Clive, IA location: I generally love Menards, and have always found their staff to be both friendly and helpful. Not this time though. I was there at roughly 11 am on Tuesday, March 15, 2025. the problem involves a man and a woman, both of color and in late 20s or early 30s. This info is given just in case the manager of the garden center would like to start doing his/her job. I was loading 1.5 cu ft bags of soil into my cart when I noticed a skid 30 ft away. I rolled my cart less than 10 feet past the two employees described above who were leaning against shelving casually engaged in conversation. I had passed within just 3-4 feet of them. I started to unload the 4 bags from the cart onto the skid. When I looked up hoping that the guy would offer some help, I saw that he had turned his back to a 74 year old customer who was visibly huffing and puffing as he continued his conversation. That done, I went back to the soil location and added another 2 bags to the skid. After leaving the check-out I approached a managerial-looking woman who said that she was the front of store manager. I told her about it and she walked away and said nothing. So now I went out to my suv and loaded the 6 bags of soil into it. I drove to the outside of the garden center and stopped the car. This is one giant warehouse where you can find any and everything. During a time of the Pandemic when much was out of stock for your household updates -- this place normally had overstocked items. The items in need usually is here all except for enough tile where I had to turn to another store that specialized in just tile. Not to worry, because the door, paint, hardware and other odds and ends were in stock. Ordering online was easy and so was the pickup using your coded sheet sent to you when your order is ready for pickup. I've only had a few hiccups when trying to locate my items, but going to the service desk saved the day. My new Larson Door, with Schlage Hardware and kitchen flush mound light is perfect! read more

A great medium-priced box store for things that you can need around the house from everything from gardening, to wood, tools and many household items Lots of good choices and knowledgeable people on staff. Easy in an easy out for parking if you do need assistance to load up your vehicle because you're older or have a disability, or just need some help they will be happy to help you. Most recently I have found some great Garden Rock fencing to border my flowers. In the past I've gotten sound advice for tile repair in my bathroom. I've also found some good quality tools, home fans, home heaters, and furnace filters. Also bought a patio table on sale. So lots of choices and options. read more

Just keeping the bad ratings up to date on this place. If you know everything you need already, maybe this place is good for you. However I'm not sure how the specialty departments like flooring can make a sale without someone being there to assist. Not one person offered to assist me as I waited patiently in a few different areas of the store. When I ask for help, associates are either eagerly walking away from me to avoid helping, don't talk at all and walk me to another person who can't help or ignore me all together. Even at the check out lane - I'm standing there waiting and every associate is just looking at me with a blank face offering no assistance. I couldn't tell if it was self check out or not. Everyone is just on their phone or something. I asked the manager at customer service what was going on with the employees at the store and her response was basically "what do you want" and then she gave me a tutorial on how to go through a checkout lane. Highly recommend not going here. Ever. Here's to hoping Home Depot is better. read more

They are advertising a "crazy days" sale, which spans 3 days from 9/13-9/15. They featured some good deals in the circular ad for this sale, so we checked the inventory online for each of the 3 items we wanted to buy to confirm that they were in stock before we made the drive out. We confirmed the site's online inventory count showed ample supply for the things we wanted, then we visited the evening of the first day of the sale (Sept 13) Guess what. Everything we wanted from the ad was "out". I use quotations because their site inventory shows that they have plenty but when we show up, the shelves are empty. When we ask staff about it, they say they can't find it and the inventory count must be wrong. WTF? The only reason we drove out was because their site showed that the items were in stock. Then we get there at 6pm of the 1st day of the sale, and it's all "out". Beside the fact that we weren't able to buy what they advertised due to "inventory issues", the staff (3 total) that helped us seemed dead inside and seemed like they hated their job, hated being at work on a Friday evening. We would approach floor staff with a smile on our face and say "excuse me sir/maam, can you help us find something?" Each time, the staff would react with a blank/irritated stare and say "whatta ya lookin for" or "what is it". I get it, it sucks to work retail on a Friday night. But don't take it out on your customers. Menards employees need to learn not to act like I'm bothering them by asking them to help us find something, especially with the horrible confusing store layout. This was my first time visiting Menards and I'll never return. They lost my trust. I have zero confidence that they will have advertised items in stock. I don't want to have to deal with pissed off employees who hate working there. read more

