Our two Multi Poos one 8 yrs and one 18 months thought it was ok to bark whenever they wanted and the youngest thought she could out the front door whenever she got a chance. Colleen has trained me to better understand multiple dogs over the years which has enriched the relationship I share with my furry friends. What I like is she explains what my dog is doing and why, then shows me through her actions why my response to their behavior doesn't cut it for my dog. Basically, I wasn't speaking the same language as them. One of my favorite lessons was about 13 years ago with a newly adopted pup and Colleen told me I was like the Mom who let her teenage kids do whatever they wanted to do. She explained to me (a non human kid mom) that what they wanted was boundaries because they felt like they were running the show, not me. That clicked. My dog wanted rules, she wanted to know that I had it covered and she could be a dog. Ah, ok! The way she speaks isn't condescending or know it all, very into the why of animal behavior which once she says it, seems so apparent but "why didn't I think of that?!" Thirteen years have passed since then and I'm currently on my third dog with her (I adopt seniors) and I feel I have the tools to better cope with whatever comes my way. I learned about Zoe when I was in a local Pet People and they were offering a free leash class for dogs. I jumped on it as I just adopted a new rescue. I thought Zoe (trainer) was awesome and her approach is positive and informative. I wanted to sign up for her classes right away! I ended up going with private sessions as my pup has some severe separation anxiety and Zoe came right out to my house and set up "lessons" and homework for us to work on. Her advice is spot on and if you follow what she is asking you to do you see improvement almost right away. There is no magic pill you want a trained dog you need to WORK at it and train yourself to be the "pack leader". Andrea is amazing!!!! We got our dog Henry as a rescue about a year ago. He is our baby and we love him, but we have definitely had issues from the get-go with aggression, resource guarding, and separation anxiety. I tend to blather on in many of my reviews, so I'll keep this one short and sweet. Pawtopia is AWESOME. We adopted a rescue (Cody) and were woefully unprepared for the issues that cropped up. There were definitely some days during those first couple of weeks when I thought there was no way we were going to be able to keep him. We contacted Andrea at Pawtopia (recommended to us by the staff at Camp Run-A-Mutt in Sorrento Valley) and everything changed. Andrea has been AMAZING. We immediately scheduled a private training session at our home and she gave us the tools we needs to solve two of our biggest challenges. She also gave us the tools we needed to interact with him in a more effective way, which greatly reduced our stress and frustration going forward. For the next several weeks Andrea was basically my therapist. I called or texted anytime I had trouble or questions or was simply at my wits end, and she was extremely quick to respond with patience and understanding (and of course WONDERFUL advice!). Since then we've enrolled Cody in their basic obedience training group class taught by Andrea and completed the 3rd class today. He's doing extremely well with sit, lay down, stay, and leave-it commands. He hardly ever pulls on the leash, and we're working on keeping him in our "spot-light" (right next to us). The additional confidence the class has provided my wife and me also helps make Cody more responsive to our commands and a more inclusive member of our family. Without her support during those initial days I doubt we'd have the great pupper we have today. If you have a dog that doesn't behave as well as you'd like, or you recently adopted a new dog and don't have experience training them I DEFINITELY recommend you enroll in a Pawtopia class with Andrea. 016 / 100 - 2016 YELP 100 CHALLENGE. Andrea is AMAZING!!! I mentioned in one of my other reviews that my miniature dachshund (Mocha) has been out of a control with other dogs recently. We decided to get her a professional trainer to: 1. ensure that we handled everything correctly, 2. that we could nip this in the bud before it got worse! I called after hours on Saturday (1/30) and left a voicemail. I got a call the next day (1/31) from Andrea, asking me about the situation, where I was located, and then was given a breakdown of costs. The fact that Pawtopia had a quick turnaround was, for me, an immediate +1. As we didn't want to have Mocha causing a ruckus with other dogs in the group classes just yet, my fiance and I decided to go for some personal lessons. We scheduled for Wednesday (2/3) evening. Well, we had the first lesson and we've seen changes in Mocha's behavior already. Andrea explained to us that Mocha appears to have poor impulse control, which is why she has started to bark incessantly at other dogs and people. She gave us some exercises that we could do to help better her impulse control and she's made leaps and bounds already. We took her for a walk around our neighborhood and when she got triggered into barking (hearing other dogs, seeing people/strangers), Andrea taught us a few different methods to get her to associate her fears with GOOD things (ie. throwing treats to distract her, trying to get her to focus on us, etc). Mocha also used to be huge on tugging at her leash, but Andrea gave us some advice on how to get her to go loose leash. Her behavior on leash has done a huge 180. And this was all within 1 hour!! Crazy! We've continued to use these methods today and will be sure to practice this often. Once she is better, we will probably start taking her to