went to buy an exercise bike. Had one on floor for sale "As is". With no chord to plug in or straps for pedals. Was told I could buy the insurance and they would furnish it for me. LOL. Ok lets look at the treadmills. Got on a treadmill. Oh these two floor models are out of stock. Basically everything on the floor was not sellable. I came to buy something. Left with nothing. This was one of the worst shopping experience I've ever had. I went in for some women's hiking boots and made my way back into the corner where they were located. There was a display of men's hiking boots and when I asked the girl if she had any Merrill women's hiking boots she pointed over to another corner and said yeah they're over there. When I went over there there was four hiking boots that she was pointing at and they were all men's. And they weren't even Merrill's. So I came back to where the Merrills were and said do you have any women's and she says no these are just men's. I was needing some information about the shoe and she said sorry I don't know anything about hiking boots. She left without asking any other questions about me needing help and so I was determined to see if there was any woman's in the boxes and boxes on the Shelf.. I almost immediately found the size that I wanted and I tried them on and they were just perfect. They were exactly what I was looking for and yet she had no interest in what I wanted nor did she even asked if she could maybe help me with something else. I grabbed the Box and went over to the running shoes and had a similar experience with another salesperson and asked if they had any more sizes in the shoe that I found that I liked. He too was very clueless about the inventory and kind of just left me on my own. At that point I was not very happy but I went to the check out and all I needed was one simple question and that was whether or not my Merrell's were waterproof and or if they had any information on those particular boots. Three people behind the counter had no interest in helping me Beyond wanting to take my money and I was so disgusted that I walked out of the store without the shoes that I really like just for the principle of it all. Not only did they lose a future customer but they also lost the sale. You would think with the businesses all closed down for several months that they'd be anxious to do anything they could to have a satisfied customer. They all were very clueless and unless you already know what you are looking for and you have done your own research don't bother going there for help cuz you're going to get NONE. Only one aspect of this strore is negative. But that aspect is huge. To the point: Not enough Sales Associates. Doing business at Dick's in Salinas takes more time than waiting for a United Airlines flight coming from Chicago in the winter. It took a total of 5 hours to buy a .22 rifle. The golf clubs I bought for my son almost a half an hour. And I called ahead to have them put aside. And I just tried again to call them and after 15 minutes of being on hold, I decided to hang up and call Big 5. They say good things come to those that wait. I had some help after walking the store for 20 minutes and waiting another 15 minutes at the gun section. Once I had the help I felt a little uncomfortable because I'm sure it's a security precaution for them to take our drivers license before you can hold a gun. I had a horrible customer service experience here. Called a few minutes before opening and someone picked up, only to ask me to call back in a couple minutes. Off to a great start Dick's! Why bother to even pick up the phone? Called back looking for a surf fishing rod. They connected me to Randy who asked for my number and if he could call me back. All I needed to know was what they had in stock. Oh well. 3-4 hours go by and I finally get a message from him, talking about how he wasn't familiar with the model I was inquiring about. Why didn't he ask for clarification when talking to me the first time? Terms like "Shakespeare, Ugly Stik, Big Water" are all ones that you should be pretty familiar with if you work in the fishing department. Come on now! Where's the product knowledge?? Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere and found much better service/help with fishing stuff at both Outdoor World and West Marine. I'll stick to REI and other outdoor vendors for my needs and don't see myself ever going into Dick's in Salinas. read more

