Just came in for a latte and a croissant. We stood at the register while the ladies behind the counter chatted to themselves and ignored us. After ordering we went to the bar behind them and took a seat. They burned our croissants, so made us some new ones. While this was happening I guess the barista finished my latte. I kindly said "excuse me, is that a vanilla latte over there?" And she said very rudely, "Yes! We've been calling it out forever and YOU can get it!" Meaning, she wouldn't be taking the two steps to hand it to me from the opposite side of the bar. She then rolled her eyes and went back to ignoring us completely. Seriously pissed. What the hell kind of customer service is this? We did nothing wrong. Likely won't return even though we've been coming here for years. She has purple hair and a nose ring. Amazingly rude and sarcastic to us. I get it, maybe you're having a bad day, but don't take it out on customers that just spent $60 on coffee and pastries. read more

The little snacks were delicious, the area is so cute and amazing in the fall, the staff was friendly, and there's a lot of seating inside and a nice space. Overall, a great experience. I only stopped by the bakery briefly, but I dined at the cookery just a couple doors down. Overall, very cute cafe with pastries and coffee. It's mostly standing room and expect a line. There's other little things to browse and buy, too. The cookery is busy and the staff are quite friendly. Unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed with the traditional eggs Benedict nor the challah French toast. Both seemed lackluster and a bit bland to me, in all honesty. The grits and cheese, however... amazing. I had it with the Benny and the taste definitely improved - wish I could take some to go. The biscuit and gravy were quite good, as well. This is my favorite place in Denver to get a latte, specifically with oat milk. Their coffee tastes so good and they have really good pastries as well. Our fav is their kouign amann which is a flaky, wonderfully sweet pastry. We usually grab our items to go and enjoy a stroll in Wash Park which is just a few blocks away. Staff are always friendly. A gem of a bakery in the Washington Park neighborhood. I really enjoyed the adorable, almost rustic feeling countertop surrounding the barista space. It was a lovely spot to enjoy our delicious croissants (ham and gruyere) and great coffee. We also tried the daily quiche was really tasty. My only qualm was they weren't able to heat it up. It may have been due to being pretty busy at the time we visited. Regardless, highly recommend. It's connected to a really great shop full of unique items worth checking out, too. read more

The baked goods are top-notch, but I still won't be going back here because the employees and owner are consistently rude to customers. You'll sometimes be standing there a long time waiting while they goof off with each other. They notice you, they just don't stop goofing off to come over and serve you. When they do, they just walk up and stare at you with a blank face without saying anything. This has been a consistent problem - it's not a one-time incident. This is a neighborhood gem :) I love coming here to treat myself at the beginning of a long week or the end of a hard week, it makes everything a little sweeter. I especially enjoy the friendly banter I have with the staff. The line is long and they make hundreds of coffees and teas! It looks like a fast-paced stressful ordeal, so I always ask how they're doing when I get to the register... they always appreciate it and open up with a big smile. One time I committed the cardinal sin and grabbed the wrong drink because I was in a rush... Great brunch spot with unique takes on classic brunch dishes. We went around 1pm on the Friday so the entire menu was available. I'm only sad we weren't hungry enough to try anything else from the menu because it all looked good. Stopped by to grab a couple baked goods before my walk at Wash Park. It was such a beautiful Saturday. On my walk over, I was approached by Hispanic young man with a sign. I didn't really read his sign that he put up, but the only thing I caught on it was 'food'. I don't believe in handing out money, but I will help with food. I told the young man that if he was hungry I would be willing to buy him some food. He only spoke spanish, but he understood my motion to come with me. Instead, he motioned and told his mom to come with me and then I realized there was a few of them out in front of the shops with signs. I told the mom to come with me. I tried to have a few failed communications with the mom. As we approached the register and I heard the young man at the cash register say something in spanish to the mom that was with me. I then asked him, 'do you speak Spanish, if so, can you help ask her how many people is in her family because I'm trying to buy a little something for her family to eat.' He asked her in spanish and he told me she said that there was 3 of them. So, I told him that I wanted to buy 3 old fashioned doughnuts, 3 ham croissants, and if he can give her 3 cups for water and that this order was for her. He complied. I then ordered separately, 1 ham croissant and 1 flourless chocolate cake. I paid for everything and gave the mom their orders and went about my day. I got back to my car and sat to eat my ham croissant before my walk. I bit into my ham croissant and it was very delicious. The croissant had a very light crisp filled with a decent amount of ham and cheese that wasn't too much. I really enjoyed it. I had the flourless chocolate cake the next day and it tasted phenomenal. Very rich, soft, not overly sweet, and melted easily with every bite. My new most favorite chocolate cake find. I will definitely be coming back for more goods and more of this flourless chocolate cake. I promise to take pictures next time. I was distracted with the needing family during this visit. I hope that they enjoyed the baked goods I got them and pray that they can find their way to a better non-struggling life. read more

