This is a well-stocked Petco store and generally is never busy. They always have a few cats available for adoption on display in crates against the wall. While they sell Betta fish, they don't carry other live animals, though they do have a selection of products for fish tanks. The treats bar is a fantastic deal. It allows you to get a few samples to see which ones your pet likes best before buying. I have been taking our dog to the grooming service here, and Kevin does an incredible job. He has years of experience, is pleasant to talk to and listens to specific grooming requests. The grooming prices are very reasonable. As a side note, they have a "happy hour" where you can walk in and have your dog's nails trimmed at a discounted rate. read more

Santee location Vetco is horrible. Unfortunately the manager there is rude, unprofessional and quick to refuse responsibility. They did not follow through with written estimate and called to schedule appointment for services without it. My dog came out with wet ears. Excuse was that she wasn't happy in there. She's a cocker spaniel and is prone to ear infections which I made very clear. Don't text me and tell me that my dog is ready if I have to finish blow drying her myself. On top of that they have the audacity to charge a dematting fee (dog was shaved anyway) of additional $7. Total came out to $67+ $12 teeth brushing + $7 de matting + $5.99 material fee. What on earth is a material fee??? So your hidden fees are simply $80 for bath/haircut for an 18 pound dog. Unreal. I took my one year old Golden Retriever in for his first "professional" grooming. I had to wait three weeks but thought they must be good and have great groomers. On a recommendation, I booked "Kevin" and upon dropping my puppy off, I had told Kevin that I wanted the expedited service (they let a limited amount of dogs out of the crates after grooming until their owners pick them up). While my dog had been crate trained as a young puppy, he loved his crate but I didn't want him to be put in one and left while the dryer was going. I wanted this to be a very good and positive experience for him, especially for his first time. I told Kevin I would be across the street shopping and for him to call me when my dog, Stetson, needed to be picked up or if he didn't like being dried. At home when we bathe him, we finish with a small hair dryer and he does not like that. About two hours later Petco called and said he was ready. I was told to pay first at the cashier checkout, which I did and while doing so I heard him barking very hysterically. He never barks! I ran over to see why he was barking and noticed blood on the top of his head! I asked Kevin how that happened and he said he was jumping in his crate a lot while being dried. I reminded him about our previous conversation while I was dropping him off and asked him why did he let Steston keep jumping while in his crate if his head was bleeding?!!! I was right across the street, for God's sake! I was so upset I left the store immediately with Stetson. On the way home Stetson was visibly stressed and didn't put his head out the window which he loves to do. He was not his usual self for the rest of the day. After sleeping on it, I decided to call the manager and explain what happened. She immediately gave me a refund but I told her while that was nice, it didn't really address the issue at hand nor no mention of speaking with the groomer. She did say she looked at the cameras in the grooming room and saw nothing. She also said Kevin was one of the most loved groomers. I found that funny and odd because in a previous review, someone else had issues with Kevin. I am writing this review as a warning to others. This should NOT have happened. BTW, when the manager offered a refund, I had to return to the store to get it and I took Stetson with me to see if he acted up while walking in the store and he became very nervous and was reluctant to enter. That's how I know he was mistreated. Goldens are very lovable dogs and he was so excited and happy when he first arrived for his grooming. He was a completely different dog coming out. read more

so confused by the good reviews for groomer Kevin. I brought my 6 month old Golden puppy in for a trim & service. he's been to Petco Mira Mesa and Taylor did an AMAZING job. you could just tell the way Kevin treated my dog that he's not comfortable with golden retrievers. I asked specifically for a trim, even pointed to a picture he showed me on his chart, and after 3 hours, our dog was completely shaved. he was also super anxious and loud which is extremely unusual. as soon as he saw my husband, he wouldn't stop barking (which he rarely does) and he kept squirming to get to him. At Mira Mesa, Taylor held him while I went to check out and he was happily wagging his tail LOVING her attention and kindness. stay away from kevin & petco del mar. update: manager at customer service said this is NOT her first complaint about Kevin and I'm in the process of getting a refund. update 2: Kelsie (spelling?) is the store manager who i shared my concerns with and she's AMAZING. empathetic, helpful, and supportive. redeems my love for petco staff. read more

