I would say that the food is 4 star, but the friendly staff and lovely setting bump the experience up to a 5. We went around 1:00 on Saturday, and the place was packed. I was surprised given that the location is kind of out of the way. I took that as a very good sign. Having lived in San Francisco much of my life, I'm admittedly a little snobby about raw fish; however, this fish was fresh and delicious. Also, the staff is actually Japanese - they spoke Japanese at the restaurant which my daughter was able to translate for me - and they greeted everyone who came in and thanked everyone when they left. The menu is interesting and unique. I enjoyed a rice-free roll which was presented beautifully (see pic). I liked how each plate featured some pickled vegetables that were quite good. This place has the regular sushi rolls but that's not what they're really known for. They have very different types of rolls and they all are HUGE. Lone Star Roll - lobster, crab, avacado, cream cheese, rolled then deep fried Red Mountain Roll - spicy tuna on top of a California roll, wrapped in salmon Dynamite Roll - lobster, scallop, mushroom, onion and smelt roe on top of a California roll All these rolls are California rolls with a lot of bells and whistles. Each plate is so big. It's a little bit too much. You definitely can't finish an order by yourself. I had one, maybe two, pieces of each and I had enough. I think sushi should be enjoyed in a simple form, easy to eat and not overwhelming. The service here needs work. Wow! This place is really awesome. I knew I would like it the moment I stepped in. You know a restaurant is great when you come in at 1 pm on a weekday and it's packed. I really loved the quality of the restaurant. It feels like a hidden gem because it's so unassuming on the outside but once you step in, the place is lively and the food is fresh and superb. I ordered the superman burrito and we also ordered Jay's favorite. I was extremely impressed by the latter but the former was a little disappointing because there was so much rice that it overpowered the flavor of the fish inside. However the portions are really big so even if you're paying essentially what you'd pay at a sushi buffet (maybe a little less), the quality more than makes up for it. So i came here last night just to try out densetsu's sushi because of the high reviews that they've received on Yelp, and let me tell you, this place exceeded my expectations. The service was PROMPT. And the sushi was so great. I ordered the spicy salmon roll and the eel roll. They were both SO great! The eel roll was absolutely amazing! I also ordered the Miso soup and that was probably the best miso soup that I've ever had! I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. Densetsu's nigiri is definitely some of the best around, but beware if you're ordering other items off the menu. The last time I came (early this fall) I was willing to try something else with my usual order and picked the ramen. Big mistake - the pork was tough and impossible to chew, and the broth was just okay. I barely ate four or five bites before pushing it away. The salmon and mackerel nigiri I ordered was delicious, though. Salmon was the perfect amount of fatty and juicy and I love the briny taste of mackerel so that was delicious as well. In past I've gotten the tuna tower before; the portion sizes are huge but it's mostly rice and imitation crab meat, which can be disappointing if you're looking for more actual raw tuna. The servers are nice but you can definitely tell they're understaffed during peak hours, and the restaurant itself is pretty small and dark. I'm usually fine sitting by myself at the sushi bar, but if you're in a big party I'd recommend making a reservation. read more

Walked into this restaurant and was immediately greeted, they seemed to be very busy during Saturday lunch but we got seated immediately. I started off with the caviar on rice which features about around 6 types of caviar on sushi rice with a quail egg in the middle and it was good, if you like fish eggs I especially recommend this appetizer plus it's a beauty to take a picture of. I also ordered the Godzilla roll for my main entree and man this roll was hugeeee. It had tuna on too, shrimp tempura, cucumbers, and cream cheese in the middle, and was topped with crab meat and caviar. It was really good and huge! My friend got the spicy chicken bento box and it was also huge. The bento box came with rice, two potstickers, miso soup, and a salad. You definitely get your money's worth on the bento boxes cause they are huge. The actual taste of the spicy chicken was rather mehh, it tasted like Japanese fajitas, but maybe their other bento boxes would be better. Service was kind of slow, I think they were understaffed that day because there were only two waiters, and one hostess and often the hostess was helping service the waiters. The food it's self came out fast, but it was sometimes hard to get a refill on water and I needed a spoon... All in all, the sushi rolls here are large and fun (they have some really cool rolls). I'll definitely be back to try some of them, and hopefully I'll have enough room to try their tempura ice cream next time :) read more

Two glorious pages of seaweed wrapped, soy paper wrapped, and tempura battered and fried (yeah, I said it!) sushi roll options will have something for everyone, both cooked and raw fish eaters alike. We ordered three rolls between us; the boy was slightly hesitant that it would not be enough food, but as he crammed the last fat pieces into his chipmunk cheeks, he realized there was a potential we may have over ordered. The rolls were pretty immense and filling. We ordered: + crispy rice spicy tuna roll - a "roll" constructed of a crisped cube of rice topped with spicy tuna, avocado and a thin slice of jalapeno, basking in a pool of the house special sauce. the roll was not greasy, and the jalapeno gave it a perfect kick + golden special roll - lightly battered deep fried spicy tuna, crab, avocado roll served with house special sauce. asian mint also has deep fried rolls, but where theirs is craggy, super-battery to the point of grotesqueness, densetsu's is light but sufficiently crisp to the point of delightful. + dynamite roll - california roll topped with creamy scallop, baby lobster (read: crawfish) and mushrooms, served with eel sauce. served in a bowl, this dish was messy to the max, smothered with thick cream and the tiniest bits of scallop; the sauce soaked completely through each roll which melted in your mouth, if you could ever get it out of the plate without completely destroying it. They might need to consider serving this dish with a spoon to help scoop it out. Messy or not, it was delicious (and looks all the same in the ol' estomago later, right?). Needless to say (because I already said it!), this place was really unexpectedly amazing. It's weirdly located in a strip across the street from Wal-mart. You just don't expect sushi brilliance so close to a mega-conglomerate store that may or may not practice employee discrimination. read more