Great little coffee spot with way too many temptations! Lines stayed long, but surprisingly they got my latte out quickly and it was smooth and tasty. Staff was efficient and not overly friendly, but I'd imagine constant crowds can do that to anyone. Love the architecture of the old building, leaving much of it original with a few added updates. Great neighborhood and 'old town' feel. Recommend coming by for a great coffee and baked treat, bringing the whole family for this one. read more

I've been searching for the best breakfast burrito in Denver and finally found it! The smothered burrito is to die for! The pork green chili couldn't be any more perfect. Not only was the service a "team" atmosphere, our coffee and water was always full, but the old building had so much character to it. A little confusing because the bakery is a few doors down from the restaurant. 1) the bakery gets pretty busy but the selection of pastries and desserts is excellent. Everything I got was top notch. I'd come back to pick up some yummy breakfast pastries to go! 2) the restaurant is cozy but kind of dim inside and if you're facing the window on a sunny day the glare makes it hard to see the person across the table from you. The food was okay. The portion sizes were good but my breakfast entree was nothing to write home about. Service was good. I think that despite not being immediately adjacent, bakery and the restaurant could more seamlessly merge their offerings. They seem to operate completely separately from each other. It would be nice to be able to order some pastries while eating at the restaurant, for instance. read more

Gaylord street shops are a wonderful place to eat, shop and chill.... Don't miss Devil's Food Bakery & Cookery. This small Parisian style bakery has the BEST croissants. Flaky pastries of love! So far I have tried their almond croissant, ham and gruyere and the signature pastry a Kouign Amann. Each one was better than the next! Today the savory ham and gruyere and a cup of dark roasted coffee! My children just moved into the neighborhood and I am sure we will be trying all of their tasty offerings over time! Also want to try their sister restaurant down the block that has "home style" options for 1 or 2 servings. What a wonderful place! Don't miss it if your in the neighborhood! read more

This great brunch spot is a sister concept of the Devil's Food bakery, which is a couple doors down. The name of the restaurant is on the window, however there is not a sign up above so a bit hard to see until you're in front of it. Went here for the first time on a Sunday morning and was expecting a long wait, especially since there was a long line at the bakery, but amazingly only had to wait about 5 minutes. The restaurant's decor is very homey and makes you feel as if you're sitting in the kitchen of your grandmother's house. There is a pastel green facade of a house looking into a room with old kitchen appliances on one side, and a big window that opens to the drink counter on the other. Service was quick and efficient, thanks to our server Nikola. The menu features breakfast and lunch items, of which many are a unique twist on a classic dish. Cornbread Waffle, Benedicts on homemade challah toast, Quiche Du Jour, and many appealing lunch items. So many sounded good, and it was hard to make a decision. After deciding by eenie, meenie, mynie, mo, I ordered the Myrtle Hill Hash with poached eggs and the chipotle crema on the side, and my brunch buddy ordered the Smoked Salmon avocado toast with the toast double toasted. Both dishes arrived as ordered. The hash was a mixture of bacon, onion, poblano peppers, red peppers, sweet potatoes and butternut squash with the eggs on top. Wow, was it good! My brunch buddy also raved about her Smoked Salmon Avocado Toast, which was heaped high upon a thick piece of rye bread. He's the only inconsiderate personality (well, consistent for being surly and unfriendly) in the bakery. 2 weeks ago, we stopped by for a coffee and dessert. When my husband saw he was working the counter, he turned around. We ended up at Olive & Finch. This week, my sister who was visiting out of town, wanted to have lunch at Max's. We stopped at Devil's Food after so she could take treats home. As she was asking about one item in particular, he bent down to look through the desert case to peer at the tables along the window. Looking back at her, he said, "What?" It's as if he's doing customers a favor by throwing goodies in the bags. When we left, she said, "What an axxhole." I drove her to O&F where she purchased several croissants - over $60. People have the ability to make or ruin their day. This guy seems to be consistently unhappy ~ customer service isn't for uncongenial staff. read more

