Fernando is so patient and kind! He does a great job training humans on how to consistently train and understand our fur family. He has shown us what cues to look for and how to get the best out of our dogs while using firm and loving methods. Essentially, he teaches us how to motivate our dogs to want to do the exercises. He has wonderful follow up, as well, and doesn't push anything but rather encourages. It has been a wonderful experience and we will work with Fernando again after we've had time to practice what we learned. I highly recommend him to anyone interested in effective, long lasting training practices and strengthening your understanding of your fur babies. Thank you, Fernando!! read more

We've been working with Fernando to train our rescue dog, Cowboy, and I can't recommend him enough! From the very first session, Fernando has been incredibly communicative, patient, and professional. He took the time to really understand Cowboy's personality and our specific goals. We're currently focusing on preventing "door dashing," improving basic obedience, and walking nicely on a leash -- and we're already seeing major progress! One of the things I appreciate most is Fernando's flexibility with in-home scheduling. It's made the training process so much more manageable for our family. He explains everything clearly and always gives us practical tools and homework that are easy to follow between sessions. Cowboy is responding so well to Fernando's calm, consistent approach, and we feel much more confident as dog owners thanks to his guidance. If you're looking for a knowledgeable, helpful, and reliable dog trainer, Fernando is your person! read more

Fernando and his team are simply amazing. His degree is not in how to train dogs but in human education. Yep, you read this right. His bachelor's degree is in education and no not education for dogs but education for humans, he has taken the art of dog training to a level that has not been seen ever. Not in San Diego. Not in California. Not in the United States and really nowhere around the world. His technique is one of a kind what he does with dogs: puppies, young adult dogs and even old dogs...ones you believe cannot learn new tricks, actually can after Fernando gets to educate their parents:) So if you just got a new puppy, if you've had the puppy for some time and you're not sure what to do because she misbehaves or if you're adopted a 10-year-old dog and you don't like his behavior, just give Canine Education San Diego a call and you will be set for life! Woof Woof Are you still here reading?!!. Why call him now:) read more

Great experience with Fernando! I signed up for a training package for my Shih Tzu, and she has improved a lot. She used to get very anxious when we left the house and bark excessively. Right after the first session, we already noticed progress, and she's been getting better ever since. We just finished the third session, and she's much calmer now. Fernando uses a variety of techniques to correct behavior, and he's also very kind and gentle with the dog. I highly recommend his service! read more

Fernando did a great job identifying some of my pittie mix's behaviors which I hadn't noticed. My dog was a rescue at 6 1/2 months old and is going on 4 1/2 years. He had gone through beginner and advanced training when I first adopted him however, he had some behaviors I could not break. Fernando worked with us (my pittie and me) to identify and provide appropriate corrections as needed. My pup, being a pittie, will always be a work in progress but I have learned how to correct his behaviors, with Fernando's guidance, and my pup continues to work on being a good-est boy. I was very happy with Fernando's technique and follow up and would highly recommend him. read more

We could not be more grateful to have found Fernando. After our other Doxie passed, our grieving turned into spoiling our other doxie (Indiana) quite a bit. Eventually this manifested into lots of unwanted behaviors: incessant barking at anyone who walked into our house, barking at us when we would get up or walk around, being out of control on walks, refusing to eat unless the bowl was exactly where he wanted it, and soon that became little nips at peoples feet when they would visit. In came Fernando and he saved the day! Fernando showed us how to correct our own behaviors and expectations to better support our pet and have a happier home for everyone. Fast forward a year, and we just finished our second round of trainings. We were concerned about bringing in a new puppy as Indiana has a lot of anxiety around other dogs. Again, Fernando taught us how to develop habits and responses with our dog to help him feel safe and more in control of himself around other dogs. Which in turn helped us feel so much more confident about being able to safely bring home a new pet. After every group of sessions we've had with Fernando, our family is happier and stronger. We are still learning, and when we bring that new puppy home, he will be getting our call! We don't know what we would have done without Fernando. read more

Fernando is hands down the best do trainer I have worked with. He was able to help us tremendously with our toy poodle puppy (Frankie). I consulted Fernando for training my Pomeranian as a puppy and feel validated with how many people comment on my well behaved dog after all these years. He has been wonderful and communicative in establishing certain routines, the cues to look for, and helping me understand my dog's behavior. It was great to have him visit for in home training and get my dog to adjust to actual situations that would arise while I walked with him around my neighborhood. I really appreciate Fernando's insight and recommended him to my bf when he later adopted his own pup. read more

