First visit was yesterday! Needed a cake for my puppy's first birthday! He loved the peanut butter cake that I chose!! He's a bit picky sometimes, so I opted for the smaller one. Of course, he devoured it. I didn't catch her name but the lady was super friendly and gave me a bonus chicken jerky for him as a treat for his special day! Our pup is going through chemo for lymphoma right now, and he (and we) have been itchy maniacs because he can't take his Trifexis flea medicine. Fortunately, one of my friends recommended Wondercide, a holistic flea spray made from cedar, lemongrass and hydrated silica. I ran the ingredients by my pup's oncologist's office, and she said to give it a try. Stopped by Dexter's and was greeted by a very friendly attendant. Shared my story, that we were looking for Wondercide and asked her if it really worked - she said it sure did- and that she and the other attendants in the shop use it on themselves when they get a bug bite or need to prevent a mosquito attack! Picked up a bottle, brought it home and sprayed the pup. Pleased to report - he doesn't mind the Wondercide at all - and we're now flea free! The 16oz spray bottle was around $34 (damn!) but our pup only needs a few sprays every other day or so, so I think it will last for a long time. read more

I have been a patron of the Carlsbad Dexter's Deli location as it was a more convenient location for me in the past, but since moving to a new office in Solana Beach - the Del Mar Dexter's Deli is a hop skip and a jump from me! I'm happy to report that the same amazing service happens at this location as it does at the other location! I popped into the store to replenish my supply of organ meats for my dog's food and decided to grab him some treats as well. I have to say, as someone who has been working professionally with animals for several years and is very pro-raw feeding, I am overwhelmingly impressed with Dexter's! Originally just expecting to be a lookie-Lou, I popped in to just see what was available and was immediately greeted by friendly staff. "Let us know if you need help finding anything!" Said with a genuine smile and without the salesy feel. Perfect. There is quite an amazing selection of products in this store for every pet need, from grain-free high-grade kibbles, to 5 freezers fully stocked with frozen raw food from several companies, as well as freeze-dried raw food and treats for dogs AND cats - all of which are made locally or in other US states. There was a fantastic selection of collars, harnesses, and leads, as well as food and water bowls and breath freshening and dental care products. My favorite was their extensive selection of freeze-dried supplements! I have lots of clients whose dogs are getting older and have joint and appetite problems, and I was so relieved to see they had several options of freeze-dried goats milk and coconut milk with turmeric for inflammation - this is a great, delicious, fatty supplement for any dog suffering through any kind of cancer treatment, and I'm fairly certain they carried CBD oil, though i didn't double check. Such great, holistic, safe products for sick dogs you want to be healthier and more comfortable. No one likes seeing their precious furry family members suffer. They even had a special file folder with info sheets dedicated to helping people find holistic solutions to their dogs health problems, but the thing I love most was that the first question I was asked was, "what has your vet said about your dog's dandruff?" Magic words to my ears - people who value holistic approaches while valuing medical science are my kind of pet people! Between the vast selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff, I can't say how impressed I am with Dexter's. This used to be my favorite place to shop for my pets. Staff were friendly, helpful, talkative and recognized me. They had the best selection of treats, chewers, toys and gifts. I don't know what changes were made, but they aren't for the better!! Staff are NOT helpful in either Del Mar or North Park locations. Treat selection has changed-they no longer stock the favorites. Prices have increased. I just don't feel welcome even though I would regularly spend over $100 on a weekly basis. Now I might as well just shop on Amazon. It's kind of funny how there are two gourmet pet food places right next to each other, but that is Del Mar for you. Dexter's is a great place; they really do carrier superior products than those of Petco or similar establishments. We started feeding our cats California Natural dry food last summer and have noticed if we feed them junky food they seem to get sick. There are lots of other high quality foods to choose from for dogs or cats. They also have a lot of cute toys and the one collar my cat couldn't figure out how to get off- velcro! This place is a bit over priced but it's definitely worth the trip and the rewards card they give you is pretty good. We always save a buck or two. read more

