Very plain without a lot of flavor. But I should've known better. Another person had goulash, which was served with these flat round dumplings. Another person had the schnitzel And finally the fourth person had the fish. He did not really comment on whether he liked his meal or not. This place has hosted the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, Shubert, Mark Twain, Johnny Cash and just about anyone of note in the past 500+ years! You can feel the history in the walls! The food is good, not excellent, and a bit pricey. The service is professional and timely. Try to book the Mark Twain room if you can. This is where all the signatures are. We came to Griechenbeisl for dinner on a Sunday a little after 7pm without a reservation and were able to get a table outdoors (as most places here, there is always outdoor and indoor seating) but we wanted a view of the street and opted for that. The ambiance was very relaxed and the service was attentive. Our server brought us some table bread which was very fresh with a paprika spread while we thought about what drinks and food to order. We got two glasses of white wine which were very good and refreshing. For food we split got: - Smoked duck appetizer: delicious! Really thinly sliced yet flavorful and tender pieces of smoked duck that come with some orange slices and an apple salad that was really similar to coleslaw. Loved the combination of the smoky duck and sweet apple. Really nice presentation. - Fries: very solid thick cut fries! Not greasy and perfectly salted. We purposefully got this with our appetizer round instead of as a side with our main meal. The fries went very well with the salad from the dish above. - Beef goulash: my boyfriend ordered this and it was very generously sized. Really tender meat and a nice flavor of paprika and onions mixed with the meat juices. It came with a dumpling like patty that tasted a little bit like corn and really helped soak up all the sauce. Very comforting and filling dish! - Chicken breast with arugula salad: I got this chicken really expecting a large portion of chicken over a small base of arugula but turned out being more like a salad instead, which was overall good, but I would order something else next time like the schnitzel-- which looked delicious by the way-- to get a better sense of the local cuisine. Felt really light and healthy though if that's what you are looking for! Overall very good service and solid food. I made a reservation here 2 months in advance. And sure enough, people with no reservations came here hoping to snag a table - but they had to wait. We arrived 2 hours earlier than our reserved time but they gave us a table anyway. THANK YOU!!! The place does look its age and it's quirky. Google Maps told us we've already arrived - we weeks confused. "It looks like gaudy restaurant that tour groups take you to." So, we kept walking back and forth looking for Griechenbeisl. We went to the side of the door that looks like an entrance but isn't. We were greeted by the friendly host. I told him we were 2 hours but we're hungry. He showed us to our table. All the servers were friendly. The menu is limited. A few soups, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. They'll give you a basket of semi-warm bread and pepper cream cheese (like pimiento). We got a pumpkin soup, Wiener schnitzel, pork shoulder that comes with a side of sauerkraut. After being in the Middle East where pork isn't available, I was so happy about that crispy pork shoulder. We skipped dessert. I had specific places bookmarked for that. Overall, the food was alright. Today we started with Alt Wiener Souppentopf (Viennese soup pot for 2); served hot, this hearty broth was filled with diced meat, spaghetti and some veggies. It was a good start on a cool fall-like day. We opted for this knowing we'd get our fill with Wienerschnitzel dinner, which we shared given the generous portion size. Oh what a treat to get one of the classic dishes served in a landmark restaurant! The meat was very thin and tender, breaded and cooked just right - excellent meal! We both had the same thoughts as the previous visit, it was good but we've tasted better schnitzel. On the plus side the schnitzel was pretty large so we asked for a 'go bag' but they left out the potatoes we didn't finish, just gave us the schnitzel. I was solo and didn't have any reservation, but super luckily I could have the dinner in the Mark Twain room under the Beethoven's signature on the ceiling (and other historical, phenomenal people's signs like Mozart, Schubert, Egon Shile) . The waiter and host were both soo friendly and happily pointed the signature for me with the long stick if you ask where a specific signature is. And the schnitzel was crispy and fresh, too. The complimentary bread and butter were not worthy to fill your stomach though. But the