I could not be happier with Fernando! I was looking for help with my sweet dog's incredibly obnoxious leash reactivity and researched a lot of trainers before settling on Canine Education. I appreciated how responsive and communicative Fernando was. I also liked how straightforward and accommodating his plans are. (I hated how so many other trainers wanted me to sign up for expensive packages with numerous lessons before I even knew how responsive my dog would be to their methods. Fernando offers 1 or 3 lesson packages that can be renewed as many or as few times as you want. He also gives the option on coming to your house so he can help you train in your home environment.) Within the first 5 minutes of meeting Fernando I was incredibly impressed. It was obvious he knew dogs inside and out. His expertise of dog body language and psychology was astounding! Not only did my dog immediately respond to him but I also really appreciated how Fernando never made me feel bad about any of my dog's behaviors. He is incredibly kind and easy to work with, never condescending. He works with you on whatever changes you want to see, as opposed to working on behaviors that other people think need improvement. We have only had 3 lessons so far and it is crazy how much better my dog already is! Going on a walk with him is so much more fun as a result of what Fernando has taught me. Fernando is the real deal - he is a true dog whisperer! Fernando is the only trainer I will ever use from this point forward. read more

Fernando worked with my stubborn 1.5 year old French Bulldog and I for 9 weeks, and is very passionate and knowledgeable of his craft. He did a great job teaching my dog and I techniques to use for obedience and socialization. Fernando is also very intuitive and understands well the different personalities that dogs have and how to work with their individuality. He also has a variety of training dogs (they are his own!) that he brings around to work with your dog. Fernando is also very flexible, professional, and accommodating. Fernando is amazing to work with! He is professional, punctual and great at communication. Dexter is a 7 year old parson Russell terrier and if you know anything about terriers, you will know that they are a hyper and intelligent breed. Dexter had issues with barking at cars and separation anxiety. Fernando approached us with positive based training and changed our lives for the better. At 7 years old, there's only so many new tricks you can teach your dog. Or so I thought. Fernando's methods and advice really worked. Fernando instilled easy habits to build on our routine that would help dexters issues. For instance, Dexter wears a prong collar on walks to remind him that there is no need to bark at loud cars or skateboards. It's a simple concept but has changed our walks and gives us both peace as we move throughout our day. When Dexter gets a sibling in the future, I will work with Fernando again and would recommend him to anyone who is looking for some assistance with unruly and hyper breeds. Fernando made dog training simple and does not shame you as a dog owner at all. Thanks for your help Fernando! read more

We had a in-home consultation with Fernando way back in November 2021. We contacted him through the website and he texted and called us to schedule the in-home consultation. We did pay a fee as we were far from where he normally works from. He communicated that with us prior to the consultation. Our German Shepard was experiencing some serious leash reactivity around other dogs and a couple of other issues. When he arrived he took his time to observe how our German Shepard behaved. He asked us a lot of questions and we discussed the issues our dog was experiencing. We took the dog on walk around the neighborhood with Fernando there to observe. We did encounter another dog and he recorded the interaction. During the walk Fernando pointed out all sorts of things our dog was doing and the reason why he was doing those things. Eventually we headed back home. There Fernando played the video back and give us detailed information on what our dog was doing and why. I credit Fernando for being honest and transparent with us. He told us that the best option for our dog was either a board and train program or consultation with a dog behaviorist as our dog's issues needed that extra attention that he wasn't able to give us. Even though he was not able to solve our dog's issues, he did point us to a reputable board and train group and behaviorist. I was disappointed that he was not going to be able to solve our dog's multiple issues but was happy that he was able to provide us with so much information during our consultation. Just having someone there to explain all the little cues our dog was doing helped tremendously. read more

Over the years, I've come into contact with more than a few dog trainers and Fernando is, by far and without a doubt, the very best. The moment he stepped into my backyard and met my Bosco, I knew he was different, just not how different, but, man o man, did Bosco knew. He took to Fernando within seconds and waggled his butt around fussing and fawning like I've never seen him do with anyone. And that includes me and my girlfriend. It really was quite astounding. I have to use a walker/stroller thing to get around and couldn't seem to get Bboy to stop veering left and right and sniffing everything darn thing in sight. Fernando suggested I get a new kind of leash and give him a job to do, so when we went for a walk, Bosco knew it was about me and not him. Then Fernando demonstrated and redemonstrated and made adjustments and in less time that I'd have thought possible, Bosco and I were walking pretty as you please. Along the way, Fernando taught me some of the subtle ways he reads a dog, anticipating what may be about to happen instead of reacting once it has. Let me tell you: it was quite an education in and off itself. I could go on and on but here's the deal. As far as I'm concerned, you won't find a better dog trainer than Fernando anywhere at any price. I'm serious. And, no, this isn't a pain advertisement. It's just the damn crazy truth. Bosco and I both feel kinda blessed to have encountered him. He changed our lives for the absolute better, and I could not ask for anything more. read more

