This True Value store is one of the closest hardware stores to downtown. It's easy to get to off…read moreof Grand or 63rd, but turning around a trailer could be tough in this parking lot. The store is really clean, and there were actually employees walking around being helpful. What I like about these sized stores is that you can find your way around and things are geared more to homeowner type projects instead of contractors or renovations. You want to come here for those smaller projects, or if you need advice on something in your house. I wouldn't come here to buy yards of topsoil or huge piles of lumber. For us, it was in and out in 15 minutes to buy a hose, some seed and fertilizer. Prices were good (be sure to check out their house brand - it was cheaper than the big brands), and I found the selection to be good as well. Oh, and they rent tools if you need them - especially garden stuff (like sod cutters or rototillers)

Located in Waukee's Triangle District, and it is a special visit. Owner Geoff is such a good guy, exudes professionalism and awareness after 30+ years at the store. He has morphed the store into a current venue, handling today's needs. Impressive guy who cares about his customers. But it's Andie the Cat who rules the premises! She took me back to the right area and even picked them out for me. I forgot they had a minimum ($1) to use a credit card. I had no money with me besides my credit card. They offered me to come back and pay, I was afraid i would forget. I shopped instead. I knew I probably needed more items. When I checked out, the woman asked me if I was going to put the phone holder on my bike now. I said yes, so she followed me out with a screw driver. The screw was too short, so she went in and got a bigger one for me. You don't get service like this anymore.

So, I headed over here but I couldn't find that scent. A young employee asked me if I needed help and I told him my plight. He checked and said they had six in stock somewhere in the store. He went to look for them. A short time later he came back with someone who I assume was the manager. He assured me they were looking for it. They just didn't know where in the store they were. After some time later he told me he couldn't find it but he offered to take my name and phone number and would call me if they found it. I thought that was very nice of him to do that. I've never had any store manager do that before. I was very impressed. In fact, when I haven't been able to find a product in most big box stores and ask an employee for help, they usually give up after 30 seconds and tell me they must not have it if it's not on the shelf and don't even check in the back for me. But my visit wasn't a total loss because I found my all-time favorite Mrs. Meyer's hand soap there--the Iowa Pine scent. I felt like I struck gold. I have never been able to find any of the seasonal scents (which are way better than their regular scents) in any of the big box stores like Target. When I looked on the shelf here I even saw more seasonal scents than I've ever seen before. I was in hand soap heaven! I was very impressed with how clean and bright the store was. They have a large selection of Yeti tumbers and coolers, too. I love this store! I wish I could give this review 6 stars. These guys know the true meaning of excellent customer service; something that is sorely lacking in most stores these days. I will definitely be a repeat customer.

I was there at roughly 11 am on Tuesday, March 15, 2025. the problem involves a man and a woman, both of color and in late 20s or early 30s. This info is given just in case the manager of the garden center would like to start doing his/her job. I was loading 1.5 cu ft bags of soil into my cart when I noticed a skid 30 ft away. I rolled my cart less than 10 feet past the two employees described above who were leaning against shelving casually engaged in conversation. I had passed within just 3-4 feet of them. I started to unload the 4 bags from the cart onto the skid. When I looked up hoping that the guy would offer some help, I saw that he had turned his back to a 74 year old customer who was visibly huffing and puffing as he continued his conversation. That done, I went back to the soil location and added another 2 bags to the skid. After leaving the check-out I approached a managerial-looking woman who said that she was the front of store manager. I told her about it and she walked away and said nothing. So now I went out to my suv and loaded the 6 bags of soil into it. I drove to the outside of the garden center and stopped the car. That same guy was in a different location but within my view again leaning against shelving and casually chatting to someone (I couldn't see if it was the same woman).

Not to worry, because the door, paint, hardware and other odds and ends were in stock. I mentioned that the item was defective but he just rang up the return, handed me the receipt and said "You're done".