Don't be fooled by the name. ;) This is not a place to get your sandwiches. ;) I first heard about this place when I was looking online for places that sold PrimalFoods (my dog's brand choice for dog food) close to my home in UTC. Now, this is my pup's only grocery store. All of her meals and treats are purchased here. FREQUENT BUYER CARD: This is the only store I know that sells the high-quality dog food along with other holistic/organic treats. There's also a WholeFoods down the street from me which is a lot closer that sells my dog's food, but Dexter's Deli's frequent buyer card makes me come back here because I know I'll be saving money in the long run. It allows me to accumulate dollars with each purchase I make, and so when I have enough for a free bag of Primal Foods, I use it. ;) For Primal Foods, there's even a frequent buyer card for that that they've started just recently. So I'm saving a lot more! STAFF: The staff is very friendly and know their products very well. A lot of repeat customers seem to walk in the store a lot, and the staff knows some of these people (and dogs!) by name. ;) Very nice to keep it all personal like that. PARKING/LOCATION: If you are coming here for the first time, you might want to drive slow along Camino Del Mar because it can be easily missed. See some of the pictures here to get an idea of how the awning sign looks like. GPS can help, but even with GPS, I was close to missing it, and had to immediately pull in to the parking lot because I almost saw the sign too late. ;) Parking can be kinda tricky. The parking lot is small. There's probably only about 6 or 7 available parking spots to choose from, but some may or may not already be taken. It just depends what time of day you go. Pulling out from the parking lot can be a challenge if there are cars parked on the street. ;) PRODUCTS: They sell healthy versions of all foods (for cats and dogs) dry and wet, (none of the commercial foods like Purina or Science Diet). They have really good treats (at least according to my dog they do), antler bones.... A section for grooming products (even the coveted Blueberry Facial wash!) cat toys, pet beds, pet clothes, socks, doggles, a whole shelf dedicated to dog toys, a small fresh bakery section (selling birthday cakes, cupcakes, etc), puzzle toys, dog music, leashes, collars, strollers, and other dog supplies. ATMOSPHERE: A very "Del Mar" boutique vibe all throughout the store. Very friendly and laid-back. I have yet to bring my dog to this store, and then take a lazy stroll along Camino Del Mar. :) A lot of people during the weekends walking or biking along Camino Del Mar, and some even passing through here just to look around. read more

I stopped by to get some help with picking out new food for my puppy that was having some stomach problems and I was blown away by the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. Jordan helped discuss all my options and sent me home with a starter kit so my puppy could try a few new options. So far my puppy loves everything I have given him and I've already seen improvement in his stomach. I will definitely be back to pick up more food in the future. Normally you would have to order Freedom harnesses through Amazon yet they have them right there in the store. This place is great. I came here before and after getting a cat, and the staff is very knowledgeable and took the time to answer my questions and make sure I got the best food possible. So my cat is on a raw diet now, and I make the trip out to Dexter's about one every three weeks to stock up on raw food and get the free cookie they have on the counter. Selection of everything is surprisingly good for such a small-seeming store, and I've been able to get just about everything I need there, leaving me going to Petco just for the litter that she likes. All of the products inside the store were essentially the same prices as your common petsco an petsmarts, but the quality was very superior. How I've managed to not review t his fine place is beyond me. Most important is the extremely knowledgeable staff. They know dogs and cats, they know holistic. The best source in SD for grain-free and raw foods, and advice on how to feed your canine or feline friends. It's a small space, and full of wonderful things for your pets. I basically go here, before going to the vet. because they usually have holistic treatments for dogs. Great place to get supplies for you pet! I recently bought a Bengal cat who needs a high protein diet. The breeder suggested I get a food grinder, one that grinds bones, and make the 2 page recipe of raw disgusting ingredients including cow liver, chicken neck-etc... A friend told me about Dexter's having raw diet plans for pets so I went there. They were so helpful to show me each brand of raw cat food they provided me with brochures of exactly what ingredients were in the food, as well as samples. Surprisingly, there was a pre-made raw food that had every ingredient that the breeder's recipe had!!! The price is less than what I would have paid if I bought all the ingredients from the butcher and did it myself. I love Dexter's! They even give you a Dexter's card so you get store credit every time you shop! Leo and I are very grateful!!! read more

