Reservation for 4 on a Monday afyer Christmas. We entered about 630 for our 7pm and though busy they sat us right away. Christian was there straight away to take our drink and wine bottle order soon followed by Tisch to take our food order. The tables were turning over and even though both were very busy they handled everyone surprisingly well. Food and drinks were delivered as ordered by runners and Tisch kept in touch and kept us hydrated the rest of the stay. We dined on Monday's Special Ghoulash and Gnocchi, Veal Snitzel and potato salad, Meatballea and Beef Ghoulash soup. Everything was good. Being quite near to the place I was staying, Zum Leupold was the spot my host recommended for a nearby dinner and it was easy to see why. Though there are many other nearby places to dine, Zum Leupold, with pleasant al fresco seating that flanks the sidewalks, was impossible to miss. Though many of the tables are outfitted with "reserved" signs and you'll be asked if you have reservations, I dined here twice with no advance reservations, landing an outdoor table on both occasions. Was it a place that's worth dining twice at though? That's the question. Here at Zum Leupold I think one should stick to foods that are traditional to the area and not stray from that regardless of the what's on the menu. Goulash and goulash soup were perfect representations; roast beef far less so. I grew partial to the fried Emmentaler cheese dish that's served with berry jam because, well, fried cheese. I'm uncertain of the origins of this dish but harbor a belief that fried cheese is never a bad thing;in fact, it's quite delicious. Pleasant and tasty if you keep things fairly basic, this full service restaurant proved quite satisfying on both visits. read more

Quick, competent service. The Tafelspitz was outstanding as was the pumpkin soup. Very commendable is the fact that they offer half-size portions of most of their dishes. From the very first time I went to Vienna, the Hilton Vienna Plaza Concierge who recommended Zum Leupold, every time since we have enjoyed a dinner there. The restaurant often gets very busy so making a reservation is very much recommended. The menu is full of Viennese delights with something for everyone, even vegan specialties. Service is very attentive and paced leisurely which lets you relax and enjoy your meal. I am a big fan of Viennese Pancake Soup and without question the Wiener Schnitzel is absolutely mouth watering! Had lunch at Zum Leopold last week...overall it was pretty good! Service isn't super friendly but food comes out quickly. Ambiance is nice in an old-school charm way. Location is great. Stumbled upon this place while wandering the city. What a great find! Never been to Austria before today, and I didn't feel like having a schnitzel- the hostess recommended the tofelspitz. Boiled meat doesn't sound too appetizing to me but I went with the recommendation. Wow! Best meal I ate all week! Reminded me of my Moms cooking. Really good, flavorful slices of beef, a great gravy with carrots and things, and a scoop of potato salad. Seriously good food! Had a couple beers, but I honestly don't remember what they were. (It was whatever they had on tap). I occasionally wake up at night thinking about that meal! Good looking, friendly staff, decent prices. We thought service was great. They have a lot of local customers who obvious love this place and for good reason. I am a tourist and I came to this restaurant. I had the beef and for dessert I had ice cream and whipped cream. Since I didn't know about Austrian culture, I asked the waiter what "Zum" meant in English. He took me to the kitchen to show how the chefs made the Zum. They were hard at work. They told me that they put a bit of Zum in every meal. It made my iced cream taste a lot better! I will be coming back to Austria for more!!! I love Zum!!! read more

