While here on a business trip to Wien (Vienna), a colleague suggested this restaurant. He described it as a hidden gem off the beaten path. What an accurate description! It's roughly a 7 minute walk from the Pilgram-gasse stop on the U4 green line. It's definitely in a more residential area. We arrived around 730p and we're both greeted and seated quite immediately. I ordered a wine cocktail that had Muscato and grapes. It was just how I like it, sweet lol. Our server also brought out fresh and warm bread. It was served with this pink colored cream. The consistency resembled a whipped cream cheese. Very light and slightly sweet. I ordered the (Gebratene Entenbrust mit Waldpilz-Trüffel-Risotto, Parmesan, Rote - Bete - Sauce), which is a Roasted Duck, Wild Mushroom, Truffle and Parm Risotto, and a beet sauce. The duck was cooked and seasoned well, though it was close to being overdone. The risotto was to die for! I ate every single thing on the plate, including the sauce. I really wish I had ordered dessert because they had so many options; however, I felt sufficiently satisfied/full so I didn't order any. My colleagues ordered the salmon cream soup (I dipped a piece of bread in it and it was delectable! Very balanced curry flavor), the Norwegian salmon, and the braised beef cheeks. Made reservations but really didn't need them. I was the first and only person there and maybe a few other tables filled up, came on a Sat night. Service is outstanding. I got the duck as that's what everyone recommended. It's solid, not amazing, but solid. Check out the truffle side order I got (in the pic)! That was awesome. I've never seen actual truffle and he carved some pieces right on my duck which totally made it taste better. The beef tartare I got for the app was also solid though the soup was just ok. Recommended a great glass of Austrian wine that was full-bodied and left me a bit tipsy which I was really surprised at. Dessert was typical. If you're in Vienna, go here, no questions asked. Trust in me on this, and it'll be the best decision you could make. But first, make a reservation. Walk-ins are likely to be seated in their cellar, which unless you like that dungeon / war bunker atmosphere (actually.. pretty common with Vienna restaurants due to their history), you'll be waiting for awhile. To my Americans, there's a plenty of good reasons why this is the place to go: Food. Austrian wine. And, most astoundingly, service. I KNOW! Who knew you could find great service in Europe as they're not tip-centric. I would say that I've received the best service ever here, albeit in a different setting than say a traditional Michelin star restaurant or other high end establishments. It wasn't snooty, pretentious service, but genuine, down to earth, good quality discussions and recommendations. Although, to get the full experience, there's a secret - ask for the owner. He's typically always there, but will make time to converse with you, give you great food and local wine recommendations, and just strike up a great conversation about his life and experiences. Really great ambiance here. Oh, and the food? A+. It's fairly priced, portions are just right, and the GOULASH. AH! It could have been a bit more hearty with potatoes and meat, but the taste was the best I've had yet. Everything else was outstanding as well of course. FASCINATING Start to finish an exquisite experience. The food is well sourced, unique, well prepared and generally cooked to perfection. Bottom line up front...The service was outstanding our host was pleasant, knowledgeable, and friendly. He made outstanding suggestions from the menu. Very fairly priced , and it had a very pleasant atmosphere. Details below. My wife and I split the ribeye and the beef cheeks. My wife has a gluten allergy and while all the items on the menu have gluten we were pleasantly surprised when we were told that our meals could be prepared gluten free. Additionally we he appetizers I got the calamari which was the best calamari I have ever had! Not caked in battery or over fried it was excellent. My wife had the goat cheese salad with walnuts which favors absolutely complimented each other. The wine pairing was also wonderful. This restaurant ONLY serves Hungarian wines. So if you are looking for an assortment of vino. Not your place. Being a foodie when I travel I don't mind stuff like that. The wines were paired very well with our dishes. On our way out our excellent service continued as we were assisted with putting our coats on by the bartender. Great food great role great place. We came here for dinner on Xmas eve, and boy is this place atrocious. The poor and slow service was due to the restaurant being full house, but if a restaurant can't perform during full house decently, it probably should reduce its capacity. We were seated in the underground cellar for our dinner. Because it was a special dinner, there was a fixed set menu so we didn't have a lot of choices to choose from. I got the tartare, fish soup, lamb and cheesecake. The fish soup was god awful. It was overly fishy and the time in between courses