I went to purchase a hunting sled from Dicks with an online 20% off coupon. The sled was full price but with the coupon it was worth getting it. A heavy set female manager, approx mid 30's, went to scan my phone and told me the coupon was expired. I apologized and told her I had another coupon I'd found online that was current. She stopped me and advised me that "coupons from Google" were not allowed. She refused to allow any coupons that had originated from Google or were found via online internet searches. I didn't have the energy to debate this ridiculous rule of hers or point out the inability of anyone to enforce an online coupon origin. I told her that didn't make any sense and if she wouldn't allow the current 20% off coupon, I wasn't interested in purchasing the sled. She stood by her price scanning guns and refused to honor the coupon. Dicks lost out on another sale and all future business. I have left previous negative reviews about Dicks and it's operations and screw up with a gun they sold me (which was early and they begged me to return it to the store). I removed the poor review because I felt like it may have been an isolated incident. However, it's now apparent that this store needs to either shut its doors or seriously train its staff. Terrible customer service. When you could get someone's attention they knew nothing about the products. I was looking for a home gym with a budget of 1,000 to 1,500. There was a guy ahead of me looking at the same equipment, we both got so frustrated with the service rep that we left. These guys lost at least 2,000 in sales today. Glorified Big 5' , has some decent sporting good items, a lot of items and the kid in the hunting department is awesome. But the rest of the place the service is terrible, the people don't seem to be happy to have a job, and two have only two folks at the checkout during Christmas? I like the inventory here and prices are competitive, they even have bulk ammo. Although the ammo is not as cheap as Wal-Marts its not too bad. Decent selection of long guns as well as accessories and other supplies. As long as the customer service remains as well as it has been for me. I WILL be back here often. read more

Tried to return a $700 guns safe because it was too big for our application. Only the top of the box was opened for measurements. It took the "manager" 10 minutes to ask questions to the cashier until he finally came out to "inspect" the safe. He said we had to take the safe out of the truck to inspect it. He reached into the package and inspected it for another 10 minutes until we started getting tired of all this waiting so we started asking questions. He said we were harassing him and he wouldn't take the return, I tried anything to change his mind but he refused to help. His name was Ken and he was only an acting manager. He gave us a fake customer service number, we called and then left in anger. We will try and return the safe when this idiot isn't working and will never be back after. I am very pleased with my service today. I came in tonight with my wife to just kinda burn some time and maybe buy something. As we walked around the store, the employees were more than willing to lend any type of lending hand that they could. We were always greeted with a smile, and I really appreciate that. One employee stood above the rest, her name is Susan. She was very welcoming and funny. She made finding things easy, and our checkout enjoyable As well. As far as inventory is concerned, they have anything and everything you can think of when it comes to outdoor activities. This is a big sporting goods franchise, so you already know that some things are going to be highly priced, but that's to be expected when a store sells nothing but quality equipment and clothing. I'll definitely be coming back from anything as far as clothing, softball gear or golf gear. I know that I'll be treated with great customer service, which is #1 in my book(you'll see that if you read my other reviews). Pro's: good selection, staff is friendly Con's: Deals are rare, returns are problematic So first of all, expect to pay full price on items. Once you get over the sticker shock, the store has a decent selection of items and if you ask the staff a question they try their best to help. In my experience, even if their answer is "no", or "I don't know", they make an effort and don't just brush you off. I've bought a couple of things from them including gym accesories, clothing, and a couple of baseball and tennis items and the service has always been good. My gripe with them is on how you get treated when you return an item. As an example of what I call the "Dick's Experience"; I recently went in to buy a $30 shoe and after talking to one of their staff, he sold me on a $110 shoe. It was a "top of the line" running shoe and since I was not planning on running it, the staff person said it should last a long time. His recommendation was great, the shoe was super comfortable and I was planning on buying at least one more pair to be my every day shoe. Unfortunately, the shoe did not last long and the sole was peeling off within 3 weeks of light use. By light I mean I basically walked to the gym, lifted weights, and walked back to my car in them. I brought it in near the end of 30 days with a receipt and was told that they would not replace it because it was defective :) Please read that sentence again and appreciate the irony. The staff member was told that if the shoe was not in sellable condition they would not take it back, and she relayed the message to me. The manager didn't even look at the shoe or ask for my receipt, they just talked about it through their headsets. As much as that all sucked, I was ok with it. The part that irked me was that they then suggested that I might have damaged the shoe myself on purpose. They also pointed out that this is a "running" shoe not a "walking" shoe, so my walking around in it was a misuse of the shoe. When I mentioned how ridiculous that sounds I was promptly corrected and made aware that "walking is not the same as running", hence the misuse part :) I have only returned shoes once before (about 5-6 years ago), and the store I bought it at (Big 5) had the manager come out, take a look at the shoe and then told me he was sorry I had this happen and that they would gladly exchange it. Dick's staffing handled the similar situation by implying that I was either trying to pull a fast one or too stupid to know how to use a shoe. Well since I was not trying to pull a fast one I guess I'm just stupid. Big 5 may have a smaller selection, but from now on they will have my future business. read more