I recently adopted (end of January) a 5 year old terrier mix that I named Carlo. He's a sweet boy but unfortunately suffers from separation anxiety. Fernando is awesome! Him and I set a virtual session since we have to maintain Social Distance at the moment & I am glad I did. Since our session Carlo has been less anxious as well as (which I think is a miracle) getting inside a kennel by himself despite being 1000% scared of it. The pictures show him only going in halfway to him being fully inside (again, miracle ) Fernando gave me confidence (taught me to be patient and gentle) in being the best dog mom I can be since prior to this I had only had outside dogs as a young girl. Carlo is also aggressive towards other dogs and I won't hesitate to give Fernando a call so he can help me with this as well but for now, one thing at a time . read more

The story goes... A man packs his bags for a business trip, kisses his girlfriend goodbye, asks her to be safe, lock the doors and walks out the door. At no time did he say, "when I return home I hope there is a ten week old puppy waiting for me." Ask for it or not, that man's life has forever changed, friends, and that man is me. The puppy kisses slowly turned into puppy bites and the tiny "accidents" quickly grew into mad dashes to the front door and an increase in our paper towel budget by about 300%. Damn, Tito was a cute little mutt, but this mutt needed some training ASAP. Enter Fernando! Fernando's glowing reviews on Yelp do not lie and most definitely speak volumes. After an hour long consultation we committed to seven 60 minute sessions that could be paid in four installments of $96.00. Do the math, call around, talk to other trainers... this is a great deal! Fast forward a few weeks and Fernando is now Tito's new BFF and by the end of each and every training session the pup is pooped! That little doggy brain works overtime when Fernando is here and it's pretty incredible how much is accomplished in a one hour session. After seeing some great results we've committed to seven more weeks and absolutely love the weekly dosage of discipline and mental stimulation Tito receives. Is he the smartest pup? Nah. Is he the cutest pup? Now that's debatable, but the one thing Tito does have is some solid manners. Thanks to Fernando and his techniques our puppy really does look us in the eyes and ask us for permission to do a lot of things. He's not defensive over food, he interacts well with other dogs, he can sit and lay down (80%) of the time with arm motions and he almost to the point of rolling over on command. Sure, those are "parlor tricks" and I know what you really want to ask me. "Brad, is Tito a better dog since he started training with Fernando?" The simple answer is yes, we think so, but the better answer is that I would hate to see the dog that Tito would have been without Fernando's expert guidance. read more

I have a 2.5 year old female German Shepherd who is extremely reactive and a big spazz. She has been increasingly harder to manage in terms of dog aggression and practically dislocating my shoulder lunging on walks, as well as basic manners in the house and with guests. Fernando has blown me away with his knowledge and ability to read and manage my dog's behavior. I have already noticed major changes in her behavior in just a few sessions. Last January, I rescued my dachshund Miles at 6 months old. He was very sweet and extremely affectionate with my mother and I, but would bark and lunge at my dad and other visitors. His history was sketchy so we figured he would grow out of it. After 6 months he didn't grow out of it, in fact it seemed to get worse. Fernando came over for the first time and informed me that Miles had some intense protective habits rooted from fear and insecurity. He warned me that Miles could be a bite risk if he felt threatened enough. I ended up purchasing a package of four 90 minute sessions. Within two sessions, Miles was a changed dog. All of our regular visitors noticed. We began to enforce new boundaries (no couch privileges, crate training, different leash, food training) but with consistency he caught on quickly. At first I felt bad that he couldn't hang out on the couch and snuggle with us and our other dog, but after a short period of moping and puppy dog eyes he got over it. Pretty soon he was hanging out in his crate and cot without being asked; he loves having his own little refuge. Now we are able to walk Miles easily with no pulling. Before we weren't able to even walk by someone without him getting between us and barking and pulling like crazy. Today we walked by our neighbor's gardener who shouted hello at us and Miles could not have cared less. He even goes up to our visitors and seeks affection, whereas before he saw every visitor as a threat. He is a much more chill dog now that he doesn't feel like he constantly has to be alert and on edge. I couldn't be more thankful for Fernando's work training Miles and I would recommend him to anyone looking to improve their dog's behavior! read more

