Maybe it was just the day I went in for the initial review but stopping by for a follow-up visit the subs are exactly as I remember when I used to eat lunch at their Wallingford location. I know the bread is the thing here, using dough that's 'aged' 16 hours and baked twice a day you won't find a better sub roll. The bonus is when they serve it with the proper amount of meat (or at least what I remember consistently getting here) - outstanding. Service is fast and easy, the people are always nice and happy to help or answer any questions you might have. Dining in this visit you can check out all the nostalgia posted on the walls, from the vintage ads to the photos of the original butcher shop location. With curated choices and unlimited custom options you'd be hard-pressed to not find something you like here. We are lucky to have them in CT - Five Stars! read more

Have gotten many subs from Dibellas last night I got one that was the worst I have ever gotten anywhere. Will not go back anymore. Tossed it after first bite read more

Their catch phrase is "Best subs you ever had." My meatball sub was good and the bread delicious! A 5 inch sub was plenty and you can put on any toppings. One of the people I was dining with though had meat on only a small portion of his sub which was so strange since my sub was so good! Purchased a large dill pickle which was just ok and the pasta salad was a fine. What stood out was the friendly woman behind the counter. It's so nice to go to a place with people who want to interact with you and are smiling. read more

Sigh. I had no expectations and was still let down. I always make my salads at home. That means I always pick and clean my own greens, and pick out the pieces that don't belong. ... I don't think DiBella's does this. But, given that it is a restaurant that serves many more customers than I do (#FourMouths at home), I can understand that they favor efficiency for quality in some light. I ordered a chicken caesar salad through their app (which is quite basic, might I add). I was elated to see that theirs comes with bacon by default -- though nowhere did it say that it included spinach, either by default or as an option. Keep this in mind. I was in walking distance, so I walked over and was happy to see that my order was ready by the pickup counter. The staff -- who seemed very nice -- directed me over. I grabbed my bag, a fork, and was on my way. I get to where I was and open up the bowl... there's spoiled lettuce alllllll over the place. In the picture is about 98% of the lettuce I picked out that was either soft or pink/red. This is absolutely unacceptable in my book (of course, because my standards are a little higher than a restaurant that serves probably hundreds of folks a day). I will say, however, that the chicken was alright and the bacon was... well, crispier than the lettuce. It was real good. I am not angry, and I'm not exactly disappointed, but my lunch was a waste of $12 or however much it was. Would I try DiBella's again? Yes, but I'll stick to making my own salads. Lmao. read more

If I had to name the best national grinder/sub shop chain operating in the Greater Hartford area, I'd probably say "Why do I have to do that?" But after you convinced me that I had to, I would say DiBella's. If my Quick Internet Research is correct, DiBella's has 46 locations in states including New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. I live near the DiBella's in Newington, but I believe they also have CT locations in Hamden and Wallingford. I'd like to say I'm a DiBella's expert because I've lived in two of the states with DiBella's locations, but sadly, I can't back that up. But I have eaten DiBella's numerous times. My most frequent order is The Godfather on a sesame grinder roll with provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, banana peppers, black olives, mayo, seasoned oil and vinegar. The meats are Genoa salami, capicola, and spicy ham. If you want, DiBella's will grill the meat. I'm 50-50 on that. I went grilled today. Only places with access to the very best Italian bakeries have better grinder rolls than DiBella's. DiBella's bakes their bread on site. The rolls have great weight, crusty outer texture and soft inner freshness. And I love the toasty sesames. For me, no national or large state chain is within throwing distance of DiBella's grinder rolls. The other ingredients are great as well. The meats are high quality. The vegetables are fresh and crisp. The condiments are also good. My one pain point with my sandwich today, was that the meat was sort of rolled up on one side of the roll, and the toppings were on the other side of the roll, so that there wasn't an even distribution of toppings and meat when I bit into the grinder. This happens at a lot of places, and I'm not a fan. In any event, I've got to downgrade for sandwich construction. In terms of the grinder components, I give DiBella's high marks. I don't like it as well as the best area independent Italian sandwich makers, but it is my favorite chain. Four Stars read more