I appreciate the "Unleashed" Petco stores but the bigger Petco stores are best, simply because the selection is sooo much better. It's good to go into the big Petco store once in a while so you can see how much of a step down it is to shop in their Unleashed stores. The employees are fantastic! We met a rescue there to adopt a dog and my son had an almost immediate allergic reaction to the dog's saliva. It was an incredibly stressful situation and the employees were more helpful than the rescue agency. My son is sobbing, I'm freaking out over a rash spreading across his face, and the employees were keeping me calm and helping with the dog. Been a regular grooming customer for a few years despite the fact they can only give appointments a month out and they NEVER answer the phone. Always tip well $20-$25 for two dogs. Today my bill for one yorkie was approximately $75 for a bath and haircut. Was charged $12 nail buffing fee and $5 for "materials fee" Which is for the soap they use to bathe the dog!! I approached a girl at a register and there were no other customers around. I started to say "I submitted an applica...." Michelle abruptly cut me off and said in robot fashion "we have nothing to do with the adoption agency" !!! I was taken aback by her short non caring demeanor and asked if I could speak to Kelsey but I was told she was not there. I called the next day and asked for Kelsey and after holding for some time ... Shira, who identified herself as a Manager (really?) picked up the phone and said "are you calling about your application? We don't have anything to do with the adoption agency" ... without one ounce of concern as to what I had to say. Just wow. Here's the thing: How about don't have cats for adoption in your storefront if you cannot even find it in yourself to explain the adoption process to the customer or better yet, have a little compassion when a customer is following up on an application submitted IN THE STORE? Ok, so you don't have anything to do with the adoption process but there is no need to lack common decency in how you say it. You could both use a lesson in kindness and while you are at it, customer service 101. To Shira & Michelle: kindness and compassion oh and I know ... good customer service go a long way. There is just something about coming to a Petco in Del Mar that makes me feel like my dog is getting the best grooming ever. I live closer to the Mira Mesa Petco but my husband insists on the Del Mar Petco because he really loved his experience here so we have come back and will continue to come back to the Del Mar Petco to get our dog groomed. The grooming prices are incredibly affordable and there are always discounts and coupons if you join the rewards program. As compared to private grooming places, I'm paying $10-20 less than what I would pay for elsewhere. They are really friendly here and I can't ask for better service! Worst experience I have had at a Petco store. Upon entering with my girlfriend and small kitten, we were greeted by one of the female workers who complimented us on our kitten and commented on how the kitten was "too young" to be separated from the mother. She relayed her own judgments and opinions without knowing our cat's history nor our own pet ownership experiences. She proceeded to continue questioning us and relaying her own, unwarranted, advice. Felt uncomfortable with her very unprofessional attitude. Lastly, the male employee who assisted with the checkout service was very slow and incompetent. He was very inefficient and unable to apply all the discounts available to me which I explicitly pointed out/provided him with. After scanning some items he also haphazardly threw them back into the cart, where our kitten was sleeping in her blanket. This agitated her, forcing us to take her outside for comfort. This review is for Petco, Solana Beach, CA. I brought my 6 year old Maltese here a few times recently. The grooming has gone down hill drastically. They have been bathing him poorly, if at all and he doesn't always smell clean. The worst part is he was there on Thursday and they scalped his stomach leaving visible bruising. The lady who clipped him said he behaved perfectly, so I know it was not his fault! The " GM" who sounded like she was a twelve year old, called me after I complained.She basically never apologized and made excuses. Terrible customer service! She said they can have " irritation" from being clipped. In six years, no one has ever bruised him!!The worst part is it is his birthday and he got treated so roughly. If