This is our 1st time here, and since we are newbies (my husband and I) as dog parents, the only place known to us for pet stores are Petco and Petsmart. And I must say, we give Dexter's Deli PAWS UP (absolutely). We came in with our pup (Phoenix), because it was recommended that we came in to have a harness be fitted for her just to be sure it is the right one, which is a great idea. Because the one that I called in for and held for me did not fit very well for Phoenix. And the ladies that helped us out especially the lady that stayed with us (which I did not get her name) through the entire search of the right harness was very knowledgeable and very patient. They were very friendly and accomodating to us. Oh and we also introduced a new treat to our pup, which was also recommended by the same lady that helped us out (Phoenix loves it, of course!). Wow. This place has it all and more. I have been here now 2 days in a row now and I am loving it here. I have always wanted to come here but have only been in the area on the weekends. I made it a point yesterday to come here to come and check it out. I have to say I am seriously impressed at the massive and overwhelming selection here. So much wholesome goodies here for anyone who is particular on what they give their dogs. Lots of nice cat stuff here too. They also have this sort of rewards/cash back plan here that is a total bonus no matter how much you spend. Parking here at peak hours or on the weekends maybe a hassle but a MUST to come check out. Dexter's Deli is fantastic! The dog food and dog toy selection is well-curated and appeals to the health-conscious dog owner. I wish there was one closer to central San Diego. My dog Rahn and I attended a workshop on dog toys and games that stimulate Rahn's problem solving skills. The class was taught by amazing dog trainers from Tully's Training. Mary and Jesse were so knowledgeable and demonstrated really fun games with the dogs participating in the workshop! They also showed us toys that were sold at Dexter's Deli and the benefits of the different types of toys. It was an amazing experience! Every dog owner should take that class. Rahn took a particular interest in one of the toys during the class and I was able to purchase it immediately after class at a special discounted price for workshop participants. So cool! The Toppl treat toy by West Paw Design is one of the best toys I've ever purchased for him. I bought the two different sizes that fit together and becomes a treat-dispensing puzzle -- worth every penny. read more

Thank you to the staff at the Dexter's Deli in Del Mar. My daughter and I went in to buy treats for our 15 year old Golden Retriever Momo for her last meal before we had to Euthanize her. She had been battling bone cancer for over a year. The staff was very compassionate and kind...we really appreciate it. I found out about this well-stocked pet store via Groupon, and after walking in, I was very happy I had bought the groupons because Dexter's Deli carries a lot of the high-quality food and treat products that I buy for my two pomeranians, such as Ziwipeak, My Perfect Pet, Primal, Bravo, Stella & Chewy's, etc. (and Sojo's, but I will never support that company given their history of causing dogs to get sick from lack of Vit D then lying about it in an attempt to cover it up, you can find the official vet findings on the Internet). After perusing the store for some time, one employee was nice enough to offer a treat to my two poms, but the others didn't really pay attention to us which was a bit disappointing (and I had to ask if they gave any samples, I had read that others received them but the employees seemed reluctant to give me some new things to try...but hey, when you have 4-5 pound dogs, a treat bag lasts a long time so I want to be sure they like it before i buy it, especially the more expensive ones). Other than that, I was happy with their selection and found some new treats to try out, such as the Bingo-Mega Buffalo Green Tripe topper (although I do have some concerns that it's a product of India...are there buffalo in India, and was it processed safely? Who knows) But the dogs like it, and it's the only green tripe product I've found that works with my dogs' small sizes. Yes, their prices are higher than other places but they are in Del Mar and I'm sure the lease is higher for that area. So in terms of selection, I give them 5 stars, and for employee interaction and help, I give them two stars, for a total of 3.5 stars since selection is more important to me. Oh, and I just received their newsletter stating which food companies they are discontinuing, and I wholeheartedly agree with and support their upcoming changes (e.g. discontinuing Wellness, Innova, Evo, and Nature's Variety), although I am disappointed to read that they gave out samples of food from new companies, since they didn't offer any to me on my two recent visits and I would have loved to learn about new small businesses entering the pet food market. I like Dexter's mission and goals, I just wish they had friendlier employees who are more eager to help customers and are more excited by the pets that visit the store. read more
