We made reservations and upon arrival it was not busy, yet every table had a reserved sign on it …read more We tell the hostess we have reservations and they set up our table. You can see in the photos it appears they're trying to be more of a cocktail lounge/ restaurant as there was a stage in the front. Wasn't thrilled with table as the corners were broken and they gave us fold up chairs. This just gave me a local food spot feel vs cocktail lounge. As we sit down we were approached by 2-3 servers. Put in our drinks and appetizer order. Both of which were good, tasty. Our dinner was arroz con pollo and pernil. Found it odd they added bits of fried chicken cutlet on top of the areoz con pollo. Dessert was passion fruit cheesecake. We enjoyed our time but not sure I'd come back to dine in. Would likely order takeout. Staff was nice. Friendly. Food was good. Hot. Cheesecake was frozen even though it tasted good. I think with an increase in Latin/Caribbean cuisine places in the area, this is just okay. Not sure how the night scene is.

They had good flavor, and some just lacked a lil something. The kiss of fire drink was not favored at all, but the waitress had no problem swapping it out for something else. The diamond drink was really good, as well as the Moscow mule. The chimichuri steak was cooked perfect. The buffalo wings were also tasty. The tostones cups with shrimp lacked a bit of flavor, like salt and tasted a bit dry. The pernil had really good flavors. The flan tasted eggy and the churro were pretty plain in taste, no cinnamon or sugar added. The icecream helped counter balance what the churro needed. Overall, we had a great time. The DJ played some really good tunes plus the had on the boxing match on as well. After 10pm the tables get pushed to the side and people are welcome to dance.

Sazon Latino, located on Main Street in Boonton just a few steps from the NJ Transit station, is…read moredefinitely a hidden gem. It's a very casual, cafeteria-style spot with a semi-open kitchen, but don't let the simplicity fool you -- the food is incredible and the staff here is friendly and patient. The highlight of the experience is the small buffet that features a variety of freshly-made Latin cuisine -- including pulled pork, chicken and beef stews, and other traditional Latin entrees and sides. You can build your own plate by selecting one or more entrees and sides - which are priced accordingly. As a 'gringo' who wasn't entirely sure what everything was, I really appreciated them taking the extra time to explain all the different options and give me their honest recommendations. The counterstaff is bilingual and were pretty patient with my elementary school level Spanish vocabulary and grammar. I ended up going with the pulled pork platter with two sides ($7) and it was terrific -- the perfectly seasoned and tender pork, black beans and rice, and macaroni salad were delicious and very filling. You can tell they use fresh ingredients, and the portions are very generous for the price. If you're looking for authentic, home-style Latino food in a laid-back setting, this is the spot! PRO TIP #1: Bring a bottle of wine or beer from home to enjoy with your meal. Sazon Latino is a BYOB establishment and does not serve alcohol. PRO TIP #2: Sazon Latino offers free off-street parking in a small lot behind the restaurant and there's plenty of free on-street parking on Main Street.

After reading the reviews on Yelp and Google, it was clear this place was something special. About a 20-minute drive later, we arrived at Ingrid's Chicharrones, and we were immediately welcomed by Ingrid herself, which made us feel right at home. The space is small and simple, but don't let that fool you, the food and hospitality more than make up for it. Ingrid truly lives up to her reputation as a one-woman powerhouse. She runs the place with care and efficiency, and it shows in the quality of the food. Everything came out fresh and absolutely delicious. I ordered the mofongo with pork belly, and it was outstanding, so good I was already craving more after finishing it. A quick tip: half a pound of pork belly sounds like a lot, but it's not, so if you really want to enjoy it, go for the full pound. No regrets. One small downside: the place was very cold during our visit. They do have portable heaters, but it was still noticeably chilly. That said, it didn't take away from the overall experience. This is the kind of place you remember and look forward to returning to. Every time I visit my daughter from Atlanta, GA, this will be a must-stop. If you're looking for authentic Dominican food made with care and heart, this place delivers.