entire experience was just dreamy and I would definitely come back here!!! We had reservations for a Monday night in May which we did not need. Yes, it is a bit touristy but how often do you get to eat at a restaurant that was established in 1447? A place where Beethoven and Mozart have dined. It isn't a far walk from Stephanslatz and they have a very nice patio. The servers were friendly and food arrived quickly. I had the salmon with beet risotto and my husband had the schweinemedalions. Both of our meals were very good. We made a reservation in advance and the restaurant was very efficient in communicating by email. When we checked in everything was in place and ready for us. There's a myriad of rooms so finding the entry can be a little confusing. Walk down the vaulted alley to the reception counter. Service was very professional and matter of fact. There was definitely a tone of pleasing us. We ordered a top notch white Austrian wine and it was delicious, a Gruner Vetliner. Austria has some good red wines too and this would be the restaurant to try one. We both had soups. Being Fall there were a number of pumpkin options so I had a thick and rich pumpkin soup and my dining companion had the rich thick goulash soup. Both were incredible. I then went on to the ever ubiquitous Weiner Schnitzel. It was enormous and barely fit the plate. Coming with lemon to squeeze as one likes, it was perfectly made and delicious. Definitely one of the pricier places one can eat in Vienna. My two friends and I easily got a reservation on a Tuesday night (only called an hour ahead). The wiener schnitzel is large! When Greek and Levantine merchants settled around the middle of the 17th century, the area they inhabited was called the Greek quarter. In this way, the guest house received its present name, Griechenbeisl. It is the oldest guest house in Vienna dating back to the 1400's. I would say this is a tourist restaurant rather than a great Viennese restaurant. It's an old restaurant that is famous due to the fact that Albert Einstein used to eat here, and many famous musicians also used to frequent this place like Strauss and so on. It's got a number of rooms and we were in the round room for dinner. It's a gorgeous old place and the ambience is amazing. For that I would give it 5 stars. The service is also excellent and the staff were very well dressed and very attentive. The food is just ok for me. The fish was overlooked and lacked some taste. There was too much sesame crust for my liking. The soup was also ok and the sachertorte was also ok. The drink choices were ok as well. I would like to come back here and try their normal menu before making up my mind about the food. I'm not gonna lie, my opinion for this restaurant wavered between a 3-star, 2-star, and then finally I settled on the 4-star. But keep in mind that the 4-star is not because of the food, not at all, because the food is barely a 3-star quality, but of the entire experience. First, it must be noted that this restaurant is over FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. This is a quote from their site: "The Griechenbeisl (The Greek Inn) is one of Vienna's oldest inns. And yes, they have given their autographs - on the celings and walls of one of the vaulted rooms of the restaurant. That, alone, is worth a little visit, no? Well, I wasn't so sure myself at the beginning, since I am never one to go somewhere because it's ancient. But my boyfriend is, so he dragged me there. The outside of the restaurant is really pretty, so I was already slightly impressed. A little walkway via stone stairs behind the restaurant leads to the Danube river. Nice. As you walk in, you are welcomed by low ceilngs and winding cave-like halls and rooms. Pretty cool. There are framed pictures of the outside of this restaurant from hundred of years ago, and it almost looks exactly the same (see picture). Even cooler. Nevertheless, when we were seated, we were a bit shocked at the brisk, no-nonsense attitude of our server. My bf and I had lunch at 2pm and we came into this restaurant at 5pm (we had to be somewhere at 7pm) so we weren't very hungry. After ordering a glass of wine and a beer, I asked for the beef broth with semolina dumplings and the boiled rump. My boyfriend wanted to have the appetizer salmon. The conversation went as such: "Can i get the salmon?" BF points to the menu The server's reply: "small, cold, appetizer" waits for him to pick something else. We tried to ask him for more information, but he didnt really provide any, and then walked away to give us more time to select from the menu. When he came back, my bf tried to joke with him on whether he could give us three words to describe the perch pike, he said, "warm, not appetizer" with a hint of irritation. So we made our orders. The food was expensive and not very tasty. The soup was