We just finished our last session with Fernando and I'm so happy with how much my dog, Koda has learned! He's truly transformed, he's a very rambunctious dog but after his lessons so many people have commented how he's more calmed and behaved! I originally was searching for a trainer as my dog had submissive elimination issues, he pees whenever he's excited and or is greeted by people. Although it wasn't an issue Fernando could correct he did have some advice/tips that helped. In addition, Koda needed obedience training as well. He now knows basic commands and is also better at walking on the leash! The one session were I was amazed at was when we were working on crate training, Koda has separation anxiety and cries all the time whenever he is in the crate. Immediately after the session, he went in his crate with no problems and as of currently he goes in whenever with no whining/crying! It really was great how quickly he learned! But of course like Fernando says everything happens with patience and we are still continuing to practice what we learn! I also wanted to note that Fernando doesn't use negative training equipment such as shock collars which I noticed that other trainers do instead he focuses more on holistic training. I highly recommend Fernando as he is very flexible, responsive , affordable and most importantly you will definitely see a difference in your dog! read more

Had an great session with Fernando from Canine Education. I'm on the board of The Rescued Dog, a local all breed dog rescue where Fernando volunteers his services. My personal dog, who was my foster I adopted last year, has been having some undesirable behaviors at the dog park so we scheduled a meeting a local off leash park. Fernando gave me some tips for managing Grayson around different energies of the dogs in the park. Not only did we address the specific issues I had called him for, we also went over some ways I can help Grayson in our home. He is extremely fearful of people and we are in the process of moving which is adding to Grayson's stress level. We finished our session with some patio training at a local dog friendly business. Fernando is awesome at treating all areas of a dogs day to day routine, he helped me identify issues I didn't even know we were having!! Now Grayson and I have a lot of homework to do but I will surely reach out to Canine Education whenever I need assistance in the future!! read more

If I could give 10 stars, I would. Fernando is an excellent dog trainer/human educator. When we adopted a 5 year old mutt, we started to worry when she would bark at the door and be hyper alert at anyone who stepped foot in our home. Fearful that she could bite a friend or a neighborhood child, we called Canine Education. Fernando came in for an intake and made us realize that our dog felt that we were her property, exhibiting behaviors that we did not realize when strangers come into the home. We set up three visits with Fernando, and after the first training session, we noticed a difference. Fernando told us what to buy in terms of a crate, a leash, a dog cot, and treats for the training. Now after three lessons, we have noticed a great change with our dog. The lessons build upon each other and we now know how to better handle situations which can stress our dog out. What you need to know before calling him is that it takes a commitment from you to be successful. This is a lifestyle/behavior change for you and your dog. This is not obedience training. If you can take the plunge and commit to help your dog live in your environment, you can do no better than calling Fernando. He is responsive on the phone for questions and truly cares about you and your dog. Also, for those in the military, he gives a military discount, which is very appreciated. read more

On August 2, Fernando the Canine Educator came to our home for a donated 1-hour initial training session to help our new rescue dog, Lola, get acquainted and settled into her new life. Fernando arrived on time as scheduled and pleasantly knocked at the door. (He was also very prompt and responsive in our text and phone messages when setting up the initial appointment.) He arrived carrying his training bag and wearing his training shirt and hat; I appreciated the professionalism right off the bat. Fernando introduced himself to us and then he met Lola our dog. He came across as knowledgeable about our dog's breed, asking questions and providing feedback and suggestions as to her grooming, her food, etc. He also appeared skilled and comfortable in handling our dog, in guiding her, and in giving her direction. In the one-hour session, we covered methods for training our dog on how to choose to ask for permission from us before exiting her crate, how to learn to look to us as her leaders for requests/direction/approval, how to encourage her to choose to go to her bed instead of sitting by the table when we are eating, and other behaviors. We liked Fernando's training theory that to instill positive behaviors, the goal is to encourage the dog to want to choose the desired behaviors of looking to us for approval through positive reinforcement. (One piece of constructive feedback/suggestion though is that it would've been neat to first hear a bit about the training theory at the very start of the session before diving into the training itself.) Fernando was also patient in explaining how teaching a dog deference behavior is different from obedience, and the benefits of each. Our initial training experience with Fernando was a positive one. Thank you Fernando! read more

