Sigh. I had no expectations and was still let down. I always make my salads at home. That means I always pick and clean my own greens, and pick out the pieces that don't belong. ... I don't think DiBella's does this. But, given that it is a restaurant that serves many more customers than I do (#FourMouths at home), I can understand that they favor efficiency for quality in some light. I ordered a chicken caesar salad through their app (which is quite basic, might I add). I was elated to see that theirs comes with bacon by default -- though nowhere did it say that it included spinach, either by default or as an option. Keep this in mind. I was in walking distance, so I walked over and was happy to see that my order was ready by the pickup counter. The staff -- who seemed very nice -- directed me over. I grabbed my bag, a fork, and was on my way. I get to where I was and open up the bowl... there's spoiled lettuce alllllll over the place. In the picture is about 98% of the lettuce I picked out that was either soft or pink/red. This is absolutely unacceptable in my book (of course, because my standards are a little higher than a restaurant that serves probably hundreds of folks a day). I will say, however, that the chicken was alright and the bacon was... well, crispier than the lettuce. It was real good. Maybe it was just the day I went in for the initial review but stopping by for a follow-up visit the subs are exactly as I remember when I used to eat lunch at their Wallingford location. I know the bread is the thing here, using dough that's 'aged' 16 hours and baked twice a day you won't find a better sub roll. The bonus is when they serve it with the proper amount of meat (or at least what I remember consistently getting here) - outstanding. Service is fast and easy, the people are always nice and happy to help or answer any questions you might have. Dining in this visit you can check out all the nostalgia posted on the walls, from the vintage ads to the photos of the original butcher shop location. If I had to name the best national grinder/sub shop chain operating in the Greater Hartford area, I'd probably say "Why do I have to do that?" But after you convinced me that I had to, I would say DiBella's. If my Quick Internet Research is correct, DiBella's has 46 locations in states including New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. I live near the DiBella's in Newington, but I believe they also have CT locations in Hamden and Wallingford. I'd like to say I'm a DiBella's expert because I've lived in two of the states with DiBella's locations, but sadly, I can't back that up. But I have eaten DiBella's numerous times. My most frequent order is The Godfather on a sesame grinder roll with provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, banana peppers, black olives, mayo, seasoned oil and vinegar. The meats are Genoa salami, capicola, and spicy ham. If you want, DiBella's will grill the meat. I'm 50-50 on that. I went grilled today. Only places with access to the very best Italian bakeries have better grinder rolls than DiBella's. DiBella's bakes their bread on site. The rolls have great weight, crusty outer texture and soft inner freshness. And I love the toasty sesames. For me, no national or large state chain is within throwing distance of DiBella's grinder rolls. The other ingredients are great as well. The meats are high quality. The vegetables are fresh and crisp. The condiments are also good. My one pain point with my sandwich today, was that the meat was sort of rolled up on one side of the roll, and the toppings were on the other side of the roll, so that there wasn't an even distribution of toppings and meat when I bit into the grinder. This happens at a lot of places, and I'm not a fan. In any event, I've got to downgrade for sandwich construction. In terms of the grinder components, I give DiBella's high marks. My first time getting a sandwich from DiBella's, I was impressed. My husband gave me his gift card he got from his job. My sister and I got subs for our trip to Mass. We made our own because we don't like all the "extras". We loved them!! They were stuffed with a very generous amount of cold cuts, which can make for a messy lunch lol. We were good, we had a lot of napkins!! Excellent quality and quantity!! I can at least say the Genoa is great! Hot or cold, these sandwiches are meaty as can be. After the prep line, side salads, obligatory chips, fountain drinks, and dessert cookies are your last minute decisions before checkout. If you're passing through, the dining room is huge! The Godfather is loaded with meat, and a large means two meals, the cheese steak is excellent, and they can be as heavy or light as needed. Everytime I've gotten food from here at this Dibella's Subs on the Berlin Turnpike I have never been disappointed. I always felt full after my meal and I don't even need anything on the side either! We got a set of coupons for subs and decided to check DiBella's out. We