bland and the dumpling was a piece of dough that was very sandy for 6EUR. The rump was flavourless and the sauces that accompanied was bland. My boyfriend's pike was actually quite good. Each of the main was about 23EUR. At the end of the meal, we asked for the cheque and another server asked us if wanted to see the autographs, we said yes, and he led us to a room with all the signatures. And then with a giant stick, he tried his best to point out people he thinks we would recognize. He left us there to take pictures. Afterwards, as we were leaving, my boyfriend pointed to a set of staircase leading downwards, and asked where it led to. The server told us it was just the cellar for employees "where the beer bottles go, and wine cellar, and cleaning." As we walked back to our eat to get our coats, the man asked our server to take us downstairs! That was cool Three floors of the oldest part of Vienna! They told us that this restaurant, and the cellar are the only preservations of old vienna (and then he showed us on the map too). After doing a little googling, i did realize that it's pretty normal for this type of service in Vienna and in comparison, these guys are really really great. Love the experience here. Perfect if you're looking for a casual bite to eat amongst the historic flare. We ate early and were able to enjoy the Mark Twain room. Being a history lover, we spent the majority of our meal staring up at the many names we recognized. We both got the Wiener schnitzel and it was delicious. One thing to be aware of - we did attend on a date night, expecting it to be a bit quieter. But with a family nearby with a loud child and the other rooms being filled with groups, it did get quite loud towards the end of our meal. This place definitely has character - from the building, to the servers, to the ambiance. We were very drawn to the old, classic charm they definitely tried to play up. The food was extremely fresh, with that traditional Germanic crudeness in presentation (think potato mash plopped on the plate). We got a seasonal green garlic soup that was flavorful, fish that was super fresh, and the Austrian dumplings that was good though heavy. Service was attentive although slightly a bit intrusive in their curiosity of us being Asian American tourists (we got the "no, where are you really from?" Entrees were a bit expensive for what they (mid-20s to 30 Euro) were though portions were quite generous. We tried the creamy potato soup (6 Euro), the wild boar filet with creamy cabbage and whole wheat gnocchi (24 Euro), and the cold beef carpaccio appetizer with pumpkin, chestnuts and other toppings. We enjoyed each of our dishes, but they were not examples of inspired cooking or preparation. The boar, cooked medium, was prepared to the perfect degree of redness and was as tender as game can be. The apple strudel with ice cream was delicious--the exterior of the strudel was crispy and flaky. With an aperitif and a glass of Zweigelt, plus a bottle of mineral water, our bill came to 68 Euro before 10% tip. The atmosphere is cozy but a bit brightly lit. We found the dining areas to be split up in smallish rooms with 5-6 tables in each. There are at least a couple pianos with a pianist who roams from room to room to play them. Some of the music was nice, some a bit weird and made us laugh (Star Wars theme at dinner-- really?). The restaurant purports to be 500+ years old and to have been frequented by the likes of Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. There apparently is a wall of signatures that is neat to see, unfortunately, no one informed us of this while were there. Our service was impersonal and slow, but in our experience, par for the course for central Europe. I felt like we were among only tourists, which was a bit of a disappointment but not surprising given that it was in our guidebook. We supposed this would be the case even before we went but wanted to check it off our list nonetheless. Chef tries too hard and the service staff doesn't try at all. I had the beef carpaccio. The meat was some of the best I've ever had but there was so much garnish on it that it overwhelmed the taste. But my major problem was the waitstaff. We would ask questions and the waiter would answer is like we were stupid. In this really condescending tone. And he obviously spoke English but refused to speak it to us. Which I wouldn't normally object to, because it's their country, but this is a touristy restaurant and 99% of the people in there were speaking English, including the elderly Japanese couple and what sounded like some bratty French euro trash. Eat it, dude. Also, one member of our party had a Russian accent. They gave her a Russian menu even though she was fluent in English, and the Russian menu had a price for a glass of wine that was €1.75 cheaper than it was supposed to be. Rather than just eating the €1.75, the waiter told her basically to go f*ck herself in German (little did they know another member of our party spoke German), and told us (in English which he suddenly spoke) to call the number on the back of some brochure if she had a complaint. Finally they relented when a manager came over, argued some more, and decided it wasn't worth the hassle. This place is overrated, coasting by on the fact that it's really old, and unduly pretentious and hostile for a restaurant that depends on tourists for its business. read more