This place usually has everything I need. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I usually need quite a bit of help and I always leave confident that I received sound advice and all the parts I need to either build or fix something at my home. The only bad thing about the place is the location. It shares a driveway with a truck stop station and boy it gets congested so it takes quite awhile to enter and leave the place. The prices are generally less than both Hpme Depot and Lowe's too. If you haven't been you should try them out. read more

However, compared to other Menards it seems like they have less staff...or else staff not where I'd normally see them to make inquiries. The store is clean, the layout is good and the stock is great. Menards is a good stop. They generally have not only what's needed but additional stuff - like el cheapo widgets, food, pet food, candy and clothing. I often find that hardware and supplies are less expensive than Lowes or Home Depot. Definitely worth checking out. read more

I asked a guy a question on where to find something he completely ignored me just kept writing, I asked a girl that worked there where to find something...she said " I only count things" turned around and walked away I have never seen such lazy people, you work in customer service...so serve the customer! I've been working on houses for the past 15 years. Menard's is the best home improvement in the metro for deals. Not only do they always have great prices, they regularly have sales, including 11% off everything. The store is easy to navigate. Most of the staff is always helpful and friendly (we did have poor service at the return section and in the deck area once). read more

we went on a Saturday afternoon, why oh why would we do that. it's a busy place on a Saturday afternoon. it's a big store, lots of walking. I finally sat down in the furniture department to wait for my husband. No one bothered me there. The check out lines were all really busy. Menards is a typical big box home improvement center. Compared to their competitors, they lack in employees trained specifically in the area of expertise that they work in. I find that products are more difficult to find here, employees are hard to track down, and employees don't always know where to direct you. On one occasion we were directed to opposite ends of the store 3 times to find a product. Fork lift drivers here (and safety for shoppers) are a little crazy. Compared to their competitors, they greatly lack in blocking off aisles or having a spotter to ensure a shopper doesn't get run over. It's not my favorite store but we shop here when we need to. We do appreciate the fairly regular 11% off sale (don't forget to pick up a rebate form to send it - it's not an automatic discount), and the paper bag 15% off sale which is going on right now. read more

We normally LOVE menards however this last experience with this store particularly has made us question ever doing business again! We ordered custom Jeld Wen windows (3 of them) on April 23, 2020 and got an email confirming with an ship date of May 23, 2020. Fast forward to June 3rd. Finally get an email stating they have our order ready to pick up, great! My husband gets to the store and only one window is ready so he waits while they "look" for the other 2. He was helped by at least six staff including members of management. He was re assured they were there they were just misplaced. After 2 1/2 hrs in store my husband left with just the 1 window and the store was to call us when they found them. (We live 1 hr and 10 Mins from the store mind you) We didn't get a call so I called in and spoke with Andrew who informed me he is the delivery department manager. He said "we're looking for them, we have a line of customers out the door and you calling me is pulling me away from looking for them" Let me mention we paid about $800 for these 3 windows back in April! I told Andrew to make sure the order was placed correctly to begin with and after arguing about "still looking for them" he finally did and said "yup they were" I asked to speak with the manager of building materials thinking maybe we would get some help or at least correct info there. Wrong again! He sounded nice and assured us for certain he would get to the bottom of it. He said "I will call Jeld Wen first thing tomorrow and I will call you back and let you know what we figured out". Guess what, no call! Here we are June 5th with no idea where our windows are or what the status of the order is after we paid for them in full on April 23rd. Please do yourself a favor, STAY AWAY FROM THIS MENARDS! I thought this may have been a single incident of very poor customer service and business but after reading the reviews on this store myself I realized it's not. I usually exclusively shop for home repairs/improvement items at Menards. Since recently moving to the area the Menards in Clive is disappointing. The lack of customer service available, lack of product knowledge, incorrect product knowledge, lack of product location, item not on floor but computer shows item is in stock and rude/unhelpful service had been my experience. On four separate visits poor customer service was delivered. Otherwise I might have considered this an isolated incident. I will not be returning to this store. read more