stopped in around 1 on a Sunday afternoon. The staff gave us a warm welcome and were happy to help us. Since we had coupons one for a free small sub and one buy one get one we each selected a sub of our choice. I got The Godfather and the hubby got a Dagwood and we shared a meatball sub. The meatball sub was excellent! The meatballs tasted fresh made and were gigantic! We stayed simple and only had provolone cheese added. The Dagwood consists of Turkey, ham, and corned beef. He added roasted red peppers he couldn't stop talking about. The godfather is a classic Italian sub with Genoa salami Coriccola and spicy ham I added a bunch of veggies. First, I love subs and trying new places. There was nothing wrong with DiBella's and also nothing great. My sub was good, and what's ironic is my least favorite part was the bread. They make a big deal over being a maker and making their own bread but my "plain" roll seemed more like a pretzel roll;dense, and not what I would pick for an Italian cold cut combo - which is what I ordered (The Godfather). My GF has a Cheesesteak. I liked everything about The Godfather except the roll - nice meats, right amount, and dressed nicely with roasted and sweet peppers in addition to the usual. The cheesesteak was on a sesame roll which was softer, and I liked it more. A nice, real Italian roll would have been better on both in my opinion. Like others said the steak was NOT chewy and stringy, I liked that - but almost too soft and mushy like it wasn't meat (but assume it was!). Overall a good sandwich shop with lots of seating and good service. Also very clean - but won't be driving out of my way to go here very often as I like Jersey Mikes better and they're much closer. read more

It's been roughly 7 years since my first trip to a DiBella's and I've been trying to love this place ever since. I had some time to kill before a tattoo appointment down the street so I decided to stop in for a quick meatball sub. The place was pretty dead at 10:30 in the morning so it was the perfect opportunity to get in and out quickly. The restaurant itself is very nice for a sandwich shop and features a pretty easy line process. The staff was friendly enough and before I knew it I was in and out with a warm sub ready to get eaten.....in my car because im weird. The sandwich itself was decent, but like my previous visits that's all it was. People absolutely love this place and I keep trying to order new things so I can join in on the love but yet again I was simply left feeling it was just alright. The meat was decent, the bread was decent, the sauce was decent, and overall it was just a really decent meatball sub. Stopped in on a Sunday around noon. First time we went to a DiBella's. We ordered two subs, a small BLT and a medium Godfather. Ordering was simple enough. Got our drinks and paid, and less than 5 minutes they were ready. We ordered both on sesame sub rolls. Mine had a really tough crust on it, but I thought it was normal for them. Then I asked my wife and sampled hers. That one was normal. Not like it wasn't edible, so I kept it, instead of returning it. Other than the hard crust, it tasted good. There was plenty of meat, and the veggies in it were good, but,,,,,,,,; See attached picture. I guess this is the standard way they build them, seeing that this was the first time we went to a DiBella. The meat was folded in half, and took up half of the surface, and the same goes for the veggies. The only way to get the full effect was to eat the middle, then you had to have a bite of the meat side, then a bite on the veggie side. When you eat a pizza, you usually get everything in one bite, not every 3 to 4 bites. We had the fountain drinks and both of the flavors we had took forever to fill because it was more foam than liquid. As for the employees, they were all friendly. Also the place was really clean. If it wasn't for the good taste of them, I would give it 2 stars. For this being our first experience here, I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again. read more

I always get the DiBella's Cheesesteak sub, but the Uncle Louie and the Godfather are also great. I usually just get the combo with a fountain soda. I haven't tried their potato salad or macaroni salad. My only pickle with DiBella is their ordering system at the counter. Then I said I'll be there in five minutes and I drove in and I was there 10 minutes before they closed and they had turned the lights off and said that they were closed and me that they were out of bread 15 minutes before the place closed. which they should have told me when they called. 8:52pm, they saw us driving in, and they close at 9. turned the stores lights off on the sign. i called around 8:40, asking if they are open until 9pm. which they are, but decided to say "we're closed". 