Cabbage bacon salad

With such a history and unique name, we had to try the place. I made the reservation a day before we arrived to Vienna, but we ended up going there early and they seated us without any issues. The food was good, got the veal schnitzel, regular schnitzel, their version of mac-n-cheese and few side items. This was my first time trying veal schnitzel and one of the themes that I've noticed is that, the batter doesn't stick to the meat. It kept falling apart and exposing the meat, happened here and few other restaurants. I just don't get why this is the case, but I wish they do a better job of using the batter and how it sticks to the meat. Of all the dishes, I liked the mac-n-cheese, it was perfectly seasoned and we all enjoyed the dish. Their goulash was the best of all the goulash's that we tried and would recommend it. Make sure you get beer to wash down your meals :) The service was great, the waiter was on top of his game, we loved the interior of the restaurant, felt like we were dining in a castle. Recommend you make a reservation. I made it after 5pm and got an email response the next morning - if they email you, that's your confirmation of your reservation :)

Loved the history of the restaurant and the atmosphere Great Austrian food - we cleaned out plates! No ice cuz the restaurant is so old Got the roast pork with dumplings: 4 stars, the pork was super succulent Everyone liked their meals, except for the potato salad (skip this) Would come back! Come here for the location and the historical relevance, but not for the food and service. When it comes to service, starting with the reservation I tried to make online that was never answered or completed. The server was apologetic but we found him as pushy as an American car salesman. He was quick to offer things like a cheese appetizer and I said yes. He brought 2 and charged accordingly. Shady! The food, well it's german, so nothing to rave about. But ok, maybe they want to showcase dishes of the middle ages to go with the ambiance.

Nice restaurant in a building since 1100s . Super nice ambiance and touristy attraction. Their food is also great and the best option is their A12 house platter

Eiernockerl

High recommend for some good Viennese food! This was my first time trying eiernockerl and it has now become my favorite food in Vienna. The schnitzel was also very good and the atmosphere is very unique. Unlike most places in Vienna, the waiters are nice and there is a mini band that comes around to provide entertainment during your meal.

A total tourist trap. I understand it's considered an institution in Vienna and it's in a basement but can't you find a way to air out that place? Couldn't loose that vinegar like taste from my senses for a long time. When we arrived there after a long stroll through bitter cold Vienna I was in the mood for a traditional Schnitzel but at first I was unsure if I would get one then first all the empty table had a reservation sign on it ... and were still empty when we left. It took the waiter extremely long to pay attention to us. Maybe I'm used to much of American standards but hey, 15 minutes to ask us what to drink in a, as I mentioned almost empty place? My wife had some Gulasch, which was quiet ok. My self had a Wienerschnitzel, it was awful. Took the waiter another lifetime to bring the check. The second star is for the very unique ambient and the local beer I had.

Festive atmosphere

Great tourist attraction. Live music in the form of a passionate violinist and accordionist who visit every table. Be sure to tip them since they work so hard for their money. The veal schnitzel and boiled potato was delicious and could feed two people. They also have authentic dishes such as sliced pork tongue. An extensive Austrian wine list. Festive wine cellar atmosphere that is perfect for big groups. Attentive customer service.

Nice underground Restaurant with typical Austrian cuisine. Take a mixed plate to try various austrian dishes.

The moment we clarified we weren't together and I brought in my Brown boyfriend, the host seemed visibly perplexed, and the tone shifted. Throughout the evening, we were denied a simple wine tasting, then largely ignored, which left us with a strong impression of biased, discriminatory treatment. To make matters worse, staff repeatedly emphasized the price of everything, which came off as patronizing and inappropriate regardless of anyone's background or perceived status. This experience felt xenophobic and racist, and it was frankly vile--there are far too many restaurants in Austria to support one that treats guests this way. As two physicians who take care of people in their darkest hours, it felt incredibly degrading to be treated this way when we were simply trying to enjoy an evening away from the stress of our daily careers. I would hope that the owners of this establishment would take a hard look at the standards set for their employees and management practices going forward to create a safe atmosphere where all connoisseurs can gather and vibe even in just a moment of peace from the day-to-day hardships we can all certainly relate to. Shameful behavior indeed. Pity, as the ambience and wine selection was delicious but tainted by the ugly reminder of bigotry.

Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience.