ranged from 30-45 minutes. I did like my lamb because they were generous, but with Christmas Eve prices, they really ought to be. My cheesecake was nothing to shout about. They supposedly serve Hungarian food, and given we were going to Budapest the next day, I was quite horrified that Hungarian food was along the lines of the food from this place. I might not have tried all the restaurants in Vienna but I'm fairly confident this is one of the best restaurants in the place. First of all, the staff is incredibly friendly. If you're lucky enough to get Attila as your host, your dinner will be a success. He speaks perfect German and English, and when he realized we were from Montréal, he switched to French. It was a great surprise to us. He really made sure everything was going to be perfect, and it was. Then the food. Everything is OUT OF THIS WORLD. The onion soup, the risotto with duck meat, the risotto with lamb, the desserts, the cocktails. We were constantly exchanging forks and trying each other's food. This restaurant is an experience. Mistake number one, we accepted a reservation for 6:00. We ordered two cocktails and a starter, the calamari. They immediately wanted our main course order, I told them I would want salads, or the first course. Upon finishing our cocktails the main courses, duck breast in beet sauce, and chickenpaprikish were placed in front of us. They had no intentions of letting us have our first course. The 6-7:00 hour is their time to set up and answer trip advisor reviews. They were still moving chairs around. Two of them hovered over the computer next to our table reading and replying to trip advisor reviews!! If you go, only go for the regular seatings after 7:00pm. We were completely hurried. A couple days' time in Vienna is not enough to enjoy as much food as you'd like, but we were thrilled that we were able to squeeze in a meal here - it handily beat all of the schnitzel and sacher torte that we had. The atmosphere is cozy and sophisticated, with smooth jazz playing lightly in the background. The service alone warrants a visit here. Our server was friendly, engaging, and had some awesome suggestions as we were unfamiliar with traditional Hungarian cuisine. I started out with the Fresh Garden cocktail as an aperitif, and it was delightfully refreshing. Their drink and wine list is quite impressive, and each recommendation we were given was spot on. I went with the Filet Mignon Budapest style with green peas, mushroom ragout, foie gras and potato chips (these were like cross-cut fries in the States). My dining companion had the grilled dorade with fried pesto-risotto, pock choi and puttanesca sauce, which he promptly declared amazing. The Hungarian bread is one of my favorite staples of their cuisine - it's incredibly light and fluffy, and pairs so well with the meats and sauces that you can't help but feel like you need to leave the place in a wheelbarrow. Discovered on Yelp after several random and bad customer experiences, this place was a real breath of fresh air. In my 6 days in vienna I came here for 3 meals! I told our waiter he was the best customer service in Vienna I have experienced, of course I wasn't surprised to hear he was from Budapest! Food: 5* (for Vienna standards) - not quite to one michelin star standards, but reaching for it, the only thing left would be a million dollar location and a dedicated dessert chef Service: 5* (even by New York standards) - props to the very helpful Hungarian waiter Location/Place: 3.5* (Safe- off a main road, but entrance on side street, interior is modern and clean but not extravagant, small inner atrium patio for smokers, no views, interior design clean, modern, interesting but nothing outstanding). Hungarian Restauranteur Sandor Novak, who is NY trained for a decade with some top chefs, manages this little gem. English is spoken as a second language. Highlights of my 3 meals: Elderberry lemonades (really any of them) was excellent and stuffed with slices of lemon, lime (and maybe mint)? Lunch menu was 3 courses and I think about 10 euros, totally worth it. Spagetti with mussels were delicious - the wine used to saute them was so good. Key lime pie - yes I had good old American key(?) lime pie here it was fabulous Swordfish carpaccio- this was a first for me and it was really good Fried Calarmari - lightly breaded, darkly fried, sauce delicious, excellent aperitif, portion could be a bit larger Lamb shank confit - delicious with sauce I would highly recommend Duck with beet sauce- tasty, perfect pairing with suggested red wine, could be a bit more tender, but the portion was nice Plum dumplings with vanilla white sauce in martini glass- an interesting take on a local dessert, not my favorite, I'd still take a dense dark chocolate cake instead, but it was good. I've uploaded pictures of dishes we ate. To recap: This is a highly recommended excellent nuevo-european (with high quality NY-style 'french' presentation) in a reasonable location with top notch service by NY standards (and a kilometer above the rest of Vienna's standards) which will not disappoint. I would not give this restaurant 2-Euros for price but more like 2.5-3 euro designations. Expect to pay 10-15 euros per person for a lunch, and 20-35 for dinner not including wine. read more

