Love Dexter's Deli and have only good things to say about it! First of all I had never heard of it but being a new pet parent I am sure glad I found it. It's such a great SD store that has a boutique feel and carries such a variety of products and many items I never knew existed. The staff were super friendly and love that my dog enjoyed all the treats they gave him. Both of the employees I spoke with were super knowledgeable and really had a passion for dogs. I ended up buying some flower essence and another other calming item, which I didn't know had existed and was happy I was introduced to them by the staff. I will say that I am most impressed and pleased that they fully support rescues and adoptions and we received a "share the love" gift that included some great items like a bag of food that was so generous. Not to mention that it's a woman-owned small business. I'll definitely be back and am looking forward to checking out the other locations! read more

We called after they were already closed, and not only did they still process our order over the phone, the woman we spoke with was incredibly nice and helpful and even left it out on the back step so we could pick it up. She also surprised us by leaving a bag of extra treats in with our order, which was such a thoughtful touch. She was beyond kind and accommodating. I've been a loyal customer of Dexter's Deli for a while, which makes this review disappointing to write. I stopped in recently with my dog and had an unpleasant, uncomfortable experience. While I briefly turned around to look at treats, my dog was near another dog that walked into our path. Nothing happened, there was no incident, no aggression, no chaos. But the woman behind the counter immediately scolded me and chose to critique my dog parenting skills in front of others. It felt unnecessary and condescending. As a regular customer, I would have expected a more supportive and professional approach, especially in a store that markets itself as dog-friendly and community-oriented. To make it worse, right after reprimanding me, she asked if I wanted to donate to their Valentine's Day special. The lack of awareness in that moment was honestly shocking. I support local businesses and understand that managing dogs in-store can require attentiveness, but the way this was handled made me feel judged and unwelcome. Picked up a birthday cake for my dog here! They can customize the text and it looks great! My dog loved the cake too! We got the peanut butter birthday cake and requested pink icing. There were a ton of frozen cakes in the freezer ready to go or be customized. There are a lot of gifts, toys, treats also available for purchase here. Dexter's Deli really brings it for the dogs! We usually visit the Carlsbad location. However, when in Del Mar, we stop in. All their locations are skilled at bringing just what you want or need to market in a compact space. On the most recent trip to Del Mar, I stopped in to use some points. I picked up a honey pot treat and toy dispenser. We didn't have a dog with us on this day, but I love they always have some tasty treats out for the animals visiting. My baby girl who is now one, received her puppy package from Dexter's Deli and this will make you a loyal fan of the store. Our dog trainer (Get Pawsitive Dog Training) recommended we go to Dexter's to inquire about a suitable dog food for our new puppy. To say I was impressed with my experience would be an understatement. Every sales person was beyond helpful. Patiently answered all of my questions and was SO knowledgeable. They have everything you could need/want for a new puppy, and I loved their unique selection of dog toys (much better than Pet Co/Pet Smart). They have a program for new dog owners and kindly gift you a very generous food package to trial foods/treats. Everyone was so friendly, warm, and made me and my pup feel welcome. I was so excited to see they carried RAWZ, Feline Natural, Open Farms, etc. since bigger retail stores don't typically carry them and I grabbed a bunch for my kitties! Cute pet store with dedicated parking which is always a struggle in downtown Del Mar.you can bring your dog into the store and they get free treats. Came today for the Yelp Elle Picnic offer of a free beef woofer fir my dog. This round tasty looking treat is going to be a hit. There's a wide assortment of pet supplies from toys, trays, lots of collars and leashes. We're good on pet food so I didn't look at their selection. They also have had cute shirts and hats. Can't believe I've never reviewed Dexter's Deli. We have been coming here for years-always for any of my pup's birthdays. Everyone loves their pupcakes:)) I also shop here for their food, which available in the freezer section. The bonus is, you get one free after a certain number. The food I buy requires I buy 16 before I get one free. However it costs $33/pack, so it is definitely worth it. Other food brands require only 6, 10 or 12. Another bonus is the points program. I always get $5 off during every visit because I rack up that many points:) Finally, my dogs just love going with me because they have the best staff and the best treats:) read more