Good sandwiches, and I suppose they could have been 'free' if I was dishonest. One guy taking the orders, a bunch of people making the sandwiches, and no one to take your money at the end. They all seemed pretty confused as to how checkout was even supposed to work. Once we got it figured out, my lunch date and I enjoyed our cold tuna salad and hot chicken Philly. This was a rather pricey lunch and the toppings weren't evenly distributed. The bread is really good, though! read more

My first time getting a sandwich from DiBella's, I was impressed. My husband gave me his gift card he got from his job. My sister and I got subs for our trip to Mass. We made our own because we don't like all the "extras". We loved them!! They were stuffed with a very generous amount of cold cuts, which can make for a messy lunch lol. We were good, we had a lot of napkins!! Excellent quality and quantity!! I can at least say the Genoa is great! Very fresh and the bread is delicious, ( we both got Rye , which was a limited time offering, so, not sure if they still have it). Lots to choose from here. We got curbside which was great. If you're wanting a nice sandwich and don't want Subway....Can't go wrong here. read more

Covid-19 era: Come here if you aren't cooking, don't feel like dining in, but don't feel like fast food. The bread is excellent and their subs are way above Subway. Hot or cold, these sandwiches are meaty as can be. After the prep line, side salads, obligatory chips, fountain drinks, and dessert cookies are your last minute decisions before checkout. If you're passing through, the dining room is huge! The Godfather is loaded with meat, and a large means two meals, the cheese steak is excellent, and they can be as heavy or light as needed. My then-four year old would only eat ham and Mayo, but the sandwich maker never rolled their eyes. For a good quick sandwich (or wrap, though their bread is so lovely I've never picked one), and comfy seating, this is probably your best stop if your passing between Meriden and Hartford. read more

Everytime I've gotten food from here at this Dibella's Subs on the Berlin Turnpike I have never been disappointed. I always felt full after my meal and I don't even need anything on the side either! Their buffalo chicken grinder is delicious, full of sauce and not messy either. The philly cheese steak grinder was full of flavor, cheese and decent quality steak. Service is quick as expected and I never really had any issues with staff not being too friendly except once a really long time ago but never again! Solid grinders for a solid price. Using the app and ordering online was super fast and easy as well. You get a whole super offical looking form with your pick-up order as well haha. read more

My job did a company lunch with their salads... amazing salads. So, I decided to try the sandwiches. I walked in and the dining area was relaxed. Not too brightly lit and not too dark either. Definitely a comfortable feel to the lunch break. (Surprised the ambience wasn't highlighted here on Yelp) When I ordered my sandwich, the staff was focused on making sure the lunch rush was being handled but did not sacrifice customer service. I ordered the Uncle Louie... AMAZING sandwich. Especially on their rye rolls. I should've ordered mustard and it would've been PERFECT. Overall, they stand out from other places read more

We got a set of coupons for subs and decided to check DiBella's out. We stopped in around 1 on a Sunday afternoon. The staff gave us a warm welcome and were happy to help us. Since we had coupons one for a free small sub and one buy one get one we each selected a sub of our choice. I got The Godfather and the hubby got a Dagwood and we shared a meatball sub. The meatball sub was excellent! The meatballs tasted fresh made and were gigantic! We stayed simple and only had provolone cheese added. The Dagwood consists of Turkey, ham, and corned beef. He added roasted red peppers he couldn't stop talking about. The godfather is a classic Italian sub with Genoa salami Coriccola and spicy ham I added a bunch of veggies. The combination of the spicy and salty was outstanding. The restaurant had a constant stream of patrons and the space was fresh and clean. We will be back read more

Yummy! The bread was fresh, soft, and chewy. The topping weren't overwhelming the meat. We got a turkey and 2 Italians just enough meat for my liking. I'm not a ton of meat person. Ordered on DoorDash for delivery to my hotel. Overall great service (order was correct!) and sandwiches! read more