I could give 100 stars I would! Patrick is awesome! We first took Bella, or rescue dog for her nails to be trimmed. Bella is very wary and we don't leave her so we don't stress her out. Patrick took the best care of her, and Bella was giving him kisses when we left. We scheduled another visit for a bath- and we waited outside like anxious parents. Bella was happy!! We then decided to give Bella the full spa treatment before we left for our other home... Bella was fine! She had a hair cut, trim and just looked Beautiful! And relaxed!! What I love about Patrick and Petco is the time and care... it's priceless! Bella just traveled to our other home and we had to give her a bath because she was chasing the wildlife in the backyard- and she's beautiful as ever, no stress, and happy!!! I'm a big fan of this Petco Location! I've used them for the last few years for a number of services and I've consistently received good results. I took my first dog here back in 2016 for training. Luis was the one who trained my dog and he was awesome. I forgot the exact dollar amount I paid for the complete training course from puppy to adult, but it was somewhere in the ballpark of $300. After the training course is complete the dogs get a K9 Good Citizen Certificate. Grooming is also fantastic here. I have two dogs now and they always treat my dogs like they're their own dogs. Kevin is my favorite groomer because he always trims my dogs to my liking. One of my dogs is medium size and his grooming costs around $30. My Bernese puppy is large size and I get him the $70 package that includes a bath, nail trim, de-shedding, and teeth cleaning. Make sure to stop here for all your pet care needs! read more

GREAT service. I stopped in here to pick up a few things for my newly adopted rescue cat, and I was very impressed with the knowledgeable and helpful staff. I grabbed some new toys, a scratching post, some more dry food, and on the suggestion of the friendly Petco employee I picked up two cans of wet food as well. My kitty hasn't seemed to like wet food so far, but he did like one of the two flavors she suggested. Win! Just got a second round of vaccinations at this Petco this morning. (The Vetco clinic, which I guess is technically a separate company.) The intake here is well-run (outside, with social distancing markings on the pavement to remind impatient people not to crowd), and not chaotic. While afternoons can be busy and you might have to wait a little beyond your appt time, you will be taken in sequence. All in all, not bad, considering the company schedules new visits every 7 minutes. Most impressive is how kind *everyone* is (esp to the pet), despite the time crunch. I was watching my little Squirmy get her shot today. The assistant was holding and petting her, rocking her a bit to calm her, dog facing outward so she could see me at least at first. The vet ran through her vital check, stroked the dog, gave her the vax without a squirm, then bent down to stroke her face and look in her eyes. So much love there. read more

It's always so convenient to have a neighborhood Petco. But it's even nice & convenient when that neighborhood Petco employs staff that actually loves furry babies. Loves your fury babies and also loves helping you!!! - The parent!! :) I'm always greeted when we walk through the door. Never once have I not heard a robust greeting from an employee as those two automatic sliding doors open, and I emerge with a pooch or 2, or 3 or 4! ;) I'm always asked if we need help, and I'm always asked if they may pet my pooch. It's a nice gesture, considering the field trip is solely dependent on my pooches needs /wants. - Yes, I said wants, because these furry guys already know exactly what treats they love & want me to bring home. They are fully aware of the large stuffed animal bin in the store, near the registers! They all love pulling apart new stuffed toys, so you can imagine we go through them like hot cakes. ;) So all in all, Petco, is exactly what you need it to be. A mini mall for your pooch. It's the UTC of the pooch word. ;) The salon prices for grooming are a bit steep, but great on dropping in without an appointment. Oh btw, I feed my boys Blue. I had to calm down before writing this review. I was so aggravated today by the grooming department at petco. First, let me say that the actual grooming for our dog was fine. She was groomed properly, ears cleaned, nails trimmed, and the price is standard compared to other Petcos. Now, for the customer service. I called on Thursday to make an appointment for Saturday morning. After being put on hold a ridiculous amount of times, we finally scheduled an appointment for our yellow lab/golden retriever mix dog. They couldn't 'find' our records from an out of state Petco and they needed proof of rabies vaccination. Her tag wouldn't do- they needed the ACTUAL vet