Dexter's Deli was recommended to me by a friend when I was looking for a birthday cake for my pup, so this review is focused on this! I called to ask if I needed to order ahead for the cake. The cakes are all premade and frozen, where you just need to thaw it. We just got the cup cake, but there's bigger ones that a couple dogs can share! You can also get your dog's name put on the cake which is awesome. I picked up the peanut butter pupcake since my dog loves PB, and we didn't have other pup friends around to share. Our husky devoured the cake too fast for me to catch a pic but he loved it, to say the least! There's so many great food options here, and a bunch of other things for both dogs and cats, so it's truly a one stop shop! I came in specifically for the cakes, but definitely had to restrain buying so many toys and treats for my pup. I stopped by in Feb 2021, so all still during the pandemic, and they required masks to enter. They also limited it to 2 people in the store and the employees let you know if you can come in. Super amazing and tasty cake. I purchased the round cake for my dog's 5 Birthday not really expecting her to eat it because she's picky at times but I was wrong. After lightning the candle I cut a piece of cake for her and she devoured it. I had a little as well but over the 2 days I spread out when I would give her cake. I've been to Dexter's before with a friend and now that I'm a new dog dad, I thought it was time I paid them a visit to see what I could get for the newest member in my household. Kelly helped me through picking some of the best items in their store! There was so much so choose from and she was so knowledgeable about all the different kibble product, supplements, treats, and so much more! If you're a dog owner, steer clear of Dexter's Deli. I had the misfortune of visiting this place with my dogs, and the experience was nothing short of a nightmare. First off, the big lady at the front counter attitude was rude. She seemed genuinely irritated by the presence of dogs, despite the fact that it's a pet store. It was as if my dog's mere existence was an inconvenience to them. Their rudeness was off the charts. My dog had an accident and urinated a little. This infuriated the big lady at the counter and he she kicked us out. I couldn't believe how unprofessional they were. It seemed like she was angry at the fact she had to do more work. Additionally, the store itself was unwelcoming. The aisles were cramped, making it difficult to navigate with a dog. It was clear that dogs were not welcome here, which is baffling given that it's a pet store. How could they not be dog friendly? To top it all off, the selection of products was mediocre at best, and the prices were exorbitant. I was going to buy dog food and treats but given they not dog friendly, i didnt. There are plenty of other pet stores out there that actually appreciate and cater to all kinds of pets and their owners. Save yourself the trouble and shop elsewhere. read more

Dexter's Deli is a must stop in Del Mar! Such a cute boutique where you can get your pet all you need for your Furbabies. It's tradition to go to the dog beach and go to Dexter's for a birthday cake and special treat for each of our pup's birthdays, as they absolutely love the personalized cake (they can do this on the spot). The good people here are so friendly and you can tell LOVE animals. Parking is on the street or a very small lot in front. My dog is tiny and we were looking for super small sizes which they didn't have but were willing to call other Dexter's around the county to try and track down the size for us past their closing time. When we told them about our dog's fickle food habits they went out of their way recommending various food choices and gave us a variety of samples to try. I was devastated and about to cry in front of this shop when they closed the shop at 6pm on Saturday and I arrived 2 minutes late. I know what you are wondering, why did I give this place 5 star? Full story unrolling below.... Our baby was turning 1 and we invited his 4 legged buddies. The party is at 7pm and we were desperate for a good dog cake and our friends suggested Dexters Deli to us. I was in Rancho Bernardo and called and placed a order for the cake at 5:30pm and the shop was about to close at 6pm. So I requested to wait extra 5 minutes and they said they would keep separate my cake and wait for me to come Looks like there was lack of communication and the one who closes the shop, Christine did not get any memo from whom I talked on the phone. So I reached the shop at 6:02pm and saw the shop closed. I was devastated and about to cry in front of this shop. I knocked the door few times and Chritine showed up and she did close the counter and cannot do any business, and I explained the situation. Christine was closing the shop for the first time, still, she understood the situation and gave preference to the customer and gave me the cake free, yes FREE. I insisted on taking the cash, but she denied. Even though it was her first time, she handled the situation very well. I've visited this location 3x now in the last month, first to pick up pupcakes from their freezer, and then realizing how close they are (less than 20 minutes) and that they carry many of the same raw food (raw bistro, small batch) that we buy from other locations (with a farther drive) but are also willing to special order we will continue to come back. I would have been so sad, if Dexters was closed, because MomGirl promised me, all day, that because I didn't bother her to play baseball while she was trying to work, that she would take me to Dexters. First off, I have insider knowledge because I used to work here. It is as good as you expect it to be. Everyone really cares about your pets and wants the best outcome for your pets health. You can learn about pet nutrition and appropriate diets here and can trust the advice of all of the staff. They have lots of other stuff, too. One particularly unique item is the hand stamped dog tag. A long time staff member makes these at home and they are the most beautiful tags around. I love this place. They have a wonderful selection of natural dog food & 4 freezers of raw food! The staff has never been anything but friendly & helpful. Odin get treats when he comes in :) Best part - the baker that makes all the doggie treats also makes adult treats....so not only does your puppy get a treat but you can get some really good chocolate chip cookies!! We were early and there weren't very many people, but we enjoyed mixing with the other dogs and owners, and looking at the doggies available for adoption. I have only been to Dexter's Deli twice; both times to get cupcakes (see photo) for my dog's birthday. My dog loves these cupcakes. The ingredients are also human friendly, but probably not the tastiest, unless you like beef. The cupcakes are $3.50 each, so a little pricier, but well worth the splurge once a year. Dexter's Deli also has dog food (raw diet as well as regular dry/canned food), treats, supplies, etc. The items here appear to be comparable to other higher end pet supply stores, but they seem to have more raw food options. They do have parking right in front of their store as well. Service has been fine. When I've been in the store, no one has greeted me or offered to help (even though the cupcake display is right next to the register). But, the staff is friendly when I am at the register checking out. read more

It was my first time here and was shopping for a birthday. They have a great selection of frozen treats and a bunch of cakes so I doubt they ever run out. They have a good selection of sweaters and sizes but not too many in print, mostly solid colors, although we did find a leopard print in the perfect size. I went around 4pm on a Saturday, it wasn't busy at all which was very nice. The employees are extremely helpful, they can customize the cake on the spot with a variety of colors to choose from, and even gift wrapped all of the items I purchased which resulted in two beautiful presents.