group classes to ensure that her reaction to other dogs goes well. We called Pawtopia after adopting a dog from The Barking Lot. Wall-E was very well behaved other than when on a leash! He was tugging and pulling all over the place. Krissy came out to our house to evaluate Wall-E and did the most amazing job. I was so impressed with her professionalism and her ability to immediately effect change in Wall-E's behavior. Her insight and instruction has really been invaluable to us. After just a week implementing her strategies, we've seen enormous progress in Wall-E's leash behavior. OMG....our trainer was INCREDIBLE! I took in a foster puppy from The Animal Pad last week. It was a LOT to take on considering that we also have 3 other dogs, one of which is also a one year old puppy with his own issues. However today, Colleen came in and basically, saved our lives! In just one hour, she taught me some incredible tips on how to properly correct our potty problems, and our out of control barking in which adding a third made life pretty challenging! I seriously cannot thank her enough for what she's left me with! I'm actually EXCITED to try all of the tips...I've already implemented quite a few, but come dinner time tonight it's ON! On a side note, when we got our puppy a few months back, we tried another local trainer that charged a LOT with a 'package' that they were more interested in selling me on our first 'free' visit. Needless to say, not only was it incredibly ineffective, but after visit 4, I asked for my remaining visits' money back. Fast forward to today, I kept asking Colleen when I needed her to come back, and she kept insisting that I may not even need her to come back if I implement what she taught me today. She also impressed that they do free 'after care' via email or text or phone. She said, if something isn't working, try to get yourself on video doing what it is and we'll likely be able to correct it with a quick email reply or call! Who does that!? Collen and Andrea are the most amazing trainers in the world. Please do not give up on your dog until you have at least had a consult with Pawtopia. They are professional, kind, generous, and so extremely understanding of every pets' needs and behaviors. My dog Tyberius was raised in a shelter. He was diagnosed with a rare generalized variant of discoid lupus erythematosus. He lived at the vet hospital that I work at (Animal and Bird Hospital of Del Mar) for nine months until I decided to adopt him. While there, Colleen taught him all the basics of behavior while the doctors simultaneously worked on getting his health back. The end product was a beautiful, sweet, extremely loving and healthy dog. Nonetheless, Ty still had a couple issues. He was kennel aggressive and territorial. When I brought him home, everything was perfect! He had no problem easing into this lifestyle and was perfectly fine meeting dogs on/off leash. Enter, Kira. My sister's siberian husky. Kira is a gorgeous 40lb ball of sweetness and ENERGY. She wouldn't hurt a fly. When my sister moved in with me and brought Kira into the house, all hell broke loose. My normally docile, lazy Ty immediately attacked her and my sister was bit trying to break them apart. After that, life was a bit crazy for a couple weeks. We had to keep them separated. After that initial fight, they had a couple more. He became afraid of her presence and she became wary of his. There was no set structure in the house. That's when we called Andrea. She came over and taught us some amazing techniques. For example, she taught us that as Kira and Ty come closer together, the intensity of praise increases. Pretty soon, our babies were comfortable around each other and now they're best friends! Andrea was so accommodating. Even after the session, she answered our questions via text and phone. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Andrea and Pawtopia. If you have dog training issues of ANY kind, Pawtopia is the way to go. My sister in law has a dog that has never really gotten along with other dogs, pretty much ever. My wife and I have a puppy that just loves to play, so it broke our hearts that we couldn't have the dogs around each other at Grandma's. So, I've had a Yelp account since 2012 and this is the first time I've been inspired to write a review! I cannot recommend Krissy with Pawtopia highly enough!! We have 3 dogs (as I now know, enough to be considered a pack) and while I love them all dearly, daily life felt overwhelming and out of control at times with barking onslaughts at the doorbell, food aggression, marking indoors, cat chasing, fence aggression, etc. After just the first visit, we made real headway on my "wish list". I am thoroughly pleased with Pawtopia as an organization. I have had the pleasure of working with both Andrea and Jake, and will be meeting Colleen this week. We have also used both group classes and one-on-one training from their selection of services. Andrea came out to our home for some one-on-one training and we were very pleased with how much she was able to cover in just the short hour we had together. Prior to her arrival, she was easy to get in touch with (both email and phone) and didn't make me feel the need to rush our conversation. She advised us to make a list before our appointment with her so we could stay on task and get more covered during our time with her. We did just that and were very concerned that we had way too much on our list. But somehow, we covered it all! We were able to go over proper leash walking which included a leisurely walk around our neighborhood. During this walk, issues we were having with Riley (our pup) surely arose and she addressed each and every one of them; these issues included Riley