We've been coming here for years, loved the original owner Gina!!! Lately we've been very dissatisfied with the service, music playing and lack of helping those with dietary restrictions. For the second time we went during a lunch time with families and young kids present. The music playing was sexually inappropriate to be playing and F bombs were heard. Not one of the workers changed the music, all the staff were men/young men and it was ignored. Today as we ate my son and I just couldn't believe that music was playing. A few weeks back the waiters turned away diners at 8:30 due to closing at 9, it was terrible, they were all joking and playing around, we had to keep asking for stuff and it was frustrating. My wife and I went here for lunch today on the recommendation of a business owner next door. The place is not very big, but looks very nice, with a large Sushi bar on one side of the restaurant and tables in an L shape around the bar. They have a large menu, so it takes a while to decide what to eat, but the waitresses were extremely friendly and helpful. We finally decided to have mixed tempura as an appetizer, spicy tuna rolls and then their their bento lunch (teriyaki beef for my wife, spicy chicken for me). The bento lunch comes with miso soup, two pan fried dumplings, salad and rice. The tempura was very good, the batter not too thick and rich, just enough to make it nice an crispy without ruining the taste of the vegetables and shrimp inside. The spicy tuna rolls were wonderful, Very fresh tasting, just spicy enough without being overwhelming and the tuna melting in your mouth. The miso soup was good, too, so was the salad. The teriyaki beef was nice and soft, with a perfect teriyaki sauce that didn't overwhelm the beef. The chicken was indeed spicy, but the vegetables (sprouts, peppers, onions, etc.) balanced it out nicely. But if you're not into spicy food, don't order it! Finally, after we paid, the owner sent us a complimentary platter of their heart attack rolls, tempura fried rolls with jalapeno pieces, avocado and I believe salmon and roe with a mayonaise sauce. Very good. Overall we had a great experience and will definitely be back! UPDATE: After several more visits, I can only confirm my positive opinion of this place. Every single time the service has been great and so far we haven't had anything yet we didn't love. Chicken Yakisoba, Chicken Teriyaki, diverse other rolls and sushi pieces, everything was wonderful. Let me start this review by saying that the fish was fresh, the atmosphere was cozy, and the service was good. Unfortunately, the highlight of our meal was the saki. We started with the salmon tower, which was good, but was more cream cheese and rice than salmon. The biggest disappointments were the "Jay's Favorite" and "Cherry Blossom" rolls. These were more soup than rolls. The taste was one note, and the texture was more stew than sushi roll. Be warned if you try either of these. We also tried the red snapper and smoked salmon sushi. The flavor of both were good, but the skin portions that were left on were chewy and ruined the smooth, buttery taste that normally accompanies even the most average sushi. The finish of green tea tempura ice cream stamped a sad exclamation on the evening with its soggy-crusted exterior and plain, vanilla-bean-flavored ice cream cleverly disguised with green food coloring. Overall, the atmosphere might warrant a second chance, but we'll need another round of saki before attempting any new food selections. read more

First time dining here. Ordered nigiri, cut rolls and hand rolls. First time ever I sent back iced tea. It did not taste good. I saw iced green tea on the menu so got that instead. It tasted like ice water. The fish was good. The large scallops were great. The reason we probably won't come back is the table. Having to eat on the table the size of a shoe box is not fun. I thought service was attentive compared to other reviews. As a matter of fact, too attentive. We had servers coming to the table left and right constantly. We felt rushed and one of the sushi plates was taken away with food on it. The table can only accommodate one, maybe two cut rolls at a time so they have to take the plate away to bring another one. I ordered the popcorn lobster and totally did not expect such a big plate to come out. I thought it was just the baked crawfish but i poked under thinking that it was just rice, but instead there were 8 spicy tuna rolls! I was already full from the popcorn lobster, so i got the spicy tuna roll to go. My friends all ordered their own including hot night roll and godzilla roll. Fresh food. The place is a tad small. Probably can only hold 60 patrons inside. They do have an outside seating area, but in summer it's not feasible for lunch. They do serve bento boxes on weekends, and the salmon bento box tasted pretty good. My kid got a udon kid's meal for $6.95 (one small bowl). Ordered salmon tower for $16.99 but I didn't thoroughly enjoy it because it was a lil spicy. I like spicy food, but I don't like this type of spicy. Next time I'll order something else. Decor?