For lunch on our way to a walking tour of the city. The portion sizes were good, service was fair. 1/2 of a Tafelspitz was plenty, and very tasty indeed. The Kummelbraten was also worth a shout. As we were eating, we saw the waiters pass with dishes for other tables that really looked wonderful - we'll have to stop in again next time we're in town. Ambience was lovely, hence the one star. My friend complained about my meal as she is a passionate foodie and was horrified. Wow. Leopold was chosen for me by a deeply committed man of Vienna as THE quintessential example of a Vienna restaurant. My god, it did not disappoint. This is a brief review of a 4 hour lunch. Wine list was deep. Of course, we had to do a Brundlmayer Grüner Veltliner after a couple glasses of Schwechater Zwickl bier (unfiltered all malt). Its Austria after all. My favorite soup was one the menu and it was the near best I've had - that being Hungarian Gulyassuppe - with lots of diced Vienna sausages. This and the near liter of beer and wine could of sufficed for lunch, but no, it was a celebration of sorts. I selected the Schweinsbrüstl, a Der klassische steirische Schweinebraten (traditional roast pork!). It came with stuffed dumplings. Yeah something so simple about roast pork in Austria - its so good. Crackling skin with very tender and rich meat. Desert! Ahhh Eismarillenknödel, gefüllt mit Marillensauce, gerollt in Haselnussbröseln! This is classic Vienna dish - a hazelnut crusted ice cream filled with Apricots. Tasting this you realize the Austrian have the highest level of Epicurean refinement. Done? No way. After a strong double espresso, its time to break out the Schnapps. After this point, things become even more loud, boisterous but pleasant nonetheless. Excellent Viennese cuisine, nice atmosphere, friendly service, two sections of outside seating, both smoking and non-smoking sections, and free Wi-Fi. Our first time we started with the gnocchi, which was different from the Italian gnocchi I'm used to, but nonetheless quite good. I had the steak of minced veal which was delicious and my wife had Wienerschnitzel which she enjoyed. Since then I've also eaten their Fiakergoulash, which is excellent. This place almost ruined our whole trip to Vienna. We went to the theater and expected to be able to get a late night eat near our hotel, but after trying three other places, this was the only one serving food at 10:45 on a Wednesday. Food and beer list were fine, but the food poisoning we received as an added bonus was miserable. We lost out on our tickets to the Musikverein, and our planned day trip to Budapest. We were stuck sick in our room for a full 24 hours, and even after 48 hours were not able to stomach much more than yogurt and crackers. We were still able to take in some of the sites, but had to cut down on walking and take more taxis than we prefer. All in all, this place turned into a $400 mistake with unused concert and train tickets, plus the loss of a precious day on our belated honeymoon trip to Europe. Avoid the same mistake! read more

Suggested by our check-in clerks on our late evening arrival as a restaurant serving traditional Austrian fare for a more local clientele and within a 5 minute walk, we jumped at the opportunity. How right he was. We were seated quickly even though the restaurant was very busy. The ambience was to more of a local neighborhood upscale bar/restaurant but serving great Austrian food. My wife and I had our first traditional wiener schnitzels which were 1/2 portions delicately breaded and served with a typical but excellent Austrian potato salad topped with rings of red onions. The pork was an excellent cut pounded out to perfection, topped with a squeeze of lemon, it was just the thing we needed for a late night supper. I had a draft lager and my wife a dark bottled Austrian beer that really complemented the meal. The waiters were very easy to work with and very personable. Food and drink were efficient and timely served. As was the chef who also doubled at the front of the house seating guests. It was really fun. So much so we returned on our last evening in Vienna for dinner where I enjoyed goose and spaetzle and my wife a full portion of schnitzel that was thoroughly enjoyed to the last bite. we will be returning. read more

This was the best meal of my trip to Europe (which included London, Vienna, Munich, and Dublin) - thank you once again Yelp, great to know I can count on you even when I'm traveling! Leupold serves traditional Viennese fare, with an upscale twist that isn't accompanied by the usual upscale price. This isn't to say it's cheap, but it's an incredible value for the culinary skill with which the food is prepared. We showed up with a group of 11, no reservations, and they were able to make room for us in the adorable outdoor courtyard, right off the street and perfect for people watching. Our server worked incredibly hard to provide fantastic service; just the constant orders for rounds of beer would have overwhelmed many other servers I've seen in the past. I ordered the Butterschnitzel, which is the steak of minced fried veal referenced by Dan C. It was incredible, and came with creamy whipped potatoes and a tangy salad. Nikki L. had the rump steak, which was drowning in a sauce that tasted like liquified garlic (YUM). The Wiener schnitzel that several others ordered was significantly better than the versions we had tried previously. The goulash was fantastic as well. The best part of the night, by far, was the first time we noticed how they serve water out in the courtyard... let me just say I really hope that they clean that fountain thoroughly every day! We went to this place blind one night, and we were very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant has an upscale, yet homey feel. It is very cozy. The staff spoke English, and they were generally nice, with the exception of one particularly rude waitress who practically told us to get lost, insisting that they were full, until another waiter came along and had us seated. They serve traditional Viennese and Hungarian dishes, cooked excellently. Everything, from soups, to main courses, to deserts, was absolutely delicious. Whether you're going as a couple or with a larger group, you can feel at home and enjoy a very tasty and filling meal here. The upscale appearance of the place and the quality of the food are reflected somewhat in the prices, but do not be alarmed, it is not much more expensive than other restaurants that do not bring the same kind of flavour to the table.
