While passing through New York, my daughter and I stopped to try Machu Picchu and we are so glad we did. We tried the soup special, the fish ceviche and the lomo saltado. Every dish was delicious and authentic. My favorite was the ceviche as it was perfectly seasoned and flavorful. I couldn't help but notice the other diners all had large groups and got the rotisserie chicken which was roasting on spits when we arrived. A must visit! The staff is friendly and attentive. The vibes are warm and inviting. The food was amazing. While I didn't capture a lot of photos since I was celebrating an event with friends, everyone is still talking about all of their delicious and flavorful meals. Disappointing Experience - Not Authentic Peruvian & Poor Quality Came here for the Peruvian rotisserie chicken, but my Peruvian friend found out that only two actual Peruvians work there--one in the morning, one in the evening--and the manager is not Peruvian. She was told the chicken is just regular rotisserie, not prepared with authentic Peruvian spices, despite being priced at $30. (To clarify, this was not told to us by our server Joshua, who was great.) The Lomo Saltado came without onions, and the Parihuela soup--which was pricey--had no scallops, just a salty broth. The Yucca Frita, which we loved on a previous visit, was mushy and bland this time. We were given a $3.64 discount, which didn't reflect the number of issues with the food. This establishment is pretty much a staple when I want a comfort meal with a great drink. The staff here are consistently on top of their game and treat you like family when you walk in the door. Also they have one of the best bars in Newburgh and I'm not talking about the flash or the glitz it's just a well appointed bar that's taking care of with pride and with really good cocktails being slung out. I recommend the margarita. If you're with family or a big group they have a very nice dining area at the back of the restaurant that could be reserved for bigger groups but if you're on a date it's also very comfortable and relaxing to sit back there. Chicken is their game so if you're at the bar get the chicken chicharon with the bone-in with a side of yuca frita. read more

We came here yesterday for dinner based on Yelp reviews. It smelled really good walking in - their rotisserie chickens are cooking right there! We were seated in the back, and there were a good number of people having dinner. We ordered drinks, he wanted a Stella Artois beer and I had a glass of red sangria. They came back and said they were out of the beer, so he had a different brand. He decided on the lamb dish, and I had their version of Peruvian paella. His lamb was delicious - all 4 bites. (Actually he had 3 bites of lamb because he gave me one.). This was not an adult portion of lamb for dinner. We were shocked when we saw it. It was probably, in total, about 2-3 ounces of lamb for $22.95!!!! (The picture on their menu shows a small mound of lamb chunks - definitely much more than what the plate actually contained.) My paella dish, on the other hand, was huge. The rice was pretty good, and the few shrimps and 2 scallops were delicious. Unfortunately, the vast majority of seafood in my rice was overcooked calamari. There were 3 mussels in my dish. All three were severely overcooked and dried out. It was almost as if they were cooked previously, and then cooked again with the paella. My sangria was perfect. Unfortunately that's not nearly enough to get us back in the door. read more

I'd give this restaurant probably closer to a 3.5 if I could. If you're craving Peruvian food, this will probably satisfy you just enough but I've definitely had better. To be fair, I've only tried 2 of their dishes (the lamb and the rotisserie chicken). The lamb was actually pretty good but just wish the portion of lamb was a little more generous. The chicken on the other hand, lacked some of the traditional Peruvian flavor you expect from pollo a la brasa and their chaufa (rice) also lacked something. I usually judge a Peruvian restaurant by their chicken and this one fell a little short. On the plus side, the service was good and the ambiance was nice and cozy. Made a reservation for 10 ppl. We were seated right away and as our party arrived the wait staff took drink and app orders. Once it came to ordering dinner my husband and I ordered the same dish. Perhaps there was a lack in communication or language barrier but only 1 order was placed, even though numerous times I said 2 and expressed the difference in rice types that were wanted (fried rice bs white rice). This being only the 2nd time eating from here (and the first time was takeout and my order was omitted), the pollo al ajillo was different this time. 1st time it had rotisserie chicken and this time was chicken breast cutlet. Mind you after they realized the mistake and everyone had their food, he asked if I wanted a plate for sharing to which I said we ordered 2....I received my dinner approx 10 mins later. The whole table was nearly done with their dinner. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I just don't have good luck here. Another couple had the rotisserie chicken and it was juicy and delicious. The chicken fried rice was enjoyed by many and the tamales appetizer was also a hit. The red and green sauces are really good. I was here the other day, I'll admit the food is really good, but recently the owner was kind of a dick with me, mind you, I've been a loyal customer for almost 15 years who spends minimum $200 every time I go there and I usually go at least once every 2 weeks, and the last time I went, he spoke to me in a condescending tone and was acting rude with me, I understand it was busy that night because he had people from a wedding there, and when I asked him about a table, he acted very dismissive with me acting like I was going to eat there for free and told me it would be impossible for me to get a table and the kitchen had too many orders as it is, and they were going to close in 45 min. and said there was a party of 8 waiting for a table ahead of me, I told him it was only 2 of us and whatever he could do I would wait, when I asked him if I should wait at the bar, he gave me an attitude, and said I have to wait in a condescending tone, Luckily, the waiter had better customer service skills than he did, and remembered me being a loyal customer, and told the owner he has a table for me because the party of 8 had left, and offered me a table. The owner needs to learn how to talk to his loyal customers and learn some customer service skills and not talk to Hispanic customers in a condescending way. read more