Well another excursion in dysfunctional Salinas retail. Went to Dick's to find a bike for the grandson. Don't know much about kids bikes so I sought out a sales associate for advise. There were none circulating in the vicinity so I called the store and asked for help in the bike dept. No one came. Went to the front and found one person manning the register. I asked him for assist and he said, "I can't leave the register". Well how about calling someone. Blank stare. I left. Question is "How does this place make a profit". Shopping at Dick's is a kind of do-it-yourself project. Hey I just wanted to say, I'm really glad that you have a store in Salinas because there is really no other good options for solid sports wear and equipment in the whole city. I really like the way your store is organized, in different sections for different types of sports equipment and apparel. It makes it easy to find what your looking for. My only suggestion is that you really need better customer service with employees that know your products. There isn't ever enough staff in your store and its even difficult to buy things because often there is nobody at the check stands to help you. read more

Even with 6+ people waiting they refuse to open at least 3 checkers. Shoes are in complete disarray, spent 30 minutes going through baseball cleat boxes because the young man that was supposed to help me said they had one pair left, and his gallant effort of a 5 minute look didn't help at all. Bad customer service from the manager named Lindsay told me she was too busy to help me and I had to wait an hour never shopping there again

Bought a bat online and they shipped it with no plastic on the bat. Tried to return it and manager told me he couldn't take it because the plastic was removed. Well hello bonehead you guys shipped it to me like that. Manager wasn't smart at all, you could tell that you guys shipped to me with no wrapper because price tag was on the actual bat and not the wrapper. All the bats in store have price tag on the wrapper so somehow I magically removed the price tag from the wrapper and placed it back the bat perfectly? Manager needs some common since there is no way that could happen. Needless to say I will not be giving these guys anymore of my business. I will by from baseballsavings.com or other businesses online that will take care of their customers. Oh and yeah the manager told me I would have to try to get a refund from the manufacturer. I'm pretty sure the manufacturer shipped the bat to Dicks with plastic on the bat so why the heck would it be a manufacturer issue? Don't do business with these crooks. read more

I don't like to write bad reviews, but I really dislike poor customer service. When I got inside there were five employees in the front, not a single one stopped their conversation to greet me, or ask if I needed any help. This was a Tuesday afternoon, and it was not busy inside the store. They might have been discussing work-related things, but I feel like basic customer service would be to acknowledge a new customer. I just wandered around the store until I finally found the section that I needed. This is a huge store with a lot of options, but if you don't know where to go it can be annoying. While I was wandering around, I saw another employee and we made eye contact but once again he didn't seemed interested in whether or not I needed help. I ended up leaving with a small purchase, when I had intended to make a much larger one but most of the products either didn't have price tags or were mislabeled. I will say that the woman at the register was nice. I won't go back, and would recommend going to a different store for Sporting Goods unless you had to be there. read more

I personally really like this store. Sadly Dick's Sporting Goods in Salinas is a victim of its customer base. Too many times have I been in the store where there are unattended kids destroying the place. Kids playing on treadmills/ellipticals, playing hockey with the putters in golf, shooting basketballs in the sports area, so on and so forth. This is a STORE not a DAYCARE. I think if the people shopping there took better care of the store then maybe there would be more help from the associates rather then the associates having to prevent damage and picking up someone's mess. Also, I have experience selling firearms and if you don't like the way that Dick's Sporting Goods conducts theirs then you can always go elsewhere. It's their firearm license at risk and they have the right to be as strict as they want. I really enjoy this store and hope it sticks around. read more
