Exploring the SOMA neighborhood and happened upon this great furniture (and more) gallery! WOW! They have a great assortment of merchandise from brand new to antique and custom made one of a kind items. Prices seem very reasonable and the guy working was very friendly and helpful. I look forward to returning with my wife and looking at a cool pub table that just might fit the bill in our apt. Plan to spend some time here! The variety and selection of inventory is remarkable. Each time I visit I have to walk the store three times! Once with my eyes averted up to take in all the wonderful chandeliers, once at wall level to take in the art, then a few more spins to check out the furniture. Oh, did I mention the accessories? I visited the store last week and was very pleased with the variety of inventory (furniture, artwork, lamps, accents, etc.) and range of prices. Who doesn't want to snag a unique piece at a great price? I can truly say that they have something for everybody, however, I didn't end up buying anything because I was looking for that "know it when you see it" accent chair specifically, and I didn't go ga-ga over any of the chairs. I don't fault them for this and will return in a couple of weeks to check out the new inventory. There were other things in the store which caught my eye, but I was being super disciplined that day. And also the owner/staff were SUPER friendly, welcoming, and helpful and didn't make me feel judged for not buying anything. I cannot say the same for some other SOMA stores. Lots of beautiful and affordable furnishings. Super friendly service that reminded me that I should shop locally more often. They have a crazy eclectic mix of hard-to-find things. Few things are run of the mill here. I especially love the lighting and the mid-century furniture finds. Most things are in very, very good condition. That day I wondered inside this magical place, and soon enough dropping into the shop every Saturday became a tradition. The styles vary widely, and many of the items are unusual and interesting. Greg and Mari were very professional and sweet, and even helped me with measurements. Raul assisted with exceptional design advice. They even helped with delivery options. I think I got the Cadillac service! Well I did buy a lot.... In any case, I love supporting this small business. I took some furniture to this new gallery, and the one drawback is that I wanted to BUY more before I'd even left the store! This is a gem, and has some great very gently used stuff... The things I left in the store sold pretty quickly, as well, and I got a more-than-fair price. Another plus is the artwork he displays...featuring local artists with events from time to time. This place is run by a guy who "gets" the San Francisco preference for local artisans and furniture shopping for that one-of-a-kind type of piece..really top quality without an outrageous price tag. Go in a couple of times and they'll know you and welcome you like you've been their favorite client for years. How rare is that in a big city? Also, the furniture is such a great mix of things. You can find beautiful antiques, fantastic industrial chic storage pieces, mid-century modern desks, retro-futuristic chandeliers, and cool pieces of art all over the place. Went there to see if they had any bookcases. It just so happened to be Black Friday, a day I swore I would never shop on. However, I figured this part of town wouldn't attract much attention. When I got there, I see they are having a 30% off sale! I still hate shopping, but come on. It was 30%!!!!! I found a great bookcase for $140 after discount. It was well built, very solid, and in excellent shape. A tremendous buy. But the best part was I also saw an amazing, handmade Persian carpet, 8' x 12', and with the discount I couldn't pass it up. Only $550 for a beautiful rug, with only some small imperfections on one edge. All in all, a great day for someone who would rather see the dentist than shop. I couldn't imagine getting a better deal on a carpet, and it looks absolutely beautiful in my living room. I know what you may be thinking....this guy never shops. That's a pretty low bar to clear. But hey, I'm not a complete Philistine. It's really a great rug. However, the story doesn't end here. Next door is California Carpets. I strolled in and saw a really nice 9' x 12' remnant with finished edges for only $300. Sold. I'm thinking I may not have to shop again for several years, which is great. Oops, now its delivery time. With both of these stores, delivery is extra. However, California Carpets agreed that I could use the shipper I had already arranged for at Design Plus, which meant I only had to pay one delivery charge. And I'm thinking, my dentist is going to have to work overtime to stay on top. Well, delivery day came, and when the shipper went next door to California Carpets, they couldn't find my carpet. It got to the point where he had to leave to start his route without it. At this point Raul, the salesman who helped me at Design Plus, called me, got a description of the carpet, and personally went next door to California Carpets until he could find it, and made sure all of my items made it on the same truck. Raul didn't have to do that, but I really appreciated it. That's really the best in customer service. So besides the store having a great selection, this is the kind of place you want to give your business to. Easy 5 stars. And thanks. read more

For finishing off a room or furnishing your whole place, I think this is a great spot to look for furniture. They seem to have an especially deep collection of living room furnishings. I wanted to give a shout to their customer service re consigning. Recently most of the furniture consigners in the City have closed, meaning that all the people wanting to consign their stuff are hitting these guys up, and they're flooded. I have this old desk that probably isn't worth a lot, but they treated me with respect, promptly emailed me a response to my online query, were cheerful and helpful over the phone, and scheduled me within a couple weeks to bring the beast to one of their places. These days, surly or poor customer service is more the norm than the exception, so the excellent service these folks provide is just wonderful to encounter. read more

Best Consignment Shop. Period. Design Plus is swamped, after one of the city's other major shops just went out of business. Yet Raul was able to squeeze me in on short notice. He even took some things I added at the last minute. And Design Plus keeps your items UNTIL they sell, as long as it takes! (none of that: if-it-doesn't-sell-in-45-days-retrieve-it-or-lose-it crap). They have a small storefront, but the shop is huge inside, with some of the coolest, most unique merch I've ever seen in one place. And the stuff is priced to move.
