Our first meal in Austria and it was a good way to get introduced to traditional Austrian cuisine. I went with the veal schnitzel and my husband got the roast which came with two dumplings. The schnitzel was cooked well, seasoning was ok. It's light with mainly just a lot of salt but I think that's fairly typical. The potato salad came in this vinegary sauce and was nice to cut the schnitzel. We also did the apple streusel for dessert which was nice too but took forever for some reason to come out to us. Amazing dining experience at Sixta located in the hip Margareten neighborhood in the 5th district. We were greeted warmly by the host/owner/manager Zeljko (Jacob) and seated right away in a nice booth. The decor is kinda pub like but not...really nice not too dark. They do have outdoor seating. The service was impeccable. Our server was so nice and Zeljko gave us shots of Hazelnut and Apricot Schnapps on the house. I will def return when go back to Vienna. The interior is super vintage--dark wood panelling, soft lighting, and velvet curtains--but we opted to sit on the patio. It's out of the way, meaning 30ish minutes away from the St. Stephens area, so it seems less like a tourist trap. To start, the beef in the goulash was suuuper tender, the tendons were literally jelly. The sauce itself was a tad salty, but I loved the strong fennel flavor (think star anise and coriander) even if it was a little monotone. The hidden gem was the soft, buttery potatoes hidden at the bottom of the salad bowl, basking in the sweet and sour, mustardy and oniony salad dressing. It is possible to find a restaurant where the food, service and reviews do in fact capture the experience - it is Sixta. I did a lot of homework to find this restaurant, in particular trip advisor and others, Sixta always came up in the top 5. I can see why. From the moment we arrived we were treated like family. The hospitality and charm was evident from start to finish. We tried a variety of dishes, starters of dumplings and risotto. This was by far the best risotto I have ever had, topping any I had in Italy in Florence or Rome. Our mains were pork, fish and goulash, all spectacular and delicious. The recommended wine pairing was just right. In all our bill came to a very affordable 120 euros for 3, including a half carafe of wine, 2 sodas and bottled sparkling water. We have tried some of the Michelin star restaurants on this trip and none came close to how perfect this meal was. I strongly recommend making a reservation as there are a limited number of tables and with the value they offer, it's a busy place. read more

Really glad I made it here. Sat outside and you absolutely get the feeling this is a small mom and pop's place. One of the servers (owners?) grandmother showed up and he sat her down and he entertained her when he could and she even turned around and talked to me! He accused her of flirting with me! Haha! That was pretty awesome. Got the veal schnitzel and it's solid. Still not amazing-honestly, I just don't think schnitzel is a food that can be great. It's served with a jam which I've never had with schnitzel and it made the taste pretty awesome. The little side potato salad that comes with this is awesome though. Like I could have eaten a whole bowl of just this. I was really amazed. That cocktail looking drink was some kind of grapefruit apertif-I don't think it had any alcohol in it. It was super refreshing, I ordered a 2nd one. When I asked for a recommendation for the dessert the waiter told me he made the menu so he didn't put anything on it he didn't like! Haha! Amazing! Great food, very nice and attentive wait staff. I had the vegan risotto which was so good. And the cold tomato soup. I ate outside (my choice), but inside is so cute. I highly recommend and would eat here regularly if I lived here! I think it is gay owned but mixture of people. Sexual orientation irrelevant. SIXTA's schnitzel was appropriately excellent, crisp and salty with a slightly vinegary potato salad. Just perfect. And my wife, who's not a meat-eater, loved her risotto. We really enjoyed the range of wines by the glass, especially a Roter Veltliner, which is uncommon in America -- and a delicious Blaufrankish. We were about the only people in the dining room who weren't from the neighborhood -- but service for us, as for everyone else, was excellent and friendly. It was great to see friends and families dining together and having a good time and feeling a little part of that experience by the welcoming attitude of everyone in the restaurant. The potato salad is decent but figlmüllers are definitely tastier. The schnitzel size we felt were a bit smaller than other restaurants we checked out on. A very popular restaurant a short walk from where I live is Sixta. This eatery specializes in Wienerküche - Vienna Cuisine. Sixta must be listed in many guide books and also well-reviewed on the internet, because there are always a lot of tourists eating here and it is not on an obvious tourist route. Well the reward of eating here is some very good food in a classic Viennese atmosphere. I felt like a Zwiebelrostbraten the other evening, so I headed to Sixta. The beef and onions were perfectly prepared. Desert was a Pavlova which wasn't up to what it should be. That is because the meringue had gotten too hard and chewy. Everything else about the Pavlova was beautifully presented but the meringue needs to be easier to eat. I have to deduct a star for that reason. The waitress who took my order was very friendly and efficient. The waiter also serving me was not as attentive (when I wanted pepper it was impossible to get his attention - finally the waitress/bartender saw me.) He did get a bit friendlier by the end of the meal. I can def recommend Sixta for some tasty Viennese cooking! But to be honest, it is so popular - it doesn't need my recommendation! read more