We traveled to Europe with a large group containing multiple families. This spot was a main destination in the plan to celebrate the birthday of one of our party. They were great about the advance reservation and helping with birthday surprise plans. When we arrived they had small foil birthday confetti all over a specially set table. The food is pricey and is ok. It isn't about that, it is about being in a 550 year old spot and having some fun. The waiters were a howl, and when they brought the cake with a giant firecracker thing on it, the whole place got engaged in the fun. They had a lovely accordion player in the room, and never left us unattended. We brought 6 kids with us and they were treated so well, and not with some of the disdain we have seen where it was assumed in advance that the kids would be misbehaved. Personally, I loved the character and sense of fun and boldness of their serving staff. The food was really nice, and plentiful. This is Austria in a nutshell, a lot of food, a sense of fun and a bit of tongue in cheek. We really appreciated the quick tour of all the famous signatures on the ceiling of the one dining room. I didn't head to Griechenbeisl expecting to find good food there. I didn't even go expecting to find decent food there. In fact, I didn't go for the food at all, but just so I could say I ate in a restaurant that had been around since 1447, So when we dropped by on New Year's Day hoping we could grab a table for our final sit-down meal in Vienna, I was expecting a place that would feel more like a kitschy touristy Disneyland idea of Austria than the real thing, offering so-so food, because with the draw of a history like that, I figured they didn't really need to do any better to draw them in. So I was surprised when restaurant interior felt real (albeit maze-like), and the food was actually good. I went for the Austrian standards -- goulash for an appetizer, weiner schnitzel for the maim course, and apple strudel for dessert. My wife ordered the thin-sliced roasted sirloin with fried onions and pan-roasted potatoes, with two kinds of chocolate-mousse for dessert. While none of the dishes were so mind-blowingly amazing that I felt, "man, I've just _got_ to get back _there_," which is how I felt about Huth and Steirereck, the food was competently prepared, and not at all disappointing. (Hope that doesn't sound as if I'm damning with faint praise. Believe me, if I had issues with the food, you'd know about it.) The service was friendly, and I enjoyed taking a look at the room filled with autographs of earlier visitors such as Mark Twain and Mozart. I came in here rather late to enjoy a nice soup, some bread and many-a-beer. Everything I had was delicious, if a little expensive, but I guess this is Vienna and I should expect everything to be overpriced. At least the soup was in a big portion, and the bartender was prompt (though a little rude and snippity) in getting me more beers. Lots of couples on dates here and groups of 2-3 young men sitting around the bar and chatting. I sat at the bar and read a magazine and really enjoyed the people-watching. Oh, this was a little before Christmas, and part of the reason I chose this place was that it had the best Christmas decorations in the area with cute little lights everywhere and just a charming and homey atmosphere. I was half-way through and the hostess brought me ANOTHER ONE saying that I needed my strength--I must have been drooling over it while I was eating, and we were pretty much the last people in the place, but WOW--and no charge for the second one, which I managed to eat half of--I was much younger then. The composed salad was the same at every restaurant we ate at in Vienna, and was both good and interesting since it was early February and not much fresh produce was around at that time of year. This was quite an experience that I will never forget--and it occurred in 1985. I travelled all over the world for work; the ONLY city I want to revisit is Vienna, and this is the one restaurant I must go to again. Cheers! read more

Authentic Austrian food in the middle of the city with more than hundred years atmosphere. The waiter is friendly and helpful. Local draft beer is so good. Food taste good and ingredients are fresh. Reservation in advance is recommend. read more
