We decided we wanted to add a water lily plant to our koi pond to provide shade for our fish. We had been to Dickson Brothers many years ago and decided to check out what they had. We were babysitting our 3 grandchildren for the weekend so they had a blast checking out the pond display and yard decor inside. The pond display has a few fish but the highlight was watching the turtle! We went outside and saw all the baby fish in the tanks and lots of pond and bog plants to choose from. We saw Sid who was working outside and we had a few questions for him. Sid was great! He was very helpful and kind, answered all of our questions and even offered up some suggestions! After we chose the plant we wanted, he carefully wrapped it up for the trip home. He made sure to tell us how to fertilize the plant and we bought some tablets to use in the future. By the end of the summer our pool was in bad shape. Our 15 year old single speed pump and cartridge filter were spent. Both had air leaks, the pump was noisy and we were constantly having to take out the filter cartridges to remove the green slime (algae). Our electric bills were up there and we were spending a fortune on chlorine. At the end of the day, we were waisting a lot money on a green pool. Being a handy guy and having worked in the swimming pool construction business many years ago, I visited Dickson Brothers and began inquiring about patching up my old system as compared to replacing the essential components, pump and filter. "Travis," a pool service technician at Dickson Brothers squared me away with options, price lists, and overall advise on modern day pool repair. Travis really knows pools and pool repair! I compared the prices with other other pool suppliers and found that Dickson Brother's was about $200 to $300 less for the pump (variable speed) and filter and the pre-filter was about the same. I decided I was going to take on the actual work of replacing my old pump station pad and pouring a new pad, and replacing all the major components, valves and pipes, including electrical connections. I can't say the job was easy but with Travis' guidance it went smoothly. I don't think I had to bug him too much but when I did, he was always available and provided great info on getting this project done. He even answered his phone while on vacation....unbelievable! I have nothing but good things to say about Dickson Brothers, Travis, and the rest of their staff in getting our pool back to a sparkling clear water situation. The new pump is quiet, powerful, and highly efficient and the pre filter really takes care of a lot of the dirt and debris before it gets to the big filter. I have a feeling we're going to spend a lot less time cleaning filter cartridges as compared to enjoying our pool! Whether you can do the actual repair work yourself or whether you'll need someone to fix your pool for you, I would certainly consider talking to Travis (or anyone else) at Dickson Brothers. read more

There is no doubt Dickson Brothers is a valuable asset to Mesquite and the surrounding community. They know pools and ponds and their inventory is extensive. Mesquite is lucky to have them. And not sure why it lists my location as "San Francisco", it's Mesquite. That being said, I want to talk about customer service. They have some work to do in that space and I base that off of my experiences with them the in just the last year. Disclosure: I am a customer of theirs for over 10 years now. I have given them 4 stars because I hope they can fix this problem. Specifically, EVERY communication with a customer, phone and face to face, has to be professional and should strive for exceptionalism. My husband and I inherited a koi pond when we purchased our new home. We had no idea that there were fish in the pond since the prior owner had already moved to Brazil and never mentioned them or how to care for the pond. We knew nothing about taking care of such a large koi pond or fish, so we started looking into companies that could help us maintain it. My husband ran across Dickinson Brothers and decided to have them come out to access the condition of the pond. A few weeks ago, Francisco and his crew came out to clean our pond. It was a large undertaking that required a couple of days of draining and scrubbing. We paid $2,500 for the service and agreed to have the company come out every couple of weeks to maintain the pond. Our first red flag should have been when they charged us $800 extra for organizing the plants. They never informed us what the charge would be until after it was done. We definitely should have asked before agreeing, but we thought they would have at least given us a price before they took it upon themselves to do it, especially when it's an additional $800. We let that slide and didn't mention it because we really needed a pond company and didn't feel like searching for another one. Also, my husband was pleased because the owner, Alan, knew that we knew nothing about caring for the koi pond and said we could call him anytime we had a question about anything. That put our mind at ease because we knew we would have a lot of questions as time went on. Cut to the unprecedented freeze Dallas recently experienced. Days before the storm hit, my husband called Alan about what we needed to do to ensure the fish would be OK and the filter would not freeze up. Alan never called him back. I then called Dickson Brothers and informed them that I was very concerned about what the freeze would do to the fish and pond and wanted to purchase some aerators and pond heaters from them. The guy told me that I would have to speak with Alan because he was familiar with the pond, but that they would be able to get us the aerators and heaters we needed. He assured me that Alan would be in the office "any minute." We left our number and waited for him to call. Hours went by and we never heard from him. My husband again reached out to his cell and I followed up with his office. Again, they informed us that Alan would call us. We grew more and more concerned because we didn't know if we should trust that Alan would call us back and get us the aerators and heaters we needed in time or if we should go out and buy them. We continued to follow up to no avail. After days of trying to reach Alan, we decided to buy what we needed through Amazon. Unfortunately, the items were delayed due to the storm and we were not able to get them. We ended up having to get up every 2 hours throughout each night to boil water in a pot and sit it on the pond to break up the ice. We then had to shovel chunks of ice out of the pond only to have it freeze back over and do it all again every 2 hours. Our dryer didn't work so we couldn't warm our gloves. We ended up having to pull all the ice out bare handed for 3 nights straight. During this entire time, Alan, nor anyone else from Dickson Brothers ever returned our calls. It has now been 10 days since we originally tried to get ahold of this company. Suddenly, one of the employees, (Francisco) randomly showed up on our doorstep Monday morning without notice. I was in the middle of a work meeting. I went out to speak with him and told him how blown away I was that he would randomly just