Avoid the Devoción location on York in DUMBO. On Saturday, April 11 around 5:52 PM, my two sisters were refused service there in an experience that was humiliating and deeply disturbing. They are visibly Muslim and wear headscarves. When they approached the counter, the baristas immediately told them they "couldn't make" them anything. When my sisters tried to ask what was available, they were repeatedly cut off and given no real explanation. They left thinking the shop may have closed early. But moments later they watched the staff continue serving other customers who walked in after them, including making the same drinks my sisters had asked for. This was not a misunderstanding. My sisters were singled out and denied service while others were served normally. What makes this even worse is that my sisters have supported this business for a long time. They've brought friends and family there and regularly purchased their beans. To treat loyal customers this way is shocking and unacceptable. I am genuinely concerned for any visibly Muslim person walking into this location. No one should have to worry about being refused service simply because they wear a headscarf. Management needs to investigate what happened at this store immediately. This kind of treatment has no place in any business, let alone one that claims to welcome the community. I sincerely hope management takes this seriously, investigates what happened on April 11, and addresses it publicly. read more

Don't come here to work. They have a sign that says WiFi access in the receipt, but when you get the receipt it doesn't have the information to access. We asked the staff and they just blew us off. Sat there for a minute. They were rude to every person who had any question. Turns out you shouldn't come here if you want any kind of positive or happy Interaction. Devoción was the perfect final stop for our last couple hours in Brooklyn. We were in DUMBO and needed a place to sit, breathe, and do a little writing before heading out--and this spot delivered. I ordered a latte (smooth), a cortado (bold), a leek and Parmesan turnover to save for the airplane, and a guava croissant for later too--because airport food is wildly overpriced. Prices here weren't cheap either, but at least the options were creative and imaginative, and I was happy to support a local business. Since we ended up staying a couple of hours, I went back for a mocha (I needed a photo for my Substack email next week anyway) and grabbed a bag of coffee as a souvenir. Latte art was beautiful on all three drinks. Truly lovely. Service was warm and friendly, and what really stood out was that the server remembered my name--plus I overheard her remember the name of the person ahead of me who ordered a drip coffee to go. That kind of attentiveness feels rare these days. This clearly doubles as a local hangout and work space. Most seats were filled with people studying or working, and I can absolutely see why. The warm wood paneling, living plants lining the walls, ingenious box planters suspended from the ceiling, and sunshine streaming through the massive floor-to-rafter windows made me want to stay all day. I'm honestly disgusted by what happened to my friends at the Devoción on York Street this past Saturday. They went in around 5:50 PM and were basically shut down the second they got to the counter. The staff kept telling them they couldn't make them anything and wouldn't even let them finish a sentence. My friends are visibly Muslim, and it became crystal clear what was actually happening when they watched the baristas immediately start serving everyone else who walked in right after them. It's crazy because these girls are long-time customers who always support this shop, yet they were singled out and humiliated for no reason. This wasn't some "closing time" mix-up since other people got their drinks just fine. Management really needs to look into who was working that shift and address this publicly. What a pretty coffee shop this is. Very lovely staff that work here too. And their bathroom is one of the nicest I have seen in a coffee shop! They have an open area in the front where you can sit and enjoy your coffee and pastries with friends and family. They have a wide variety of pastries. I did not get any, I only got an iced latte. The coffee to me was a bit too bitter for me. Maybe if I am back again I will try another drink or of they have a tea or something. But this place is very well decorated and feels cozy. read more

Stopped in for a coffee to see what it's all about. To experience it without any extras, I tried a cup of plain black coffee. This was the smoothest cup of coffee I've ever had. Their store is nice and their counter snacks look tasty. Biggest gripe with Devoción though is that their "large" is small. Like a classic Greek-styled coffee cart 12oz small. For $6 with an added shot, that's kinda not workable as a daily brew. read more

I kindly mentioned that I had asked for one iced, and got the weirdest attitude from the barista. She flatly said she would remake it, 30 seconds later my "remade" drink comes out and it's incredibly watery and tasted horrible. I decided to just leave it (because of her attitude), but my boyfriend had to complain because the drink was terrible. She gave him the cold shoulder and someone else (manager?) remade the drink, which of course was better. There's indoor and outdoor seating, and I think the cafe is really special for having so many plants hanging from the ceiling! I got a latte, which was good but nothing super interesting. Unfortunately, I don't think Devoción has a terribly creative / seasonal drinks menu. I love exploring different drinks and riffs on coffee, but nothing really stood out for me here. I'm curious why this location has a lower rating than the DT Brooklyn location! I found it to be easier to find a seat and brighter with friendlier service, with the only difference being that my croissant wasn't offered to be toasted (but I'd say that's on me)! On my latest trip I ordered: * Guava croissant: I love this bright pink pastry! Tried it at another location a while back and was super sad that it was sold out when I tried to get it again. I had half here and toasted the rest when I got home - 100% better when toasted despite already being amazing to start with. * Iced Americano w/ splash of oat: Your typical americano, I like that there's honey and simple syrup options to sweeten your drink. This location isn't as lush/foresty as the DT Brooklyn one, but it was brighter and felt easier to work out of. I saw the WiFi pw posted by the water station (also score for having a water station!) and seems like a great place to stop after a walk/stroll through DUMBO! Can't wait to come by again. read more

Solid alternative to Starbucks in Dumbo Devocion is a growing coffee brand in NYC. My guest enjoys their mushroom coffee....didn't know such a thing existed. Their cold brew was excellent. Wanted to spend the first 70-degree day of the year by the Brooklyn Bridge waterfront so I decided to spend the afternoon in Dumbo, which called for coffee at one of my favorite NYC roasters. I ordered a regular latte with whole milk, and I believe the house blend was Toro. This was my first time trying this one, and I appreciated the delicate flavor that still preserved a lot of the boldness typically found in medium to dark roast coffees. In comparison to the Midtown East location of Devoción, this location in Dumbo is definitely my preferred one. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside, including couches and tables, and the store gets plenty of light as it's situated right on the corner of Jay and York street directly next to the F train station with floor-to-ceiling windows. The location gets really busy, but the staff is still very friendly and efficient. The only reason I'm deducting a star is for some less than ideal aspects of the experience: some of the tables weren't very clean and some mugs were left out for upwards of 20 minutes, and there was a very long line for the single bathroom. Overall, I'll definitely return! Ended up buying a bag of coffee beans to try as espresso at home (Honey blend). Excited to try even more coffee varieties here moving forward! read more

They have a list of coffees and teas to choose from; you can't go wrong. The space is big and has ambience from the plants and the sun roof in the area. i was really frustrated trying to work from the DUMBO location. They have a 2 hour wifi per receipt which i respected by buying two drinks. the only problem is that the first wifi wouldn't expire in time for me to put the new code in. so i lost wifi in the middle of the meeting and i looked really bad to my bosses. i feel like i was forced to buy another drink and didn't get the wifi i really paid for. it's pretty unreasonable to be so hostile to "wfh" people when realistically who can sit in a cafe at 2 pm on a weekday? that is your customer base. have to rule this out of places i can come during the week. additionally i don't like their focus on flavor coming from the beans and therefore not having any syrup flavors. read more