Probably the best service I have ever had in Vienna! So friendly, so careful, so helpful! Class act from the entire staff on both of my visits! My first visit was a group 8-course meal and wine night and my second was a date night with the hubby. Perfect location for both kinds of events! The menu changes with the season and is elegant yet appriachable and offers just the right amount of hungarian flair. We loved our calamari lendensalad aappetizers and lamb entrees. I've been Yelp-silent for years, just observing other people's reviews and recommendations. But I could be silent no longer after eating at Mini. Holy cow, this place is amazing. My mom and I arrived at their door around 7:30 on a Friday night. It's raining. Everything is packed. I though without a reservation, we were screwed. I was wrong. They sat us right away, and the waiter walked us through the chef's favorites. Everything looked so good, so my mom and I went to town. She got some expertly-done calamari while I opted for the goat cheese salad. No offense to you seafood lovers out there, but the goat cheese salad was enough to make my night. The cheese was slightly crisp on the outside, and melty on the inside...I still think about it. Then there was the entree. I had the rack of lamb which was cooked to perfection. It was tender, but it wasn't too textured, and it was cooked in this set of herbs that really brought out he flavor. And it was served in a vegetable purée that totally complemented the dish. I'd been eating bread and fruit for days, so a dish with vegetables was more than welcomed. The service was also impeccable. It seems to be a mostly Hungarian/slavic staff (I believe most of the dishes on the menu were Hungarian), but they know German and English, and are incredibly friendly. We ordered a wine they were out of, and the waiter had several other recommendations. We felt well taken care of. This is a break from your everyday Viennese restaurant, and it's not too far from Old Town. Trust me tourists, it's worth the walk. read more

One of the best meals we had in Austria. The food an wine list is almost exclusively Hungarian and that was fine with us. My wife and I knew very little about Hungary food outside of Goulash and we knew even less about Hungarian wine. The waiter explained any questions we had on the menu. We ordered the grilled goat cheese salad as an appetizer which was an excellent start if you like goat cheese. I had the Chickenpaprikash with Egg Spatzle and my wife had the roasted duck breast with wild mushroom risotto and beet root sauce. They are both highly recommended. My Chickenpaprikash had such complex and great flavors. The duck was cooked perfectly and the beet root sauce was sublime. When it came to the wine selection, we left everything in the very capable hands of our waiter. He chose each wine to pair with what we were eating and he was perfect each time. It was a very memorable meal and considering we had an appetizer, 2 entrees, 6 glasses of wine, and dessert for only 79Euro, we felt that was a pretty good deal for the normal sticker shock we were experiencing in Vienna. In fact, this was the only restaurant we returned to just for drinks and dessert and, as we experienced the first time, the food, drinks, and service were impeccable. Took my parents and boyfriend here for our first family dinner in Vienna during our vacation, and we were received by some of the best services in the world. The staff was attentive, took our coats, switched our plates and silverware 4 times, suggested wine pairings that complemented each meal, and called a taxi for us. They spoke perfect English and made a few appropriate jokes to put us in the right mood. For the food, we ordered the the calamari, duck, chicken paprikash, pork shoulder and salmon trout. Excellent. Although I like to provide the rating based on food alone, it is definitely worth mentioning that Mini has by far the best customer service of any restaurant in Vienna. The wait staff is amazing - not only knowledgeable of food items, but tri-lingual as all of them speak English as a second language, beside German and Hungarian. Every Austrian restaurant owner or manager should come here to see how it's done - wine pairings and tastings, cocktails and food recommendations, etc. The food is also very good to exceptional. Here is what we had: - Steak Budapest style - very good, cooked perfectly to medium rare with a tomato based sauce with a slight kick. - Salmon - the best in Vienna with a creamy coconut sauce. Wow! - Chicken stuffed with goat cheese - very good. - Fried calamari - not only the best in Vienna, but the best I ever had in my life. Melt in your mouth with two home-made aiolis. - Duck breast - great! - Home-made bread with duck pâté - exquisite! - Hungarian wines - just great. What a breath of fresh air compared to the boring selection of Austrian wines available elsewhere. WANTED: A