Wow, the people here were super rude! I went in to pick up food for my dog and she has been on the same food for a while with no reaction whereas she has had issues in the past changing the food. I asked where the food was that I wanted and this launched into a nutritional training. I enjoyed the update and thanked her for the info but explained that my dog struggled with changes to her diet so I'd be keeping her on the food that she does well on. The lady then went on to explain that I'm doing a disservice to my dog feeding her a low quality food that could impact her life. What?!? So you sell poor quality dog food? She was literally handing me food out of their fridge and I kept having to say that I was sorry and not interested. What high pressure and rude sales, I haven't been back! Dexters has already been a pleasure to go to. All of the food is healthy, comes from reliable sources, and natural. On top of this, the prices range the same as cat food you can get at a local pet store I've been going here since I got my first kitten. She was very sick and was starting to eat solid foods. Not knowing what she liked, Dexters was very helpful by giving me a ton of information about the foods they felt was best for the little kitten. They completed my visit with a few samples of their #1 recommendations to find exactly what she preferred. Ever since, they have been very helpful in finding the perfect supplies for her. Now she is healthy, happy, and about to have her first litter! Dexters was amazing at giving me advice for that as well. I've tried to buy at this place three times now and three times now the staff has breezed right by me with a "just a sec" to do something else while I wait. This time to wait on a customer who came in after me who ended up having interminable questions. The brands are all off and I'm sure they're good (if the price tag is any indication) but with no guidance, I'm lost. Dexter's Deli is the only doggie store I go to. Their staff is so knowledgeable and helpful (my favorite person there is Toby OMG she knows it all and so well) AND they remember my name! Godiva my Yorkie loves going in, they treat her like family. All their stuff is of the highest quality and their advice is top notch. I cannot find anything to fault them with!!! I would have given Dexter's Deli five stars except for one hiccup. We ordered a little gluten free mini cake for our rescue cairn on her anniversary with our home. When my girlfriend went to pick up the cake the woman who took the order said she forgot to order the cake. Now had she apologized I would have been okay with it, but I guess It was beyond her to show a little contrition. "I forgot" end of story. We were at the beach in Del Mar with our golden when we ran into a nice pet owner that told us about Dexters Deli. If you love spoiling your furry baby, this is the place to go. When we stepped in, a really nice lady greeted us and offered our little girl a treat. It was beef jerky and she loved it. We bought her a pup cake and beef jerk, both were devoured. I like the fact that they sell food that do not have preservatives. In fact, the beef jerky has beef and salt. How simple is that. If we are ever in the area, we will definitely return. read more

This store is cute and has lots of goodies for our pets inside. The staff is very helpful and if they don't have something you're looking for they'll start with samples for you to try that could be similar to what you need. The prices are a little high but it's worth it when it comes to giving your pets the best nutrition and natural products around. Dexter's Deli is also a huge advocate for Dog Beach in Del Mar. This store is on Camino Del Mar next to Seaside Yogurt and Zel's. So, bring in your pup or bring home a treat for kitty : ) read more

Dexter's is great! The staff is very knowledgeable & helpful, and their 5% back program is a nice touch! I have been to so many pet supply stores in the greater San Diego area (& SD county) and never have I seen such a great selection of supplements or raw foods at any others. If you are interested in raw food, or if you feed raw food to your pet, THIS is the place to go if you want a huge selection. Like I said, the supplements are also a huge draw. They sell bovine colostrum, which is great for bolstering immune systems of dogs & puppies. My husband and I recently adopted a puppy who has had two conditions that are due in part to her lacking immune system, and we are very happy to have something to aid her growth & healing. We'll definitely be back in the future for more tips from their holistic pet care experts & are very happy with the products we purchased from them! read more

For the past few months my Dachshund has had some issues with IBS, I had spent a considerable amount at the vet having several tests done and they still could not figure out what the underlying issue was. After two rounds of medications and a month of being on a home cooked bland diet I was having little success with transitioning him back to kibble. I decided to stop by Dexter's one day while I was in Del Mar and I am so happy that I did, the woman who assisted my husband and I was so extremely knowledgeable. Her recommendations were spot on. Weenie is feeling so much better and rarely has flare ups anymore. I also want to mention that the food and supplements that she recommended were all extremely affordable. I highly recommend this place to all of the doggy owners out there, the staff is super helpful and friendly. It's a cute store but not a lot of selection and they always seem to be into the pressure sale on the raw. I also think they are extremely over priced. Wow, Dexter's Deli a really great local business! The folks helped me special order an extra-small harness for my new rescue pup who is in training. We scored some yummy treats and some new toys from the 50% off bin outside! The folks who work there are super-helpful and very knowledgeable about the different products that would work for my pup. John is especially friendly, helpful, and kind to my dog who is so darn needy for attention! Gee I wonder how she got that way??? In fact everybody there is so kind and helpful and my dog always gets a treat when we visit. I have tried so many kinds of food from kibble to raw and even cooking food myself but couldn't get her to eat anything for more than a few days. We finally found a raw food brand that she really loves. Great place for unique pet treats, toys and dietary supplements. I was impressed with the variety of pet food and supplements they sell including organic options and frozen whole rabbits, poultry etc. We bought 3 organic, plant based dental chew treats (one was shaped like an alligator) which our pup loved along with poultry flavored toothpaste and a finger tooth brush. The highlight though were the doggie cupcakes !! We bought two of those. They are beautiful to look at with a bright bluish-purple color icing and our little guy loved eating it! Dexter's Deli is a perfect place to buy gifts for pets and friends with pets. The only issue is that the parking lot fits 2 cars so you'll likely need to park on the street and walk over. read more

What a great store! We were in there yesterday on a spare of the minute road trip with our dog, Lacie and we forgot our food. Luckily Dexter's Deli had it! I apologized for having to use my charge card to pay for the trial bag and they gave it to me for FREE! I wanted to pay, they insisted and loaded my rescue pup with treats and tons of love! I love mom and pop upscale pet stores like this. I hope that people in the area appreciate them. I buy Acana for her normally and for our cat. Classy pet store/bakery. Better prices and better bakery selection than another dog bakery down the street. My dog loved the doggie cupcakes! I don't necessarily always agree with their boutique brand pet food (I work at a vet and boutique brands are not always the right fit for your pet) but they have plenty of high quality foods and treats that you can't find many places. They also have a good selection of Kong and Premier toys, which are GREAT, along with Gentle Leaders. Definitely worth stopping in for a little treat for your pet. read more

This place has a ton of hard to find holistic and raw pet food. My coworker has been giving her cats the Rad Cat 100% meat frozen raw and they are thriving. So I decided to venture out to look for dog food. I was not disappointed. HUGE variety. And the staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. Having run out of dog food on a trip, discovered this charming doggy deli. I was very impressed that they had a brand new dog food my dog had been eating for a couple of weeks. It was so new, the price was not posted. Thankfully, my dog did not have to "adjust" to a different food (with the usual gastrointestinal issues) while traveling. Great selection, very well-organized, a lot of things in a compact space. Knowledgeable, personable young lady assisted. Glad I had to be somewhere, or I'd have loaded up on cute things. She did slip a few treats in a bag, and they were appreciated. Arf! read more
