With such a history and unique name, we had to try the place. I made the reservation a day before we arrived to Vienna, but we ended up going there early and they seated us without any issues. The food was good, got the veal schnitzel, regular schnitzel, their version of mac-n-cheese and few side items. This was my first time trying veal schnitzel and one of the themes that I've noticed is that, the batter doesn't stick to the meat. It kept falling apart and exposing the meat, happened here and few other restaurants. I just don't get why this is the case, but I wish they do a better job of using the batter and how it sticks to the meat. Of all the dishes, I liked the mac-n-cheese, it was perfectly seasoned and we all enjoyed the dish. Their goulash was the best of all the goulash's that we tried and would recommend it. Make sure you get beer to wash down your meals :) The service was great, the waiter was on top of his game, we loved the interior of the restaurant, felt like we were dining in a castle. When it comes to service, starting with the reservation I tried to make online that was never answered or completed. The server was apologetic but we found him as pushy as an American car salesman. He was quick to offer things like a cheese appetizer and I said yes. He brought 2 and charged accordingly. Shady! The food, well it's german, so nothing to rave about. Is this a tourist trap? Probably, but frankly some of the best places to visit are. I travel frequently to Vienna for business and always bring my coworkers here if it's their first time in Austria. The restaurant is situated in an old vault that dates back to the 1300's. The restaurantors are very proud of the restaurant's history and encourage people to look around. Waitstaff are always helpful and extremely friendly. They have an extensive wine list and offer various Austrian wines as well as their own signature wine. They frequently have musicians which stroll through the dining areas. It's is somewhat drafty and musty? Well, ya.. you're in a cellar that dates back hundreds of years ago. The menu is traditional Austrian. My coworkers frequently purchase the 12a house platter which is a variety of Austrian dishes. The menu states it is for 2 people and truly, it is. I frequently order the goulash or the meat and greave dumpling's and have never been disappointed. The food is always presented well and tastes good. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. No, it is not a Michelin star restaurant. Yet people come here for the atmosphere, wonderful waitstaff and to try no frills Austrian food. I always see plenty of locals at the establishment as well as tourists. I will be back in VIE next month and will be taking more coworkers there. read more

High recommend for some good Viennese food! This was my first time trying eiernockerl and it has now become my favorite food in Vienna. The schnitzel was also very good and the atmosphere is very unique. A total tourist trap. I understand it's considered an institution in Vienna and it's in a basement but can't you find a way to air out that place? Couldn't loose that vinegar like taste from my senses for a long time. When we arrived there after a long stroll through bitter cold Vienna I was in the mood for a traditional Schnitzel but at first I was unsure if I would get one then first all the empty table had a reservation sign on it ... and were still empty when we left. To preface this review, Me and my fiancé booked a reservation 1 month in advance and decided to travel specifically to Vienna from out of the country to visit this restaurant because of the beautiful architecture and its rich history. We can confidently not recommend this restaurant as this place wasted over 2.5 hours of our time and we are now down the street at McDonalds to get dinner. Our experience: Upon arriving 5 minutes early, we were rudely informed there were no tables and were pointed to the door. We let the staff know we had a reservation, and were seated 10 minutes later. It took 45 minutes for our server to come and take our drink orders. One hour in, we received our bottle of wine and water. We then placed our appetizer order when our wine was served. Realizing at this point that things were moving slowly, we asked our server if we could place our main orders. He insisted that we take our time and enjoy our night, initiating that we place our main course order later. After 20 minutes (1 hr 20 min total) we attempted to get his attention to place our order for our main course, but were unable to get his attention. An hour and 40 minutes into our initial seating, we received our appetizer (which was incorrect - was supposed to be 4 cheeses and we only received 3). Two hours after we were seated we were finally able to get our servers attention and attempted to order our mains, which he responded with we only had an hour to finish. After 20 minutes our waiter finally came back to notify us our order could not be filled because the kitchen could not make one of the dishes. At this point it had been over two hours and all we had eaten was some thin slices of cheese. Needless to say we were starving and just wanted to leave and find somewhere to eat some actual food. Two of the tables around us at this point also commented on how slow the service was, and expressed that they felt lucky to have gotten a meal at all. After indicating we wanted to leave, we asked for the bill which included a bottle of water and a bottle of wine. We waited another 15 minutes before we could pay. Our appetizer ended up being compensated but it didn't make up for the fact that we were there for almost 3 hours and did not receive a proper meal, and are now writing this review from a McDonald's down the street. The only benefit this place has is the nice atmosphere. Overall, I've never been somewhere with worse serve and I am a frequent traveller. TLDR: service is atrocious and you're going to wait hours for a meal if you're lucky enough to get one at all. Cannot comment on the food quality. read more

Yes this is a touristy place, but hey they have live music and it is in a cool underground cave like hole in the ground. Zwolf was an awesome place to come as a native or a tourist. My mom and I came here on our first day in Vienna, and we were greeted by live music and a particularly enthusiastic waiter. (We promptly asked for the English menu.) We got delectable Vienese food -- seemingly simplistic but hearty and delicious. Their house cider was also very good. I love the cozy feel of this place, and you can tell it has a lot of history. It was a great introduction to the Vienna dining scene. A high recommend! read more