show up 10 days after we frantically called them for help. Mind you, he showed up when the weather was 62 degrees and pure sunshine. When I told him how mad my husband and I were, he just said "OK" and proceeded to leave. WOW!!!!!!! No apology or explanation whatsoever. I'm so happy we gave this company over $3,000 a few weeks ago. I guess business is so good for them that they don't care if they lose our repeat business. It's a crying shame that we couldn't rely on them during an emergency that will most likely never happen again in our lifetime. Even if Alan has the best excuse in the world for never returning all of our calls, their office had our number and someone should have followed up with us. If you can't depend on them for the biggest emergency you'll probably ever have, what can you depend on them for? **UPDATE: Alan called my husband this morning about our review and was INCREDIBLY RUDE!!!! He tried to claim he was upfront with the high cost for the aquatic plants (he most certainly was not). He didn't apologize or care about what happened, he only cared about the bad review and said he'd be refuting it!!!! He called the review "scathing." He should have been more concerned that everything in this review is factual and that is no way to run a business or treat customers that have spent thousands with a company.** read more

I had two different pool repair companies come out to repair the poor water flow to my pool and spa. Neither of the techs that were sent out could properly dialog the problem and fix it. I finally called Dickson Brothers and Travis came out that same day spent over an hour dialoging the system made recommendation for the fix and gave me and sentiment. He returned the next with an assistant and repaired the system. After completion the pool is operating as good as or better than it ever had. I might add I spent over a month dealing with the previous (in my opinion second rate) companies. Dickson Brother had me up and running in just two days. After six months of wasted effort, Dickson Brothers sent two people who were the most knowledgeable maintenance and repair people I've met. Recently I purchased a UV that didn't work and when I called the store to tell them that the light wasn't working properly I was treated rudely by Steve who had installed the light for me in the store and told me there were no returns. Later when I called back and talked to Travis and told him about Steve Travis told me I was an "Ass" and I was trying to commit fraud on the business. This is after shopping with them for 16 years now. He then said he was documenting our conversation and refused to give me his name. I had to call back later in the day to get Travis name. If I had to recommend a pool store, it would always be Dickson Bros! Where I haven't had much luck with other stores, who ever I end up talking to at Dickson Bros. always seems to be knowledgeable and polite. I don't feel as if they're pushing things on me for sales, but rather suggesting things I might actually need or like. They take the time to carefully test my pool water and no matter the situation or condition of my pool they always seem to have the answer! In my first encounter with this store I was having a particularly stubborn algae problem that summer that I just couldn't seem to get under control. I was personally helped by who I beleive to be the owner himself. After following his instruction my water was clear and ready to swim in in no time! I was sold faulty equipment by these guys and told to deal with the manufacturer. Who has time for that? Refund my money or swap it out. Instead I'm told to call the maker of the equipment. For product selection regarding pond and water garden equipment and supplies in the DFW area, this place is hard to beat. Unfortunately, some members of the staff are incompetent. I called to see if a particular product was available at the store. After waiting on the phone for six minutes for an answer, the sales associate returns to the phone and asked if i had been helped. I told her, yes, because she was the one who said she would check on the product. Apparently in the six minutes that elapsed she had forgotten to check on the product. ADD? Dementia? Anyway, before I can remind her of the particular brand name, she rushed off to check on the product. When she returns, she confirms that they have the product. I then mention the brand name again, because I'm not certain I'm dealing with someone who is fully present. My suspicion was correct. She had no idea what brand I had asked her about. She runs off again to check and returns a moment later to tell me the brands that is available. It was not the exact brand I wanted, but it was an acceptable option. I then drive 20 miles to the store to buy the product. When I arrive and ask about it, I'm told that they are out of stock. Really? WTF? The store associate tells me that he tried to call me to tell me before I left. Unfortunately, I missed the call, but he didn't bother to leave a message. I saw a call before I left, but I didn't recognize the number. That's a complete lack of customer service and attention to quality. I then drove the 20 miles back home, empty handed. Their prices are a little high, but they are very patient and knowledgeable. They will take the time to help you and explain things multiple times if necessary. They have saved me hundreds of dollars with their advice. If I know exactly what I need (like a Polaris part), I'll get it for half the price on Amazon. But if I need help with anything like water chemistry or redoing the seals on my pump, I'll gladly pay more because they take the time to get you the right parts and explain how to use them. I went to Dickson Bro. to ask a question about a pool sweep (Polaris360) I had bought online. When manager found out I it ordered online he would not answer questions . When I ask how much it would cost to come out and set-up I was told it would be $200.00. I live about 5 miles from the store. Texan pools had already quoted $95.00 and they had to come from Plano. I have had my pool for over 12 years. I have had so many problems in keeping my pool clean and safe for my grandchildren to swim. So many times they complained about their eyes hurting and turning red. My daughter suggested that I hire Pool Troopers. I've been a customer of Dickson Brothers for several years and their customer service and knowledge about water gardening and koi is second to none. I recently moved from Dallas and a home with a 6500 gallon koi pond, to a home in the Austin area without a pond. Unfortunately the new owner of my Dallas property did not want the koi, of which I had 42 of various sizes...some as large as 25 pounds. Finding a good home for my koi was a huge concern. Dickson Brothers were able to come out and relocate them. The crew were extremely gentle and careful in the transfer, and they came fully prepared to make this as stress free as possible for the fish (and me!). Dickson Brothers has always been there when I needed them when it comes to water gardening...from diagnosing a disease, water quality, ongoing maintenance, buying supplies to this final stage of transferring the koi to a good home. read more