eating anything and everything, poor listening, terrible leash walking, proper praising of going potty to encourage house-breaking, etc. Once we were done with our walk, we came back inside and had about a 15 minute "meet" with our cats. We had been struggling with balance in the household among the three animals since Riley's adoption which was seriously impeding on Riley's inside time only leading to further problems like pushing off proper house-breaking, etc. She somehow managed to cover all of this and more during our short one hour and she did it with such grace and compassion. At no point did I feel impatient to move onto the next thing to make sure we could fit our massive list into a one hour appointment. Andrea made great use of our time together and is clearly compassionate about her job. Only a day or two after our appointment with her, I sent her a rather lengthy email regarding some relatively new issues that quickly arose with Riley and she returned a lengthy email back to me. She not only assisted us in the issue we sought her help in, but she also reassured us as dog owners that we were doing the right thing and were not alone. She truly cares about her job and the people/dogs she helps. Riley and I are currently meeting with Jake for Basic Obedience group classes weekly and we have had four classes together so far. Jake is equally compassionate about helping fellow dog owners in addition to setting our dogs up for success. He is very easy to approach and I felt no hesitancy to speak up and ask questions if I didn't understand something (this is big for me as I have major social anxiety). Jake is very clear in his instruction and is also more than willing to help if things aren't working out with your dog learning the commands. He seems to have endless tricks up his sleeve in the event that your dog isn't learning a command using a particular teaching method. He's also not afraid to have fun and laugh which is refreshing and makes the classes much more enjoyable. Sadly, I had to miss a class and reschedule it with another group and even though I will still attend that class, Jake offered his assistance to me one-on-one the following week 20 minutes before class. During that time, he calmly and slowly went over what we had missed and in that short amount of time I felt caught up despite not having met with the other group yet. Furthermore, he has spent a few minutes after two of our classes to support me in some problem areas I have been having with Riley, some of which are not covered in class. My point is, Jake is there for you and your dog, even beyond the group class setting. And he is happy to do so! I have some personal matters I needed help with regarding Riley being an Emotional Support Animal and I was struggling with finding accurate information and further training in my area and asked for Jake's help. He assured me that he would speak with his colleagues and reach back out to me with some possible solutions; he did just that. He even remembered to bring it up with me during the next class even though I forgot. So not only does Jake do a superb job at his group training classes, but he is also amazing one-on-one. I am happy to say that Riley has a success ratio that I wouldn't have dreamed of prior to beginning Jake's class (Riley has won 2 group challenges, too!). Jake has seriously created a foundation for my dog to succeed in all of the lessons taught and provided the necessary, and proven to work, fundamental teaching methods so that we can all come out victorious. Riley and I are already enrolling in the next level class because he has done so well in Jake's class! In all honesty, Pawtopia stands above and beyond anything I've seen before or even expected. I was so frustrated after I adopted my Pomeranian Finn. I tried to train him myself, but it was 1 step forward, 2 steps back with him potty training and behavior. After a lot of reading about Separation anxiety and trying pretty much everything I was starting to accept that there was not much I could do about it and Skippy couldn't be left alone, until my vet recommended Pawtopia. Zoe is the best dog trainer that I have used. She understands what makes dogs tick. I also run a breed rescue, so I have sought out advice from several trainers and behaviorists. She is hands down the best! She is the first trainer (even some well known San Diego trainers) to tell me there was help for my dog's issues. For three years prior to finding Zoe, I had been told that I just had to live with his behavior. "He was as good as he would get". My dog is trained very well to obey commands, so it isn't that I needed help with basic training. He started attacking other dogs, and once in a while even attacking our own dogs (his pack members). We are pretty dog savy people. Everything from rescue issues to police K-9 understanding. But we were at a loss for how to fix this issue. Zoe helped us to realize what we needed to do to set rules to help him. When we follow her guidelines, we do not have issues with him attacking our other dogs. My two rambunctious wiener dogs spent an hour with Colleen and Zoe of Pawtopia and markedly improved in behavior. Rather than letting them run the show, I actually gained back some power. Obedience classes were included with our adoption from Dogs Fur Days and we were so excited to get some help training our new puppy. I inquired right when we got him (he was 3 months old) and Andrea gave me a call about classes, which the one we were starting wasn't for a couple months, but she offered over-the-phone advice for some other problems/questions we had. She was SUPER helpful. The classes are definitely helpful to teach us how dogs learn, how to be patient and what not to do.
