So tasty!
After hours, literally hours, of walking to and around Belvedere, myself, my husband, and my sister were in need of some food. Gasthaus Herlitschaka was fairly close and the pictures looked tasty, and since it was on the way to the metro, we made our way to it.
We were seated immediately and they had menus in English. Our server's own English was somewhat halting, but we eventually had some regional and German beers recommended to our tastes and they were incredible! We all sipped and hummed with delight, because for myself and my husband we'd been in wine country for weeks, and my sister had been living in wine country for months (no complaints, mind you, just sayin') and it was wonderful to have some hearty, real bier to sip with dinner. It was then that we realized all but one table around us had 'reserved' table cards on them. We then realized we totally scored by getting here when we did!
Myself, I ordered fried mushrooms. That just sounded really, really good after walking miles upon miles that day. My sister ordered schnitzel with German potato salad, and my husband ordered cornbreaded fried trout with creamy potato salad.
Let me give you a touch of our history: the three of us are from Missouri, the Midwestern section of the United States. It wasn't until I moved to New York 6 years ago that I discovered the names that I thought were as American as apple pie were actually German names. That meant the foods that I thought were also as American as apple pie are also German in their most basic form.
Our food tasted like what our souls were craving. Fried? Yes. Sorry. We're midwestern, and apparently that's how midwesterners do. My husband almost got a knot in his throat because his fried fish tasted exactly as his late grandmother made it when we was a boy and it brought back so many good memories. The potato salads were incredible: vinegary in one version, and delicious flavors in a creamy texture in another. The schnitzel was pounded thin and cooked perfectly. The mushrooms were awesome little bursts of flavor in my mouth. Everything was so good!
We paid and left as the reserved tables began to trickle in, because while we were dressed quite well for backpackers (we made efforts to be somewhat fashionable as we wandered Europe), it might have been better not to be caught wearing jeans by so many patrons. I would totally recommend and go back to Gasthaus Herlitschka! It was so good and the servers were wonderful! A little on the more expensive side, but for the experience and understanding of where our 'native' food comes from, absolutely worth every penny! read more