I stopped here tonight after stopping somewhere else that was online only. I was surprised by the choices here. They make their bread fresh every day and I was able to get a very good veggie sub. First, I love subs and trying new places. There was nothing wrong with DiBella's and also nothing great. My sub was good, and what's ironic is my least favorite part was the bread. They make a big deal over being a maker and making their own bread but my "plain" roll seemed more like a pretzel roll;dense, and not what I would pick for an Italian cold cut combo - which is what I ordered (The Godfather). My GF has a Cheesesteak. I liked everything about The Godfather except the roll - nice meats, right amount, and dressed nicely with roasted and sweet peppers in addition to the usual. The cheesesteak was on a sesame roll which was softer, and I liked it more. A nice, real Italian roll would have been better on both in my opinion. Like others said the steak was NOT chewy and stringy, I liked that - but almost too soft and mushy like it wasn't meat (but assume it was!). Overall a good sandwich shop with lots of seating and good service. Also very clean - but won't be driving out of my way to go here very often as I like Jersey Mikes better and they're much closer. read more

The salad was terrible! The lettuce was old, the veggies were soggy and the chicken was fake! Never ever again

It's been roughly 7 years since my first trip to a DiBella's and I've been trying to love this place ever since. I had some time to kill before a tattoo appointment down the street so I decided to stop in for a quick meatball sub. The place was pretty dead at 10:30 in the morning so it was the perfect opportunity to get in and out quickly. The restaurant itself is very nice for a sandwich shop and features a pretty easy line process. The staff was friendly enough and before I knew it I was in and out with a warm sub ready to get eaten.....in my car because im weird. The sandwich itself was decent, but like my previous visits that's all it was. People absolutely love this place and I keep trying to order new things so I can join in on the love but yet again I was simply left feeling it was just alright. The meat was decent, the bread was decent, the sauce was decent, and overall it was just a really decent meatball sub. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this DiBella's location and it's a solid place to stop for a quick lunch. The employees were nice, the service was fast, and the sub was pretty alright. Stopped in on a Sunday around noon. First time we went to a DiBella's. We ordered two subs, a small BLT and a medium Godfather. Ordering was simple enough. Got our drinks and paid, and less than 5 minutes they were ready. We ordered both on sesame sub rolls. Mine had a really tough crust on it, but I thought it was normal for them. Then I asked my wife and sampled hers. That one was normal. Not like it wasn't edible, so I kept it, instead of returning it. Other than the hard crust, it tasted good. There was plenty of meat, and the veggies in it were good, but,,,,,,,,; See attached picture. I guess this is the standard way they build them, seeing that this was the first time we went to a DiBella. The meat was folded in half, and took up half of the surface, and the same goes for the veggies. The only way to get the full effect was to eat the middle, then you had to have a bite of the meat side, then a bite on the veggie side. When you eat a pizza, you usually get everything in one bite, not every 3 to 4 bites. We had the fountain drinks and both of the flavors we had took forever to fill because it was more foam than liquid. As for the employees, they were all friendly. Also the place was really clean. If it wasn't for the good taste of them, I would give it 2 stars. For this being our first experience here, I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again. read more

I love dibellas and look forward to eating there whenever I am in the area...however....the app is terrible, there is no way to get credit without emailing or ordering in advance....and while I am sympathetic to supply chain issues, it feels like a big miss to have a national chicken month promo with 2 special chicken subs and have no chicken available for any sandwiches...the cheesesteak was meh. service was fine, they were apologetic so no shade there, but man, you can't not have one of two proteins in your shop... read more

I recently stopped into DiBella's subs a few weeks ago, and remembered what I was missing! This isn't a subway - this is a real sandwich. Bread is fresh and delicious, toppings are plentiful, and options are endless. They have hot sandwiches or cold, and you can choose between their menu options or create your own sandwich with whatever you'd like. The line moved very quickly on a Saturday, and the staff behind the counter was friendly. Pricing is comparable to other similar establishments for the quality and amount of food you receive. There are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy your food if you'd like, or you can take it to go. I've also ordered from DiBella's via EZCater on a few occasions, and I've never been disappointed. They have always been on time, provide a beautiful setup with "extras" on the side (onions, condiments), and everyone seems to really enjoy it. read more