After visiting this location at least 20 times in the last few months and I have learned quickly what they are strong at and what they lack. The strengths are they have a wide variety of inventory and they offer products that both women and men need. The areas for improvement would be that the products are not in the areas that make sense , and some of the younger associates don't give the necessary attention when assisting customers or checking out. Anyone can pick up dish soap and cat food, in addition to trim moulding and patio furniture. But if you are looking for the hedge clippers, don't look out in the garden area next to the pots, soil and trowels. You also don't want to waste time looking near the outdoor gardening glove and seed section (not in the garden area by the way). I went on a hunt that took 10 minutes and three different associates to finally find them in the patio furniture area. I also had to waste time driving home with my purchase today to realize the young associate that checked me out put down that I bought 7 shelves instead of 4. She did not separate the items when scanning & counted the metal on the sides instead. Thankfully it had only been five minutes and the courtesy clerk understood, but it was still wasted time and not the first such experience. My advice, plan on spending time looking down aisles and double check your charges before you leave. read more

Bought a small lawn mower this past Saturday. Got it home, put it together and tried to start it. Nothing. Wasted two hours trying to get the damn thing to run. Called Menards and asked how they wanted to handle things. Was told I could bring it back to exchange or return. Great. So tonight we showed up with the mower. Was told they could not take it back with gas/oil in it. I was advised to go to either one of the gas stations across the street or the truck stop next door and they would allow me to dump it there. Checked in with all three... that was a lie apparently as they do NOT have facilities to handle this. Bottom line - Menards sold me junk, lied to me and now I have to trek around finding somewhere to get rid of gas/oil. I can't wait to see what sort of hoops they have me jump through next. We built our fence and deck with Menard's lumber. The staff was very helpful and gave us great advice when choosing our materials. The layout of the store is a bit intimidating at first but there is always staff available to help guide you. Overall, we saved money and had a great experience. read more

Tyler and Scott delivered a washer and dryer to us. They were careful, courteous, and even were conscious to the point of cleaning up under the old washer and dryer before putting the new ones in. Also, we purchased new hoses to be installed, but they were not on the ticket. They gave me the stores phone number immediately. Painful experience! Shopping for dog kennels - purchased and was sent to the yard to load. No one ever came out to help with loading - waited at least 20 minutes. Could not reach panels by ourselves because they were located on the lop shelf out in the yard. Went inside and purchased the smaller height dog kennel but the dimensions were different for the smaller kennel but employee had a hard time figuring out I just needed 2 additional panels. Had to go to 2 different cashiers to complete purchase and return. Went back to yard where I had left my husband with truck and trailer - he had loaded what we need and still no one had come out to assist. read more

Several weeks ago we purchased nearly $500 worth of items from Menards only to get home and realize we left a box of screws we had paid for at checkout. Because we live an hour away I called the store to see if they could leave the box of screws at customer service and we would pick them up the next day. The female manager I spoke to informed me we would need to bring the receipt in and watch security video with her of us purchasing (and forgetting) the screws. Omg, seriously? We paid for the screws, she acknowledged a box of screws matching the ones I described had been left at checkout and reshelved, but treated us as criminals all over a $5 item! I'm not going to waste time driving an hour to watch security video over a box of screws! (But it's a great scam to reshelve and resell items customers have already paid for but accidentally left behind.) After the incident with the screws, I emailed Menards and explained the treatment we incurred. I received a reply back, and that person gave me the GM's phone number to call. I emailed back and explained I had already wasted too much time over this and didn't feel the need to call the GM. Over the next week I received email from 3 different people at Menards asking for info on the screws, receipt info, our address etc. so they could overnight us the box of screws (which they eventually did). Although it was nice that that they took action, it was frustrating to have to go through all of that for a measly $5 item. Hopefully the manager who started the fiasco was at the very least reprimanded for treating us like criminals and sent to customer service training! We have since been back to menards, but pay close attention when we are checking out to ensure we don't accidentally leave purchased items behind. To get lumber you have to order from one counter, then go pay at a normal register, then can go pick it up after that, its like an all day ordeal. Could be a lot better thought out. read more