I had high hopes for this place since the wait is long and it has glaring reviews. Let's just say the chicken and waffles with the gravy saved the day. The eggs benedict was not as good as Jelly's and Sassafras. But the chicken and waffles are different, and tasty. That dish saved the day. I also think the restaurant needs better organization. For example, maybe they can set up their system to text message people when their table is ready after the 1 hour wait and have a better system of timing. Just my advice. read more

Wow wow wow! I met some friends for brunch so I was able to check out the cookery (2 doors down called The Cookery at Myrtle Hill) as well as took a strudel to go from the Bakery. It was a bit confusing since I view them as two separate spots but either way, I give them both 5 stars! First the cookery... I stuck with the classic breakfast and some homemade juice (they let me mix cranberry and apple). Wow I would totally buy jugs of their juice! Next time I'll mix OJ and pineapple. The eggs, bacon, and potatoes were all perfectly seasoned and cooked! The toast unfortunately was a bit underwhelming as it was so light/airy that when it got toasted it just kind of crumbled in my mouth. Probably great bread for other purposes but not great for toast. Last but not least the bakery... I really wanted one of everything but I was good and got my husband a cinnamon roll and I tried a peach mango strudel for an afternoon snack! Just wow... the cinnamon roll (that I snuck a bite of was delightful) and the strudel was pure perfection... quite possibly the best pastry I've ever had! read more

The wait was pretty long for Sunday brunch, but what do you expect? We put our names down and went to the bakery for coffee and pastries to tide us over. Both spaces are adorable, but the bakery is especially darling. Despite the line of customers, we had no trouble snagging a table. I enjoyed my coffee, but the rugelach was chewy and dry. I couldn't tell you if it was stale, overbaked, or what, but a rugelach should be softer. The flavor was nice, though. Those at my table who got muffins really enjoyed them. We popped back over to the restaurant and waited a bit longer to get seated. In all, the wait was maybe 45 minutes to an hour at 11 on a Sunday, which seems about right for a small place that doesn't take reservations. The host was nice about it, and had a great sense of humor. Once seated, service was prompt and friendly. I had the Myrtle Hill Bloody, which was tasty and had just a hint of a bite (jalapeño vodka). My vegetarian breakfast burrito was huge! I took half home. It was good, but I think there were too many potatoes in it. I would have preferred more egg and less starch. read more

This place is the storybook neighborhood brunch place. It is located on a sun-drenched, leafy street on Gaylord Street in Washington Park. There is plenty of free 2-hour parking on the street as well as the surrounding neighborhoods. They have a bakery located about 3 doors down from the restaurant itself. I walked into the bakery and the offerings did look quite good. A variety of fresh pastries and breads were on display and the smell of fresh coffee permeated the air. The actual restaurant itself was quite good. The have a large selection of items available for brunch/lunch/dinner. The question for me at brunch is always..am I feeling sweet or savory? Today I could not decide and ordered their "classic". It comes with eggs, bacon and potatoes (which I subbed for a small salad) - for the savory craving. On the side I ordered a slice of challah french toast to satisfy my sweet tooth. I left very content. My friend ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich which she really enjoyed. Overall great place. Good food, great service. The only negative is it is a bit pricey for what you get. Two brunch entrees with a slice of french toast on the side - no coffees or adult beverages, set us back over $40 all said and done. read more

Quick breakfast stop on our last day in Denver.  Thank you to fellow Yelper Fran D. for this great recommendation! We ordered a cafe latte, almond croissant, and a peach strudel.  The pastries were still lukewarm so you know they are freshly made every morning! We visited during Covid time so indoor dining was not allowed yet.  They did have a bathroom and it was clean.  Back to the pastries the strudel had these crumbs on top and the filling was not too sweet. It was like eating a delicious piece of warm pie! I never say no to almond croissants and this has the most filling in every bite! Each bite was buttery and delicious!  I was thinking of just eating half since it was a late breakfast, but then I blinked and the whole thing was gone.  We were only at the bakery section, we missed the restaurant (a few doors down) reopening day by one day.
