also eating al fresco. As later evening approached, towards dusk there were some bats flying around the square to my amusement, not bothering anyone per se, though if you're not a fan maybe eat inside.
The menu has a fair number of options for food and drinks, we opted for pear and apricot sparkling juice €4.99 which interestingly they served separately--the sparkling spring water and the juice, I suppose that way you can adjust the level of sweetness and bubbles to your preference.
Food: first - I think it's wonderful that Europe is so far ahead of the US in terms of allergens labeling, basically every restaurant we went to had a unified list of allergens and these were denoted next to each menu item.
- Hausgemachte Spinatknödel mit brauner Butter und grünem Salat (Homemade spinach dumplings served with a green salad) €13.80: this was an appetizer though pretty filling since the spinachball was made of dough, spinach puree and cheese. Tasty and moist, though a little dense for my preference.
- Garnelen aglio e olio (scharf) auf gegrilltem Joseph Brot und Rucola (Prawns aglio e olio (spicy) with grilled bread and arugula) €16.90: my friend got this as an entree and though delicious and the shrimp were cooked perfectly, arugula was fresh bread was properly toasted m, though the serving size not quite enough to fill up one person. That being said, she had semi-intentionally ordered less knowing we were going to eat some cake from Demel that we'd gotten to go earlier.
- Wiener Schnitzel vom Kalb 100g mit Petersilkartoffeln und Preiselbeeren
(Original viennese schnitzel from veal with parsley potatoes and lingonberry jam) €18.90: probably the best Wiener schnitzel I've eaten to date, crispy breading that was surprisingly not too heavy, the veal was tender and not too oily. Potatoes were cooked well and the sweetness and tartness from the lingonberry jam was a nice counterpoint to the fried schnitzel.
The staff was friendly and helpful in explaining what each dish was, and offered suggestions when we had questions, also making a couple fly-bys to check in on how we were doing. Easy to pay by card.
Inside the restaurant was seating for a little more than seated outside, maybe good for 35-40 people. It's pretty casual inside and set up like a nice pub, with dark wood paneling for booths and seating for mostly groups of four, a good-sized bar towards the back left. Bathrooms were in decent shape. read more