paperwork. Ok, no problem. So, today, we arrive at 11:05. Yes, we were 5 minutes late. We walked in and Pam started saying how busy she was and it would be a while to groom Sophie. She had people coming in and she had to take a lunch, etc, etc, etc. I really didn't want to hear it, considered there were two other workers sitting by her. One was texting and the other was just sitting there. She couldn't tell us when Sophie would be done but she estimated 4 hours. I pointed out to her what number would be best to reach us today, since we would be out. Well, after about 3 hours I called just to find out if they had an estimated time Sophie would be ready. She hates being in a cage and I really like to pick her up with her spending minimal time in a cage. The woman who answered the phone told me they tried to call but the number didn't work. Huh? She confirmed the phone number (which was our old out of state number). Now, the only way they would have had that number is if they 'found' our file through Petco's system. No apology, nothing. We went to pick Sophie up and as it turns out Sophie had been in a cage for an hour. I told Pam I pointed out the best number to reach me that day. She quickly blamed it on someone else and then commented how patient Sophie was. Yes, Sophie is a patient dog..but right now, her momma wasn't! I had to actually instruct one of the workers to get Sophie while my husband paid for the service. And, once again, the worker was just sitting there. Please get my dog out of the cage she has been in for the past hour. After putting Sophie in the car, I glanced at her collar and tag. Sophie's tag has a LOCAL number on it. We changed it the minute we moved back to San Diego. When I arrived home, there was NO message at home saying Sophie was done. So, what the workers essentially did was call whatever number they had (from a 'file' they couldn't find) got a disconnected message, and that was it. It never dawned on them to look at her tag or call the number I left for them. There is one simple word for this- LAZY. We have always had Sophie groomed at Petco (hmm..90% of the time) and we have NEVER experienced such crappy customer service. The only reason we made an appointment here is because it's the closest to Del Mar Dog Beach and we took her to the beach beforehand. Next time, I'll take her closer to the house. I'll never use their grooming services at this location again. read more

So great!! Took my 6 month old puppy in to get his nails trimmed (I'm too nervous to do it myself) and they were very good with him. He gets really scared whenever anything of the grooming variety is about to happen, but the girls there worked together to keep him distracted while clipping his nails. I didn't make an appointment or anything and they did have another dog in there, but we only had to wait 5 minutes or so...which was fine with the pup because he got to pick out some toys and run around the store :) The nail clipping service was only 10 bucks. She truly took the time to offer great tips and helpful pointers pertaining to animal care and I am so grateful for her knowledge, generosity of spirit and genuine care. As someone with a strong background in sales, I can attest to the fact that she also is a great salesperson. I went in to get an item or two and ended up spending over $100. Only because I happened to be in that area did I give this Petco a chance to redeem themselves. Before checking out, there was a kitten for adoption who stole my heart (he was sleeping on his back, legs fully stretched outright!). I asked the girl behind the checkout counter to see that little guy. She was working hard at twirling her hair while staring into space. "I'm sorry. Everyone is busy right now. We can't take out the cats." Huh. After being rung up, but before paying, she said, "Do you want to make a donation to our Pet Adoption Foundation?" Uhhhhh..... I wanted to see one of the kittens for adoption. Did that count? HILARIOUS. "So, taking one of the kittens home today. What would you consider that exactly?" More hair twirling. More blank stares. This Petco is located in the Albertson's shopping center just off the Via de la Valle exit in Del Mar. I like shopping here over Petsmart because for the items that I need for my cats, they tend to be cheaper. They have a wide selection of food and supplies for all kinds of animals. They don't sell animals in the store but on most Saturday mornings, they have adoption days. I have seen a german shepherd rescue group there and just recently saw a group that had cats for adoption. They also groom animals and I have used them before to groom my cats and they did a pretty good job and got rid of the mats and trimmed their nails. The staff at this location are very friendly as well as helpful and that is one reason (along with the prices) that will keep me shopping here. read more
