The food was fantastic. The food was beyond fantastic. It was incredible. The service was decent. I was picking up an order for a work event. We waited ten minutes just to speak to someone. The restaurant was cozy and had a great atmosphere but staffing wasn't as great. I would be prepared to wait and not get your order in time. They didn't even seem to be apologetic that it took as long as it did. However the serving sizes were generous and we did get value for our money. Probably one of the more underrated Peruvian restaurants in Newburgh. I have to say after eating at the other joint for over a decade or so Don Fernando's has definitely stepped up their game and might have my favorite chaufa and chicken. I know that sounds like heresy but that's just the truth. Their food is spiced just right and the rice isn't oversalted. Legitimately enjoy every bite of their food. Generally I like to order a couple of appetizers before heading to the main entrées which is always the rice and the chicken. I would like to try some other things out but generally speaking you stick to what's good. The service is very attentive the place is spacious but intimate. Parking is off street on Broadway which shouldn't be a problem. There are more than a few different types of sauces but make sure you get the hot spicy one that will definitely enhance your experience. read more

Walked in with my partner after picking up iced coffees at Dunkin' Donuts for a late lunch ona Sunday work day. The place was literally empty save for one guy at the bar that was drinking a coke. Came straight off from work for my lunch break around 11am. When I came in it wasn't busy at all which is totally normal since it was early and they just opened. I ordered the pollo original (half) with my option of fries and Chicha Morada (which was the drink) The chicken was actually pretty good especially for a $13 dollar dish. I've tried other smaller restaurants just like Don Fernando's and I was quite surprised. Usually typical start up restaurants that aren't as big as others give you a dry chicken since I guess they're trying to make the impression of a faster delivery time when it comes to customers. Although our meal came fast ( especially since we came early) the Chicken was thick and tender but was not too dry, definitely had some juice to spare but not a lot which I prefer to be quite honest. The fries were okay nothing special, and I don't quite see myself as a fries expert per say so I just ate those without being to critical. The main thing that got me hooked was the drink. THE CHICHA MORADA! Man can I just say I've tried this drink quite a few times before, the drink itself is quite appealing, this purple fruit juice, originally from Peru has such a refreshing flavor and mildly sweet ( something that I'll definitely come back for). On a key note, the place is definitely not the most elegant, so you can come however you please. (I'm not sure at night though since as I said I can super early). The setting outside the restaurant is diverse, like really diverse and can feel the culture vibrating through the lens of your eyes. Coming in Don Fernando's I felt safe and at home. The servers were genuine and innocent and were very kind. This place is perfect for late night dates and family gatherings. i had lunch here with my friend today and i ordered chaufa mixto, being a fan of the Peruvian version of fried rice, i love it. the rice was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. the steak, chicken and pork, which comes with the mixto version were all well cooked and not under or over cooked. glad they had chunks of scrambled eggs rather then bits mixed in the rice, to my surprised they cook the pork for the rice similar to Chinese pork ribs called char sui, that floored me how awesome the dish became for me. all in all i left full from just have the dish. i so want to try most of the other dishes their since i recently a few years back got into Peruvian, it was fairly priced their consider other Peruvian restaurants in the area have the same price range. the service was nice, they were friendly enough and seated us right away. nice first visit i say read more

Unfortunately, it was not a good experience. The service was extremely SLOW. Inexcusably Slow! This was surprising considering we were the only ones dining in the restaurant (this was a big clue). They didn't have smoothies, fried yucca or any other soda than coke. After the long wait, they brought out the tostones and sweet plantains. Neither looked appetizing. After tasting them, our suspicions were confirmed. The "tostones" were sweet, which they are not suppose to be. The roasted chicken was bland and did not taste fresh. Don Fernando always wants to present like they are first class restaurant. However, they're a rip off joint and they're food isn't even that good. And whatever you do don't believe their online menu. Apparently it is a farce. They will charge you anywhere from 5 to 10 dollars more than they advertise. Save your money and aggrevation. Go somewhere else. read more

A second visit last week made me give them 5 stars this time, I had the Chupe de Camarones which was Delicious and the presentation was amazing, it's a big big serving, easily shared by 3 to 4 people. My friend had the Bistek a lo Pobre and was very happy with it, we met the owners and all the staff was very attentive and helpful. I am a regular now since I have moved to the area last year, so far the best Peruvian Restaurant in Orange County. The owners are very nice and warm, they have a wide selection of desserts and even lucuma ice cream imported from Peru (yummy!), I go to this establishment probably more than I go to the other two Peruvian restaurants, mainly because the decor is nice (no gaudy depiction of Machu Picchu rendered on velvet, or oversized Tumis tha could give someone a concussion if it fell from the wall), the owners are courteous and the chicha morada is AMAZING and served in the largest glasses I have ever seen. I have found, however, that the food quality is very uneven. I have had one of the best chupe de camarones of my life there, but also probably the worst bistek encebollado ever, good cebiche, very good Pollo a La Brasa, the carapulcra not too hot, neither was the aji de gallina. Picked up some itwms for dinner the other night. The Lomo saltado had good flavor, however not enough broth. The chupe de camores (shrimp soup) was good, but it missed some ingredients from other soups I've had, such as cheese, rice, corn. The pollo familia was very good, (rotisserie chicken). The Arroz chaufa (fried rice with chicken) had good flavor. The papa huancaina (potato with sauce) jad a vwry good flavor. All in all the food was worth the trip. I've had lunch here 3 additional times since my last visit. The food is great, but the star of the show is their yellow hot sauce. I've never had anything like it before. This stuff makes your mouth sing. Couldn't eat lunch there today because they are closed on Mondays. Went to Don Fernando's for the first time recently after seeing many Facebook updates from them over the last month or so. Normally we frequent Machu Pichu in Newburgh when we want Peruvian, but we also like to try new local establishments whenever possible, so why not give Don Fernando's a try. The inside is decorated nicely, with comfortable chairs and roomy tables. The menu is not nearly as expansive as Machu Pichu but there is a nice selection of appetizers, seafood, poultry, and meat dishes. The first thing we noticed is they didn't have a liquor license...not a major problem but my wife and I were in the mood for a coctail. We decided to skip the appetizers as generally Puruvian fook is ample and filling-my wife ordered a medly of seafood in a cilantro & potato infused yellow sauce with rice, which she found somewhat bland (no cilantro to be found), the potatoes overcooked, and the calimari chewy. Plenty of shrimp, a few clams & mussels though, in a nice sized portion. I had grilled tilapia, shrimp, and calamari in a spicy garlic cream sauce over white rice, which actually was rather good. Plenty of seafood, the tilapia filet was nicely done and crispy, and a well cooked potato wedge also added a nice touch. The sauce was flavorful with a bit of heat, and I added some of their peruvian hot sauce for added spice. Our meal came out to $45 before tip (2 entress and 2 sodas) which is pretty average for Peruvian in Newburgh. Service was friendly and attentive. Overall, Don Fernando's is not quite up to par with Machu Pichu, but we'll no doubt be back perhaps for lunch at some point to try their selection of seafood ceviches. read more