The sweet plantains and anticuchos were the perfect appetizers. The chicken skewers were not dry and the seasoning added just the right amount of flavor. The hominy and potatoes were just eh but pairs well with the meat. The arroz con mariscos is a very huge portion and definitely enough for two people to share. They did not skimp out on the seafood. The soup we had was amazing but the customer service was not so warm and welcoming. From the moment I entered the restaurant, the waitstaff never greeted me or Led me to a table. The wait staff greeted all of the nonafrican american customers prepared their table and provided great customer service. Not until a mexican family seated across from me began to have a conversation with me. Did the wait staff at Machu Picchu change the not so pleasant tone. Was very disappointed with the service and feeling that it was a race issue. Because we had searched for the best Peruvian restaurants in the area. My partner arrived moments later after finishing up a meeting with a contractor in the area we are hiring. I told him the story and he said he'd rather not purchase anything from here. I hope someone on the staff or owner reads this. And takes this advice great customer service means making all customers feel welcomed even if they are African American. read more

The lomo Saltado was more expensive than the average and there was a huge portion of rice and fries with little meat. The meat wasn't even the right cut for the dish. The sauces were not good either. When you pass by the restaurant you do not see what is happening inside. The outside is really simple and not very flashy. When you come in you see a very well decorated and great atmosphere with a classy touch and very casual feel. The wait staff is so polite and knowledge of the menu as well as super friendly, you would make conversation and almost invite them to sit down and join you. When restaurant serves bread and butter it gets high on my list of favorites. The drinks were a little small so I would not plan on getting more than a drink or two here. We ordered some steak plates the one i rememebr the name was the poor man steak and egg and let me tell you that the food was sensational! The steak cooked to perfection and the sides were super complementary to the overall taste. They have a green rice that is blended with broccoli and basil, it is the best choice here. They have a green and a pink spicy sauce and it is very difficult to judge which one is the best cause they are both so amazing. We have the flan and some coffe to close the night and the flan was creamy and not too sweet, it had the perfect balance without making you tired of sugar, in fact we wanted more by the time it was over. Fantastic little place. Food quality was amazing and the owner or restaurant manager was really nice. We will absolutely be back because there is a LOT of the menu we want to try. Service was great and the ambiance was much different than I expected. You absolutely must try the cilantro rice and cilantro chicken! For appetizers we had some kind of fried potato sticks but they weren't potatoes and we had the tamale. Both were something I would DEFINITELY recommend. We all know the statistics. One in 68 people risk being the victim of a violent crime in the city of Newburgh, versus one in 266 in the entire state of New York. It's enough to make you want to avoid Broadway at night. And yet, you'd be missing out on some pretty good Hispanic restaurants. Machu Picchu is conveniently located right off of 9W on Broadway. It's a cozy little restaurant with very attentive service and beautiful decor. I liked it, even though I really didn't get to try what I wanted. They were out of of their signature appetizer (Machu Picchu Tamales) and they didn't have any more empanadas. I tried the plátanos fritos (fried ripe plantains) and their arroz con mariscos (Peruvian paella), but I really should have tried what everyone recommended: the chicken. Is sweet red wine really supposed to be chilled? Is the calamari in the paella really supposed to b breaded and deep-fried or sautéed as it is in Spanish paella? Since I know nothing of Peruvian food, I was wondering about this during dinner. But I still enjoyed it. read more