non-traditional (aka no Wiener Schnitzel), well-liked by many, not too expensive, good service, great food, and elegant restaurant. It seemed like too much of me to ask for such place, but Mini hit the spot! Upon reading many good reviews from various sources (well-liked by many? check!), we decided to make a reservation via their website, 3 days in advance, for a table for 2 for Friday at 7 PM. After I completed the reservation form and received the usual "Thank you for your reservation" message on their site, I received no further emails. Hmmm...a bit suspicious since one usually would get a confirmation email or so. When we went there for our reservation, my suspicion was confirmed as they had no record of my reservation (FYI, I know how to make online reservations for restaurants, so this mishap is not due to my abilities of using the computer...). However, the staff was accommodating to cater the 2 of us and readily gave us a table. Contrary to its name, Mini is not so mini. There are enough tables and a bar to hold at least 20 people or so. The ambience is cozy and the decor, I would say, is elegant (check!). Our server (either the owner or manager) spoke articulate English and German and was quite friendly, making recommendations and describing the daily dishes. He even asked us if we would like a glass of water after our meal (a rarity to get free water in restaurants around here). The rest of the service was on par, so no complaints there (good service? I deem it so...). For the 2 of us, we had the following menu: * Drinks: (1) Their cocktail-of-the-day "Avalon" (refreshing with lime and cucumber). (2) Homemade mango-flavored lemonade with pineapple. It was advertised to come with lychee instead of pineapple, but they ran out of lychee, darn! But pineapple was a good substitute, so it was a great drink. They have a lot of other homemade lemonades. I would have tried them all, but a girl must eat! * Appetizers: (1) Fried calamari with Manchego and Aioli dips -- one of the best fried calamari (if it must be fried...) that I've ever eaten. The crust was super light yet crispy, and the calamari rings were big. The dips were great as well. (2) White tomato soup with shrimp -- Not your ordinary tomato soup, it was tasty with its thick consistency and texture. The shrimp (note: 1 shrimp) was ok. * Entree: (1) Salmon filet with red curry sauce served with Papadam -- Nicely cooked fish. Interesting combination with the curry; not too overpowering of a sauce. The papadam was a delight! (2) Roasted duck breast with wild mushroom risotto and red beet sauce -- It was highly recommended by our server. Also everything was nicely cooked and went well together. Desserts: Chocolate souffle (Schockoladenauflauf) with chili and sour cherry ice cream -- I wouldn't perceive these three parts to fit well together, but surprisingly it does. The chili was quite subtle (which was fine with me), and the ice cream was not sour (also fine with me!). Overall, a great end to the entire meal. (Great food? Check!) I wrote so much about dinner that one would think this meal with drinks and 3 courses must cost over 80 EUR. Absolutely not! Everything came up to about 60 EUR! (Not too expensive? My friends and I had the pleasure of discovering Mini earlier this week; the restaurant is indeed small in size but it offers big and delightful taste! The owner (fluent in several languages, including English) was eager to showcase the wonderful wines and beverages...he offered mini tastes of any by-the-glass choice of wine before we had to commit. The menu includes some traditional Austrian and Hungarian dishes and some with a hint of New World. Everything we ordered--from soups and salads to entrees and desserts--was splendid. Mini is already picking up a steady stream of local customers, some of whom arrive with their well-behaved dogs (a custom that I wish was permitted in the U.S.). I guess I can see why this place is so popular. Slightly upscale, yet not snobby (especially on the phone, they are always very accommodating) and the way one is treated in some ways reminds of restaurants that charge twice as much or even more. That said, it's obviously not cheap. Even just a main course, desert and water will run you 25-30€. But the difference to at least some other upscale places is that the serving sizes are relatively normal (but the presentation still similarly appealing, as you can see in the many photos that have already been uploaded). So I was full after what I just described. Granted, I didn't starve myself all day long like people usually seem to. The main course I had was one of the most exquisite things I've ever had. It was the first time that it happened to me that instead of either just that fullness feeling setting in or the spices becoming a bit overwhelming, that the more I ate, the more I enjoyed the taste. Although that could've been because in the beginning I ate my chicken with the chestnut sauce it came with which I felt didn't really match. Then I started to not eat the sauce and it tasted a lot better. But... like I said... aside from that sauce - stunning. The stuffed chicken as well as the lingonberry rice and the pumpkin strudel. The desert, I wasn't as crazy about. It was sort of a lime cheese cake with passion fruit puree. It was alright overall but I didn't appreciate the slightly bitter aftertaste it had. Which may have been due to the nuts in the base of the cake. Overall, I'd definitely go again but still won't give it a perfect rating due to the minor things with the food I already mentioned. I just feel like I can't be the only one finding that chestnut sauce in combination with those other elements to be an unwise idea that someone should've picked up on. Plus, the plastic or paper (wasn't sure and didn't want to try tearing it) table cloths offended my eyes. ;) Seriously, the rest of the interior looks great (and the leather chairs are really comfy!), everything blends very well and then you have those green things... it seems like an unnecessary aesthetic error to me that can be easily corrected. read more

The food was beautifully prepared and there was quite a selection of Hungarian wines. Fish in coconut milk and duck entrees were both delicious... duck preparation made it look a bit scary and bloody because of the pomegranate sauce...but I was definitely more than satisfied. so glad that this restaurant showed up on yelp because of it's proximity to our hotel - the service, food and atmosphere were near perfect. we started out with a calamari appetizer that was perfectly fried - well actually we started out with this bread that came with buttery pâté (this was amazing). for entrees we has the venison special coated in crushed pistachios and a roasted chicken served with spaetzle and gravy. they have an excellent wine selection - many from austria and hungary. both the white and red the waiter suggested were super and reasonably priced. this was our very first meal in vienna and it definitely set the bar. would go back if we ever had the chance! read more

A three and a half experience: I give mini 4 stars instead of 3 because they gave us a complimentary appetizer of bread and a duck crumble (can't quite recall what it was) that was delicious. Our meals however were fairly average- I ordered the red Thai salmon which was okay- I didn't see any red Thai curry anywhere on the plate instead it was covered in a creamy sauce which was not at all anything like curry however it was ok/satisfactory (the proportions on this dish I felt to be a little subpar). My mom got the specialty of the day pork chops and a sundries risotto- she liked the risotto, but was unimpressed by the pork chops and hardly touched them. Drink options are plentiful and creative, but the food has mixed reviews. While the goat cheese salad was a solid option others were simply mediocre. The duck dish is by far the most popular. The duck was delicious and prepared well but the risotto was not cooked and ultimately tasted like hard, soupy rice mixed with chunks of mushroom. I ordered an off menu dish - cod with marscapone, tomato and bok choy with couscous and grilled zucchini. The dish arrived cold and the couscous was mixed with red pepper. Had I known that prior to ordering I would have skipped. They simply reheated my fish rather than making it over, which meant my fish was over cooked and inedible. Terribly disappointing. The saving grace was a delicious chocolate soufflé which claimed to have a hint of chili. It was served with a tart cherry sorbet. While we didn't detect the chili, the dessert was superb. I am not sure where all these great reviews are coming from. This is a very average restaurant. Service is excellent. Ambience and food just average. Only one person in our group of six enjoyed their meal.I honestly thought prices were high for the quality of food we had. Mini is a nice cute place, a little out of the way. The server that we had was very knowledgeable about the wine list and gave us samples of several wines and nice recommendations based on our food. For a starter I had the warm goat cheese salad which was delicious. For dinner my husband got the chef recommended sirloin with goat cheese and pumpkin quinoa, and I had the roasted duck breast with mushroom risotto. My husbands was excellent! I was super jealous. My duck breast was cooked perfect but it didn't have any flavor, and the beautiful pink/red sauce it was in had no flavor either. The risotto was seasoned and cooked perfectly, unfortunately for me I think it had shitake mushrooms in it, which I can't stand! But that is definitely not their fault, it is a taste thing. It was also roasting hot in the restaurant, we were in such a hurry to leave because it was so hot, which I a sure jaded our experience. Can't remember the exact time i've been here but regardless of when it has been, i could never forget the experience! The service was great, the waiter recommended their specialties and i asked him to surprise me with any drink and it was really good! The ambiance was just perfect. The place isn't that big so i'd suggest to make a reservation to be sure to get a table. It is easily accessible with the public transportation.