Oh my goodness, big shout out to the yelpers who provided reviews this place certainly didn't disappoint and was probably the best meal of our entire European vacation hands down. I honestly would come back here again the next time I'm in Vienna it was that good. Not to mention it was pretty reasonable as far as price. For us this was within walking distance to our hotel as we didn't really like venturing too far out after a long day of walking and sightseeing. We arrive around 6 and were promptly seated. Granted if you're coming sometime after 7 I'd advise getting reservations as this place gradually filled up after we arrived which based on the food I can see why its so popular. I had the schnitzel, and my husband the chicken cordon bleu which we both really enjoyed. My husband was curious about the spatzel which his mom sometimes makes so he wanted to try it for comparison which it blew his mom's out of the water. Between the gooey cheese, cooked onions, and bacon with a nice cooked topping of crusty cheese on top oh my goodness. I will probably dream of the spatzel until I can get back there. Also they have a monthly rotating menu as well. The service was top notch the guys that were manning the bar and serving us were just as nice and as friendly as could be and you could tell this place had a neighborhood vibe based on the way they greeted several of the customers who came in. This was one of the best meals I've ever had in my many trips to Europe! It was so good that my family went two of our three nights in Vienna. The atmosphere was cozy, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Servers are extremely friendly and accommodating. On to the food... Since I was in Austria, I had to try the veal schnitzel. It was light and crisp, drizzled with lemon and served with a truly unique potato salad made of scalloped potatoes with a creamy balsamic dressing and tomatoes. I generally love potato salad but this was unexpected, and so delicious! Also, the portions are HUGE. My sister and I ended up sharing one plate of the schnitzel and that was enough food for us both. On the second night, I had the roast beef. It was served with some fried onions on top, and perfect potatoes (light and fluffy on the inside, crisp and salty on the outside). Other dishes- My mom had the garlic linguini with giant prawns which she liked enough to have both nights! My sister also tried the veal special, tender and flavorful. Rated high on TripAdvisor so made the long trek from our hotel to here. Definitely located outside the city center and tourist areas, in a quiet residential area. The service was friendly and set in a casual atmosphere. We started with the spicy shrimp salad which was absolutely divine. The grilled shrimp was cooked perfectly and the dressing paired nicely. The dish said spicy but it was not. We shared two entrees: pork with onions and the grilled octopus. The portions were large and generous compared to Austrian standards. They were both decent but not rave worthy like the shrimp salad. I would recommend that they pair the pork dish with some truffle mash potatoes. As for the octopus, it was grilled well however the black bean purée on the bottom seem to takeover the dish and was way to filling to eat. I recommend putting over black risotto instead. read more

We had no reservations on a Sunday night, but were still seated within about 10 minutes, despite the place being pretty full. Service was fantastic--everyone spoke English, they were prompt and the food came out fast (but not so fast that you felt rushed) and they even gave us a free dessert drink, which was very strong, but very good (hazelnut). Wow. We were 6 ppl and got a table immediately. The food arrived in less than 15 minutes and it was some! We had Schnitzel, which was exelent, especially the potato salad that came with it. The girls had the Cheese-spätzle that were also very good. They have nice beer selection, and the service was nice, fast and friendly. The asparagus avocado salad was apparently simple yet exquisitely designed for textural, visual and flavor satisfaction. The following asparagus risotto was equally satisfying; for some reason the flavor was further enhanced with the eyes close. My boyfriend and I were just recently in Vienna and we stopped here on our second night. First of all, the service was amazing. They sat us right away even though we didn't have a reservation. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Already having our schnitzel, my boyfriend ordered the salmon dish and I got the chicken wrapped with bacon and stuffed with spinach (I cannot remember the actual name of the dish), also unbeknownst to me what I ordered is their house specialty. Both dishes were SO delicious. They were cooked to perfection. After we paid, our waiter even offered us a shot on the house of a hazelnut schnapps. I've been in Vienna three days and chose to have two meals here, or 4 meals if you count me trying my friend's meals. The schnitzel was the best I've had in Vienna. On my return trip i had the octopus with lentils. These were the most perfectly cooked lentils you can imagine. The octopus was tender. My friend had the fish with vegetables on her first night. The fish was flaky. The lemon cream added the right amount of acid and creamy texture. She also had the risotto. Don't be fooled, good risotto can be found outside of Italy. There was an abundance of chanterelles in this risotto. If you love mushrooms this is your dish. We shared the apple strudel, which I can live without. Think apple pie without the flaky butter crust. It's was just ehh to me. The pans cotta on the other hand was out of this world. Brilliant use of cardamom. Creamy, full bodied, tart fruits sauce to count balance the richness of the panna cotta. Simply divine meals both times. The host, we assume he is also the owner could not have been nicer. He even gave use a free hazelnut shot. If you're in Vienna, come here. It's a little out of the way from the city center but worth the trip. You know it's good when locals stop by with their dogs to have dinner and the host/owner greets them by name. read more