8 minutes before. another worker said "we're out of bread". I love going to Stew Leonards so I've passed by this sub shop multiple times. Finally we decided to give it a go, on our way to Stews of course. The decor was styled like an old school eatery with ad print pictures, black and white tile floors and booth tables. The sandwich selection is made up of preselected choices like the Dagwood, The Godfather, and the Uncle Louie. You can also build your own if you prefer. They offer hot subs as well and salads. My husband got the Dagwood and I chose the Uncle Louie both on their sesame bread. As we were waiting I could see that they cook the meat for the cheesesteak on a flattop grill, not the microwave like other places. My son got a small BLT kids meal which came with a cookie, apple juice and applesauce. When we unwrapped our food we were wowed by the size of the sandwiches! Meat stacked high, crisp bread, loads of veggies. Everything was fresh and not drowned in condiments. The subs come in three sizes; large, medium and small. My husband could only eat half of the large and I struggled to finish the medium. The loss of 1 star comes from the staff side of things. I don't know if they had several new people or what but they didn't seem to know quite what to do. The server didn't know how to enter our food in to the computer, and didn't give us our cups for the drinks so we had to wait until I could get someone's attention. Then it turned out he gave me the wrong sandwich. When I asked to have it corrected that server seemed thrown off as to what she should do and asked what I assumed was a manager. Happened upon this place a few years ago when my bank opened a branch nearby. I've been back a number of times, I tried all different breads in various sizes, my favorite is the "Everything" roll, like an Everything bagel it's real yummy. I've had their meatball grinder which as great ("grinder" means sub if you're from CT). Lately I've been getting their Old Fashioned sub, also really great. Honestly I haven't gotten any other kind of sub, I know, I need to expand my horizons. The workers there a great, fast a courteous. Not sure what I'm suppose to do with this sandwich? Maybe starting with a different piece of bread would've been smarter or just cutting it correctly the first time. The entire sandwich is cut straight through so you'd have to attempt to hold it like a burger and eat it. That's honestly not even the issue I don't mind getting dirty. Restaurants should realize that a customer's next visit to their establishment is as unique as their first and can be their last. After a couple of moderately pleasing Newington location DiBella's visits as I worked through the menu I opted for the Uncle Louie on my last visit...huge mistake. The roast beef was from the very end of the cut and was half fat and half an unchewable gelatinous mystery substance. I was so grossed-out that I couldn't even consider the option of just removing the roast beef. All of the roast beef in this 14" sub was nothing but gross scraps. And it smelled like stinky shoes. I tossed the whole sun into the trash and have never gone back and do not intend to anytime soon. A bit of decent employee training could have avoided this...would the oerson who assembled this sub actually try to eat that crap themselves? I truly hope that expecting a bit of common sense is not asking too much. read more

Spent a day gallivanting in Springfield, and was starving when I got off the train in Berlin. Needed to go to Stew Leonards as I was in the area, and saw this place. It's like Subway but far better. Their everything bread is fantastic. It's a little expensive, but the sandwich was really good. I had the Constitution. I got a medium, which was huge, but I hadn't eaten anything all day, so I finished it pretty easily (piggy.). My requested additions included provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and banana peppers. The ratio of bread to ingredients was too high with a minimal amount in the way of the add-ons. Though the sub was cut in half, I would estimate 75% of the ingredients were relegated to one half. Since the bread was heavier than I prefer, I ended up just eating a little over half of the sub. The overall flavor was just okay providing me with little incentive to make a return visit. A rating of 2.5 would be most appropriate. read more

While on my way to get lost in the maze at stews I was hungry so decided to take the family to sample the overpriced subway. Upon walking in, I got no welcoming, no introduction, wasn't asked if it was my first time. No suggestions or samples. The employees seemed like automatons and didn't really listen to what we ordered. Basically just pick a combo and add some toppings. I got the Dagwood, which is low quality slimy turkey, formed pressed ham and thick cut pastrami that was tough. The mayo was slathered on way too thick, it was dripping in globs off my sandwich, which was made on the incorrect bread. Totally not a sandwich I would ever buy again. My wife got the steak sandwich which would have been decent except Dibellas hasn't discovered what a salt shaker is. Bland as all hell...
