Real Spice A Taste Of The Island

The most recent addition to the array of Jamaican restaurants in Newburgh, Real Spice; A Taste of…read morethe Island delivers on all fronts. I've visited 4 times and tried a few different dishes and have been happy with the results everytime. I'm a fan of the jamaican beef patties and this place has a variety of patty that i've never seen before and is way tastier and less greasier than other places in town. The chicken patty and veggie patties are definitely some of the best i've had, not overly seasoned and they are served baked and flaky. A classic dish is Jerk chicken with rice and peas with cabbage. The chicken had a very nice kick to it with a hint of cinnamon. The spice wasn't overbearing and the chicken was grilled perfectly. I've had the Ox tail stew and can say it was fall off the bone tender and the pieces were moderate in size. Not the biggest ox-tails in newburgh but it was well seasoned and was noteworthy. The Curried Goat was certainly one of the best dishes on the daily menu. Its in a yellow gravy with tender cubes of potato. The meat is tender and not gamey at all. They offer a variety of cakes; cheese, rum, red velvet and carrot cake to make a few. Fresh carrot juice and mango juice was spotted behind the counter. If you like sour dough bread, they have it for sale here along with other Jamaican specialities. Real Spice is open for breakfast and offers the classical morning specialties. the steam and fried snapper is delicious. you can call ahead of time to have it prepared as well.

The oxtail was gross..it tasted like it was boiled with a little salt. The gravy/sauce/stewings…read morewas watery. I was VERY disappointed. The coconut shrimp tasted like it used to be good before it sat out all evening, drying out and getting tough. I'm used to oxtail that is home cooked OR from Golden Krust in NYC. I shan't be back. The service was... typical jamaican friendliness - which is to say NOT friendly. the place was very clean.