I don't think you can do better than Dibella's. I've eaten at their Milford location, and also their Newington eatery also. The sandwich offerings are plentiful on the meats and fresh toppings. Their fresh baked breads puts them over the top of their competitors. Sandwiches come in three sizes, depending on your appetite for the day. They always have plenty of help waiting to take your order, too - which is a plus at lunch hour. Can't decide what to get? No worries- you can build your own customized sub. I recommend enrolling in their sub club promos. You'll earn points towards free subs and get email offers on new items & other specials as well. I think one of the best features is the 1940's swing / big band music that you'll notice playing subtlety overhead during your dining experience. What a refreshing change from listening to some loud, annoying piped in FM station. read more

It is becoming one of my favorite chain sub deli's around. Great sandwich combinations, huge portions and great bread. The bread doesn't have that fake bread taste that you get from Subway. I always get the DiBella's Cheesesteak sub, but the Uncle Louie and the Godfather are also great. I usually just get the combo with a fountain soda. I haven't tried their potato salad or macaroni salad. My only pickle with DiBella is their ordering system at the counter. It is confusing on a busy day or when there are multiple sandwiches per order. read more

I love going to Stew Leonards so I've passed by this sub shop multiple times. Finally we decided to give it a go, on our way to Stews of course. The decor was styled like an old school eatery with ad print pictures, black and white tile floors and booth tables. The sandwich selection is made up of preselected choices like the Dagwood, The Godfather, and the Uncle Louie. You can also build your own if you prefer. They offer hot subs as well and salads. My husband got the Dagwood and I chose the Uncle Louie both on their sesame bread. As we were waiting I could see that they cook the meat for the cheesesteak on a flattop grill, not the microwave like other places. My son got a small BLT kids meal which came with a cookie, apple juice and applesauce. When we unwrapped our food we were wowed by the size of the sandwiches! Meat stacked high, crisp bread, loads of veggies. Everything was fresh and not drowned in condiments. The subs come in three sizes; large, medium and small. My husband could only eat half of the large and I struggled to finish the medium. The loss of 1 star comes from the staff side of things. I don't know if they had several new people or what but they didn't seem to know quite what to do. The server didn't know how to enter our food in to the computer, and didn't give us our cups for the drinks so we had to wait until I could get someone's attention. Then it turned out he gave me the wrong sandwich. When I asked to have it corrected that server seemed thrown off as to what she should do and asked what I assumed was a manager. The restaurant was clean enough but could've been a little better. It was obvious they hadn't done a round of table cleanup in awhile. All in all, we were really pleased with the food minus the staff hiccups and plan on going back next time we go to Stews. read more

Happened upon this place a few years ago when my bank opened a branch nearby. I've been back a number of times, I tried all different breads in various sizes, my favorite is the "Everything" roll, like an Everything bagel it's real yummy. I've had their meatball grinder which as great ("grinder" means sub if you're from CT). Lately I've been getting their Old Fashioned sub, also really great. Honestly I haven't gotten any other kind of sub, I know, I need to expand my horizons. The workers there a great, fast a courteous. I called 20 minutes before the store closed to order a sandwich which I have done 1 million times before and was told they don't take over the phone orders.. Then I said I'll be there in five minutes and I drove in and I was there 10 minutes before they closed and they had turned the lights off and said that they were closed and me that they were out of bread 15 minutes before the place closed. which they should have told me when they called. 8:52pm, they saw us driving in, and they close at 9. turned the stores lights off on the sign. i called around 8:40, asking if they are open until 9pm. which they are, but decided to say "we're closed". 8 minutes before. another worker said "we're out of bread". Which doesn't make sense, because I called and spoke with one of them, 12 minutes before 8:52. and they didn't mention that. I'd rate this a half star if that was an option. read more