Had dinner in an 800-year-old cave before? Now's your chance. The atmosphere inside this restaurant is nothing short of spectacular. It is stated that the place was built almost 900 years ago and in addition to that there is a live band playing which really makes the atmosphere fun and exciting. The service was very prompt and helpful. They even had an English card which helps for us English-speaking tourists. Just about everything we got during dinner was very good. The schnitzel even beat out the neighboring Figlmüller, in my opinion. I actually had the vegetarian strudel which was sort of like a vegetarian lasagna. In addition we ordered sides of fried potatoes, dumplings, and garlic toast. Even though this place is set up as a tourist destination it doesn't take away from having a nice evening. This place is a must! Traditional Austrian food in a traditional Austrian atmosphere. The restaurant is in a 600 year old cellar so you can imagine how amazing it looks inside. It's a really nice place to enjoy some good food and beer with friends. Although slightly touristy, I would still recommend this place for a tasty, hearty Austrian meal. They serve most of the traditional dishes for a decent price. The waiting staff are friendly and accommodating. Overall, a very good experience! This restaurant is apparently from the 1300's. I think that should be enough to make you go there, but if it helps, the food also happens to be pretty good. Not the cheapest place, but an excellent atmosphere. You are eating in an old cellar with 30-foot ceilings and stone walls. They specialize in Schnitzel and Roast Pork... as does every traditional Eastern European restaurant. I ordered the goulash - another Eastern European specialty. Price: $13 euros. It was a very tasty goulash, with tender beef, butterflied sausages, and potato pancakes, covered in a light layer of sauce. Figlmüller across the road was a lot busier, so I am assuming that the food is better there. Although Figlmuller is from 1905 and Zwolf from the 1300's... Definitely worth visiting both if possible. read more

Throughout the meal you may or may not be serenaded by musicians at your table. And, if you come around 6pm, just before the large crowd, your waiter will be exceptionally attentive (he memorizes everything) and the food comes out very quickly. Wine This (non-traditional) Heuriger (Eastern-Austrian wine-taverns where this year's most recent wine is served) does it right. One glass of wine and I promise you will be wanting more and will be in a content state of mind as the alcohol percentage is quite high. For white I recommend the Spätlese (it's light and has a bit of a fizz), and for red I would go with the St. Laurent, dry and earthy. And if you are a diabetic, they've got a wine in mind for you too. Entrees -Käsespätzle mit grünem Salat: one of the best Käsespätzle I've had. Seriously. Made with an egg, you can truly taste the creaminess of the fresh eggs available here in Austria. It mixes nicely with the sharp cheese they use and unlike others, it's actually quite cheesy. But you must like egg if you want to enjoy this dish, as the egg's flavor really comes through. The fried onions atop: thank you. And the accompanying salad is fresh and slathered in awonderful oil that is both tangy and sweet. -Schweinsbraten mi Serviettenknödel & Speckkrautsalat (pork roast with bread dumpling cooked in a napkin & bacon atop cooked (cold) cabbage): I was a bit underwhelmed by the Schweinsbraten. Although the meat was cooked well, nothing about the juice/sauce was amazing and I think at least for my taste the meat was cooked for too long so it lacked a bit of flavoring. The Serviettenknödel were nicely bland and hearty (as they should be), and the Kraut with bacon was not overly bitter or tangy. Not too much of a fan of Kraut, it was a bit refreshing with the salty bacon atop. FINAL VERDICT: The wine and the spätzle I will be returning for. read more

Husband and I found this cozy wine cellar for lunch in our Frommer's Guide. It wasn't too busy during the day, but considering the atmosphere, I could see it being busy at night. We ended up sharing the Hot Haus Plate for two. The food was more than enough for us (still had plenty of leftovers!). It was meat galore including: smoked ham, tender and fatty roast beef, silky and rich blood sausage, meat stuffed potato dumplings, along with your average frankfurters. Underneath the mix was a bed of sour, brothy sauerkraut as an appropriate complement. To go with our heavy meal, we ordered half liters of Hefe, which I know is probably a sin in a wine cellar, but we couldn't help it! - It felt like a more fitting drink to such a giant, informal meal. The issues we had were minor compared to other European dining experiences - Although there were not many guests, there was only one server during lunch, which left our service a bit chaotic. (ie. The 12 apostles cellar is a slightly touristy hangout with live music every night. It is in a cellar with barrel vaulted ceilings and the place dates from the 1300s. The food is ok, nothing amazing (had the smoked pork and frankfurts but the schnitzels looked amazing), the waiters reasonably friendly, but the atmosphere and music are the main drawcards. It's close to public transport or walking from central Vienna (5 minutes walk north from Stephansplatz). read more

5 stars for proving how wrong first impressions can be. We first arrived to an empty restaurant with tacky decor and two sleeping musicians. We were quickly greeted by a kind and hospitable host, and the wonderful music began. The red house wine was excellent, as was the food. Quickly the musicians caught our eye and came to our table. Although clearly seeking a tip, they were charming and funny. A wonderful Viennese experience. Although one could easily misconstrue it as a contrived, touristic place on first glance, there is clearly genuine passion and tradition at its core. read more