I did a virtual consultation with Fernando due to the Covid-19 situation. I have a 6 year old small dog that is reactive to other dogs. He was very knowledgeable with interpreting my dog's behavior over a video chat. He believes in positive reinforcement, and patience. Fernando identified subtle, yet significant behaviors in my dog that I didn't notice, or found mundane. He mentioned that little things, such as when my dog its on top of the couch instead of under the table, are actually significant symbols of dominance. I look forward to an in-person class with Fernando to further improve my dog's behavior. read more

My husband and I became foster parents to 2 dogs rescued through Passion for Pitties (P4P) Rescue in San Diego. We were put in touch with Fernando & Canine Education through P4P to help us set dogs up for success and learn about lead training, which we were previously not accustomed to. Rory (~5y/o pit mix) and Chuck (~3y/o Lab/pit mix) had been socialized on occasion at the kennel and had originally engaged well. They had their own set of issues from their semi-unknown backgrounds, but because they initially interacted well together, we felt having two was fine. At our home, things changed drastically as we learned they were 'competing for resources' and that included us. They began to exhibit behaviors that were escalating-- not good for us, them, or a potential adoptive family to inherit. We immediately scheduled time with Fernando to evaluate and correct it immediately. Through the rescue, we had an initial evaluation/lead training session for 1 hr., plus an additional session. We have since purchased a package of 3 sessions to continue working with Chuck & Rory as the dynamics change, building on the previous sessions. (For those getting his services outside the rescue, he offers a free initial consultation- per his canine education website, and package deals, as well as a discount to those who adopt through P4P) **Check with Fernando for details in case anything has changed. :-) He has flexible schedules, is generous with time and advise. You will not be disappointed that he can help break down what seems to be difficult concepts initially into easy to grasp training that is also easy to perform As always, it is extremely important to practice. You will not be perfect; nor will the dogs intuitively do things at first. These tasks help to build trust, leadership, and confidence. You will be amazed at how quickly the dogs will pick up these new, positive skills, and how much you will learn about yourself and dog behavior! I recommend Fernando to anyone, at any level of dog training. No matter how long you've had your dog, or even if you don't think your dog needs behavior training, these visits will keep their minds sharp and their focus on you. After just one visit, everyone- including the dogs- will notice the difference!! :) read more

Fernando is amazing! I have a 4 year old Standard Poodle and a huge 9 month old Golden doodle that I thought needed some obedience training due to barking and playful interactions between the 2 that turned more aggressive. I had been told awhile ago that if I ever needed a dog trainer that Canine Education had a great trainer. I called Fernando and I can honestly say that from the initial phone call and through the 6 weeks of training he's been great! During the consultation Fernando opened my eyes to so many dog behaviors that I hadn't paid attention to. Now my dogs and I are being taught to work better together and change some bad habits we all had. Finding a good trainer isn't easy, I called a few and considered group training. For my situation one on one is what was best for us. I believe Fernando's rates are reasonable considering the amount of sessions you get and the amount of information provided. He also breaks up the fee in payments if you can't afford it all at once. I would recommend Fernando to anyone looking for a top notch dog trainer. read more

For first time owners of a new puppy, Fernando was a godsend to me and my wife. We adopted our little guy from the Barking Lot in El Cajon and Fernando's Canine Education information was included. He offered a complimentary leash lesson which was educational for both us and our dog. Honestly, it was a bit like the Dog Whisperer in that he framed the whole experience as a lesson for all involved, and not merely a "I'm your master, you're my dog" type of relationship. We purchased a month's worth of weekly dog walks and also had additional dog park lesson. He is honest and constructive in his assessment of both you and your dog, which gave me plenty of motivation to constantly improve on my interactions with my little guy. Fernando genuinely cares about the owner-dog relationship and is both an owner and foster-parent to several dogs, some of which will accompany him on the walks, which gives your dog the added benefit of socialization. He has a flexible schedule and reasonable prices, especially given some of the rates around town. Give him a try and you'll benefit even from just a couple of lessons. read more

I am so happy to have been connected to Fernando through The Barking Lot! As a volunteer, I love to spoil any dog that comes across my path. This also means spoiling my Pit Bull and chihuaua. Not long after, the dogs ran the household. Fernando came to my house and sat with me, asking questions about the dogs and their interaction with people/other animals/ us/ each other. He really cared and wanted to know about the dog before he began training. He helped me drastically improve walking our large dog on the leash, and to teach me to be the boss in the relationship. It's been tiring to walk the dogs, due to the pulling, but Fernando gave me the tools to make it an easier, more productive walk. It's only been 1 session and I already know that my relationship with my dog has changed. I would recommend Canine Education to anyone who is having ANY type of issue with their dog/pack. You will be so thankful you did it. Thanks Fernando! read more