I will definitely be back. I haven't been to Newburgh in a long time (I live 45 mins north). However, my wife and I always wanted to try this place. We finally decided to go. Due to our schedules, we were only able to go for lunch, and I didn't expect to really have the full experience, since most places have an abbreviated menu, and concentrate on getting working people in and out quickly for a low price. However, that was not the case here. Prices: There was a lunch special menu, which looked really affordable (they were all 8 or 9 dollar entrees that come with side dishes) but we ordered off of the regular menu, which was automatically given to us with the lunch specials. To me, even the regular/dinner menu seemed quite reasonable, with most entrees around $15 (entrees featuring expensive cuts of fish or steak were a little more. There was one item that was $29). Location: Ambiance was great; I enjoy places with an interior on the darker side; rich deep wood tones, stone, etc. It definitely felt cozy yet upscale. They have alcohol, including Peruvian beer, but not on draft; bottles only, (if this matters to you). Food: I ordered the "Escabeche de Pescado" which was a risky choice for me, because I often find fish dishes lacking. However, I was pleasantly surprised; the fish was delicious, prepared perfectly, complemented by excellent sides, and the portion was quite large. My wife ordered the Carapulcra which was also great (though I only tried one bite). I will upload pictures of the meal, so now you know what you will be looking at. We ordered 2 dessert items but I forgot the name of the 2nd one (and it's not on their website; I get the feeling that the dessert selection changes frequently). You can see the desserts in a refrigerated case on the way in. However, the tres leches cake was awesome. Both the wife and I loved it. Service: The waitress was very nice; accommodating and available but not overbearing. She was bilingual and had no problem conversing with us in English; which is nice, because we had some questions about some items on the menu. Negatives; I think the name is a little pandering. I guess it plays to people who know nothing about Peru, since everyone's at least heard of Machu Picchu, but it's a little like calling an American restaurant "Grand Canyon Restaurant" or a French place "Eiffel Tower Restaurant". But whatever; this is probably the best way to grab the attention of dumb Americans like myself. The only real negative about Machu Piccu is the location. Newburgh is a depressed area, and the location on the corner of Broadway and 9W does not escape from that. However, the neighborhood is not a nightmare- your car won't get stolen while you eat, and once you get inside, you forget completely about the surrounding neighborhood. None of this is enough to detract from the 5 star rating I am giving Machu Picchu; and I don't give a lot of 5-star ratings! Read my profile for more about how I rank restaurants. After 2 dine-ins and 1 take-out from Machu Picchu, I have to give them a perfect 5 stars. The food and service is flawless/top notch and makes me feel like a king. I think this is one of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley, quite possibly among the best in NY State. The menu selection is superb with a wide variety of many tasty meals and authentic flavors. The food is flavorful and tastes fresh and the meal combinations are carefully thought out. The mixed ceviche was the best I've had north of southern Florida. The Peruvian pesto and steak meal really made me happy as did the seafood paella. Calamari appetizer was cooked perfect and tasted perfect. The rice and beans, plantains and tostones sides/apps were perfect as well. Guysssssssss, THIS is good food!!!! Run don't walk. Every time I go, I devour my food before even thinking of taking pictures. I usually get the fried red snapper and it's sooo well seasoned and overall delicious! The only criticism I have is they don't open their dining area until late afternoon; so if you want to sit for an early lunch, you'll have to sit at the bar or a high-top tiny table. But to be honest, I'd eat this food in an alley if that's where it was being served because it's so good! Go! read more

Great little place. From the way it looked outside I didn't expect it to be as nice as it was inside. We have the beef skewers, Adobo de Cerdo and something else which I forget the name of, and it was all tasty. Definitely recommend their hot sauce too. This review is based on two different visits. The first time we enjoyed the food so much, we brought our dad over the second time for Fathers Day! Between these two visits we ordered quite a few dishes so I'll discuss the highlights, both good and so so. Excellent: Papa rellena Porcíon de Chicharrón - roast pork dinner, which was tender and flavorful, the only thing I didn't like was the side, which was yam slices which were quite bland Bistec a lo Pobre - hungry man's dinner, steak with fried hot dogs, fries, eggs and rice, my sister got this and I took a few bites, and it was great! Crema Volteada - flan, dense and delicious Good: Rotisserie chicken - made in a big rotisserie oven you see when your walking in. Very tender and tasty Calamari Yucca frites Sopa a la Minuta (creamy tomato soup with angel hair noodles) Cabrito a la Norteña - lamb slow cooked in a spicy sauce, pretty good but lamb was dry Okay: Cau de Mondongo - tripe with veggie/potato medely stew. Okay, but nothing special, I've had tripe prepared many different ways, and this dish was a little boring. There are dishes here that are reasonably priced, but overall it's a little pricey.