This was just a so-so visit. I try and stick with Menards since they're more of a Midwest company, but I think Home Depot has better service and selection. I really wanted a UV flashlight to see where the cat pee in the house we're renting is located. The flashlight section had not one lick of variety. All LED crap. Nothing cutting edge or UV. I walked by countless employees who never bothered to ask me if I needed help, and I had my mouth open & looked like a complete idiot, which you would think would prompt an employee to say, "May I help you find something?". Im not an avid shopper of Menards-mostly because I don't really know how to fix things, so don't find myself needing things from here! Since it's winter time and we have a big drafty house, decided needed some plastic treatments for the windows! We were in the area so thought Menards would be the best place to grab some. I am always shocked when I go into Menards by the vast array of items they have, Especially during the holidays. They had tables everywhere with random things someone might need, and all pretty reasonably priced. We went in search for the plastic, stopping to grab some Christmas lights and decorations-which they had so many options for! The ornaments sections was a bit over picked, but maybe they will be restocking most of that before the holiday season is over. They have the more expensive glass ones, then the unbreakable-which I need due to a pesky cat, even some as low as 99 cents! Im also always surprised that Menards has grocery items now! Not really something I think about when going to Menards but its nice for it to be there if you happen to need something and dont want to go anywhere else! Well, we never found the window stuff we were looking for, after going through the whole store-I blame the Christmas section as a distraction. We probably could have asked for help, but everyone looked pretty busy and decided to use what we had a home before buying more. One thing I can never find in Menards is the restroom, and I really needed to use it this time, but I did find a delicious smelling candle, so all in all I suppose it was a successful trip! read more

Online ordering nightmares. In the past few months, my online orders have been (A) lost (B) canceled without notifying me (C) notified me that they are available for pickup... when they are not (D) told they were canceled and refunded... when they were not. The staff are friendly and trying - but their systems and processes are stuck in 1970. EDIT: it gets worse. They finally issued a refund for an online order - to the "menards.com inter-department code". I went back to the store and they told me there was nothing they could do, and that I could either "email menards.com or dispute it with my credit card company". Seriously I have never dealt with such incompetence, lack of accountability, and lack of empowerment EVER in retail. read more

I needed some mahogany for a church project this past week. I bought three boards, wrapped in plastic, and labeled as Mohogany @ $12/board (about 3 1/2" wide by 6' long). Got the boards home and took off the plastic wrapping. I've worked with genuine mahogany and African mahogany for 30 years and am an accomplished woodworkers. Menards' "mahogany" was very light in weight, fuzzed up when cutting, dented easily, sanded away like balsa wood, and took stain poorly. If this is part of the mahogany family of woods, I'd be very surprised. It appeared to be some type of luan. This is no more mahogany than a veggie burger is a good steak. I think calling this wood "mahogany" is extremely misleading if not an outright lie. Watch very carefully what you buy from Menards. Product quality is not their specialty. To be clear this is a rating on this product only. I give staff a four-star rating. They are always helpful and friendly. read more

Give us the wrong parts and guess what happened we had to come back, return the items ask for help. Help...what help forget about it. Great prices, but many products are poor quality. You really have to dig to find decent looking trim, gutters, etc. Employees are not very knowledgeable. Checkers often have no clue and ring up items wrong. Love the sales and rebates they offer. They are also very good about returning just about anything. read more

I always liked Menard's until the day they blind sided me with a 25% restocking fee. Now I know I will never place any special orders with them ever again. I ordered online but the product I ordered, I could not use. I returned the product to the store and the CS rep told me that there would be a restocking fee of $23. I was not happy about it but I could do nothing with the product so I agreed with disgust. When I arrived back at home I took a better look at the receipt and found that the restocking fee was not $23 it was closer to $45. I immediately called the store to voice my displeasure and spoke to the manager on duty who stated he could not do anything but understood my issue and would talk to the GM and get back to me. That did not happen. I emailed a complaint through Mendard's website but only received a confirmation of receipt of my email. Nothing else. When I ordered through the website there was no disclaimer stating that they charged a restocking fee if the product had to be returned. There was nothing on the receipt that they emailed to me after my purchase. There was nothing on the notification they sent to let me know the product was available for pick up. After a closer look I did find a link to a landing page where there was another link to a page that set forth the restocking fee policy. This policy should not be hidden three links deep. I ended up paying Menard's nearly $45 for the mere privilege of ordering from their website. I won't do it again and I warn any readers of this post to be aware of the policy, the other home improvement stores do not have policies like this, skip Menard's and go somewhere your business is appreciated.