Not sure what I'm suppose to do with this sandwich? Maybe starting with a different piece of bread would've been smarter or just cutting it correctly the first time. The entire sandwich is cut straight through so you'd have to attempt to hold it like a burger and eat it. That's honestly not even the issue I don't mind getting dirty. It's the salad that has zero dressing on it and came with no dressing and no it's not on there lightly, there is just nothing there, ordered ceaser and now I just have chicken and lettuce. All around garbage. read more

Spent a day gallivanting in Springfield, and was starving when I got off the train in Berlin. Needed to go to Stew Leonards as I was in the area, and saw this place. It's like Subway but far better. Their everything bread is fantastic. It's a little expensive, but the sandwich was really good. I had the Constitution. I got a medium, which was huge, but I hadn't eaten anything all day, so I finished it pretty easily (piggy.). Nobody bothered offering to toast/heat the sandwich, which was annoyint, but I wanted it cold anyway so I didn't say anything. The macaroni salad was good - although it tasted miracle whip-y, and I'm not a fan of miracle whip. read more

I stopped in on my way to Stew Leonard's a little after 12:30PM on a Tuesday and found the restaurant to be less busy than I would have anticipated. I had a coupon for a free classic sub so I asked what were my options and was told any cold sub. I chose the fresh baked multigrain roll and Italian cold cuts with Dibella's famous oil dressing. My requested additions included provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and banana peppers. The ratio of bread to ingredients was too high with a minimal amount in the way of the add-ons. Though the sub was cut in half, I would estimate 75% of the ingredients were relegated to one half. Since the bread was heavier than I prefer, I ended up just eating a little over half of the sub. The overall flavor was just okay providing me with little incentive to make a return visit. A rating of 2.5 would be most appropriate. read more

While on my way to get lost in the maze at stews I was hungry so decided to take the family to sample the overpriced subway. Upon walking in, I got no welcoming, no introduction, wasn't asked if it was my first time. No suggestions or samples. The employees seemed like automatons and didn't really listen to what we ordered. Basically just pick a combo and add some toppings. I got the Dagwood, which is low quality slimy turkey, formed pressed ham and thick cut pastrami that was tough. The mayo was slathered on way too thick, it was dripping in globs off my sandwich, which was made on the incorrect bread. Totally not a sandwich I would ever buy again. Have passed by here numerous times, so when Mark C and I needed to grab lunch on the way to our campsite, we decided to stop in and see what DiBella's was about We arrived and the store was jamming - they seem to be doing a very robust lunchtime business with everyone from business people to construction workers grabbing a bite. We stepped to the side and perused the menu. DiBella's is set up with a long counter and had about 7 or 8 employee ready to take your order. As soon as an employee was free, you are called over to place your order. You have your choice of three different types of bread and three sizes to choose from. Hot and cold sandwich options are available for purchase. I love that you don't have to worry about employees bumping elbows while trying to fill multiple orders and all trying to grab the one container holding the tomatoes. At DiBella's your "sandwich artist" creates your sandwich for you and you alone. I also enjoyed the fact that beside each employee is a listing of all the condiments available. The employee that waited on us was very pleasant and did not bat an eye when I said "load up the veggies on that sub". After the sub was made, you take a quick walk to pay and if you want, add "chips and a drink" to make it a combo. And here is one of the BEST THINGS EVERY - ONE OF THE SODA FOUNTAIN OPTIONS WAS REGULAR AND DIET DR. PEPPER. Such a rarity on the East Coast. Even if the sub was bad - they would get stars for this. The sandwich held up well during the hour trip to our destination and once unwrapped and I dug in, it was really, really good! I chose the everything bread - just like a bagel but in sandwich form - along with turkey and ham (no cheese) The bread had a bit of chew to it and the deli meat was shaved - not sure if they slice the meat on premises but it was definitely more tasty then your standard sandwiches from the sub chain shops in the area.
